Upper Extremity Blocks
Blocks of the upper extremity are typically used for procedures involving the:
Shoulder
Arm
Elbow
Wrist
Hand
According to a recent study 1 , continuous peripheral nerve
blocks of the upper extremities provided better control of
post-operative pain, reduced oral opioid requirements and
patient sleep disturbances were minimal. Post-op
range-of-motion consistently reached or exceeded the
surgeon’s expectations, and patient satisfaction was high.
Lower Extremity Blocks
Blocks of the lower extremity are typically used for procedures
involving the:
Hip
Knee
Ankle
Foot
Current study data 2 supports that peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) may
offer advantages over general anesthesia (GA) in outpatients having knee
arthroscopy. Patients who received PNBs had less postoperative pain and
nausea in the immediate postoperative period and were able to ambulate,
eat, drink, and meet home readiness criteria earlier than patients who
received GA.
