Basic Rules of the
Crowne Plaza Brand Identity

At the heart of all successful brand identity programmes are
three absolutes...a well designed graphic image, a solid set of
brand standards and the consistent application of brand graphics
across all areas of implementation. Signage is the architectural
display of the brand identity and an understanding of the basic
graphic usage rules is paramount for its effective execution.
On the following pages, we will discuss:
• The brand signature, which is the logo medallion and
logotype layouts.
• The colour system.
• The hotel naming and type font systems that are used to
identify the individual hotel name and city designations.
• The clear space around the brand signature that improves
the readability of the logo medallion and logotype layouts
when applied to the building and signage panels.
Understanding the basic rules of the Crowne Plaza Brand Identity
is the essential first step. All of the Crowne Plaza brand signage
is based on these design rules.

Section 4
Brand Signature
The Crowne Plaza signature is the graphic
relationship of the logo medallion and
Crowne Plaza logotype. They exist in an
established format and should always appear
together. The only exception is when the logo
medallion appears alone on a building when
space limitations prohibit use of the full
signature.
The centred orientation is the preferred layout.
Two alternate orientations are provided for
buildings with limited signage area. Careful
use of these sign formats may provide an
opportunity to increase the overall size of the
sign, thus improving the long-range visibility
of the sign.

Colour System
Colour is one of the most memorable and
powerful elements of brand recognition.
In the new Crowne Plaza brand identity,
the basic brand colours are Crowne Plaza
Gold, White and Crimson.
Specifications for the colour system have been
developed to ensure a consistent appearance
across a broad range of materials including
paint and translucent and opaque films.
Adherence to these standards is mandatory.

Section 6
Hotel Identity Naming System
A precise naming policy and graphic layout
has been established for the individual
Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts properties.
The objective is to ensure that the Crowne Plaza
brand name always has prominence.
There are two elements in the Crowne Plaza
Hotels & Resorts naming system:
• The Crowne Plaza brand signature which
always appears first when applied to signage.
• The property or location name that helps
identify the hotel by differentiating it from
other Crowne Plaza properties in the same
city. The Trade Gothic Bold 2 type font is
used for these names.
Note: This naming system is used for all signs
with the exception of the high level building
signage, where only the brand signature (logo
medallion and logotype) appear for improved
long distance viewing.
The graphic interrelationship between these
elements has been established and adherence
to these standards is mandatory.

Clear Space Rules
(Preferred Centred Orientation)
A “clear space” standard has been developed
to improve the graphic impact of our brand
identity. The clear space around the logo must
be equal to or greater than the height of the “A”
in “PLAZA.”
Careful consideration must be given when
applying the signature to all architectural
backgrounds. Always observe the clear space
area when positioning the Crowne Plaza signage
to avoid infringement from architectural details,
surface changes, outer limits of the building,
etc.

General Selection Rules:
"Bigger is Better"
Select the largest signage available for the main brand identity
on the hotel and its property. While it's important to keep signage
in proper relationship to the architecture of the hotel, larger
format signs provide the greatest long-range identification. When
dealing with local zoning boards, always present a request for
the maximum allowable signage.
"Better Early Than Late"
Think of effective signage as a series of wayfinding links, leading
your guest to the hotel. The sooner you can provide information
to your guest en route, the better. Consider applying for municipal
motorway signage, if available, and try to implement long-range
perimeter brand signs wherever possible.
"Less is More"
Carefully select the number of signs that are necessary to help
direct the guest around the hotel. Using too many signs causes
visual clutter that can detract from a good guest experience.

Special Zoning & Historic Location Issues
While a primary objective of this programme is to promote a
consistent Crowne Plaza image, there will be situations where
local zoning or the heritage status of the hotel property preclude
the implementation of the standard signage plan. In these special
cases, your regional InterContinental Hotels Group Technical
Services Department will work with you to ensure that the Crowne
Plaza brand identity is protected while responding to the special
requirements of that particular site.
Upgrading Existing Hotel Signage
Any Crowne Plaza brand signage upgrade must be implemented
on a complete property wide basis. Under no circumstance will
a partial change over from the old to the new brand signage
be permitted.

Selected Sign Suppliers
In order to ensure the highest product quality and image
consistency for the Crowne Plaza brand signage program,
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has selected highly qualified
suppliers to provide paint, sign film, lighting components and
special sign finishes. Substitutions will be allowed, only if
approved by IHG prior to sign fabrication.
Trademark Usage
Depending on the hotel location, special legal requirements for
the use of registration or trademarks may apply. For illustrative
purposes, this guideline demonstrates the registration mark
(circle R) positioned in relationship to the Crowne Plaza logotype.
Consult your regional InterContinental Hotels Group Technical
Services Department for proper trademark usage rules.

Code Compliance
Selected sign companies accept total responsibility for site
surveys, materials procurement, structural engineering, fabrication
methods, and installation of sign components. The signage must
comply with local codes governing the use of graphic messages
and symbols. These regulations may address issues of accessibility,
life-safety and visibility of the sign graphics based on colour,
contrast and type style. IHG, its employees, design consultants,
advisers, and agents shall not be liable for any errors or omissions
in this guideline.
InterContinental Hotels Group Exclusive Ownership
The sign designs contained in these guidelines are the exclusive
property of InterContinental Hotels Group. Unauthorised use of
these designs or reproduction of these specifications, in whole
or in part, without written authorisation from IHG is prohibited.
The recipient of these specifications shall maintain the
confidentiality of such information and secrets, and shall return
the original and its copies to IHG upon demand.

High Level Building Signature/
Overview
Sign Type A
Daytime/Nighttime Appearance
For high level applications on light building
colours, the Crowne Plaza logotype is produced
with letter faces that appear CP Crimson during
the day and illuminating Crimson at night. For
medium dark to dark building materials, the
letter faces appear white during the day, while
illuminating Crimson at night. Always specify
the letter face colour which produces the highest
contrast during the day.
For most installations, the high level linear
signature is installed at locations where vertical
surface area is limited. This generally occurs at
the highest location on the building tower as
shown in the photo illustration to the right.
Special Applications/Roof-Top Installation
Installation of a Crowne Plaza roof sign above
the top of the building line is permitted only in
special applications. This installation may occur
when the signature sign cannot be installed
directly to the building due to space limitations,
or lack of long-range visibility when the sign is
installed on the physical building.
The roof-top sign requires highly specialized
structural engineering based on sign codes
dictated by local ordinances, height of installation
off the ground, and wind load factors calculated
for the region. When used, conform to all colour
and contrast standards that have been approved
for use with the high level building signage.

Stand-Alone Application
Sign Type C
The flag logo is best suited for narrow, vertical
areas where space limitations prohibit use of the
full Crowne Plaza signature. For high level installations
where the logo is viewed from great distances, the
flexible face construction is recommended. The flexible
face logo medallion may only be specified for
installations above 25 metres.
For installations in which a high quality, dimensional
appearance is required, and for all installations at 25
metres and below, Sign Type F.

The logo medallion is best suited for narrow, vertical
areas where space limitations prohibit use of the
full Crowne Plaza signature.
For installations up to 25 metres above the street
level, the dimensional logo shown here is
recommended. For high level installations where the
logo is viewed from great distances Sign Type C, with
a flexible face construction, is the alternate
construction method.

Design Options:
These signs are a main focal point at the entrance
doors to the hotel and must be carefully integrated
into the header and porte-cochere structures.
While the Crowne Plaza brand identity must match
the established identity rules contained in this
guideline, the fabrication details and material
specifications will vary, depending on the specific
building materials and style of the hotel architecture.
Finishes on background panels and support
structures should be compatible with the surrounding
architectural materials.
The examples to the right illustrate typical material
options to the porte-cochere and entrance signage
design.

The three dimensional Crowne Plaza medallion has three stripes and an oval border internally illuminated in CP Gold.
The inlay area is opaque CP Crimson. The three dimensional Crowne Plaza letterforms are finished in CP Gold to
match the medallion and are halo lit. Letterforms and medallion are positioned on a CP Crimson background.
The Crowne Plaza medallion and letterforms are flush fit into a satin brass background
and are internally illuminated in white.
The Crowne Plaza medallion is finished in highly polished brass with a minimal depth dimension.
The inlay area is opaque CP Crimson. The Crowne Plaza letterforms are finished in CP Crimson with
a minimal depth dimension. The letterforms and medallion are pin mounted on a satin silver background.
Even, exterior illumination is required for this design.

Satin brass wall mounted letters in the approved
Crowne Plaza type style are recommended at
the street level. Use of the location/property
name is optional.
Several fabrication methods are available when
producing the logo medallion. In most instances,
the background field within the oval shape is
recessed below the outer ring and three stripes.
The background can be paint filled to match
the CP Crimson colour, with the outer ring and
stripes highly polished. The background may
also appear as a brass texture, in contrast to
the polished brass ring and stripes. A very high
quality appearance is achieved by casting the
logo to create a dimensional effect. See Sign
Type I for cast logo medallion details.

Cast Wall-Mounted Sign
Sign Type I
When the logo medallion is wall mounted to
either side of the primary hotel entrance, a high
quality appearance is achieved by casting the
logo to create a dimensional effect.
As shown in the section view, the curved
background field is recessed below the outer
ring and three stripes. The background is paint
filled to match the CP Crimson colour, with the
outer ring, stripes and returns highly polished
as shown. The background may also appear as
a texture in a slightly darker gold colour,
contrasting with the highly polished details.

Window/Door Application
Sign Type J
The Crowne Plaza logo medallion may be used
as a secondary brand identification graphic
element. This application is intended primarily
for the windows and doors in the hotel’s entrance
area.
Various methods may be used to apply the logo
medallion including fine etching, gold leaf and
the use of the Crowne Plaza vinyl film on the
second surface of the glass.
The scale of this graphic is very important and
it should be appropriately sized for the display
area. This is not a long distance identification
element.
Never repeat the logo medallion or us it as a
safety band.

wall of the reception area is dependent on the
interior architectural style of the hotel and
available space. In some cases, the decor
precludes the use of the Crowne Plaza signature.
