TECHNOLOGY
ECHNOLOGY IN AACTION
CTION
The Science Department continues to incorporate technology into instruction. Teachers
in nearly all science classrooms incorporate the use of interactive white boards and
mobi’s into lessons on a daily basis.
Mrs. Brooder, Mr. Soukup, and Mr. Fuqua are participating in Moodle (an online classroom)
training through a grant. Participation in the training allows these teachers
access to an I-Pad cart for student use in class. Mrs. Balling piloted the Moodle, and
several other teachers are also attending training.
In addition to utilizing the school’s computer labs, two laptop carts are used regularly by
students. For example, the additional availability of computers has enabled students in
Mr. Soukup’s classes to engage in a wide variety of learning experiences. His Anatomy
and Physiology classes recently created a Wiki. His Medical terminology classes developed
an inclusive vocabulary Wiki complete with definitions and pictures. Students also
used the laptops for projects making brochures and Powerpoint presentations. The
Medical Ethics classes are using the computers to work in a Moodle.
A set of Pasco based probeware is currently being incorporated into lab classes. Mr.
Fuqua has piloted this program in the Chemistry department where the temperature
and pressure probes have been used to teach phase changes and demonstrate gas
laws. The pH probe will be used in upcoming labs. Probeware enables students to
collect data, set up data tables and produce graphs of data by programming the device
enabling more sophisticated data analysis by students.
As you may know, the Lancaster High School Administrative Team
adopted a final exam exemption policy effective September 2008. The
policy states:
High school students may be exempt from taking a local final exam if they:
• Have at least a 90% average in the class
• Have no quarterly grade lower than an 85% in that class
• Have not reached Level I of the attendance policy for that class
• Do not have any unexcused absences in that class
Students cannot be exempt from a local exam given for a course that
eventually leads to a Regents Exam, or certain other standardized examinations.
For example, students cannot be exempt from taking final exams in
Global I, English I and II, or from certain advanced placement or academy
courses.
The steps outlined below must be followed to ensure that your son or
daughter can take advantage of the opportunity to be exempt from an
exam that is addressed by this policy:
1. Make sure that a note with the reason for the absence is submitted
to the attendance office within five (5) school days. According
to the LCSD Student Attendance Policy, absences can be
excused by submitting an absence note within five (5) days.
2. Register for the eSchool Parent Portal**, which allows parents to
verify all student attendance information.
3. Check the eSchool Parent Portal within three days of an absence
to make sure that the absence has been accurately recorded in
our official record.
4. E-mail all disputes regarding the recording of an absence to our
attendance clerk at dsherwood@lancaster.wnyric.org within 10
school days of the absence. The attendance clerk will only
address those issues brought to our attention within ten (10)
school days.
**Please click on the “Parent Portal” link in the shortcuts section of
the LHS website to register for the Parent Portal.

NEWS FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE
▪ Thursday, May 12
▪ Thursday, May 19
▪ Thursday, May 26
▪ Tuesday, May 31
▪ Thursday, June 2
All 9th grade students MUST have a physical done as the grade 10 New York State
mandated physical.
Students interested in playing sports next year MUST have a physical
done by the school physician. Students may sign up in the nurse’s office for an
appointment.
An updated physical is necessary in order to obtain a working card. Students should sign up
in the nurse’s office for an appointment. Working cards are issued as follows:
Ages 14/15 – Blue Card Ages 16/17 – Green Card
Any student who already had a working card issued to him/her at 14/15, but will turn 16 in the
upcoming year (especially during the summer), should have the physical done in the spring
so that they may renew their working card.
If students are interested (even slightly) in getting a job during the year, they should get the
physical done in school so that the medical certification can be filled out. This makes the
process of obtaining working papers a little quicker. All students are encouraged to take
advantage of the school physical so, if they wish to play sports or need working papers, all
processing can take place in a quick and efficient manner.
If there are any questions, please call the nurse’s office at 686-3266.
SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS
During the month of March immunization records will be sent to your home. This is an
important document, as you will need to supply this information to colleges or places of
employment. Please make additional copies for your records.
PLEASE KEEP THIS DOCUMENT IN A SAFE PLACE. DO NOT THROW OUT.
The nurse’s office is closed during the summer and information from the health record is
difficult to obtain during this time. Immunization records that are requested during the
summer will not be sent out until the end of August; therefore, please keep this copy of
your son/daughter’s immunization records in a place that is accessible so that the process
of the college is not delayed.

opportunity to share thoughts and ideas regarding Relay, along with new ideas on how
to build on our already successful event. It also gives anyone who’s interested in
putting a team together a prime opportunity to get information and listen to the
experiences of those who participated in previous years.
At Kickoff, the 2011 Relay theme will be voted on, and ideas for onsite and offsite fundraising
will be discussed. We hope to incorporate the whole community in this year’s
Relay event. Kickoff is the beginning to what will become a fun and successful event.
