Middle-class Housing (c1860-1914) (Areas 12-16)<br />
– Burscough Road (Area 12), Derby Street West (Area 13)<br />
Areas of middle-class housing constructed in the late nineteenth of early twentieth century,<br />
comprising both semi-detached villas and terraced houses, nearly all with large rear<br />
gardens, as well as small front<br />
gardens.<br />
– Southport Road (Area 14)<br />

An area of large, middle-class houses, comprising semi-detached villas with large gardens,<br />
built in the second half of the nineteenth century.<br />
– Wigan Road (Area 15)<br />
A large area of middle-class housing, comprising both semi-detached villas and terraced<br />
houses, nearly all with large rear gardens, as well as small front gardens.<br />
Bye-law Terraced Housing (Areas 17-19)<br />
There are three defined areas of nineteenth century terraced houses, two of these are<br />
situated on the south-west side of the town, near the boundary with Aughton. Both Park<br />
Avenue and Dyers Lane houses were built in the second half of the nineteenth century, and<br />
were probably intended as lower middle-class accommodation. The other area is situated<br />
on Station Road and was mainly constructed in the early years of the twentieth century.<br />
Pre-NHS Hospital (Area 20)<br />
– Ormskirk Hospital (Area 20)<br />
Built as the former Union Workhouse in 1853, the original buildings have now been<br />
incorporated into the Ormskirk and District General Hospital<br />
Twentieth Century Hospital (Area 21)<br />
Ormskirk and District General Hospital is a purpose-built hospital constructed in the latter<br />
half of the twentieth century on the site of the Union Workhouse, incorporating some of the<br />
original buildings (area 20). The hospital is also built on the site of a sandstone quarry and<br />
Fairfield House that were both situated in the south of the character area (OS 1849<br />
1:10560, 92; OS 1893 1:2500, 92.01).<br />
