Another amazing darts season
As we prepare for our life on the water, the darts season for
our 50+ players draws to a close. This season we beat
Lakeshore Yacht Club for the 4th year in a row, but we must not
get complacent because each year the competition has been
very close.
Our season ended on April 11th with a banquet of salads,
pasta and pastries from Antipastos Italian Kitchen which was
enjoyed by all. Following the banquet, came the awards for the
seasons play.
Marg Paulson, our lass from Liverpool, won the Most
Improved Player award.
Winning Cricket was the ‘A’team of Elsa Beattie, Trudy
Doody, Barb Dermott and Sandra Brans.
Overall champions and winners of 301 were the ‘B’team led
by Jim Pollock, ably supported by Marg Paulson, John Mosforth
, and Mike Butterfield. The final result was a win by
one game, this was an intensely close season.
Congratulations to all!!!
The evening ended with a very vicious game of Killer,
fortunately no one was injured.
Special thanks to Dave Dorrington and Graham Beattie
for their assistance throughout the season.
I hope everyone enjoys the summer and looks forward to
another Darts season at Bronte Harbour Darts and Yacht Club.
Remember if you go into dart withdrawal the boards are there
all summer (Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon might
be good times to practice).
Darts will resume on November 7th 2012 - be ready!
JAY KIRKPATRICK Commodore
Another great Launch!
The 2012 Sailing Season is now underway with the
50th successful launch of the season at BHYC!
We had a great turn out in March for our Birthday
celebrations, and we are gearing up for a great time June
2nd for our Sail Past and official celebration of our 50th
Anniversary. If you would like to speak at part of Sail Past
to share your favourite BHYC memory, or have photos
you would like to include in the slideshows, please get in
touch with Natalie Bullard. For the 50th, Grad Dewar
has created a fantastic 2012/2013 calendar of our Regatta,
Race and Cruise events, and best of all – you are likely in
it. You can reach him through www.graddewar.com the
photo website. Buy your Sail Past dinner tickets at the
Club early; based on our March 15th party, we expect to
sell out.
Many of you have visited our new website, Pat Toal
and Cam Watt have spent many months planning, coding,
and testing the new pages and the updated and new content
will continue to grow. If you are looking for a way to
thank Pat for saving the Club thousands of dollars, please
speak to him about his Ride to Conquer Cancer and
support his goal to ride over 200kms and raise $5000.
Good luck Pat!
In the past five years the Membership & Publicity
Director used to see 5-10 new memberships per year,
our website was used to post events and photos, and our
communication to groups outside of the Club was limited.
Now, we see 5-10 applications at some of Board meetings,
our website is a substantial piece of technology, and we
are getting better at telling the world who we are and why
BHYC is the best Club for the community. Cam Watt has
done a great job with the role, but it has now grown to a
challenging amount of effort for one Director. Your Board
intends to propose at the AGM (November 28th) that the
roles be split to a Membership Director and a Publicity
Director. This will allow the Publicity Director to focus on
our communications inside and outside the Club, and the
Membership Director to grow our Membership and mentor
our new Members. We will have full descriptions in future
Signal editions, if you are interested in either role, please
speak with Cam.
This Board is living by our bylaws and challenging one
another to ensure we are always onside. I thought it would
help all of us if we read up a bit each month on some of
the language they contain. Going forward, we will be
publishing a bylaw per month in the Signal so that we are
all on the same page. I am sure some of them will
generate some good discussion, if you have any questions
or would like clarification; please ask any of your Board
Members. See you at the Club, Jay.
CHARLES STACEY House Director
Thank you for all your support of the House this year -
between various club events, darts league, club rentals
and Friday socials, it has been a very busy time.
We will be offering a limited food menu at the bar going
forward, serving mini-pizzas, somozas and spring rolls
available during regular house hours.
For race nights this year, we will be continuing the tradition
of pizza Tuesday night, and wings Thursday night. To
keep overheads low, we will be ordering from a local pizzeria
and the Firehall. We will be accepting advance orders,
and the food will be delivered shortly after the fleet is in.
Thanks to various groups volunteering to host Friday night
appetizers, we will be continuing on into May - so watch for
emails announcing upcoming Friday night socials!"
Here we go again. The season has begun and let’s
all hope for great weather and even better friendships.
There are two items to note at this time.
Please reference the cruising schedule that accompanies
A hearty thank-you to all who assisted in the sailor’s
nights and special seminars over the “Dark” season.
Thanks also to Richard Bissonnette for running a Race
Committee refresher course for all the volunteers who
have graciously signed-up for this task. This issue of
Signal should reach you about the time of our first races
so I wish all good luck and safe sailing.
Spring is off to a great start at the club! Spring Fling
was a great success, everyone loved the fish and
chips and the band was just awesome! We look
forward to seeing the Descendants here again in the near
future. Thanks to all my kitchen help and clean up crew.
Without such great volunteers this wouldn’t be possible.
Friday night appetizers are going as strong as ever,
lots of groups have stepped up and put out a great spread.
As long as we can get people interested in putting them
on, we will continue them.
With Sailpast coming up I’m looking for help for a lot
of different aspects. I’ll need breakfast help all the way to
dinner clean up. The Ladies Auxiliary will be resurrected
to put together the dinner but any volunteers will be
appreciated (as I will be on Chariot, racing the Susan
Hood). We’re going to be having a steak dinner to celebrate
our 50th. Tickets will be available at the bar. Let’s make
this year special! Please contact me to get involved,
Larry Jensen attended
the C&CYachts
Employee Reunion
Ihad the pleasure of attending the
C&C Yachts Employee Reunion held
at Royal Hamilton Yacht Club on April
14th 2012.
Approximately 130 former staff came from
Europe, United States, and coast to coast in
Canada. All to celebrate our very enjoyable
years, working for one of the most famous
Canadian global companies, and the greatest
ensemble of yacht designers in my lifetime.
It was followed up the next day with panel
discussion, open to the public, with Design,
Manufacturing, Sales, and Legacy represented.
Watch for articles on this event on Good
Old Boat, Canadian Yachting and Professional
Boat Builders magazines.
What a weekend reminiscing about the old
days, and rubbing shoulder with my childhood
heros.
And for some of you that have been around
for a few years, how many of you remember
Johnny Walker of Metro Marine?
2012 Roster
There have been lots of questions about the roster this year
many members are excited to have this document published and
in hand as soon as possible. The roster will follow the usual
tradition, ready for Sailpast. Thank you to all who aided the
process by responding to the online survey. We are currently
looking for advertisers to help us print the roster. If you are interested
in advertising in the roster please send your ad details to
membership@bhyc.on.ca ASAP. Pricing is based on size of ad.
I want to offer a huge thank you again to Carole Clark, Natalie
Bullard and Barbara Keeley Watt for calling and emailing all
remaining members to collect their details. This is a tedious and
time consuming process and I appreciate the efforts!
This season we have a variety of 50th anniversary regalia for
you featuring our 50th anniversary logo designed by John Mac-
Lake Erie Race Week, 34 boats have registered interest in
entering this week long event. Participating Clubs to
provide Supper, Breakfast and Boxed Lunches at every
destination. BHYC is to be responsible for hosting a
“Mexican” themed night on Wednesday July 11th. A
committee has been struck to organize the event; we will
be looking for volunteers to set-up, clean-up, serve.
We are also looking for a couple of energetic, innovative
Officers of the Day to organise rafting of visiting boats.
One day Yard Cleanup May 13
A general clean-up of the clubhouse and surrounding
property is scheduled for Sunday, May 13, starting at
09:00 hrs. Work or gardening gloves are suggested
for those assisting with yard clean-up. Volunteers are
required to arrive ready to roll up your sleeves, and
help spruce up the club for the upcoming 50th
Anniversary celebration. An easy way to get your
hours. See Cam Watt for further details.
Officer of the Day
First impressions are important and when guests arrive from
other clubs its our desire to make them feel welcomed, so
I am looking for volunteers to help with the Officer of the
Day Program. It is not a large time committed program but
it does need some active work to get the season rolling.
Anyone interested email: Bill Hewitt - rcpower@bhyc.on.ca
clothing on Appetizer night May 11th and New Members night
on May 18th.
We will have 7” transom stickers of our official 50th anniversary
They will be available in limited quantity so get yours before
they are gone.
50th anniversary commemorative pennants are now available
for order and will be delivered ready to fly at sail past $25
each. This is a chance to take part in BHYC tradition as they
will display a special reissued 50th logo reminiscent of our 25th
anniversary pennants. These pennants are designed to be flown
on their own or with our club burgee. Long standing members
can fly the original 25th and new pennant together! If you are
Game Changer in Charleston
We are just heading out sailing for the day and can't wait for the rest of the crew to get here so we can get going
with this regatta. We've a great fleet down here of about 270 boats of all sizes from TP 52s to J22s. Our division
is made up of 4 J111s, 2 J122s, 2 J130s, 2 1D35s, an X 41 and a Benny 47.7 and we all rate within about 9
seconds in PHRF. Its gonna be really good competition and racing. - Dave Smith
Crew Connect
I’ve been racing sailboats for the past five years and
have become accustomed to organizing the boat and
crew with spreadsheets, email groups, and even on
paper. Having a background in web development, I put my
skills to use a couple of years ago by posting our schedule
online and creating a form in which the crew could RSVP
for each race of the season. Because the entire crew could
view and update their race availability from anywhere at
any time, this really streamlined our crew-management
work and allowed us to focus on more important things—
like sailing.
Because we had a lot of success with this little web app I
made, I thought to myself, why don’t I make this available
for all boats? I added more features like a crew contact list,
sail inventory manager, and a crew to-do list. I call it
CrewConnect. Since I officially launched the website last
December 24, 2011, over 150 boats and crews have registered.
It’s easy to get started and is completely free. Go to
www.crewconnectonline.com sign up, create a boat
network, invite your crew to sign up, and join your boat
network. I hope everyone finds CrewConnect as useful as
my crew has!
2012 PHRF Certificates
As explained in the last issue of Signal, there have been
many changes to PHRF handicaps in 2012. These
changes are now reflected in the ratings posted on the
PHRF-LO website at http://www.phrf-lo.org
The PHRF-LO website also now allows all certificate holders
to download their certificates as .PDF files. Go to Valid Lists
in the tabs at the top of the homepage and search for your boat.
Once you have found your boat, click on the PDF symbol to
download the file. Because this download is now available,
you will not be receiving a paper copy from us.
The second page of this new download file is a checklist.
Please review the items on this checklist carefully and let one
of us know if there are any discrepancies on your certificate.
Remember that you should be letting us know if:
- You have bought a new boat
- You have new sails
- You have made any modifications to your boat
If you have not yet registered for Club racing, your certificate
will show as INVALID. Your PHRF certificate will be renewed
and show as VALID once you submit your registration for Club
racing with payment. (The $20 fee for a PHRF certificate is included
in the registration fee.) Registration instructions can be
found on the racing page of the BHYC website www.bhyc.on.ca.
The first Club race is May 15th - only a few weeks away!
And finally, if you have any questions about any of this,
please get in touch with one of your BHYC PHRF reps.
How to choose and use a bulletproof storm jib
Remember that storm jib you bought with the boat? When
was the last time you hanked it, hoisted it, and tested it?
Many sailors never have, and this highly specialized boat
sail gets left in a sail bag--until extreme conditions call for an exit
strategy!
But if you don't know what it takes to rig it, you will be in a
world of hurt when you need it the most. Make sure you go
through a drill with your sailing crew with this champion of
heavy weather sailing.
Called a storm jib, spit-fire, or a #3, these special sails are made
to do one thing--get you to windward when no other sail will perform
the task as well.
Of course you can use them for reaching or running, but the
primary emphasis will always be punching to windward.
Consider this scenario: You are in heavy going with a breeze
that approaches gale force. You've allowed the boat to get a bit
too close to the coast. Now you must "claw" your way to windward
to gain sea-room and safety.
You may have heard the term "clawing off a lee shore". Better
have the right sails for the job. And they don't exist in the form of
furling sails!
The Five Part Perfect Storm Jib
1. Build with the Right Cloth Weight
Choose a "soft hand" cruising cloth instead of one with a high
resin coating. Soft hand sailcloth will be easier to handle, more
forgiving of chafe and flogging, and will last longer. Have your
storm jib built with the right weight to take the high loads and
stress of howling wind and pounding sea. Follow these specs:
Boats Less than 40 feet: Use 10 Oz. Dacron sailcloth.
Boats Over 40 feet: Use 12 to 14 Oz. Dacron sailcloth.
2. Hoist on a Separate Inner Stay
Cutter-rigged boats should hoist on the inner staysail stay (also
called the forestay). Sloops that will be in exposed weather can
use the head stay, but a far safer arrangement will be a collapsible,
inner stay. You will need a hefty deck eye with heavy backup
plates installed below to distribute the load.
3. Beef Up Hanks for Point Loading
Ask your sailmaker to install heavy reinforced patching for each
grommet just behind the luff boltrope (the reinforcement rope
sewn along the length of the luff). Expect flogging and gusting in
such conditions. An occasional sea could break aboard to stress
any point where the sail gets attached. So, each hank needs its
own patch with a grommet punched in to take the loads and prevent
tears.
4. Hollow the Foot and Raise on a Pennant
Area will be your enemy. Any foot round (extra cloth that a
Genoa or jib carries outside of the straight clew-to-tack line) will
flog, so a storm jib must have a bit of "hollow" on the foot.
Raise the foot with a tack pennant (also called a pendant). Make
the pennant out of wire rope or high tech fiber rope with eyes on
each end. Install stainless thimbles into each eye (similar to the
thimble used in the eye of a rope anchor rode). Thimbles protect
the wire or synthetic rope from chafe. The raised pennant protects
the sail from a boarding sea and gives you better "under the foot"
visibility.
5. Never, Ever Use a Furling Sail!
Under no circumstances should a furling sail be used in winds in
the range of gale force or above (30+ knots). That's the fastest
way to blow out a sail, risk the possibility of mechanical furling
unit problems, and this places enormous side loads on the extrusion
tube and sail.
There are many stories of units failing in such conditions. Blow
out a furling unit with the sail part-way unfurled and you will find
it difficult to lower the sail. The friction placed against the luff
sandwiched inside the narrow groove of an extrusion tube makes
hauling the sail down next to impossible.
But what about those furling sails used by skippers in extreme
offshore races? Those are highly specialized and expensive sails
custom designed for boats manned by pro crews. Keep furling
sails furled in high wind conditions for sailing safety! Use a well
designed storm jib made for the conditions at hand.
Follow these simple sailing tips to learn to sail in heavy weather
conditions better than ever before. Gain the confidence and skills
you need to be ready to meet heavy weather--wherever in the
world you choose to cruise!
