Life without printing and media
is simply unthinkable – books,
newspapers, packaging, instructions for
use, posters, prospectuses, business
cards and tickets are an integral part of
everyday life. Even the rise of digital media
has not displaced print media, but rather
enriched it: The various methods of communication
are stimulating each other,
opening up new and intelligent opportunities
which form our everyday life. Therefore,
the international printing and media
industry is looking to the drupa 2012
event with a great deal of excitement, the
most important and largest trade fair of its
sector in the world. Furthermore, whilst in
the Western industrial countries the printing
and media industry is experiencing a
profound structural change, the markets
in the emerging countries of Asia and Latin
America are dynamically developing.

drupa has been unearthing, explaining
and promoting the mega trends of the in-
dustry for more than 60 years, has been
setting impulses for the development in
the next few years and has presented the
complete global market offer – this also
at the forthcoming 15th event. Whether
they are global players or striving newcomers
and software/IT companies, service
providers from the emerging countries
or the industrial nations – they will all be
represented at drupa from 03 to 16 May
2012. „The entire trade fair ground with
its 19 halls will transform into the biggest
printing house in the world during this period.

in Hall 7.0. The dip, with approximately
130 exhibitors, is composed of nine topical
worlds. Innovative print products such
as lenticular, 3D printing, electronic printing,
augmented reality or the „tool kit“ for
cross-media campaigns, in other words
the preparation of content for the media
channels of print, tablet PCs and smartphones,
will be presented. The special
feature is the spatial proximity to the drupa
cube presented by digi:media in Hall
7a – the event and conference location on
the topic of cross-media communication.
drupa Cube: Trends in marketing,
publishing & creation
The drupa visitors will be able to obtain
information about trendsetting technologies
in the dip, and the neighbouring
drupa cube will provide the associated
content and business solutions. At this
location everything will revolve around the
trends in cross-media, print-based communication
for 13 days duration. Print
buyers, those making marketing decisions,
advertisers, publishing companies
and creative persons are invited. Each
exhibition day has its own motto, from
„Print – Web – Mobile“ to the „Day of Corporate
Communication“ and the „Day of
Newspapers“. Whether it is magazines,
books, out-of-home applications, dialogue
marketing, packaging, electronic
printing or media production – on each
day there will be a half-day symposium on
the various communication models. More

Sustainability:
Media Mundo@drupa
The special show „Media Mundo@drupa“
(Hall 9, Stand E55) will revolve around
the topic of sustainability in media production.
Visitor information, live discus-
sions and exciting presentations given by
experts and industry giants (such as Don
Carli, President of Nima Hunter, USA) will
be offered on approximately 240 m² of exhibition
space. Here, innovations, stimuli
and sustainability concepts from diverse
fi elds revolving around sustainable media
production will be found. Alongside associations
such as the World Wide Fund for
Nature (WWF), the Forest Steward Councilship
(FSC), the European Waterless
Printing Association (EWPA), the Allianz
deutscher Designer [Alliance of German
Designers] (AGD), the International Association
of the Deinking Industry (INGEDE)
and the Bundesverband Druck und Medien
[Federal Association for Printing and
Media] (bvdm), service providers from
the paper, energy, media production,
process and workfl ow management and
packaging sectors will present themselves.
All of the lectures will be broadcast
parallel and live on the Internet and those
watching from all over the world will be
able to pose questions to the respective
speakers via Twitter.
World premiere of the
58th TDC Show
The most important competition in the
world on the topic of font – the Type Directors
Club of New York – will be stopping
by at drupa and presenting the prize
winners of the current competition to the
world public for the fi rst time (Hall 6, Stand
B 06). 223 awards for work from 21 countries
were bestowed from 1,600 entries,
47 pieces of work come from Germany.
Diego Vainesmann, the TDC President
and Carol Wahler, Managing Director of
TDC, will come from the USA to open the
58th TDC show on 03 May (3 pm). This
year, the TDC show will be accompanied
by the type design competition TDC2 as
well as the new TDC Title Design, a competition
for innovative opening credits and
moving image typography.

drupacity: A city sees red
Since the drupa 2000 event, Düsseldorf
has been transforming into the drupacity
during drupa: A network of partners from
the catering, retail, art and culture trade
come together to make the stay in Düsseldorf
as pleasant as possible for guests
from all over the world. A highlight will be
the vessel fi t for the high seas, the drupaperboat
made by the Dutch paper designer
Filip Jonker which will be anchored in
the Kö-Graben. The 7.50 m long and 2.65
m wide boat made from 2,000 kilograms
of paper with 2,500 kilograms of sand as
ballast, has been made extra waterproof
for journeys by sea. Its test journey last
September went from Rotterdam over
the channel to the Thames Festival in
England. Other offers in the city will also
convey the core topics of the drupa 2012
well and in an understandable way. In the
shopping malls around the Kö, artists
will present their work with print and pa-
per for the drupart project – these range
from highly fashionable accessories from
paper to individually designed pieces of
furniture made from paper.
drupa will be open on a daily basis from
10 am to 6 pm (until 5 pm at the weekends).

A four day ticket costs 129
euros online in comparison to 220 euros
when purchasing on site. The reduced
entry fee for students and trainees is also
even better online: 15 euros instead of 25

Only a few weeks left and then the slogan
in Düsseldorf is „one world – one
drupa“. A highlight of the world‘s largest
print and media trade fair will again be the
drupa cube. Staged over 13 days, everything
here revolves around the trends in
printing communication. Invitations have
been extended to print buyers, marketing
decision makers, advertisers, publishing
houses and creative people. Here, you
will obtain comprehensive information on
which print products will combine communications
capability with commercial
success in the future.
„Someone who is responsible for marketing
and publishing will not have a great
interest in the technology with which a
print product is realised“, says Manuel
Mataré, Director of drupa 2012. „It is only
important to him or her which advantages
can be gained. It is exactly this information
that we, together with our partners,
offer in the drupa cube – on every day
of the trade fair.“ Each trade fair day will
have its own motto, starting with „Print –
Web – Mobile“ to „Day of Corporate Communication“
up to „Day of Newspapers“.
Whether magazines, books, out-of-home
(home offi ce) applications, dialogue marketing,
packaging, electronic printing
or media production – everyday sees a
half-day symposium on the various types

Creative highlights
at the weekend
drupa has developed the programme in
collaboration with its national and international
partners from the printing and
media industry. Amongst others, the Akademie
des Deutschen Buchhandels (Academy
of the German Book Trade), the Typografi
sche Gesellschaft München TDG,
the Type Directors Club of New York TDC,
the Deutsche Fachpresse (German Trade
Press Association), the Forum Corporate
Publishing FCP, the Deutsche Dialogmarketing
Verband ddv (German Dialog
Marketing Association), the Fachverband
Medienproduktioner f:mp, the Organic
Electronic Association (oe-a) as well as
the European Specialist Printing Manufacturers
Association ESMA are active in
the drupa cube.
Both weekends offer special highlights:
With the „Creative Weekend“ and two
days on the topic of „Future of Print“.
On the third and fourth day of drupa, the
„Creative Weekend“ deals with modern
typography in a cross-media context. On
the second weekend the speakers take a
look at the future of print production. The
programme not only addresses marketing
decision makers and advertisers but also
traditional drupa visitors. With the oe-a as
partner, there will be a symposium on the
topic of printed electronics on Saturday.
Sunday is organised by the ESMA with
lectures on 3D and functional printing.

13 days, 13 topics
The bilingual programme (simultaneous
in German and English) is geared towards
international specialists. The drupa cube
2012 is located directly next to the drupa
innovation park on the exhibition grounds
– technology and application can thus be
easily interlinked. The symposiums of the
drupa cube 2012 take place on every trade
fair day from 10:15 am to 1:30 pm. The
ticket for a one-day event costs 199 Euros.
This includes the admission to drupa
2012 and a lunch on the respective day.

Mosca reveals future
of strapping industry
MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF DIVERSIFICATION IN THE
CORRUGATED BOARD MARKET
As a regular exhibitor at drupa, strapping
specialist Timo Mosca, CEO of
Waldbrunn-based Mosca AG, has lived
through and observed the changes in the
printing and paper industries over many
years.
Together with Alfred Kugler, Head of
Marketing and Sales at Mosca AG, he explains
where new challenges and future
markets can be found, how his company
– predominantly manufacturing in Germany
– can prevail in the face of worldwide
competition and why he claims technological
leadership in the strapping industry.
In what areas are strapping machines
used in the printing and
paper industries?
Timo Mosca: In an extremely diverse range
of sectors and production contexts.
The requirements our machines have to
fulfi ll differ from industry to industry and
application to application. Wholesalers,
for example, require machines that are
easy to operate and allow reliable overnight
order picking and packing. This is
an area where compact automatic machines
are at home. The graphics industry
requires fully automated, process-reliable
machines, such as our RO-TRI, to quickly

and effi ciently process their orders. For
the corrugated board industry, we supply
high performance machines that can
be integrated into a production line for
smooth high- speed strapping of individual
stacks or entire pallets.
What share of your sales revenues
is accounted for by the print
and paper industries?
Timo Mosca: These two sectors are our
main customers. While they used to take
an equal share, the corrugated board
industry has now signifi cantly overtaken
the printing sector. This is also refl ected
in the shift of focus of drupa: corrugated
board processors, which previously only
had small stands at the show, now have a
much bigger exhibition presence.
To what extent are changes in
the corrugated board market important
for strapping?
Alfred Kugler: There is a difference whether
the corrugated board is processed
as sheets to be used for purposes such
as interleaving in logistics or whether it is
intended to be enhanced into board for
primary packaging. In the fi rst case, the
main concern is to achieve high-speed
strapping, while the priority in the latter
case is for gentle strapping. For high
speeds, pallet strapping machines such
as our KCK 131-26 are ideal. At a rate of
200 pallets per hour, this is the fastest
pallet strapping machine in the world. De-
mand for gentle strapping is continuously
rising. Using soft tensioning of the strap
in single, double or cross-strapping, our
technology creates a securely strapped
bundle that protects the product and retains
stability. Years ago, we developed
inline strapping specifi cally for the corrugated
board industry. In this method,
the strapping runs in line with the board
corrugations and not across them, ensuring
very gentle strapping of corrugated
board sheets.
Where are your future markets?
Alfred Kugler: In terms of the industries
we serve, we aim to continue growing in
the corrugated board sector and establish
ourselves as market leaders. We are
also looking along the production chain.
Corrugated board manufacturers supply
fl at boxes to industries such as the food
processors, which assemble the boxes
and pack their products in them. For transport,
these products then have to be palletized
and strapped. Consequently, the
customers of the corrugated board producers
can also become our customers.
Timo Mosca: From a regional perspective,
Asia – particularly China and Southeast
Asia – is important for us. The
corrugated board industry is growing at
a rapid rate, especially in China, where
China Green Paper is currently developing
one of the world’s largest corrugated

board factories, utilizing high-quality
technology for all stages of the value
chain – including Mosca strapping machines.
At the same time, we wish to
continue diversifying in other markets and
driving our developments in new industries
– for example in the construction and
ceramics industries.
You refer to yourselves as technological
leaders in the industry –
on what grounds do you base this?
Timo Mosca: We repeatedly bring new
stimuli to the market. For example, we
were the fi rst company to use DC machines,
powered by non-wearing direct
drives – a system that has become a
standard throughout the industry. The
SoniXs technology that we developed is
also unique. No other company manufacturers
a strapping machine that uses
ultrasound to seal the strap ends.
Alfred Kugler: It is not always quantum
leaps in technology that make the difference.
Frequently it is precisely the gradual
improvements that become apparent
only when you become more involved
with the market and customers and
which then lead to new applications. Take
the oxidation-free SoniXs TRP-VA, which
we developed specifi cally to meet the rigorous
hygiene requirements of the food
industry. This was possible only because
we use ultrasonic strap sealing. The fi sh
industry now, at last, has a sustainably
working machine for strapping their fi sh
crates that no longer need to be scrapped
after six months because it has rusted
away.
How do you deal with the fact that
competitors from low-cost economies
copy your technologies and
machines?
Timo Mosca: It is naturally quicker and
cheaper to copy something than to develop
it yourself – and mechanical engineering
is not rocket science. However,
the key factor that distinguishes us, especially
from the Chinese companies, is
our comprehensive approach. We do not
simply ask, “how do I construct a machine?”
Instead, we look into what is the
customer’s problem. Working processes
are simplifi ed, but the complexity of the individual
machine components increases.
Continuity of the workforce is essential to
be able to keep abreast of developments.
In Asia, with a high rate of employment
turnover, this is a problem. Our family
company, by contrast, has built up the
constancy and specialist knowledge that
it needs to explore new developments
over 46 years.
In addition to machinery, you also
produce the straps. At drupa, you
are presenting strap made from
sustainable raw materials. Is this
the future?
Alfred Kugler: PLA strap is made from a
biocompatible polylactide polymer, produced
from renewable raw materials,
such as potato or maize starch, which
can be industrially composted after use.
The clever part is that the strap can be
completely regenerated. Once produced,
the PLA can be reused over and over
again.
There is therefore no need to continuously
expand potato and maize growing areas
to meet rising demand. The development
has not yet been launched on the
market, because the base material for
PLA is currently more expensive than the
raw material for polypropylene strapping,
and we still have no customer willing to
pay this added cost. This will not change
until more pressure comes from end customers
who support the use of renewable
raw materials.

What will you be exhibiting
at drupa?
Alfred Kugler: We are showing a new
generation of machines: the SoniXs MP
Evolution, a successor to our standard
automatic model, which will give new
stimulus. It is a further stage of development
in terms of machine reliability and
performance. We are going more and
more down the road of modularity, based
on high-quality assemblies. By doing this,
we increase reproducibility – which means
that we can continuously guarantee
the same performance and reliability from
the smallest automatic unit to the largest
machine. Our electronic components
create unique selling points for us, which
the competition is unable to match. For
customers, this is refl ected in increased
productivity at lower cost. The largest
machine we will be demonstrating is a
new version of the KZV-111 fully automated
pallet strapping machine with opti-
mized design elements and components.
Use of a narrower strap track now makes
it possible to strap even fl at pallets.
Timo Mosca: We are also focusing heavily
on the theme of reliable integration of
strapping machines in production lines.
To enable this, we offer our customers
machines with full CE functionality, which
can be used without additional structures,
such as enclosures or perspex guards. In
place of these, we manufacture operationally
safe, user-friendly machines, safeguarded
by light screens and light curtains.
These features also benefi t the service
engineer, allowing access to the machine
without fi rst having to unscrew protective
guards. At drupa, we will be presenting
our entire portfolio, from the smallest automatic
machine to the large high-performance
machines and covering everything
from PET, PP and PLA straps to service
and advice.

STAND A07 IN HALL 13
Planatol Group, since 80 years an
established partner of printers, packaging
manufacturers, bookbinders and
coating companies, will show a number
of innovations at drupa 2012, in the fi eld
of fold-gluing systems, adhesives and
binding machines.
Fold-Gluing Systems
Planatol offers high-performance systems
for fold-gluing in web printing. The
systems for longitudinal gluing Combijet
9NET and 9DT produce exact glue lines
and consume very little adhesive. They distinguish
themselves by applicator heads
with a service life of hundreds of millions
of switching cycles. The gluing nozzles
are made of ceramic and last for more
than 400,000 km of contact application.
At drupa, Planatol will show the new
system cabinet of Combijet 9NET in a
modern and compact design. The media
compartment inside the cabinet has
also been improved: The components are
now more conveniently arranged and are
therefore better accessible for maintenance
purposes.
Furthermore, new functions such as web
edge scanning and glue line monitoring
will be presented at drupa. Web edge
scanning means that a sensor scans the
paper web which will stop the glue ap-
plication when the web is not there. With
glue line monitoring a constant glue application
can be ensured.
Planatol is the only supplier world-wide
offering cross-web gluing systems by
means of which paper ribbons can be
glued together also across the web travel.
Products in short-grain size can thus
be realized. At drupa, Planatol will show
Crossjet, a new product study of a gluing
system which is based on a special valve
technique allowing non-contact application
in cross-web gluing for the fi rst time.
Glue dots are shot onto the paper web
with high-end applicator heads which are
arranged across the web. Even at maximum
speed a glue dot will be positioned
in an exact way. With the sophisticated
control system the glue can be placed at
any position on variable formats, as it is
required, for example, in rotogravure printing.
First trial runs have already proved to
be successful. Crossjet is soon to replace
the existing generation of cross-web gluing
systems.
Adhesives based on 80 years of
experience
Planatol offers high-performance adhesives
for bookbinding, fold gluing, forms
and mailings, print fi nishing, packaging as

well as for labels and other applications.
The whole range of adhesive technologies
is covered, from dispersions to PSA,
EVA and PUR hot melts. At drupa, Planatol
will present a diversity of innovations
from the adhesive laboratory: For glossy
fi lm lamination, Planatol has developed
a new dispersion adhesive which features
excellent adhesion properties with
a reduced amount of cross linking agent,
thus saving costs for customers. The new
laminating adhesive can be used both
as a 1-component and a 2-component
system. For perfect binding, Planatol HM
2941 will be presented, a new EVA hot
melt which excels with its very low processing
temperature, reducing energy
costs in the production process. This new
adhesive offers excellent strength of the
perfect binding and can also be used in
the two-shot process. Another highlight
at drupa will be Planatol’s new PSA adhesive
for casemaking. The PSA is resistant
to temperature variations and ensures
absolutely fl at book covers in winter and
optimum production speeds in summer. It
is easy to process and provides excellent
adhesion even on diffi cult cover materials.
Planatol’s PUR hot melts offer excellent
processing properties and very high
strength as well as a high temperature
resistance. Specifi cally for the requirements
of perfect binding, a new PUR adhesive
has been developed, which – for
the fi rst time – combines the advantages
of the PUR technology with a perfect layfl
at ability. With the versatile Planatol PUR
2880, an additional low-emission variant
and other types, Planatol covers all applications
in book production.
Planax binding machines and Plana
adhesive products
At drupa, Planatol will present the successful
Planax Copy Binder 5 in a new
design. This offi ce binding machine enables
to bind single documents or short print
runs professionally and in a high quality. It
excels with high performance, easy operation
and a favourable price. The newly
developed Planax Strips are used as binding
spines. These thermo binding strips
made of linen have an adhesive coating
which ensures excellent durability – even
with diffi cult papers.
In addition, Planatol’s presentation will include
the Plana Dots from the Plana product
line. Plana Dots are glue dots made
from pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive
for all kinds of professional packaging applications
for printed products.

At the stand from bielomatik visitors
can experience a selection
of the latest paper processing machines
and an RFID label production unit live.
Flexibility isn‘t just bielomatik‘s drupa
motto, rather it is now the focus of the
entire paper and converting industry:
Smaller order batches require shorter
changeover times and variable use of the
machinery for the production of the most
varied orders.
The new cross cutter CFS 105 is a true
„all-rounder“ that can not only cut diver-
se sizes and grammages without leaving
marks, but also above all the most varied
materials: Carton, fi lm and naturally also
coated and uncoated paper. Also preprinted
rolls can be cut according to printing
register. The new development from bielomatik,
which is based on decades of experience
in the cross cutter area, can be
integrated into current ERP and workfl ow
management systems. With its extremely
compact design in the „roll to sheets“
area, it should appeal to print shops, paper
mills and paper trading companies as
well as the packaging industry.

The innovations in Düsseldorf also in-
clude the multi-layer laminating machine
SpeedLiner T-165 for Smart labels. On
the compact RFID production unit that
can be modularly expanded, labels for
textiles, so-called „hang tags“ will be produced
at the stand with which a „permanent
inventory“ will be simulated on-site.
The reliable reject function for defective
transponders, the „bad inlay removal“,
ensures perfect product quality. The
SpeedLiner also offers a controled hot
melt application in addition to a new ticket
delivery unit. The new optional fold delivery
enables a high degree of size fl exibility.
The fl agship for the fully automatic production
of spiral and wire comb-bound
products, the P 35-49 Plus, can also be
seen in operation at the drupa. Thanks to
the 2-up binding drum, a speed increased
by 33 % is possible in the wire comb
binding (80 instead of 60 cycles). With the
new cartridge system for the punching
and cutting unit as well as electronic setting
of cut-off lenghts and sheet counts,
the size changing times are reduced by
almost the half. Flexibility with maximum
effi ciency is currently essential for futureoriented
machine equipment.
For customers entering into professional
exercise book production, bielomatik
developed the P 24-90. The expandable
system at a particularly attractive price/
performance ratio is convincing thanks to
its reliable performance and high product
quality. The simple operation and maintenance
of the exercise book line P 24-90
enables use above all in newly developing
markets.

Beckhoff will present its PC-based control
technology for the printing and paper industry
at Drupa between 3 and 16 May
in Düsseldorf, Germany. With powerful
Industrial PCs, the fast EtherCAT communication
system and TwinCAT automation
software the technology offers a high
degree of integration. That means, in addition
to the basic functions PLC, Motion
Control and visualisation, the solution also
integrates high-precision measurement
technology, Condition Monitoring and safety
technology on a single PC platform,
without the need for special additional
hardware. Furthermore, the Beckhoff Industrial
PCs have adequate capacity reserves
for application software, e.g. for
controlling the web edges and registers.
In addition to higher productivity, PCbased
control also offers more effi cient
engineering with lower hardware costs.
PC-based Control from Beckhoff offers
users an integrated control and drive platform
that covers all aspects from the fi eld
level to the IT level, including pre-print,
print and post-print. PC-based control
enhances production effi ciency and fl exibility
as well as the application scope of
printing machines. In view of increasingly
complex requirements for packaging
printing, traceability of the production
process or production of small batch si-
zes, this aspect is becoming ever more
important. Highly integrated PC Control
solution replaces special hardware
Scientifi c Automation from Beckhoff
stands for an extended notion of automation,

functions run on a central PC and are
mapped in software. It is based on highperformance

Industrial PC series integrate the latest
second-generation Intel® processors, i.e.

The CX2000 Embedded PC range now
makes multi-core technology available in
compact embedded devices. TwinCAT 3

distribution of the application across
the available CPU cores, enables the

away with special hardware not only

but also reduces the costs for hardware
and engineering through integration of all
functions in a single development environment.
High processor power in conjunction
with EtherCAT, the high-speed
Ethernet system, results in an optimised
control and communication architecture,
known as XFC technology (eXtreme
Fast Control). XFC and EtherCAT – highspeed-automation
in printing machines
Beckhoff offers an extremely fast control

solution in the XFC technology: it enables
I/O response times of less than 100 µs,
resulting in signifi cantly enhanced machine
performance. In combination with fast
EtherCAT I/Os it is possible, for example,
to implement the register control with
standard control and drive components,
without the need for special hardware
and dedicated drive controllers. Highspeed
communication between the I/O
signals and the controller offers machine
manufacturers advanced options such
as Motion Control with many axes, synchronised
through the distributed clocks
of EtherCAT (100 axes in 100 µs), with
nanosecond precision. The distributed
clock functionality guarantees fast and
exact identifi cation of print marks, for example.
It is implemented with standard
components, and TwinCAT automation
software facilitates programming via
the common programming languages.
TwinCAT 3: effi cient engineering and
free choice of programming language
Effi cient software engineering is enabled
through embedding in Microsoft Visual
Studio® as an integrated development
environment. TwinCAT 3 supports all
common programming standards, including
C/C++, integration of Matlab®/Simulink®,
and the object-oriented IEC 61131-
3 extension, and thus enables optimum
programming for the respective task.
Ready-made and frequently used IEC
61131-3 blocks for web tension control,
winding and unwinding algorithms, register
control in conjunction with very fast
signal processing and comprehensive
Motion Control functionalities are available
as software libraries. This results in signifi
cant engineering benefi ts for the user.
Highly dynamic drive technology
for printing and paper machines
With its comprehensive range of scalable
drive solutions Beckhoff covers a wide
range of applications, including axes for
adjusting the print rollers, high-precision
drives for the actual printing units, and
high-performance winding and unwinding
units. The EL7201 servo terminal for direct
connection of servomotors up to 200 W
forms a full, compact Servo Drive that is
suitable for lettershop handling, transport
and sorting processes, for example. The
EtherCAT Servo Drives of the AX5000 series
are designed for higher loads up to
170 A. The new Beckhoff servomotors of
the AM8000 series offer optimum dynamics
and energy effi ciency as well as high
availability. One highlight of the AM8000
motors is the one cable technology. This
means that only one standard connection
is required for feedback and power,
which results in a signifi cant reduction of
material and installation cost and enables
fl exible application.

MAILINGS WITH MANY VARIATIONS, ECONOMICAL INSERTIONS,
FLEXIBLE FILM WRAPPING
Using a combination of twice
the fl oor space, a move to a
more promising Hall (14, stand D33) and
large scale live presentations, Hugo Beck
will be concentrating on effi cient postprint
processing with many variations and
presenting new impulses for the preparation
of individual mailings, more economical
inserting systems and fl exible fi lm
packaging technology for the print and
publishing industry. Once again, new standards
are about to be set, driven by the
fl agship neo X advance, the inserting machine
ESM 15 and the mailline advance.
The fi rst highlight at this year’s Drupa is
an improved and optimised version of the
neo X advance. This machine concept is
the only one of its kind in the market that
can be used both for the overlap sealing
of fi lm packaging as well as side sealing.
Within the shortest possible time, a changeover
from overlap sealing used as
standard, to the more sophisticated side
sealing and vice versa can be achieved. In
this way, the neo X advance makes Hugo
Beck the only manufacturer up until now
which is in a position to utilise a modular
method of construction to unite both
technologies into one machine.
The result speaks for itself: Variable cycle
times of 12,000 per hour for the side
sealing and up to as much as 18,000
per hour for overlap sealing are possible.
Publishing houses which have opted
for a neo X advance are able to offer their
customers both types of packaging with
a single machine, saving the need for
other machines as well as space, and are

furthermore also rewarded with a plus -
thanks to this investment - regarding fl exibility
and production safety. For ambitious
publishers, this machine also offers an
extension which is becoming increasingly
in demand again: it can in addition also be
converted for use with paper packaging.
Similar ambitions are shown by Hugo
Beck in the case of workfl ow in the inserting
and feeding area. For the live presentation,
an advanced development of the
inserting machine ESM 15 will be coupled
with a saddle stitching machine from Heidelberger.
It will demonstrate how bound
blocks can be fed in a double stream and
fi nally be provided with a supplement.
The ESM 15 is also equipped with rotary
feeders which are fl exible and freely
moving at all times. If the universal feeder
HB 350 is used, it is possible to feed and
process the products also independently
of the saddle stitching machine. The ESM
15 inserting machine exhibited at Drupa
operates in a performance range of up to
22,000 products per hour.
As if not already enough, Hugo Beck will
be showing various new solutions in the
fi eld of effective mailing processing. The
start will be made by the mailline advance
on which it is possible to produce a selfmailer:
to an envelope-free, creatively designed
mailing a giveaway will be fed by
a Pick & Place feeder, attached, creased,
folded and closed.
Hugo Beck also offers effective marketing
options in the newspaper publishing
market: A new mailline will be shown, on
which a daily newspaper will be fed using a
newspaper
ZA 450 feeder. This is the
only feeder of its kind which works in the
mid performance range up to 10,000 cycles
per hour according to a non-rotary
principle. This technology is able to safely
feed newspapers which have a product
thickness of up to 30 mm and works with
a thickness tolerance of +10 mm, which
is automatically equalised. On the other
hand, the company is showing how a
cover-page or a fl yer can be fed onto the
newspaper with the friction feeder RA
250 and then being attached to it.
The product presentation will be rounded
off by a new addressing facility for printing
and sticking address labels for mail order
applications. Optionally, the address labels
can also be rotated by 90°.
Besides this, the extremely fl exible fi lm
packaging machine servo X for smaller
specialty printers will be presented. This
offers an appropriate feed cycle for products
which are spaced at different intervals
or product lengths and has a variable
fi ne adjustment when the machine is
running. As if that were not enough, the
owner of such a machine will also save
the investment for a shrink tunnel when
sealing in CPP.
In addition, Hugo Beck has also given
some thought about the old stand location
in Hall 12, Stand A62. A fl exo X will
be on display here for individualized fi lmwrapping.

JETSCRIPT Inkjet Paper
Mitsubishi presents a full line of coated inkjet
papers for „White Paper Solutions“ for
colour transactional and transpromotional
printing, direct mail, brochures or book
printing. Part of the range are also matte
and glossy coated inkjet papers, which
were specifi cally designed for the self adhesive
label industry who are looking for
a quality coated face paper for impressive
colourful label applications. Thanks to
the special coating, the ink is managed in
an optimum manner to achieve maximum
densities and pinpoint precision. True colour
reproduction, colour brilliance, print
density and sharpness of the print image
are offering an eye catching label design.
All grades are FSC-certifi ed and are suitable
for the normal recycling system.
THERMOSCRIPT Thermal Paper
The thermal papers on environmentally
friendly recycled base paper are focus
on the concept of sustainability. The products
are made from 100% FSC recycled
pulp, without showing any loss of the
good functionality. Relevant factors such
as smoothness, brightness, stability, printability
and print head behaviour are on
the usual high level. Mitsubishi offers the
recycled thermal paper grades currently
in weights of 80g and 170g. They are
used for example as lottery tickets, parking
tickets or admission tickets. At the
same time, Mitsubishi presents innovative
safety features for thermal paper with a
high degree of protection against forgery.
Whether coloured centre, watermarks
or digital watermarks, security fi bres, or
even a combination of several features
- the product range is wide. These thermoscript
products are not only used in
the segment of transportation tickets or
event tickets, but in many other applications
as a security solution of choice.
GIROFORM Carbonless Paper
Giroform Digital is perfectly suited for
the production of high quality personalised
carbonless forms. With a standard
of 90g/m2 and a Light weight of 60g/m2,
Mitsubishi HiTec Paper assures best print
quality on digital (laser) and offset presses.
While Giroform Digital was designed
for presses like HP Indigo and Kodak
Nexpress, Giroform DIGITAL Light is perfect
for black and white or colour printing
on offi ce and industrial presses and was
tested on Canon imagePRESS and Konica

At drupa, the Düsseldorf printing
and paper trade fair, Forbo
Siegling will showcase new machine
tapes that enhance effi ciency in the printing,
paper and packaging industry (from
3 to 16 May, hall 13/stand D 66).
Forbo Siegling will present its machine
tapes with HighGrip coating as one of
the highlights. The coating ensures very
good grip which increases the reliability
of the machinery, as well as the quality of
the goods conveyed. This is particularly
the case when elastic machine tapes and
belts with fabric tension members from
the Siegling Extremultus and Siegling
Transilon series are operated. These coated
belts are ideal for conveying products
in nearly all areas of the paper, printing
and packaging industry.
At drupa, Forbo Siegling will show boxfolding
belts especially for the packaging
sector. These belts comply with the current
FDA/EU regulations that stipulate
that not just the surfaces, but all the components
including the intermediate layers
and tension members, must demonstrate
compliance with the new regulations. The
belts are used in manufacturing cardboard
boxes, corrugated cardboard and
tissue products and have virtually constant
grip during operation. They also have
strong edges and the tension remains
stable, making re-tensioning is unnecessary.
As a result, the belts function reliably,
running costs are low and the effi ciency
of the machinery as a whole increases.
Forbo Siegling will also showcase new
folder belts for high-speed folders (commercial
printing). These have highly abrasion-resistant
fabric coatings on both
sides with almost constant grip over the
whole of their product lives. They also leave
no marks and tension remains stable.
Another benefi t is that they only pick up
very little silicone and paper dust, so they
last much longer.

For more than 30 years Gämmerler
has been one of the most well
known brands in the printing arena, supplying
and manufacturing postpress inline
fi nishing equipment worldwide. Since

the automated palletization of bundles are
the main components of this system. In
addition the line is equipped with an automatic
system for pallet-feeding and removing.

for automatic format pre-setting allows an
optimization of the production processes
and therefore increasing the installation‘s
profi tability considerably. On booth C26
in hall 6 Gämmerler will show essential refi
nements and further developments of its
existing product portfolio. The simulation

MIMAKI TO SHOWCASE LATEX AND SOLVENT
UV PRINT SOLUTIONS AT DRUPA 2012
Mimaki, a leading manufacturer
of wide-format inkjet
printers, is to present its latest Latex and
solvent print solutions at Drupa 2012. The
company will also unveil its new high-gap
UV-LED fl atbed printer. The exhibition
takes place 3 – 16 May in Dusseldorf,
Germany. Mimaki can be found in hall 9
at stand C21.
Delegates visiting the stand will see the
high-speed, high-quality JV400LX series,
which uses environmentally friendly latex
ink, including the world’s fi rst white latex
ink. Also on show will be the JV400SUV
series, which combines the fl exibility of
solvent printing with the durability of UVcuring
inks.
Both systems employ Mimaki’s easy-touse
RIP, RasterLink6, which enables three
ink layers in one pass with white and colour
inks. And they offer outstanding print
speed without compromising quality. The
systems can print up to 18.1 m2/h, while
a minimum dot size of 4 picoliters and the
ability to use variable-sized ink dots ensures
smooth gradation without a grainy
appearance.
The advanced system opens up new
opportunities by enabling print houses
to print on a wider range of substrates.
Other benefi ts include a new white ink
circulation system that prevents pigment
sedimentation, and a nozzle recovery
function that temporarily restores print
quality if a maintenance issue should arise.
Plus it enhances print service providers’
green credentials thanks to its small
environmental footprint and long-life, low
power consumption. Mimaki Europe has
experienced a lot of European interest in
this next generation printer after its introduction
at the 2012 Fespa Digital show in
Barcelona.
New opportunities with innovative
solutions
The UJF-3042HG desktop fl atbed printer
will also take the stage at Drupa. The
new High Gap (HG) version can print up
to 15cm-high objects, making it ideal for
the promotional, trophy and commercial
proofi ng markets. It offers multiple ink
combinations like six-colours plus white
and clear, but also an automatic priming
feature, allowing to retain the look and feel

of the substrates, while equally reducing
time spent on manual priming and waste.
Other Mimaki UV fl atbed printers on view
at Drupa are the UJF-3042FX and the
wide format fl atbed range, the Mimaki
JFX series. The UJF-3042FX prints directly
on materials up to 5cm thick, with
outstanding print quality of up to 1440 x
1200 dpi and the energy-effi cient LED
curing. Meanwhile the JFX features highprecision
printing at great speeds with a
large production capability.

CHOOSES EAE LOOP. SYSTEM
The Axel Springer AG has placed an
order with EAE for the installation of
the colour control system loop. On three
webs, on one of their manroland COLOR-
MAN printing presses, based at the printing
site Ahrensburg near Hamburg.
After an extensive comparison of all colour
controls systems that are currently
offered on the market, the printing house
decided to choose the loop. system from
EAE in Ahrensburg.
The EAE solution differs from other suppliers
by the manner of the measurement
method. In the system developed by EAE,
the entire web width is completely measured,
without control patches. Thus it
is possible to ensure the colour balance
across the full page and the whole cir-
culation. The loop. system automatically
measures and controls. At the same time
a “Web inspection” is implemented which
means that failures in the printing process
are also immediately detected.
The plant manager of the Axel Springer
printing plant in Ahrensburg, Mr. Thomas
Drensek, assesses the decision for such
a colour control system as a future-oriented
investment for his printing house. “An
innovative development of EAE with excellent
prospects for future use”, said Mr.
Drensek when signing the contract.

The high speed punching and embossing
machines from the German manufacturer,
Emmendinger Maschinenbau GmbH,
for the production of sealing covers, plates,
lids, IML, labels and packaging segments
of aluminium, plastic or paper, get
a steadily increasing position on international
packaging markets. The machines
are based on a modular concept and a
very solid and reliable technology with a
production speed of up to 400 cycles per
minute, which results with a 8 cavity tool
in a volume of 3.200 lids per minute.
Usability is the name of the game when it
comes to Erhardt+Leimer products. This
becomes apparent in particular with the
newly developed user interfaces ELCU-
BE and ELPAD. They are real milestones
in the world of intuitive operation of web
control and web guiding systems.
A lot has happened in the fi eld of web

Intelligent solutions
At drupa 2012 from 3 to 16 may, Roba-
tech is presenting effi cient and intelligent
solutions for the graphics industry and is
surprising visitors with innovative highlights.
One of the highlights at booth 14 /
B70 are the SpeedStar Diamond application
heads which apply up to 800 dots
of adhesive per second – a world-wide innovation.
The application heads set completely
new standards in terms of speed,
durability and precision. They are hence
well suited for gluing samples or cards
onto paper. Robatech will be presenting
this process, which is referred to as „tipping“,
at drupa. The RobaPurTM 4 MOD
hotmelt units meltand feed PUR hotmelt
adhesives. The melting is accomplished
using the Melton-Demand (MOD) technology.
This ensures that only the quantity
required will be melted. Thanks to the
innovative method, outstanding production
conditions are guaranteed, because
the viscosity of the adhesive remains in
effect as a result. CartoGlue LPTM feeds
opti-Blend
opti-color presents the automatic ink
supply and control system opti-Blend
4000 for usage at modern gravure and
fl exo printing machines. In the ink tanks
the level is measured continuously with
automatic refi ll valves for inks, extender
and solvents. The dosing is based on
individual recipe parameters for each
component. During the dosing the added
amounts are precisely measured to
maintain a constant mix/ratio in the tank.
These data are also used for an effective
analysis of the consumption in process.
By the combination with ViscoStar falling
dispersion adhesive and uses up to four
heads to apply it to print products and packaging
materials. The optional 7“ touchscreen
of the pattern control enables the
user-friendly creation of application patterns.
The operating data software Info-
PlusTM records glue application system
data, uses it to compile a logbook, calculates
consumption data for optimisation
and announces preventive maintenance
measures. The intelligent software can be
used for further processing and evaluation

Standard box-folding
& bonding machine
The model FK-3500 is manufactured in
series since the mid 80s, and was several
time re-engineered during that period.
World-wide over 500 systems have been
installed. The FK-3500 is a fully automatic
box-folding & bonding machine for
gluing, folding, labelling and closing of
various cardboard products. The system
is supplied with a vacuum assisted fl atstaple
belt-feeder (for continuous top-loading),
a pressure-belt, an out-feed-belt,
and the proprietary ROPI Glue-Line, a
microprocessor-controlled gluing system,
including a 2x2 channel controller, 2 coldglue
nozzles (for dot & line operation) as
well as a steel-tank (with liquid level control
& pressure regulator). Additional gluenozzles,
as required for certain products,
can be installed in addition. The operating
area of the machine is fi tted with a cover
for sound and personal protection. The
transport sections feature frequency con-

Bookbinding and
print fi nishing
has been designed for small and middle
sized printing runs and is used by many
companies in the print fi nishing business.
This semi-automatic machine offers an
outstanding cost-performance-ratio and
can be equipped with a multitude of tools
when needed. (Custom-made dies are
also available). The effi cient operating on
the machine can be done by a qualifi ed
operator after a short practice.

„µ-surf-mobile“
These days in quality assurance and
monitoring of production processes
sturdy and fast 3D-measuring systems
become more decisive. In the past only
2D-measuring methods were used, when
manufacturing rotogravure cylinders or
anilox rollers. These methods are often
not suffi cient anymore because of todays
demand on quality (e.g. in security
prinitng, packaging rotogravure) and rising
technical possibilities of the different
engraving types (e.g. direct-laser engraving,
extreme-engraving). Also it is not
possible to measure the volume with 2Dmicroscopes.
To get precise measuring
values of the geometry and the volume
of engraved cells, we have developed the

measure the roughness of surfaces (e.g.

as well as topographic measurements on
printed materials or intaglio plates.

Concepts such as process enhancement
and reduction of
set-up times dominate production cycles
in the printing industry. Now more
than ever technical solutions are required
which are optimally tailored to the needs
of the individual customer. As manufacturer
of folding and inserting machines, Mathias
Bäuerle GmbH will present the appropriate
solutions for the requirements of
the market in the fi eld of print fi nishing at
the drupa 2012 in Hall 13, Stand D49. On
the stand of MB Bäuerle the visitors will
see numerous world premieres as well as
innovative further developments.
Fully automatic folding -
Even more than you asked for
The fully automatic folding machines
prestigeFOLD NET 38 and prestigeFOLD
NET 52 offer maximum ease of operation
combined with CIP4-compatibility. Completely
automatic machine settings, the
robust mechanical construction and a
hig degree of adapatability are the main
characteristics of this buckle fold machine.
The automatic set-up feature takes
care of positioning the setting elements
for fl at pile feeder, fold plate stops, defl
ectors, fold rollers, alignment rails and
delivery rollers. The operator guidance
is logically structured and makes use of
a touch-screen panel. A large number of
standard parallel folds and cross folds are
pre-programmed. All other folds are freely
programmable. More than 200 jobs can
be saved in the program memory. Set-up
times for setting up repetitive jobs are extremely
low, because speed, sheet gap,
etc. are also set automatically.
At the fair, the prestigeFOLD NET 38
will be equipped with a special fold unit
for producing pharmaceutical package
inserts. This supplementary equipment
allows the fully automatic creation of
products with a minimum fold length of
28 mm. Through the combination with
further special attachments and additional
modules, a wide variety of possibilities
can be offered for processing package
inserts, light weight paper and other products
that are glued or folded down to
small formats. Moreover, a code reading
system ensures permanent monitoring
during production.
The prestigeFOLD NET 66, a further
development of the prestigeFOLD NET
52, will be presented at the drupa for the
fi rst time. In addition to well-tried features
such as complete automation and operator
convenience, this new folding machine
offers an even higher fl exibility because
it can handle a larger range of formats.
Among other applications it is possible to
create 3-up A4 products or 24-page A4
signatures. An inline connection to highcapacity
digital printing systems can also

e realised. Designed as a lettershop
version, the prestigeFOLD NET 66 will
be exhibited in a confi guration for feeding
continuous forms from a roll.
Within the range of the prestigeFOLD line
of folders, a further minimisation of setup
times can be achieved with the new
device for mounting the tool shafts. A
laser pointer shows the operator the exact
position of the creasing, cutting and
perforating tools needed for a particular
folding job after the paper size and type of
fold have been chosen. Setting positions
which have been changed later can also
be saved and called up again for repetitive
jobs in no time at all. This eases the workload
of the machine operator, especially
when he is confronted with low print runs
and consequently frequent job changes.
Automatic and highly fl exible –
World premiere for the new highperformance,
multi-format inserting
system
For years MB Bäuerle has been successful
in the fi eld of mail processing as the
manufacturer of the high-performance inserting
systems autoSET 18 and autoSET
XT. With the inserting machine autoSET B4
HighFLEX, MB Bäuerle will present a multi-format-system
which combines a high
degree of variability with top-level operator
convenience. autoSET B4 HighFLEX
handles
all formats
from DL to B4,
and at a maximum speed of
more than 22,000 cycles/h it is ideal for
workplaces where maximum output and
minimum set-up times are required.
The modular design makes it possible
to adapt the inserting system to the individual
needs of the customer. With feeding
systems for cut sheet or continuous
forms, it can either be used as a system
machine or for realising complex tasks.
The modular document track can be
extended to 12 insert stations. Suction,
friction or rotary feeders are available as
insert feeders, depending on the type of
inserts. For this reason the range of materials
that can be handled is very wide.
Different camera systems for all common
readings such as OMR, barcode
or Datamatrix can be used. It is also
possible to integrate addressing and
postage meter modules in the system.
The comprehensive automation is an
outstanding feature of the autoSET technology.
All settings are made at the ergonomically

job from the memory and the setting automation
sets up all relevant modules.

Bäuerle guarantees maximum transparency,
security and effi ciency when processing
documents. Moreover, MB inserting
systems can be extended by adding
further software modules such as monitoring
or fi le check.
Now it is personal – Innovation in
mailing production!
Studies have shown that colourful and
customised mailings with individual contents
are better at communicating the
signifi cance of advertised products and
consequently multiply response rates.
But the response behaviour does not only
depend on the contents of the mailing,
but also on its custommade
form. A cleverly made
mailing attracts attention. The proper
technology may cause a sensation, thus
ensuring the success of the mailing campaign.
With a technical development,
whose name will be made public at the
drupa, MB Bäuerle offers the ideal solution
for this purpose.
The new system allows the production
of an individual cover letter with matching
envelope in a single pass. Consequently
the target group-specifi c addressing of
mailings from print run one has become
a reality. Feeding takes place either by
means of a cut sheet pre-loader, continuously
from a roll or directly from a digital
printing system. A camera system
in connection with a diverter guarantees
permanent security during the entire production
cycle, making sure that only impeccable
documents reach the delivery
section. The complete system is also very
operator-friendly because of its compact
design and good accessibility.
In connection with the innovative possibilities
of digital printing, this new development
opens up new approaches in the
production of mailings. The individual design
of the envelope in agreement with its
contents results in maximising the advertising
message and consequently leads
to a signifi cantly higher response rate.

The system is also ideal for the combined
processing of transpromo documents. An
advertising supplement can, for example,
be added to an invoice, and then mailed
in an individually designed envelope.
For a perfect result after the (digital)
print – The in-line system for
creasing and folding allows effi cient
processing
A typical problem when folding digital
prints or other sensitive materials is the
cracking of the toner layer along the fold
line. The reason for this phenomenon is
not the folding process or the technology
that is used, but the physical properties
of surface and paper. Creasing along
the fold line can considerably reduce or
even completely avoid the cracking of the
toner layer. With the technology used in
the Pit Stop models, the material is gently
compressed because the extension of
the paper fi bres is avoided. This principle
prevents cracking of the printing ink or
tearing of the paper, thus ensuring a neat
fold.
The combination of the folding systems
from MB Bäuerle with the Pit Stop creasing
and perforating machines allows
an economical post-processing. At the
drupa, MB Bäuerle will for the fi rst time
present a completely automated inline
system for this type of applications.

As processing takes place in one pass,
the risk that sensitive material (e.g. digitally
printed products) is marked or scratched
is considerably reduced. Moreover,
it is not necessary to stack the sheets before
they are folded. The alignment of the
sheets before and after creasing results in
high precision for the end product.
It is also possible to integrate a timed
head module by means of a slitter shaft
mounted in front of the fold unit. In this
confi guration, creasing and perforation in
direction of paper travel is also possible.
Another advantage of the inline system is
the fl exibility for the user, because many
production possibilities are available. The
creasing and perforating machine can,
for example, also be operated as a standalone
system in connection with the fl at
pile feeder and the alignment track.
Tried-and-tested solutions complement
the novelties
Beside numerous novelties and world
premieres, Mathias Bäuerle GmbH will
also exhibit well-known solutions. One
example for this line of business is the
folding machine multimaster CAS 35.
Computer control replaces the otherwise
necessary manual skill. Operation
is very simple, set-up is extremely fast.
multimaster CAS 35 is the perfect folding
machines for in-house printing departments,
copy and lettershops as well as
digital printers. The fold unit is equipped
with two fold plates for the production of
all standard parallel folds.
Cross folds can also be made because
the bottom-feed, top-loading air feeder
also separates pre-folded sheets. There
is no need for fold roller setting. Special
polyurethane rollers make roller setting
superfl uous.

RESPONSIBLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTALLY
FRIENDLY BUSINESS PRACTICES ARE HIGHLY VALUED AT KALLFASS.
In the last few years the potential for
more sustainability in business operations
and processes has been consequently
calculated and partly realised with
high investment in environmentally friendly
solutions that conserve resources. We
know that sustainable production processes
are also incredibly important to our
customers. We have already been looking
into the use of bio-fi lms on our machines
for some time. We are testing biodegradable
and compostable types of fi lms as
well as biopolymer fi lms from sustainable
renewable resources.
There are two biocompatible aspects
regarding the sustainability of packaging
processes. On the one hand, we have
biodegradable packaging materials which
are composted under industrial conditions.
On the other hand, packaging materials
are made of renewable raw materials
like corn (starch) – a natural resource for
various bioplastics. Both categories are
called biocompatible and are considered
to be a sustainable strategy of packaging.
Some biopolymers fulfi ll both specifi ca-
tions and ensure particularly sustainable
packaging.
PLA fi lm is stiff and brittle. It is impossible
to ply or reverse the fi lm without visible
structural damages. The resulting
packaging appearance is not acceptable
and leads to limited distribution. Using the
common fi lm packaging lines, PLA fi lms
can be used only restrictively in high-performance
production lines. The aim was
to design a new fi lm packaging system for
biopolymer PLA-fi lms, which fi rst enables
a packaging result with an appealing look
and second reaches a speed suffi cient for
fully-automatic production processes. As
a result of this demanding development
work, Kallfass will launch the new SERVO
PACKER 500, a continuous fully-automatic
fi lm packaging line for fi lm overwrapping
with two fl at fi lm rolls, which achieves
the required capacity for fully-automatic
industrial production using biopolymer
fi lms.
This machine is able to process commercial
PLA-fi lms fully-automatically due
to the constructive characteristics.

Optimised solvent
processing concept for
packaging printing
OFRU RECYCLING FROM BABENHAUSEN IS OPTIMISING ITS
PRODUCT RANGE IN PREPARATION FOR THE DRUPA 2012.
The main focus is on the ASC-
150 recovery plant with 24 kW
heating capacity. The ASC-150 solvent
recovery plant is the smallest model in
the professional ASC series which has
an integrated steam heating system.
The steam heater in the double jacket of
the distillation vessel was developed by
OFRU as long ago as 1997, and replaces
the conventional thermal oil heating
system for solvent recovery plants. The
optimisation of the ASC-150 for fl exo printing
shops drew on the experience and
wishes of the customers. Packaging and
fl exo printing shops wish to integrate the
solvent recovery directly into the automatic
washing process of a modern printing
press on the one hand and to incorporate
older printing presses into the recovery
process on the other.
At the DRUPA 2012, OFRU will therefore
be presenting a solvent recovery concept
linked to an ASC-150, two stainless steel
solvent tanks with UN and DOT approval
(approved in particular for hazardous
liquid substances of classes 3, 4.2, 4.3,
5.1, 6.1, 8 and 9). The two tanks can be
connected online to a printing press and
ensure continuous processing of the solvents.
In addition, a solvent fi lling and discharge
station has been integrated. At
the push of a button, the printer can also
transfer the soiled solvent from a drum
into the tank, or pump clean solvent from
the second tank when necessary for manual
washing processes. This solution is
particularly practical, as many printing
shops still employ older printing presses
and have not yet changed over to printing
presses offering an automatic washing
process.
Experience has shown that the distillation
capacity of this plant is suffi cient for 30
to 65 litres per hour with a heating temperature
of only 100-110°C. The low heating
temperature is necessary to ensure safety
during the distillation of nitrocellulosebased
solvents. The processing concept
presented already forms part of the OFRU
product range for 2012.

For large label, print, photo and poster

Craquelure Coating is a water based acrylic
coating that is applied onto photographs,
lithographic prints, posters and
canvas art décor. The coating provides
protection – eliminating the need for glass
- and the enhanced look of a hand painted
artwork. It is applied with a brush or
paint roller in seconds and is available in
matte and hi gloss fi nishes.
