FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Although the three-member committee to select the new VC did not
have a chance to take a look at the criteria we articulated in our last
editorial, it has been a pleasant surprise to note that they picked a
candidate who matches the criteria in almost all aspects. Thus, we
believe that with the appointment of Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray ('74ETC)
as new VC, the long nightmare at the campus will come to an end.
But, we do not have any illusion to think that the task to regain
BESU’s status as a premier engineering institution in India will be
easy. Since Dr. B. Sen left, the situation at BESU had deteriorated so
much during last 12/13 years, that it is now a “lost decade” in the
history of our beloved college.
With the appointment of new VC, we have noticed a remarkable
positive change at the campus. Prof. Ray has already met with all
stakeholders of the institute and articulated his vision to bring higher
educational standards, discipline, peace, rule of law and camaraderie
back to the campus to complete BESU’s journey to become an
Institute of National Importance soon. He has already put into
operations a no. of steps to make his vision a reality.
We, at GAABESU, applaud his efforts and promise to help him in his
endeavor to make our beloved college top technical institution again.
We are happy to note that he has already taken some steps to
implement a number of recommendations from the report prepared by
the GAABESU representatives on the causes and remedies of recent
student unrests in the campus. The said report was handed over to
him during a recent meeting. GAABESU promised to work with him to
make BESU a top technical institution.
“Ajoy”, we at GAABESU welcome you back at our hallowed campus.
We hope you will be the new architect of our “Grand Old College” and
transform it to a grander place. We are happy to note that by
becoming a member of GAABESU, you have accepted us and
indicated your intention to work with us to take our Alma Mater to a
greater height. We extend our good wishes and promise to help you
to make our Alma Mater a world-class institution in both education
and research in engineering and science.
May God bless our Alma Mater!
Note: The editorial is representative of the thoughts and beliefs that are solely
the editor’s and is not representative of the official position of GAABESU.

BESU ACTIVITIES
Appointment of VC at BESU
Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray (‘74ETC), Professor and Director of School of
Medical Science and Technology, IIT-Kharagpur, has joined Bengal
Engineering and Science University [Click here for details] as its new
Vice Chancellor on March 1.
A Message from the VC on March 30
My dear and esteemed Alumna/Alumnus,
Please accept my personal regards and best wishes and convey the
same to the members of your family. I consider it a rare privilege for
an alumnus of B E College to be associated with this great University
as its Vice Chancellor. This day reminds me of the contributions of all
of you, including many others, who have built this institution/university
over a period of one hundred and fifty three years, with dedication and
tireless efforts. I consider it my humble duty to pay my respect to each
one of you (along with many others) with gratitude.
Immediately after joining BESU, I have met all the teachers and
members of administrative staff of BESU. I have visited almost all the
departments and this week I will visit the schools of BESU. I am
extremely happy to note that I am getting excellent support from our
teachers and students as well as the administrative staff in BESU in
shaping our institution to make it one of the best in India. I have been
receiving guidance from some of our great and eminent retired
teachers, alumni and academic administrators, whose love and
commitment to the cause of achieving excellence in BESU, is a
driving force to all of us. On behalf of the university I am grateful to
each one of them. Please allow me now to present before you the
following tasks, which I feel needs immediate attention. In
implementing some of these tasks I need your help, which will be
gratefully acknowledged by all of us – teachers, students and staff of
BESU.
Task 1: Bringing back a sense of unity and fraternity amongst the
entire students’ community, so that our academic programs can run
smoothly, with accelerated vigor.
I am happy to announce that the entire student community, in a rare
display of solidarity and fraternity, took the following oath on 16th
March, the Samhati Dibas, at Lords ground, in the presence of
Professor In Charge of Students Affairs (PICSA) and all other
professors and faculty members of BESU.
(i) We feel proud to be a part of the rich and glorious heritage of
one hundred and fifty three years of Bengal Engineering and
Science University (BESU), Shibpur
2
Alumni Web Site http://www.becollege.org
BESU Official Web Site: http://www.becs.ac.in
(ii) We understand that we will achieve excellence in academics
only when there is a resonance in our combined will of making
our university, one of the best in the country.
(iii) We take this pledge today that we will, for ever remain united
and live with a sense of fraternity and solidarity to make our
university a truly great one.
(iv) We resolve not to do anything that tarnishes the reputation of
our university.
(v) We also pledge to dedicate the fruits of all our good work to the
services of our nation.
During many interactions with the students, I found the students
community, both undergraduate and postgraduate, to be extremely
cooperative and they are eager to work hard for achieving academic
excellence.
Task 2: To ensure that the students’ unity and solidarity is maintained
for ever, we need to engage them through various cultural and sports
programs.
It is encouraging to note that those BESU students are doing well in
various games and sports. PICSA along with our Superintendents of
hostels/halls have done commendable job in promoting sports and
games in BESU through various means. The students need avenues
where they can demonstrate their creativity in cultural activities, such
as, dramatics, music, photography, painting and so on.
With the above objective in mind, we have decided to start various
societies amongst the students, such as dramatics society, music
society, photography society and so on.
Also we are planning to start a "Students’ Technical Activity Centre",
where they can design and fabricate models, gadgets and so on. I am
extremely happy to note that a large number of students are meeting
me to create facilities so that they can take up such projects. We are
committed to providing all support and guidance in this regard.
A ‘Space Planning Committee’, comprising of our senior Professors
has been constituted to identify, amongst other things, the location
where such societies can be located. The old Slater Hall or the Baby
Slater Hall may be the possible locations. Your help in implementing
these programs will be ever remembered by the students of BESU.
Task 3: To create an academic calendar for the entire institute.
We have already prepared the academic calendar (not a detailed one)
for the current and next semester. Our Deans and Controller of
Examinations have worked hard to complete this task. Now the
complete academic calendar, showing the examination schedule,
university holidays, reunion and students technical festival finalized,
this will be presented to the students, teachers and staff members
right in the beginning of the year. I have appealed to the students,

faculty and the staff to kindly cooperate in ensuring that this academic
calendar is maintained with utmost seriousness and sanctity. I am
happy that everyone has assured cooperation.
Task 4: To encourage our young faculty to initiate more research,
through sponsored research programs in BESU.
The importance of carrying out innovative research cannot be over
emphasized in an Institute of National Importance. BESU is indeed
blessed with the association of some of our country’s greatest
teachers and researchers in various departments and schools. I am
happy to announce that many eminent academicians, who are alumni
of BESU, are now providing excellent services for BESU. They are
actively engaged with our research and teaching programs.
It is heartening to note that there exists an ocean of creativity and
talent amongst the faculty and the students of BESU. Considering the
fact that there are several constraints like space, infrastructure, fund
and so on, the research being pursued by many faculty members is
indeed praiseworthy. Yet, we must all agree that we need to do much
more. On the part of the BESU administration, I am committed to
provide all possible encouragement and environment to promote more
research in BESU. The following actions have been initiated:
(i) Our Library needs modernization with more reference books,
research journals (both hard copy and on line). We are going to
subscribe online journals including Science Direct, IEEE
Transactions (multiple user licenses) and more, depending on
the fund condition, which as you know is indeed meagre.
(ii) A new sponsored research and consultancy cell will be created
with sufficient number of administrative staff to ensure smooth
completion of the sponsored and consultancy projects. We are
motivating our faculty to take more number of such research
projects from various government agencies, national and
transnational industries. Several incentives have been declared
during my meetings with the teachers for initiating sponsored
and collaborative research at the institute.
Here I will seek your assistance in many forms – direct or indirect. We
need excellent researchers to guide and steer the research activities.
We need many good teachers in a number of departments and
schools to reinforce the existing system. I look forward to getting your
support here.
Task 5: BESU with its long and profound heritage of one hundred
and fifty three years needs to create a museum where this remarkable
and marvelous story of evolution can be preserved through
photographs, documents, models and so on. This appears to me as
an extremely urgent task, which can be initiated only with your
assistance.
programs etc is under preparation by this committee. The calendar
will be circulated to everyone for opinion, before finalization. Once it is
3
Alumni Web Site http://www.becollege.org
BESU Official Web Site: http://www.becs.ac.in
Task 6: Need to create a robust academic administrative structure
and amend some of the rules and regulations. We are in the process
of amending some of the provisions in our statutes and regulations to
ensure an enhanced level of academic activities. The university
professors, registrar and the administrative staff have extended their
full cooperation in all such matters.
Also BESU had earlier initiated a project for automating the entire
administrative procedures. We will ensure that the entire academic
program, including students’ registration, research scholars’
enrolment, students’ attendance and so on will be done on line.
Task 7: Need for augmentation of more industry – academic
interaction. This is another prime area in which we should focus to
ensure that more industry sponsored projects can be initiated here.
We need active support of our alumnae/alumni in this effort.
Task 8: During the post globalization era, it is extremely important,
rather mandatory, to have more collaboration with universities abroad.
Currently we are identifying our strength and weaknesses and we will
be back to you again with details on this issue. I am sure that we will
get your support in this effort as well.
There are many other issues like creating a central research facility,
ensuring more publications by the students, creating new areas of
research and studies, solving accommodation problems for students,
teachers, staff and also mess workers to make the university
completely residential, and so on. I will surely not bother you with all
the tasks ahead of us.
All of us remember the old clock tower of B E College, which was a
landmark during our student days. This symbolic tower reminds us of
our obligations towards the older generation and our responsibilities
towards the future generations in ensuring a healthy, strong & self
reliant India. I will be immensely glad to have your feedback,
suggestions and your active support in ensuring that we become one
of the best in India.
With support from all of you, we are determined to make our endeavor
a success. In the words of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore –
"Let all our songs
Gather together their diverse strains
Into a single current leading to an ocean of light
- we salute thee".
On behalf of myself and my family, let me once again convey our
respects and best wishes to you all.
Unity, Solidarity & Fraternity at BESU!
- Submitted by PICSA
Our new Vice Chancellor, Prof Ajoy Kumar Ray, expressed his desire
to address all the students and administer oath to them for Unity,
Solidarity & Fraternity at BESU in a ceremony on March 16. He asked
PICSA to organize this ceremony. He also suggested the name of the
programme to be “Chatra Sanghati”.
On 15th March 2009 at about 1:00 PM, I called a group of students at
Netaji Bhavan to share my ideas with them on “Sanghati”, which
means – Unity, Solidarity and Fraternity and how to achieve our final
goal of academic excellence. Though the time was very short and a
lot had to be done, the students took it as a challenge. They assured,
Sir, it will be done in time for the ceremony.
By evening, the students had beautifully and appropriately crafted out
the idea of representing “Sanghati”.
4
Alumni Web Site http://www.becollege.org
BESU Official Web Site: http://www.becs.ac.in
The word “Sanghati” was depicted as a painting of three symbols
namely – The Human Fist, The Rising Sun and The Human Mind
respectively on three separate scrolls of cloth. The Human Fist stood
for Unity, Solidarity and Fraternity. The Rising Sun stood for
Prosperity and the Human Mind engrossed in thought stood for
academic excellence.
Refreshing campus activities – photos and a report
- Submitted by PICSA
"....On 14th March, (Saturday), when I was taking an early morning
walk around the campus, I saw some of our boys playing cricket at the
Lords. I went ahead to enquire – why so early? They replied – “Sir, today
is our last day of the tournament and we are so cramped up with
number of matches to be played that unless we start playing early
morning, the tournament would not be completed by 9:00 PM. I was
quite touched and amazed to see the enthusiasm & dedication of the
students. Therefore, I got all the reasons to believe that our students
can do wonders...." [Click here for the report]
BECAA, East Coast Annual Dinner
- By Arindam Mukherjee, 90ME
BE College alumni association of Tri -State area (NY/NJ/CT)
organized its Winter Reunion celebration on February 14 in Princeton,
NJ. Yes – it was the Valentine’s Day and that was an added charm!
Like last few years, winter event was hosted in Crown of India
restaurant. Unlike summer reunion, which typically has outdoor sports
thrown in and is organized in a park, near sub-zero temperature of
February forces all of us to head straight from the car to the banquet
hall of the restaurant. But there is one common factor among all our
reunion events – “endless adda” and performance by alumni & family
members. Click here for additional information
