Page 4—Thursday, May 3, 2012, The Callaway Courier Banged up boys back off at Custer County Track Meet BROKEN BOW — The South Loup boys track team scored 116 points to finish as the runners-up at the Custer County Invitational in Broken Bow last Thursday. Without sprinter Derek Hildebrandt and thrower Drew Bowers participating, and with several other athletes resting sore muscles, team scoring was down some, said Boys Coach Rick Peterson. “This was the seventh meet of the season and we had to rest some athletes so that we will be healthy and ready to go for districts May 9,” he said. The coach said the Bobcats did have some outstanding performances; probably the most impressive was the quartet of Taylor Linegar, Zane Ellis, Kyle Pierce and Aaron Stryker with their 3:34.2 in the 1,600 meter relay. Brady Weinman again tied his personal best in the pole vault with a vault of 13 feet, 6 inches. The 3,200 meter relay team of Levi Loper, Layton Dockweiler, Garret Dockweiler and Kyle Pierce also won again by nearly 30 seconds. Ryan Monninger ran personal bests and placed in both of the distance races. Other individual winners for the Bobcats on the day were Kyle Pierce in the 800 meter and Tanner Cline in the long jump. Pride is on the line at the LVC Invitational in Broken Bow this Thursday, May 3. The Bobcats will again go up against the class of the conference in Twin Loup which used its depth and speed to amass 187 points at the Custer County Invite. Field events begin at 10 a.m. South Loup will journey to Bassett for the D-9 District this Wednesday hosted by Rock County. Also pictured is Rebecca Johnson (left) Bobcat girls take second at Custer County Invite BROKEN BOW — Though only a small meet by usual standards, the South Loup Bobcat girls did something they haven’t before: break 100 points. South Loup scored 115 points on their way to second place at the Custer County Invite last Thursday. Girls Coach Mike Weverka said the team has come a long way this season. “The girls set some personal goals after the first meet and they’re reaching that.” The coach said he loaded up some events, including the relays, just to see how many points they could score and the result was numerous personal best times and distances. Ansley/Litchfield proved the class of the field scoring 196 points for the team title while Anselmo-Merna was a distant third with 88 points. Headlining the day was sophomore shot putter Michaela Weverka who regained her form with a personal best 38 feet, 8.5 inches for first place and took second in the discus. Freshman Shayla Dockweiler found 5 feet again in the high jump for the gold and placed in both the 100 and 200. Hannah Magill also took the pole vault needing only 7 feet. She’s nursing a sore patellar tendon and was a foot off her best. After seven meets, the team is a bit banged up. Claire Beshaler hurt an ankle and the Bobcats scratched the 4x800 relay as a result. “We started off great but those kinds of things slow you down a little,” Weverka said. “But, when push came to shove, everyone stepped up when we needed it. Not much to say about it but 115 points and second place.” LVC starts at 10 a.m., this Thursday, May 3, in Broken Bow. The coach noted that many of the same teams they faced at the Custer County Invite will be in the LVC so it will be a good test. The D-9 District will be a Bassett this Wednesday, May 9, with host Rock County. Starting time was not yet available for the Wednesday, May 9 test for state berths.
