A message from the Chairperson:
Blandina Nkutha
The Johannesburg Branch has had a very successful year. We improved the representation
of the different radiography modalities in this year’s committee. The dedication and hard
work of SORSA committee of 2012 has reflected in the bearing of fruit at the Johannesburg
Branch.
This year we have managed to host two incredibly successful seminars. The one held in
June was a general seminar covering different topics on radiography. The Breast Cancer
Awareness Seminar was held in October to commemorate Breast Cancer Month. This
seminar was a great success attended by many colleagues and special guests, and to this
day I believe that everyone who attended still takes back many of the lessons learnt on
breast awareness in radiography. We hope to host this seminar on a yearly basis.
There are many challenges that face the radiography profession and a few are listed below:
• The quality and standard of radiography is decreasing due to an increase in the
workload
• A shortage of radiographers in various hospitals
• Lack of adequate equipment
These challenges have an impact on the overall training of student radiographers and the
profession as a whole.
As a branch we took the initiative of addressing the problems by encouraging radiographers
to have pride in their work and not compromise the quality even under stressful working
conditions. We as radiographers need to remember that good quality x-rays allow doctors
to make more reliable diagnosis and receive the correct treatment and therefore making a
difference in one’s life.
Last but not least I would like to mention that Carole Francis, our branch secretary who has
been a part of SORSA for all her working life and has graciously served in her position as
branch secretary for the past 10 years. She has been a committed and sincerely valued
committee member during her tenure, she will be stepping down from at the 2013 AGM/
Mini Seminar. Her hard work, dedication and love for her job will be missed and therefore
we bid her a great farewell and success for the future.
Jenny Motto
A True Advocate Of The Philosophy Of Live Long Learning
Jenny qualified as a diagnostic radiographer in 1967. She obtained her Higher Diploma
in Radiography by travelling to England in 1976 and then she gained a Higher Education
Diploma from UNISA in 1987. She continued by obtaining a Masters Degree in Technology:
Education in 2001 and she is not finished yet as she is registered for her Doctoral studies
in Radiography.
She has been actively involved in the growth of Radiography as a profession in South
Africa. She has lectured to many of us in the profession today and has been an inspiration
to continue with our studies. The Department of Radiography has grown from the early
beginnings to where it is today largely due to Jenny’s dedication to the education of
our radiographers.
Jenny is retiring from her post at the end of 2012 as the Vice Dean in the Faculty of Health
Science, University of Johannesburg, which she has held since 2008. We can be sure that
this is not the end of Jenny’s involvement with education and radiography. Jenny also has
a high profile in the rest of Africa due to her position as the coordinator for education for the
ISRRT and has travelled to Malawi, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria in recent months. Jenny we
are in awe of your commitment to the radiography profession and wish you well for all your
future endeavors hopefully including some lighthearted frivolous adventures in
your retirement.
IN APPRECIATION – FROM THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT UJ
On behalf of the international students (B-Tech Radiography 2012) of the University of
Diagnostic (Provincial) : Lungile Boshego
The year 2012 has been a great year inspite of all the challenges we have had such as
companies not being paid and machines not being serviced on time. However, the staff in
their different institutions did their best to continue good service to their patients.
Some institutions received new x-ray machines and mobile units.
The OSD was introduced by National Health as a professional staff retention initiative in
2010, but it seems that it has not worked because Radiographers still continue to leave for
the private sector so many departments remain affected by the shortage of staff.
With the ever increasing population of the greater Johannesburg area more radiographers
will be required at all the Provincial facilities that have X-Ray Departments: CHC’s, District
Hospitals, Regional & Academic Hospitals alike.
Radiation Therapy (Provincial): Christina Tshbabala
It has been a privilege to represent Radiotherapy and it has also been a learning
opportunity for me.
The year 2012 has been both challenging and exciting. The non-payment issue affected
service delivery and aggravated poor prognosis in most of our patients. Although some of
the outstanding payments were settled in August we are still facing challenges with regard
to machines that continue to be problematic. Our students were also adversely affected by
late payment of their bursaries.
Despite all this the Therapy Radiographers enjoyed professional growth with a number of
activities throughout the year such as the SORSA Seminars, the HPCSA Seminar and our
Radiation Onclology Department weekly presentations.
Regarding the training of the Therapy students, we have enjoyed a fulfilling journey with
them which culminated in a successful prize-giving and we are looking forward to working
alongside our new students in 2013.
ULTRASOUND REPRESENTATIVE : AADILA HAFFEJE
I joined the radiography programme when I began training as a student in 2004 at Helen
Joseph Hospital. After qualifying in 2006, I completed my Community Service at Rahima
Moosa Hospital in 2007. Late in 2007, the opportunity arose for me to study Ultrasound.
I started the course without knowing what an impact it was going to make on my life. I
can now say that I have found my place in the world. I received my B.Tech in Ultrasound
in 2009 and began working at Helen Joseph in 2010, where I am currently a Chief
Sonographer. As a student Sonographer I assisted with planning and organising workshops
for the Northern Regions Sonographers Association (NORSA). This lead to me becoming
the Chairperson of NORSA.
ULTRASOUND REPORT
Yasmin Casmod obtained her M Tech qualification and graduated in September.
Ntombi Madondo, a Sonographer at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, was selected to be
part of a research project and will travel to the UK at the end of November for a week.
Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital was able to train only one student in
2012. Equipment has been a major issue this year, however the department coped well
despite the difficult situation.
The Helen Joseph Hospital ultrasound department requires another Sonographer and even
though the issue was discussed in April as I was going on maternity leave from May to
September, no progress had been made by November.
Two staff members resigned at Rahima Moosa hospital during the course of 2012, one of
whom will be taking employment at UJ as a lecturer.
The Northern Regions Sonar Association (NORSA) held their first workshop in May 2012.
It was held at Respiratory Care Africa in Kya Sands. The workshop was well attended and
focussed on Musculoskeletal ultrasound. Speakers included
Dr Aden and Annarie Pietersen.
MR X-RAY PASSES ON
BILL SYKES
13 JANUARY 1933- 17 AUGUST 2012
Bill was born in Johannesburg in 1933 . He grew up in one of the tougher areas in the
south of Johannesburg and after school started an apprenticeship as an electro mechanical
technician. Bill initially worked for Protea Medical who were the Siemens agents back
in those days and after many years of happy association with them left to work with a
company called CE Electro Medical who had the agency for the CGR range of x-ray
equipment. After a number of years with CE Electro Medical, Bill together with very good
friends Frank Allasio and Bernard Lutz broke away and started their own company called
X-ray Services, this later became X-ray Imaging Services or as most people knew it as XIS.
Along with XIS came the Shimadzu agency , this being the first Japanese x-ray equipment
to be imported into the country. It was a battle to get the brand established as not only was
there post war negative sentiment towards the Japanese but many believed the equipment
was designed for small people and could not give good images with us big “boere”. Bill
had absolute faith in the brand and would freely offer to take back any equipment that the
customer was not 100% happy with. In all the years of business, he never had to once fulfil
that offer as his honest business approach and fanatical attention to technical service had
his customers loving the Shimadzu brand .
7
XIS grew to be one of the largest suppliers of X-ray equipment in the country, it was a truly
one stop shop for any and all radiographic equipment and the service department was
renowned for being able to fix just about anything electronic. Many of the top names in the
x-ray game today started out as technicians training at XIS and anybody who did ,will tell
you just how good that basic foundation was.
Towards the end of 1998 Bill and his partners decided to sell XIS to Macmed in order to
allow it to flourish with the promise of added financial support from the large corporation.
Unfortunately we all know what happened to Macmed and Bill felt it especially hard as it
was his “child” that was destroyed in the Macmed fall. Happily he had stepped away from
the business totally before the collapse, but even though he was not involved he still kept
a keen eye on the x-ray business and it was especially heart sore for him to see his staff
suffer from the situation.
With the Shimadzu agency in South Africa in jeopardy of suffering the neglect of Macmed
but with his hands tied due to restraint of trades , Bill could not personally do anything to
rectify the situation . Bill contacted an old business friend Mr Peter Goldberg as well as the
top man form Siemens at the time Mr Alan Trappitt, he explained the situation and before
long had convinced them to start a new company in the same vein as XIS. AXIM was born
and immediately picked up where XIS had left off and once again the Shimadzu agency
was in good hands. Many of the old XIS people moved across to AXIM and took with them
the same old ethics from XIS.
Bill kept a careful eye on the Shimadzu business and was always available to give advice
and help where he could.
In the early 2000’s Bill moved to a fruit farm in Villiersdorp and at the age where most are
happy to relax , he began farming. He enjoyed a fruitful ( no pun intended) 10 odd years on
the farm and finally retired to Somerset West.
Bill passed away on the 17 th August 2012 after a six month battle with Cancer. Right up to
the end Bill kept up his positive attitude and interests. Bill is survived by his wife Gail, eight
children , 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Bill was truly a legend in the x-ray
industry, there will only ever be one MR X-RAY.
DIAGNOSTIC REPRESENTATIVE (PROVINCIAL) : LUNGILE BOSHEGO
I was born in a small town called Bergville in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) on the 28 May 1983 as
Lungile Dubazana. My mother had seven children of which five are boys and two are girls, I
am the second born of that seven. I started my schooling at Mamponjwana Primary School
and went to Isibuko High School for two years, then moved to Johannesburg at the
age of sixteen.
On my arrival in Johannesburg I moved in with my father and my step mother in Leondale
in Germiston. Continued with my schooling at Germiston High School where I participated
in extra mural activities that did not have the privilledge to play back home. I played hockey,
squash, a bit of tennis and also did swimming.
I completed my matric but did not do well in Physical Science. After that I worked at a local
pharmacy with the hope of raising money to further my studies. I did that for two years
then registered with the former Johannesburg Technical College now called Johannesburg
Central College. I passed my Physics well then in 2005 and applied to the University of
Johannesburg to study towards a National Diploma : Radiography Diagnostics.
In 2006 I did my first year while doing my practical training with the Charlotte Maxeke
Johannesburg Academic Hospital (then Johannesburg Hospital). In the year 2008 I did
my third year which turned out to be a great year because I got few awards which were
“All Rounder Radiographer”, “Consistent Student Over The Three Years Of Training” and
“Paediatric Award”. Then I went on to do my Community Service at Heidelberg Hospital. At
the end of my service contract I was offered a senior post and then stayed for another eight
months before deciding to come back to CMJAH.
On the 08 October 2011 I got married to a wonderful man Tebogo Boshego, thats how i
became a Boshego. In 2012 I was honoured to be elected to be a Diagnostic Provincial
Represantative which has been an amazing experience in my career. In a few years to
come I would love to see myself obtaining a qualification in Ultrasound.
EDUCATION REPRESENTATIVE : LYNNE HAZELL
I completed my Diploma of the College of Radiographers in the United Kingdom and
worked at Doncaster Royal Infirmary before travelling to South Africa to work as a
radiographer to gain experience in various private practices. I worked at Rand Mutual
Hospital a referral hospital for the Chamber of Mines for over ten years and then was
employed at the Park Lane Clinic. I worked on a part-time basis for the TWR lecturing and
assessing students in the clinical environment. In 2005 I joined the staff of the University of
Johannesburg in a full time position. I coordinate the Clinical Programme for the Diagnostic
Diploma students and lecture to the 1 st year and B Tech students in Radiographic Practice.
I have a Bachelor of Arts from UNISA with a distinction in Economics and a B Tech in
Radiography (cum laude) from the University of Johannesburg I have an interest in
radiographers role extension and using pattern recognition skills to interpret images and
have submitted a M Tech dissertation on this theme.
I am married with two children. My son is registered for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Rhodes
University and my daughter is completing her Matric in 2012. In my spare time I enjoy
photography and I combine this with a love of the game reserve.
EDUCATION REPORT
The University of Johannesburg intended to introduce a professional degree in
Radiography in 2013, however, at present the implementation date for the qualification has
had to be delayed.
The 3 rd year students of 2012 have all been allocated to their placements for community
service for 2013.
The SORSA committee came to speak to the 3 rd year radiographers in October about the
role of SORSA.
The University of Johannesburg, Faculty of Health Science is sending a top achieving
student from each department in the Faculty to the Appalachian University in the USA from
the 24 th November to the 4 th of December 2012. Our student is a second year student
Judith Toyhakale, she is employed at Dr.Dzichauya and Mashao at Botshelong Hospital.
The students will learn about the American health system and how the South African health
system compares to the American system. The students will also get the opportunity to visit
the White House and meet the Government Representative for Health.
Mesego Segaetso - Representing 1st Year Students at UJ
Groups, named “Co-operative Learning”, were formed amongst the first year students
at UJ, where students were grouped according to their birth months. The aim was to
encourage the first year students to associate and help each other with both academic and
personal matters.
The first year students who are practising under DRS (Diagnostic Radiological Services
Inc) started rotating at 3 different hospitals from April onwards.
World Radiography day took place on 9 November 2012 at the Soweto campus.
Attending the brach committee meetings has taught me that the success of every practice
does not only depend on the team leaders but on the entire team. There are always
obstacles in practices. Radiation workers are extremely responsible and that is how they
manage to overcome all these obstacles. This has encouraged me to go on being a
responsible student radiographer and carry that attitude with me as a
qualified radiographer.
Safiyyah Jamal - Representing 2nd Year Students at UJ
My experience of being on board with SORSA, I am privilege to be part of this Society,
being able to share my ideas, help and gain knowledge with the members.
SORSA first seminar of 2012 was one of my great experiences, I was elected to be the MC
for the first half of the seminar, and my nerves were shot, having to introduce Doctors to
hundreds of people. But none the less the seminar helped me a lot, gain more confidence
and the talks that were given helped to put work into perspective that I was thought through
the rest of the year and I was also able to share this with my classmates.
SORSA ‘S second seminar all I can say is “PINK PINK” was wonderful to see man and
women dressed up in pink, from lovely floral dresses, shirts and pink pretty feathers .
It was good to interact with different people old and young while listening to talks from
specialists. I learnt a lot about mammography, things that I did not even know about. But I
know will help me later in life.
Last but not least, the most exciting part would have been our end of year function “HIGH
TEA” at the Michelangelo hotel. We were able to sit down relax and talk about anything
other than work, while sipping on some coffee and nibbling on the mouthwatering treats.
Tlhalefang Mokoena - Representing 3rd Year Students at UJ
Being a part of something is important whether a family, a company or a Society. When
I was selected as one of the third year representative members for the Society of
Radiographers of South Africa (SORSA) JHB Branch, I was both anxious and excited.
As student radiographers we find that the transition from being a high school student to
being both a student and a health care worker requires an alteration of our social life. There
is no time to do the things as we used to do and hardly any energy left over for sports and
hobbies. As the years progress we learn how to manage our time more efficiently in order
to fit in everything.
Although the workload in third year is a lot, I have found that attending meetings and
seminars has improved on both my time management and my marks. I remember
particularly the Breast Seminar in October that turned out to be an enjoyable form of
revision for my final pathology paper.
The seminars were my favourite part of being a Society member. Being a part of the
planning process and seeing how the puzzle pieces come together and what it takes to
achieve the final product. I have learned the importance of team work and sacrifice. The
Society has adopted us to be a part of one strong body made of influencential individuals in
their career paths.
After my experience as a student representative I am certain that I will continue being a
part of the Society and would advice all radiographers to join and play their role in building
up the Society to be an even greater entity.
Ntobeko Mchunu - Representing 3rd Year Students at UJ
Being part of the SORSA team has opened my eyes to the amount of work that goes into
organizing events such as Seminars and so forth. Being a third year student representative
allowed me to gain pre-experience about the SORSA organization and all of its duties and
the purpose of the organization. Attending the meetings every month was a lot of fun as
this was the time to throw ideas on the table about upcoming events that were going to be
taking place.
SORSA allowed students to have input within the organization, which shows that there
was no division between students who are still progressing through their studies and
the individuals who have qualified as professional Radiographers. The profession of
Radiography is a wide profession that caters for the needs of the profession as a whole.
With the dedicated members who have helped sustain the very existence of SORSA, the
organization is bound to prosper in the not so distant future.
It has been a pleasure working with the lovely ladies of the SORSA organization. If
anything at all, it has motivated me to keep within the organization and dedicate my time
to the overlooked profession of Radiography. Everyone has the right to fight for what they
believe in, everyone has the right to have a say and this is what the organization is striving
to achieve and without a doubt, I know they will succeed with this goal.
2012 Breast Health Seminar
On the 6 th of October, we had our annual Pink Seminar and were we PINK this year! Many
delegates adhered to our request that they should dress up in pink and the outfits really
added some extra finesse to the morning. We even awarded prizes to the best dressed
radiographers after their sporty participation in showing off their outfits!
The presentations were all very professionally delivered by experts in different fields of
breast health. Linda Keuvelaar from Helen Joseph Hospital shared a few case studies of
TB of the breast while Dr Shirley Lipschitz discussed breast images in general and the role
of tomosynthesis in optimal imaging. Dr Rebecca Such explained and demonstrated the
value of MRI in breast imaging and Dr Aadil Gutta delivered a very clear presentation on
sentinel node mapping. Ms Sue Serebro gave an enthusiastic talk on lymphedema of the
breast and Ms Karen Applebaum entertained the audience with her presentation on psychosocial
counselling of breast cancer patients. All in all a program that catered for the different
disciplines of Radiography and very well received by the delegates, according to our quality
control results.
This seminar seems to be a hit and we will really try and better it every year in terms of fun,
participation and continuous education.
