Andrea Anhalt, 100 Great Iowa
Nurses awardee
Making Teamwork Better
Two of Waverly Health Center’s nurses
recently shared facts about a project to
improve coordination of patient care.
Connie Koehler, BSN, RN-BC, medicalsurgical
nurse manager, and Cathy Wilson-
Sands, MSN, RN-BC, associate director
of nursing practice, were part of a poster
session at the Iowa Organization of Nurse
Leaders (IONL) meeting in June.
The project started with a wish to make
sure all members of a patient’s care team
know the goals and needs of the patient.
Each week, staff members including nurses,
dieticians, therapists, social workers,
pharmacists, and others gather around a
large wall display. The meeting is led by
a nurse called a case manager. During the
meeting, the members share information
Staff gather to discuss patient needs
Devoted to Patient-Centered Care
As a bedside nurse, Andrea Anhalt, BSN,
RN-BC, is a great example of nursing
excellence at Waverly Health Center
(WHC). She has been a part of the medicalsurgical
team for more than six years.
Andrea was chosen as WHC’s 2011
Excellence in Nursing Award winner and
was recently selected as a 100 Great Iowa
Nurse.
One of Andrea’s nominators wrote,
“Through her role as a bedside nurse,
charge nurse, preceptor, and council
member she keeps the patient at the center
of her work. She is an advocate for patients
and their families. Andrea is dependable
and can be counted on to support her team
and meet the needs of our patients.”
Connecting with patients is simple for
Andrea. “I enjoy making patients happy
and healthy on many levels through
patient-centered care. I feel that everything
I do is focused on giving better care to each
of my patients. We always work to provide
up-to-date and evidenced-based care.”
and updates about the patients who are on
the medical-surgical unit. They talk about
goals for the patient and everyone has a
chance to add notes or ask questions.
One of the group members commented,
“The team is all together, we are all hearing
the same information, and can discuss
and problem-solve.” One more group
member shared, “The meetings are a team
approach to patient care — every discipline
is important.”
The staff members who are a part of the
meetings were asked to rate the new
process. All of the members agreed or
strongly agreed that the process was a
helpful way to give and get information.
They also shared that the plan of care for
patients has improved. Our staff members
Cathy Wilson-Sands, associate director
of nursing practice, and Connie Koehler,
medical-surgical nurse manager, during
the IONL poster session
Summer 2012
Volume 10 – Issue 3
Andrea focuses on more than just the
health needs of her patients. “I try to focus
not only the daily tasks needed to take care
of patients, but also things that will make
their care specific to them and support their
best health status. Some of the ‘little things’
often make a big difference.”
Another one of Andrea’s nominators
stated, “Andrea’s greatest contribution
to nursing is her commitment to patientcentered
care. She is the nurse you would
want taking care of you or a loved one.
She works with the whole health care team
to meet the patient’s needs. As a bedside
nurse, Andrea is a coach and role model to
others.”
Providing patient-centered care is the
cornerstone and mission of Waverly Health
Center. WHC has two of the newest 100
Great Iowa Nurses in Anhalt and Randy
Wirtz, ARNP-BC, nurse practitioner in
Nashua Clinic and Walk-In Clinic. Since the
100 Great Iowa Nurses recognition began
in 2005, ten nurses from WHC have been
chosen for the honor.
are not the only ones who like the new
process. Since the meetings started, patient
satisfaction scores for how well staff work
together have steadily increased.
Music as Medicine
Most people think of music as a form of
entertainment, but for more and more
patients at WHC, music is playing a role
in their healing process. Music therapy is a
free service offered in the medical-surgical
unit, emergency department, outpatient
surgery and birthing center.
What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is the clinical use of music
to produce desired changes in a person.
People of all ages, cultures and diagnoses
can relate to music. Research has shown
that music therapy can provide many
benefits, such as reduced stress, lowered
pain perception, elevated mood and
increased social interaction.
Music therapy can provide patients with
a sense of control they might not find
Retaining Wall Construction
in other ways. Patients have the chance
to be part of a unique music experience.
Examples include learning to relax, writing
songs, music and movement, and dealing
with the emotions of their stay.
How Does Music Therapy Help
Patients?
Kara Rewerts, a Wartburg College
graduate, is WHC’s board-certified
music therapist. A music therapist plans
treatment goals tailored to each patient’s
needs. You don’t have to have musical
skills to take part. Music therapists are
trained to help patients achieve success in
their own way.
“Nobody wants to go to a hospital. We
want to help make a patient’s time here as
positive as it can be,” stated Kara. “With
many patients, music sparks old memories
and gets family members talking about
happy times. Before long, the whole family
is laughing and for a moment, they might
even forget they are in a hospital.”
Music has been shown to improve the
effectiveness of other therapies. Since music
and speech therapy share many of the same
qualities, a music therapist and a speech
therapist can work together to help patients
work toward their speech goals.
Music can also be helpful in a physical
therapy setting. It can serve as a fun,
driving force that can push patients to
reach their physical movement goals.
“One of the best parts of my job is seeing
someone’s face light up when you involve
them in a meaningful music experience,”
stated Kara. “The patients give me so many
wonderful gifts in return, without even
knowing it.”
In late August, workers will be replacing
a retaining wall on the north side of the
WHC campus. They will be tearing down
the current retaining wall and part of the
orange lot to give the parking lot more
support.
The north driveway to the red parking lot
will be closed during construction. The
orange and Christophel Clinic entrances
will remain open during this project.
Parking in the orange lot will be slightly
reduced, but will be available.
The project is expected to be done this fall.
Roger and Judy Rasmussen didn’t know
where to turn next. Judy had been very ill.
She was admitted to several hospitals, at
last coming back to Waverly Health Center.
Her family doctor, Lee Fagre, MD, knew
something was seriously wrong. He called
Dr. Matthew Deppe, Waverly Health
Center’s newest general surgeon, to look at
Judy.
Dr. Deppe found that Judy had a very bad
disease in her pancreas. The pancreas is a
gland near the stomach that helps process
foods. Judy had very little chance of living
through the standard surgery used to treat
her disease.
“Dr. Deppe helped us learn about the
options to treat my illness. They weren’t
very good,” stated Judy. “I could have
surgery and most likely die from it or I
could be given drugs to help with the pain
until the end. We didn’t like either option.”
Dr. Deppe didn’t like the choices either. He
contacted a doctor he knew from the Mayo
Clinic to discuss a new procedure that was
being used for Judy’s condition. The new
method was showing great promise and a
much higher survival rate than methods
used in the past. There was hope!
“Our top goal was to get Judy as healthy
as possible so she could have the new
surgery,” stated Dr. Deppe. “We used
antibiotics to help shrink her infection. We
also worked to increase her strength with
better nutrition through IV feedings.”
A Difference You Can Feel...a feeling you can see.
Roger and Judy Rasmussen with
Dr. L. Matthew Deppe
Dr. Deppe worked very closely with
Dr. Fagre, registered dietitian Wahneta
Haywood, and the nursing staff. “The
doctors and staff worked with us as a team
– we all had faith in each other,” stated
Judy.
Several weeks went by and the big news
came. Judy’s illness had improved so
much, she no longer needed surgery. She
was being released to go home!
“Our health care team was very surprised.
It is very rare for a patient with this disease
to recover without surgery. In fact, we are
not aware of any other cases,” stated Dr.
Deppe.
Judy ended, “Needless to say, Roger
and I will be eternally grateful for the
Dr. Deppe Receives Award
Dr. L. Matthew Deppe has been chosen
for the Carol and Tom R. DeMeester
Traveling Fellowship for Surgeons. This
special award is given to one surgeon
a year by the Society for Surgery of the
Alimentary Tract.
As a part of the fellowship, Dr. Deppe
will work with experts at the Cleveland
Clinic and the Ohio State University
for several weeks. His training will
focus on Endoscopic Retrograde
Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
technology. ERCP is a procedure that
combines upper gastrointestinal (GI)
endoscopy (looking inside the body
with a small camera) and x-rays to treat
problems of the bile and pancreatic
ducts.
“It is an honor for me to receive this
award,” stated Dr. Deppe. “I have a
very strong interest in GI issues and
this training will allow me to help more
patients maintain a better quality of
life.”
When his fellowship is over, Dr.
Deppe will share his experience with
the Society’s leadership at its annual
business meeting in May, 2013.
Things to keep in mind…
• Always see a doctor before starting
a new fitness program
• Ease into a new fitness routine
• Wear loose-fitting clothing and
comfortable shoes
• Pick programs that are fun for you
Dining Room Cashier
At WHC, the nutrition services staff
is responsible for preparing and
serving meals in the dining room, for
all patients and any special events
in the hospital. Volunteers serve as
cashiers in the dining room. If you
enjoy a fast-paced environment and
getting to know a variety of people,
then this may be a great match for
you. Volunteers work weekdays
from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and
need to be comfortable running an
adding machine and handling money.
Substitutes are currently needed.
Nutrition Services Aides
WHC does not use styrofoam food
containers to be more environmentally
friendly. All food is served on china
plates. For dishes taken out of the
dining room, there are drop-off areas
around the hospital. Volunteers are
needed to pick up dishes from these
dish drop-off locations and return
them to the kitchen. Openings on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 1 to 3
p.m.
Specialty Clinic Volunteers
WHC works with area specialists to
provide clinics that are convenient to
residents in the Waverly area. Many
of these physicians request volunteers
to assist their staff with check-in,
paperwork and escorting patients to
other departments as needed. The
days and hours for these positions
vary based on the clinic schedule, but
are usually 2 to 4 days a month for
2 to 4 hours. Volunteers should be
welcoming, enjoy assisting patients
and interested in helping WHC
continue to offer this service to our
community. Substitutes are needed for a
variety of days.
Gift Garden
Our Gift Garden is a beautiful gift shop
managed, maintained and staffed all by
volunteers. The Gift Garden is the main
fundraiser for the WHC Auxiliary.
Volunteers should have a warm and
welcoming attitude and a desire to
help customers find the perfect item
for their needs. Volunteers can work
a set schedule or fill in open shifts
from month to month. Gift Garden
volunteers receive a 10% discount on
the days they volunteer!
