Plants in the landscape demand attention—and boy, do they get it! The
superlative foliage display is augmented in midspring by clusters of pink
buds, which open to white, very fragrant flowers. Semi-evergreen or
fully deciduous at the limits of its hardiness. Rounded habit.
pink coloring after cool nights. After an initial spring bloom, it blooms
irregularly through summer and fall; living up to its name. Semievergreen
in zone 7 and deciduous in colder areas.
2” Liner Pot, Quart, C1
Daphne x transatlantica ‘Summer Ice’
Zone 6 3’ x 3’
A choice evergreen daphne with variegated foliage and a propensity
to bloom from spring until fall. The leaves have a fine, creamy white
edge, less prominent than that of ‘Carol Mackie’, and the fragrant white
flowers appear in clusters that dot the bush right through summer.
Rounded, shrubby habit.
2” Liner Pot, Quart, C1
Disanthus cercidifolius
Zone 5 6-10’ x 6-10’
This choice deciduous shrub from Japan is highly valued for the beautiful
shades of burgundy, yellow, orange, and red that suffuse its redbudlike
leaves in autumn. Small purplish flowers appear in October, but
they play second fiddle to the foliage display. Best in partial shade and
humus-rich soil. A good companion for corylopsis, rhododendrons, or
styrax. AGM winner. GPP award.
2” Liner Pot, Quart
clusters. Opening a warm orange coloration with a sweet fragrance,
mid winter to early spring. Well drained soil. Full sun to partial sun.
Quart
Enkianthus campanulatus ‘Red Bells’
Zone 5 5-8’ x 5-8’
The name describes the red rims of the otherwise cream-colored, bellshaped
flowers, but the real ornamental value of this shrub is its bold
yellow, orange, and red fall color and its tiered habit, which is best
appreciated in winter. Shade tolerant. GPP award. Grows slowly.
2” Liner Pot, Quart
Enkianthus campanulatus ‘Showy Lantern’
Zone 5 Weston Nurseries 6-10’ x 4-6’
One of the finest red-flowering selections to date, yielding a lavish
display of cherry red flowers in late spring. Fall color can be very
impressive, usually in stunning red and orange tones. Combines well
with other ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons and heaths.
