Mount Desert Island Hospital is
where my family and I receive care,
and where I serve as Chair of the
Board of Trustees. This really is
“my Hospital.”
As you’ll read in this report, many
people can make that claim, for a
lot of different reasons. Everyday
the Hospital helps people regain
and improve their health. It
provides professional opportunity
and job fulfillment. The Hospital
offers people a variety of ways to
serve and support their community.
MDI Hospital also provides
access to care that keeps families
healthy and prevents illness from
taking lives too soon.
This report provides only a small
sample of the ways people connect
to and benefit from their Hospital.
MDI Hospital and others like it are
also the only source of primary
care that keeps chronic disease at
bay. The Hospital provides millions
of dollars each year in free and uncompensated
care, and subsidizes
health services that help keep our
friends and neighbors fit and healthy.
I’m grateful that MDI Hospital
is here for my family and my
community. And, like the people
featured in this report, I’m proud
to say this is my Hospital.

For the Reverend Gary DeLong,
Executive Director of the Maine
Seacoast Mission, wellbeing and
physical fitness go hand in hand.
So after DeLong, an active man in
his 60s, suffered a heart attack last
December playing platform tennis,
his rehabilitation at MDI Hospital
helped heal both his heart and mind.
Following a stay at a Bangor hospital,
DeLong returned to MDI grateful
that he could rehabilitate close to
home. “It’s a comfort to have a hospital
with that level of competence
nearby,” he said.
Cardiac rehab nurses Carol Zdziarski,
RN and Sarah McEachern, RN
worked closely with DeLong,
monitoring, guiding and encouraging
him. “They were good about
pushing you in a way that made you
comfortable. It helped me move
beyond the feeling that my body
had let me down and quickly build
self-confidence.”
He also valued the attentive, compassionate
care he received. “There
was a tremendous sense of small
town caring. It’s a real sense of
one-to-one personal attention.
That’s invaluable,” said DeLong.
DeLong has graduated from cardiac
rehab and returned to the tennis
court. “I’m playing as if I never left
it,” he said. “To be able to maintain
a physically active lifestyle means the
world to me.”

Martha Abbott of Bar Harbor gets
no greater joy than spending time
with her granddaughter Lauren.
“We sing and play in the yard. The
time we spend is very important,”
said Abbott.
After a breast cancer diagnosis in
July 2008, Abbott feared losing
these precious moments. “I thought,
will I be alive to see her at three
years old?” But today, thanks to the
Hospital’s Breast Center, Abbott
looks forward to many years
sharing memories with Lauren.
Abbott believes that the Breast
Center’s new digital mammography
unit made it possible to detect the
cancer early enough to treat. “I
really think it made a difference,”
said Abbott.
Within days, Abbott had a biopsy
and a lumpectomy, followed by
treatment in Bangor. While the
speed and expertise of care was
impressive, it was the compassionate
care of nurse Betty Mitchel, RN
and the others at the Breast Center
that touched her.
“Betty was right by my side. I
wouldn’t have gotten through it
without her support,” said Abbott.
“It meant the world to me.”
Today Abbott sees a bright, cancerfree
future, and she plans on spending
as much of it as possible with
Lauren. “I wasn’t going to have that
taken from me.”

Bar Harbor Optometrist Roger
Brignull and his stepson Jon
Nicholson share a family bond,
and a family doctor, Brian Caine,
M.D. Each appreciates having a
close friend nearby who provides
skilled, compassionate care for
them and their loved ones.
Both are grateful for the ease of
access to their family doctor. “It’s
reassuring that we can get rapid
attention,” said Dr. Brignull. “We
see Brian for everything, from bug
bites to colds,” added Nicholson.
“When my kids are sick, I can get
them in right away. It’s an absolute
benefit to have access to that kind
of care.”
Nicholson is comforted that Dr.
Caine also sees his children Kyle
and Robin. “It is beneficial that
Brian knows my issues so he can
take preventive measures for my
kids at an early age,” he said.
They both value the personal relationship
they have with Dr. Caine.
“He’s a good friend,” said Dr.
Brignull. “Because Brian and I
know each other so well, he has a
better understanding of me.There’s
a level of care that wouldn’t be there
if we didn’t have such a longstanding
relationship.”
“There’s a small-town familiarity,”
added Nicholson. “He’s part of
the family,”

Dr.Michael Heniser,DO, is motivated
by a desire to make meaningful
connections with people. His job as
a family medicine and obstetrics
provider at the Community Health
Center gives him ample opportunity
to fulfill this mission. “Medicine
allows me to make a difference,”
said Dr. Heniser.
Dr. Heniser practices family medicine
because of his diverse interests. “I
want to help people in as many ways
as possible,” he said. Practicing
obstetrics, he explained, allows him
to be part of one of life’s most deeply
moving and meaningful moments.
“When you lay that baby on mom’s
chest for the first time, it is a natural
high. At that moment, there’s no
better place to be.”
In 2007 Dr. Heniser and his wife
Becky, who teaches the third grade,
chose to live and work on Mount
Desert Island because both the Hospital
and the Island were an ideal fit.
“This place offers a perfect balance
between professional pursuits and
lifestyle,” he said.
For Dr. Heniser, whether caring for
a neighbor or delivering a baby, the
connections he makes with his
patients and with his community give
his job special meaning. “Everybody
has a passion, and making a difference
in people’s health is what drives me.”

For Lily Sweeney, RN, an ICU nurse
at MDI Hospital, working at a small
hospital has provided big opportunities.
Coming from a large Washington,
D.C. hospital in 1992, Sweeney
thought her move to MDI would
limit her professional opportunities.
“When I came here, I didn’t know
if my skills would grow or expand,”
said Sweeney. “But I’ve been able
to do things here that I would
never have had a chance to do at
a larger facility.
“We’re a small Hospital so we have
to be diverse,” said Sweeney. “I’ve
worked in different areas of the
hospital like the ER and OB units.
It has expanded my career.”
She has not only been able to care
for a variety of patients, she has
also participated at a more in depth
level than she might have at a bigger
hospital. “You’re a part of the plan
of care for patients here,” she
explained. “You’re making better
use of your skills.”
The uniquely caring atmosphere
has made working at MDI Hospital
a labor of love for Sweeney. “If you
really have a calling to care for
people, you want to work someplace
that has a heart. That’s MDI
Hospital.”

Serving on MDI Hospital’s Board
of Trustees is a way that Michael
Bonsey, Senior Vice President at
Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, connects
to the community. “As a banker
and as a family man, I look for
ways to connect with and support
my community,” said Bonsey.
“The hospital’s Board helps me
do that.”
Bonsey explained that the Hospital’s
Board is part of the tapestry
of the community. “I look around
the table at Board meetings and
see doctors, people who understand
the history and culture of
the community, members of the
legal and business community
all helping the Hospital keep
pace with the needs of our
friends and neighbors.”
This array of community
members helps MDI Hospital’s
Board balance its need for financial
stewardship with its caring
mission. “The Hospital has many
responsibilities. Having a diverse,
representative Board makes that
possible,” said Bonsey.
A board comprised of people
who live and work on the Island
also ensures that MDI Hospital
maintain its uniquely personal
connection to the communities
it serves. “A local board ensures
a level of intimacy and personal
care that you don’t get when a
board is removed from the
community it serves.”

Gail Marshall of Somesville believes
that healthy hospitals are essential
to the quality of life in a community.
She also feels strongly that to
thrive, hospitals need the active
support of the communities they
serve. "As citizens, we have a
responsibility to be a positive
contributor," said Marshall.
A lawyer by training, Marshall
supports MDI Hospital through
legislative advocacy. "MDI Hospital's
ability to provide us high quality
health care is directly affected by
the policies that are adopted in
Augusta and Washington," Marshall
said. "In those venues, endlessly
competing interests are at work. If
we don't advocate for our Hospital,
it's not likely anyone else will do it
for us."
Marshall believes in supporting
MDI Hospital not simply because
it is there, but because it is exceptional.
"We're way above average
and we need to cherish that. I
can't imagine a community of this
type can maintain and advance a
high quality of life without quality
health care services," said Marshall.
Having supported several of the
Hospital's successful efforts to
confront legislation that would
limit access to care, she encourages
others to take action. "You
really can have an impact on
what happens."

To Bar Harbor residents Don and
Joan Allen, donating to their Hospital
is like sowing the seeds of a healthy
community. “It’s a great thing for
the Island,” said Don. “And as we’ve
gotten older, we’ve made more
frequent use of the Hospital. It’s a
Godsend to us,” said Don.
The former owners of Don’s
Shop n Save believe in supporting
the community that gave them so
much. “I made my living from the
people on this Island. I feel it’s my
duty to give back,” said Don.
The Allens feel that by donating
to the Hospital, they contribute
to their friends and neighbors.
“It’s good for the community to
have this Hospital, and we want
to help, ” said Joan.
Joan is particularly appreciative of
MDI Hospital’s uniquely personal
approach to care. “I like the warmth
of a smaller institution,” said Joan.
“I can’t say enough about it.”
Today, Don spends much of his
time maintaining the couple’s
flawless lawn and gardens; rigorous
work that recently resulted
in shoulder problems that slowed
him down. However, thanks to
care provided by MDI Hospital
Don continues to plant seeds and
watch them grow – at home and
in the community.

Capital Campaign Donors
In early summer 2008, Mount Desert
Island Hospital embarked upon three
Capital Campaigns: one to help build
our new Community Health Center in
Southwest Harbor; the second to establish
an endowment for the Straus Center,
our Adult Day Center for seniors dealing
with memory loss; and lastly, a third
campaign to raise funds for the purchase
and installation of a new 64-Slice CT
Scanner. The following is a list of those

“Caring for Kids” Employee Campaign
Mount Desert Island Hospital’s “Caring for Kids” Employee Campaign kicked off in
the summer of 2008. Funds raised from this campaign are being used to purchase
two pediatric crash carts for the Emergency Department and Med/Surg. Education
and training specific to emergent pediatric situations are also being provided for
