Executive Summary
Canutillo Middle School Technology Plan
Page 1
Canutillo Middle School
This plan is used as a technology integration roadmap for Canutillo Middle School. Its
existence is to help navigate faculty, staff, and students to fully engage new technologies in
the learning environment. The hope is that our plan will provide many opportunities for
faculty, staff, parents and students to become avid participants of technology uses to
improve the quality of their educational experience.
Teaching and learning is a two-way process. Technology is an expeditor of automating
processes and making educational work-related tasks more efficient. Administrators,
teachers, and students can devote more time to planning what needs to be accomplished in
our school community by taking advantage of technology tools available.
The overall goal of this plan is to ensure that Canutillo Middle School is a technology
pioneer and explorer for our school community.
Purpose
CANUTILLO MIDDLE SCHOOL has prepared this Campus Technology Plan to articulate
a common vision for technology in the district and identify the strategies that will help us
use advanced technology to improve the academic achievement, including technology
literacy, of all students of rigorous curriculum standards and the development of critical
thinking skills that are essential for academic, workplace success, and build the capacity of
all teachers to integrate technology effectively into curriculum and instruction.
Background
This plan is based on information drawn from many sources including:
• A review of the literature to identify best practices.
• A survey of school site hardware and instructional media.
• A survey of teachers.
• A survey of administrators.
• Interviews with site and district administrators and representatives from the
Canutillo community.
• School site meetings.
• Other district technology plans.
• Experience from other school districts.
• CMS Technology Committee.
Parameters
This Campus Technology Plan is driven by the state curriculum standards and supports the
educational mission and instructional goals of CANUTILLO MIDDLE SCHOOL and by
the No Child Left Behind Act 2001 (NCLB). The Technology Applications Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), required in the Texas Education Code, Section 28.002, give
specific attention to addressing student standards for technology as defined. The
Technology Applications TEKS found in 19 TAC Chapter 126 describes what students
Canutillo Middle School Technology Plan
Page 2
Canutillo Middle School
should know and be able to do using technology. As a part of the enrichment curriculum,
these TEKS are to be used as guidelines for providing instruction. The goal of the
Technology Applications TEKS is for students to gain technology-based knowledge and
skills and to apply them to all curriculum areas at all grade levels.
The plan stresses the importance of ongoing and sustained staff development in the
integration of technology into the curriculum for teachers, principals, administrators, and
school library media personnel to further the effective use of technology in the classroom
or library media center. It also is consistent with the recommendations for LEAs as defined
by the Texas Campus Plan for Technology in the areas of Teaching and Learning, Educator
Preparation and Development, Administration and Support Services, and Infrastructure for
Technology, as well as the e-rate applications guidelines, and other state standards, such as
the newly adopted Technology Applications Standards for Beginning Teachers.
Introduction
Canutillo Middle School serves 685 students, 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grade. There are 60 faculty
members. The Technology Committee consists of 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grade technology-adept
teachers, the librarian, guidance counselor, parent liaison, and the Instructional
Coordinator. The Technology Committee members play a key role in planning and
coordinating technology on campus. The technology plan for Canutillo Middle School
introduces, implements, and monitors five goals.
Goal 1: All students and staff will be afforded equal access to up-to-date technology and
learning.
Goal 2: Teacher and administrators will be afforded equal access to technology for the
purpose of planning and presenting instruction, processing information, enhancing
decision-making, tracking student progress, and improving communication.
Goal 3: Technology Application TEKS will be integrated into the education curriculum.
Goal 4: Student-centered learning will be the prime focus using technology as a tool.
Goal 5: Community members will have equal opportunities to access technology for the
purpose of reinforcing basic skills and advanced communication skills.
Vision Statement
Our vision for the future of technology and education in Canutillo Middle School is to
establish a Student Help Desk for Technology. This help desk would be on a volunteer
basis to assist in any technology problems that may arise and resolve them in a timely
manner. Students of good standing academically and excellent school citizenship could be
selected and trained by the network technician. This would give students a greater depth of
computer technologies and assist the network technician when there are several work
orders to be investigated and completed.
Canutillo Middle School Technology Plan
Page 3
Canutillo Middle School
As dollars permit and prices are within the budget, the classroom of the future will consist
of flat screens with built-in computer processing units (CPUs), keyboards will be foldouts,
and actual workspace will increase. There will be glass cylinder workstations where
smaller handheld devices will be housed, similar to existing Internet cafes. Most data will
be scanned in with portable and smaller scanning devices and less data typed.
The QWERTY method of typing will be replaced by the DVORAK method of typing. It is
much faster, both to learn, and in the keystrokes per hour achieved. The DVORAK method
does not incur the carpal tunnel syndrome problem that occurs with QWERTY method.
Ergonomic methods have helped alleviate slightly that problem with the QWERTY
method. However, a student with a wrist injury, although healed, becomes painful over
time in keystrokes performed. The DVORAK method offers an opportunity for our
students to learn typing faster and helps special needs students or other students who have
had hand and wrist injuries in the past.
In addition, it is the belief of Canutillo Middle School that students, faculty, parents, and
community members have the opportunity to become familiar with the use and applications
of technology. Canutillo Middle School recognizes the following needs as stated.
1. Acquire computers and software that are supported by an LAN infrastructure that
enhances productivity of teachers, students, and staff members. Canutillo Middle
School supports on-line technology applications that accelerate learning and feedback
both to teachers and students.
2. Maintain staff development.
3. Integrate technology into the curriculum.
4. Make computers accessible to all students.
5. Support technology policies and regulations.
6. Provide the needed information as required under NCLB.
7. Develop adult and community education programs, and
8. Sustain Accelerated Reader program for the campus.
Mission Statement
All students attending Canutillo Middle School will have the opportunity to uniformly
access and use technology in its various forms in the pursuit of achieving their full academic
potential. The faculty and staff embrace technology as part of the Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills for curriculum design and implementation production of life long
learners.
Canutillo Middle School is committed to providing the technological resources necessary to
support exemplary teaching and learning of all students and to ensure effective and efficient
administration and operations. Technology planning and activities are centered on the
students, faculty, and community members.

Needs
The Technology Committee’s strategic plan reflects an understanding that technology is a
tool to enhance and enrich teachers and students educational experience. A robust
infrastructure of computerized networks serves as the backbone to provide this valuable
resource in local and on-line applications. Support of continual upgrade of servers to
provide timely access is an integral part of the success of technology at Canutillo Middle
School.
Canutillo Middle School’s greatest need is to provide up-to-date technology to the students
and staff that enhance productivity in educational pursuits. Canutillo Middle School
teachers are given in-services to help them integrate technology across their curriculum as
mandated and needed. Technology access is available to them on a daily basis. Students
need to explore and use up-to-date tools to do their assigned integrated-curriculum
technology projects to expand their educational knowledge. Funding for the technology is
done through campus budgets, grants and gifts, and federal and state program funding.
Professional development is continually needed in order to maintain a high level of
knowledge in the field of technology. A full time Instructional Coordinator and District
Lead Technology Teacher is an asset for training, facilitating, and support in the integration
of technology.
In addition, other technology knowledgeable faculty is supportive and integral in helping to
meet our campus’s needs.
Technical support is a constant need with the number of computers on campus. This
support comes from the full time System and Support Technicians and Technology
Assistant employed in the School Resources Division, Technology Department.
Infrastructure for Technology
Infrastructure for Technology focuses on hardware, software, and human infrastructure (the
capabilities or proficiencies of those who use the technical components). The infrastructure
of a school is the critical element of support for all four areas of the Campus Plan for
Technology. This hardware—and the connecting peripherals such as the network
connections and the resulting communications capabilities—enables the system to function
properly. The infrastructure provides the foundation for software applications, computer
programs such as graphics or spreadsheets, and the TEKS content.
The primary goal in this area will be:
• To ensure that all students and teachers have increased access to technology.
• To enforce a policy of Internet safety that includes measures to block or filter
content for both minors and adults to certain visual depictions.
• To provide an on-line email service to support user accounts with more space each
school year.
Canutillo Middle School Technology Plan
Page 11
Canutillo Middle School
• To provide an automated phone system known as Phone Master to call parents
when their children are absent to verify the absences.
• Provide technological goods and services to meet the campus program needs that
has five objectives as follows:
- Develop a needs assessment to determine our technological needs.
- Conduct needs assessment annually.
- Review needs assessment annually.
- Maintain an inventory of hardware and peripherals.
- Provide service to the campus and departments through the expertise of the
Instructional Coordinator and District Lead Technology Teacher.
• Provide appropriate staff development in the use of technology on a continuous
basis and has five objectives as follows:
- Implement a technology staff development plan for instructional and support
personnel based on their needs.
- Continue to train teachers on state technology mandates.
- Establish a campus teacher cadre under/with the Instructional Coordinator by
cluster and/or department.
- Develop the campus technology-training center further with the addition of
more stations and Internet access.
- Send staff to regional state technology related conferences: TAGT, INET, and
Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) Conference.
• Provide appropriate staff development in the use of technology on a continuous
basis and has three objectives as follows:
- Maximize the existing computer labs for TAKS training and acceleration.
- Research and review new technologies to facilitate teaching and learning.
- Promote networking (intranet and internet) to facilitate research, instruction,
and communication.
Canutillo Learning Community to include community members,
parents, teachers, support staff, and administrators.
Goals that will be addressed include:
• Continue to upgrade existing technology and integrate new technology into the
campus instructional plan and has one objective:
- Promote networking (intranet and internet) to facilitate research, instruction,
and communication.

Canutillo Middle School
CANUTILLO MIDDLE SCHOOL and CANUTILLO ISD are committed to sustaining and
improving the use of technology to increase the academic performance of all students. Beyond
the state technology allotment, the district has contributed local funds in the past for
technology enhancements and will continue to do so in the future. The technology staff is
also active in working to ensure that all technology equipment functions well and to seek
additional funding sources for equipment, services, software, and other electronically
delivered learning materials and print resources that will ensure successful and effective
uses of technology.
CANUTILLO MIDDLE SCHOOL and CANUTILLO ISD are also committed to continuing
to increase the number of computer workstations for students and staff until the TEA target
equipment ratios are met. These workstations will be purchased out of local and other
available funds and will be purchased in mass quantities. This will help us to achieve cost
savings due to volume bidding and discounts. The school district is also participating in the
E-rate program and has applied for approximately $ TBA in discounts district-wide.
