BRAILLE INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT LIGHT 2005 “Thinking back from when I first lost my sight to where I stand today, I know I’ve accomplished more than I ever could have if I hadn’t sought help. But there’s still a feeling inside of me that there’s more left to do and I am infinitely more inspired to help others now.” “Learning braille has been life changing for Tiffany; it’s how she fills herself with knowledge.” “I look at it this way—I’ve made so many friends that I never in the world would have encountered, so maybe there’s a reason. Yes, it’s frustrating at times, things I can’t do. So I enjoy the things I can do. And I’ve learned not to fret—even if I miss one bus, another will come along.” “Her teacher even told me that when she asks Tiffany to try something new, now Tiffany will say, ‘Yes, I will try that!’ Her attitude has changed. She believes in what she can do. To us, that gives us the most hope.”
For Tiffany, Luella and Michael—faced with the reality of sight loss— the first question may indeed have been… why? But as they individually moved beyond denial and despair, determined to take their lives positively forward, they were able to turn “why?” into “why not?” The answer, it would seem, was inside of them all along. They just needed a little help bringing it out. What other positive changes have we made this year and where are we going?
