and Dan Belasco / plan b, Christian Sievers, Vajra Spook, Anna-Myga Kasten, Kym Ward and Andrea
Winkler. Curated by Elly Clarke and Jessica Brouder.
Open: Thursday 22 nd April 2010, 19:30-22:00h and on Saturday 24 th April 16:00-19:00h
This show wasn’t supposed to be at here tonight, but in New York City, care of Vita Gottlieb (of
Shed and a Half Gallery), in Greenwich Village. However, thanks to the Icelandic Volcano,
along with millions of other people, I was unable to travel this week. So this is a kind of hellogoodbye
party before the show trots off to other, further-flung destinations, in either my or
Jessica’s suitcase.
WUNDERKAMMER translates as Cabinet of Curiosities. Here you see works by 11 Berlinbased/Clarke
Gallery artists: five of whom have shown here before; the others not. With all spare
space under the bed/above the door/in cupboards running out, and realizing between us how
many different places we plan to go to over the next 12 months, it felt like a good time to branch
out and bring the mobility that we as individuals (usually) enjoy to the gallery.
Jessica and I invited works quite simply that would fit within the confines of a hand-luggage size
Wunderkammer and were especially interested in those that referenced story telling, dealt with
the idea of the archive or that were traces of an event or a larger piece. For 12 months the show
will go where we go, returning next spring with whatever spoils it has accumulated by then.
Sales will make way for new work to be accommodated by artists from each place we visit.
Some brief additional notes on the works: Anna Myga Kasten normally works in very large scale
– her piece here is the smallest she has ever made; Christians’ Tie belongs to a whole suit he had
made in this material; the soap in the bathroom is from Kym Ward’s performance that took place
here last month and will be in the bathroom of every exhibition of Wunderkammer – until it runs
out. The rest of the info (sent to us by the artists themselves) is on the labels.
This exhibition text will be rewritten by either myself or Jessica each time it’s shown, reflecting
the changing contents and exhibition setting. Next stop is on the 8 th May, with Jessica in the
offices of Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.
For further updates on the travels of Wunderkammer please sign up for the Clarke Gallery
mailing list and check out the website for photos as we go.
Thanks for coming – we hope you enjoy it!
Elly
Thanks to Kathleen Herold, Vita Gottlieb (Shed and a Half Gallery), Joachim Fleury and all artists and (thought I
wouldn’t have said it last week) to Eyjafjallajökull for exploding so that the Berlin crowd got to see
Wunderkammer first.
