ANNUAL APPEAL For over 50 years, the Academy Art Museum has been committed to enhancing cultural life for all on the Mid-Shore through outstanding exhibitions and a broad array of programs. To that end, a key strategy is to offer classes, concerts, trips, lectures, outreach programs, and exhibitions at a reasonable cost (or no cost at all! ) even when the expenses escalate. At the same time, the Museum’s trustees and staff maintain a longstanding track record of operating with a balanced budget and no debt. Since program revenues and other earned income can’t cover overall expenses, the Museum must seek additional funding to bridge the gap and achieve the next level of excellence. Here’s how it breaks down for FY 2012. While overall expenses are projected at $1,160,000, program revenues and other earned income will bring in $410,000 (or 35%) of the total amount needed. The remaining $750,000 must be raised from different sources of contributed income. When you renew your membership or participate in special events like the fall Craft Show and spring Paint the Town fundraiser, your financial support helps boost contributed income. Other key components include corporate, foundation, and government grants. This year, the Museum has set an ambitious goal to raise $265,000 for the Annual Appeal. Early responses have been strong, and we are increasingly optimistic that the goal is within reach. F ROM THE CHAIRMAN I couldn't be more excited about the future of the Museum. We begin our 2011-12 fiscal year in a strong financial position, despite a soft economy. We have no debt, which enables us to focus upon accomplishing our mission rather than payments of principal and interest, and we will operate under a balanced budget in the coming year. Bravo! We have a very capable and engaged Board which is generous in its support of the institution, and a first rate Director with a year of experience under his belt, who is well known and respected in the community. And, to complete our staff, we have added two professionals-Beth Jones, Director of Development, a long-term area resident who hit the ground running and is already making a big difference; and Anke Van Wagenberg, Curator, a true professional who brings a lifetime of experience in the arts into our midst. So we have a strong foundation upon which to build, and build we will! New Board Members Bring Diverse Talents The five new board members, recently appointed to the Museum’s Board of Trustees, bring diverse talents to the board’s membership. Warren Cox of Church Hill and Washington, DC, is Senior Partner Emeritus at Hartman-Cox Architects, a firm he co-founded and where he managed such projects as the recent renovation of the Hay-Adams Hotel, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Winterthur Museum. His firm has received numerous prestigious awards and Warren himself received the Centennial Medal for Service to the Profession by the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of the AIA. Robin Clarke of Easton is a returning board member after serving on the board from 2004 – 2010. She hails from Chicago and has been a long-time advocate for the arts, having served on the boards of both the Lyric Opera and Art Institute of Chicago, as well as launching the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in Indiana. Jeff Staley of Bozman is retired, having most recently served as a principal with Mercer Management Consulting, an international management consulting firm. His passions since retirement, however, keep him busy racing cars and sailboats, and playing music as a percussionist. Nancy Appleby of Bozman and McLean, VA, is retired Special Counsel to America Online. Since retirement, Nancy has volunteered in the independent school arena. She is currently on the Board at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens. Dirck Bartlett of Easton is director of business development at Ilex Construction & Development, a family-owned construction and woodworking This issue of the Academy describes a plethora of exhibitions, educational programs and entertainment truly remarkable for a community of Easton's size. That all this can be done with a fulltime staff of just six persons is amazing! But, with your support, we can do more, and we will. The Academy Board is in the final stages of preparing a strategic plan to govern the next three to five years which we believe will take the Academy to the next level. Among other things, the plan will propose a significant expansion of our arts education program, particularly for area students. We look forward to sharing its contents with you early in 2012. Stay tuned! In sum, the Academy is in very good shape and we are well positioned to make it an even greater contributor to the cultural health of the community in the future. With your continued support we can make it happen!
