Expander tool repair
An efficient alternative
We have created a new repair service for
expanders used in tube production. The
reason behind this is that the procurement of
a new expander tool is linked to longer
delivery times. The failure of high-precision
components can result in considerable
problems arising.
Assembled expander tool
Therefore a sensible alternative is to repair
the tool. This not only offers cost benefits but
New expander tool
for Vyksa Steel Works in Russia
Our customer Vyksa Steel Works in Russia
recently received a new expander tool
for its tube welding plant. A particular
challenge was finding the heavy goods
vehicle needed for transporting it over land.
Due to its heavy weight, one HGV has to be
ordered for each of the expander tools. The
dimensions of the supplied tool were as
follows:
Tool size: 50 - 56"
Weight: 16,500 Kg
Volume: 11.44 m3
Dimensions: 325 cm x 220 cm x 160 cm
SMS Meer GmbH
Ohlerkirchweg 66
41069 Mönchengladbach
Germany
ensures the quick availability of the tool,
which is a crucial factor.
Following a detailed damage analysis, the
SMS Meer Service experts establish the
scope of the repair. The expander tool
is transported to Mönchengladbach and
repaired in our modern
workshop.
As a manufacturer of
expanders we guarantee
fast and reliable repair of
the damage using original
parts. We also provide
documentation on the
damage and repair
detailing possible causes
and highlighting potential
for improvement to the
plant operator.
Expander tools are high-precision components
and essential for reliable tube
production. Only on-time delivery can
prevent lengthy plant downtimes with
correspondingly costly production stoppages.
The expander is used for the internal
sizing and straightening of longitudinallywelded
large-diameter pipes through plastic
deformation. It ensures the dimensional
tolerances are maintained, thereby
safeguarding the quality of the welded
tubes.
What exactly is an expander ?
In addition to the forming process and tube
welding, the mechanical expander has a
decisive influence on the quality of the
tube. The mechanical expander serves to
straighten and size the tubes.
Through gradual cold-forming with an
expanding head inside the tube – with
plastic deformation to between 1.0% and
1.5% taking place here – the tubes are
sized internally and straightened across
their entire length after being finish-welded.
And what is the expander tool
used for ?
The expander tool is the centrepiece of the
mechanical expander and plays its part in
determining the tube diameters and wall
thicknesses which can be machined on the
expander.
Various expander tools are required
depending on the large-diameter pipe
requirements.
Vyksa Steel Works
Vyksa Steel Works JSC, founded in 1757,
is one of the most traditional metallurgical
plants in Russia and is part of the
OMK Group.
Annual production of longitudinally-welded
pipes exceeds 2 million tonnes each year.
