Isaac Meier Homestead
The original house was built by
Valentine Herchelroth (Hergelrode)
in the 1740-1750 period. Isaac
Meier, son-in-law of Herchelroth,
purchased the house and its surrounding
plantation by 1757. Meier
laid out lots for a town in 1768,
which is now known as Myerstown
in Eastern Lebanon County.
The house is of prime example
for understanding the history and
development of material culture in 18th century Pennsylvania. The eastern part of
the house remains Germanic in detail, but the western half is composed of parlors,
bedrooms and a central hall, all of which exhibit an English Georgian influence
inspired by Palladian architecture. The Meier Homestead is being preserved for appreciation
of local heritage and as an architectural laboratory for students of all ages.
Open houses are held monthly from April through October, with an annual country
fair pm the last Saturday in September. Kerzenlilicht Nacht (Candlelight Night) is
an open house held on the last Saturday in November following Myerstown’s holiday
tree-lighting ceremony. For additional information, or to schedule a tour, call
Fort Zeller
10 N. Fort Zeller Road
Newmanstown, PA 17073
Eugene Hoffman
717.272.0662
www.fortzeller.com
Zeller's Fort is a
National Landmark and
one of the few and rare
remaining examples of
Germanic Architecture in
the Western Hemisphere
and is also Pennsylvania's
oldest existing fort.
Pioneers who came to the Tulpehocken from the Schoharie valley built it in 1723 and
rebuilt it in 1745. It was used as a place of refuge during Indian Wars.
Legend states that while Christine Zeller was home alone one day, she saw three
Indians approaching the Fort and heading for a small opening in the cellar. She quickly
fled to the cellar and stationed herself at this window with an uplifted ax. As the
head of the first Indian protruded through the hole, she quickly brought down the ax
with an effective blow. Dragging the body into the cellar, she waited for the next
Indian to follow. She did the same to all three Indians defending herself and the Fort
through courage and quick thinking. Information obtained from: REPORT OF THE
COMMISSION TO LOCATE THE SITE OF THE FRONTIER FORTS OF PENN-
SYLVANIA. Volume One.
Fort Zeller is a long-standing landmark of Lebanon County and a symbol for the
families that can trace their roots back to when their ancestors first arrived in this
country. Over time, the farm on which the Fort stands has been in and out of the
Zeller Family. Most recently, Alvin Zeller had purchased the farm bringing it back to
his family who can trace back his linage back to the original builders.
Eugene Hoffman married Sylvia Zeller who together continue to maintain the
property as a showcase for all to see. People continue to come from all over the world
and all walks of life to marvel at the well-maintained property.
Gene and Sylvia enjoy sharing their love of the history and knowledge of the area
with all who visit and encourage people to call them to arrange for a tour. ■
Amish
There are many different sects of
Amish, Brethren and Mennonite who
make Lebanon County their home.
While traditions may vary from
sect to sect, all are deeply rooted in
their faith, family and farming. The
Amish trace their heritage back hundreds
of years, and for all the changes
that have occurred, they preserve their
beliefs and forego many of today’s modern conveniences.
The Amish live by their faith, still farming the land as their forefathers did - with
horse power. Their simple way of life is evident by the plain clothing styles, which
has earned them the name “Plain People”. It is the simple, peaceful life-style of these
plain people that attracts such a curiosity today. Take a self-guided tour of Scenic
Byway Route 419 and Route 501 to see rolling farm lands, one-room schoolhouses,
roadside stands and active farming communities. Take note of the pride of Amish
craftsmanship. From beautiful woodworking furniture, to wrought iron work and
colorful quilts, the skill and care that goes into each piece is evident as you visit
shops throughout the county. ■
Cornwall Iron Furnace
94 Rexmont Road
Cornwall, PA 17016
(717) 272-9711
This quiet cluster of beautiful buildings nestled in the rolling hills of Lebanon
County was once the home of a fire-breathing blast furnace with an insatiable appetite
for rocks and wood! Each picturesque structure at the Cornwall Iron Furnace site
played its part in the noisy infancy of the metals industry in America.
The charcoal, cold blast iron furnace at Cornwall operated continuously from 1742
to 1883 under the ownership of the Peter Grubb family and later Robert Coleman and
his descendants, and was typical of the furnaces in those days. But Cornwall Iron
Furnace is also quite unique in that it is the only known surviving furnace of its kind
in the Western Hemisphere.
The five-acre site includes remnants of the original eighteenth-century industry
incorporated into the nineteenth century Furnace Building, Wagon Master and
Blacksmith Shop buildings, Abattoir, and Charcoal Barn now refitted as a Visitor
Center. In close proximity but not part of the site are the Ironmaster’s Mansion, several
workers villages, and the Cornwall Iron Ore Mine that today is filled with water.
The site is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
and is a National Historic Landmark as well as a Landmark of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers. (Article by Stephen Somers)
Cornwall Iron Furnace is located on Rexmont Road at Boyd Street in Cornwall.
Hours of operation are 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Thursday through Saturday, noon to
Light’s Fort
11th & Maple Sts., Lebanon, PA 17046
717.270.0853
The Johannes Licht house, known as
Light’s Fort is located on the corner of
11th and Maple Streets in Lebanon.
Being built in 1742, it is the oldest
house in Lebanon. The building, when
first erected, was a large 30 ft. by 40 ft.
two-story limestone dwelling around
which was built a large stockade. The
house had two-foot walls, a hip roof,
and an arched cellar; at one time a
spring ran through the basement.
Tradition and legend has it that
there were tunnels under the house and
it was used as a worship meeting place
for the Mennonites in the area. It is also
believed to have housed 60 families during
the French and Indian War raids.
Although it has gone through many
changes and had been a private residence
for a period of time, it is the oldest
standing structure in Lebanon today.
The Friends of Light’s Fort in conjunction
with the Lebanon Historic
Preservation Trust is actively trying to
restore the fort. They offer open houses
in the spring and fall. Colonial items are
sold at the open houses, tours of the
vaulted basement are given, and guides
tell some of the history of the building.
Lick Monument
James Lick, born August 25, 1796 in
Stumpsdown (now Fredericksburg) was
an American entrepreneur who traveled
the Americas in search of his dreams,
gold and wealth. He began his career as
a carpenter, and later became a piano
builder, land baron, and patron of the
sciences.
At the time of his death, he was the
wealthiest man in California, and left
the majority of his estate to social and
scientific causes.
Perhaps his greatest contribution
was $700,000 donated to the University
of California for the construction of an
observatory that housed the most powerful
telescope in existence.
A monument located in the
Fredericksburg Cemetery has been
erected in honor of James Lick. ■
Bicycling in Lebanon County
It doesn't matter if your bicycling preference is road riding, mountain biking, or
riding on trails because Lebanon County has it all.
Touring road bicyclists ride through farmland on quiet roads and may share these
roads with Amish buggies. Cyclists can visit historic sites such as Cornwall Furnace,
the Union Canal and architectural gems in the small towns and the city of Lebanon.
The Lebanon County Scenic Bike Rides Map is available through the Tourism
Promotion Agency, and detailed descriptions and maps for the 10 rides are available at
www.bikelebanon.org
Mountain bikers can test their skills on single track trails at Swatara State Park,
Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick, and designated trails on
Pennsylvania Game Lands.
Bicyclists who enjoy “rail to trails” have two very different choices - the Lebanon
Valley Rail Trail and Stony Valley Rail Trail. The Lebanon Valley Rail Trail extends
from Lebanon to Lancaster County’s Conewago Recreation Trail. Maps and trailhead
access points are available at www.lvrt.com. The 20 mile Stony Valley Rail Trail passes
through Pennsylvania Game Lands and parallels Stony Creek, one of Pennsylvania’s
Wild and Scenic Streams. Both trails are shown on the Lebanon County Scenic Bike
Rides map.In late Summer, Swatara State Park will open many miles of bike trails
including a ten mile loop. ■
Annville Historic District
Route 422, Annville, PA 17003
In 1979 the Annville Historic District was accepted on the National Register of
Historic Places as an excellent example of linear communities that developed along
early roads and waterways. Annville features a variety of architectural styles prevalent
in Central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.
“Collectively, the buildings present an outstanding picture of the settlement and
growth of the small town from the primitive log cabins to the Georgian stone houses and
taverns, to the standard frame workers' houses to the imposing Victorian mansions of the
19th century industrialists,” original nomination document.
Annville was formed by a small settlement of Scotch-Irish squatters in the early
1700’s. Several hotels were constructed along Main Street to service travelers along the
old Allegheny Indian Trail, a footpath that extended from Allegheny Street in
Philadelphia to Harris Ferry (which later became Harrisburg) and westward across the
mountains.
The mid-19th century saw the development
of large limestone quarries west and
north of town. The coming of the railroad
1860 led to the building of factories for the
manufacture of shirts, handkerchiefs and
shoes. The new industrialists built their
Victorian mansions, adding to the historic
beauty of the East End of town. ■
