Dear Friends,
This is my “letter of introduction” as Temporary
Administrator of the Church of St. Frances de Chantal,
to cover for Father Greg on his sabbatical leave. On
January 17 I received a letter from Bishop Murphy
appointing me to the post, effective February 1, 2012
until April 30, 2012, “in accordance with canons 539
and 540.”
With careful planning led by Father Greg, the pastoral
and administrative staff here have come up with a
plan whereby I can discharge my responsibilities as
Temporary Administrator with minimal adjustment
in the ongoing schedules and programs which will
remain in the hands of the staff persons presently
!"#$#!%&'(')*++',!+-'./0'$"%'1++'*"'),!2!3!2'"!!%!%&
All of these arrangements are done with the hope
that Father Greg’s sabbatical in Rome will be fruitful
and restful. The program upon which he will embark
contains a very interesting component of theological
updating, and this, in turn, promises an enrichment of
ministry when he returns. Bon voyage, Greg!
As I write this letter to you, we are marking the
middle of winter. You may recall that, last year, we
were so relieved to see that we were halfway through
the snowy season. This year, it seems that winter has
hardly begun. The mid­point of winter is marked on
the Church liturgical calendar by the Feast of the
Presentation of the Lord, February 2, in which the
child Jesus is brought to the temple (following the
directions given in Exodus 13:2) and is recognized
from the Pastor
there by the prophet Simeon, who took the
child in his arms and praised God “for my
eyes have seen your salvation …a light for
revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for
your people Israel” (Lk 2:32).
The Presentation is in the Christmas cycle of feasts, a feast
.4'+*#,05'100*"#+6'.78!23!%'$8'0,!').2+%'!9!2#!8'42.9'0,!'
dark of winter. On this day candles for the church and
altar are blessed, so it gets its name Candlemas Day. And
from this, in a playful way, Groundhog Day, also noting
shadow and light.
The metaphor of light points to the relationship between
Jesus and the Father: “God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God” (Nicene Creed); to the incarnate
Word: “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was
coming into the world” (Jn 1:9); and the call to live the
Christian life: “Live as children of the light, for light
produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and
truth” (Ephesians 5:8).
So, as we welcome the increased light of the second half
of the winter season, let us permit that light to remind us
of the deepest mysteries of our faith.

THE CHURCH IN NEED COLLECTION
On February 5 th a collection will be taken for “The Church in
Need.” The monies collected at this time will be shared among
three areas of the world where there is particular need for help:
