When it goes right for the South Loup Lady Bobcats, it can go really right. South Loup took advantage of a Medicine Valley foul trouble to explode for 24 points in the fourth quarter downing the winless Lady Raiders 58-38 for their second win of the season last Friday night. Up until the start of the fourth, the Raiders and Bobcats battled back and forth with Med Valley leading 31-27 late in the third. But the Bobcats were closing as the Raiders were tagged with six quick fouls that put both 5-foot-11 senior Taylor Sandoe and 5-foot-8 sophomore Grayce Jorgensen on the bench with four each. Med Valley got real thin coming off the bench and South Loup took advantage. Jordan Rush, Shayla Dockweiler and Racheal Smith combined for 8 points that put the Bobcats up 34-31 using the fast break effectively. Head Coach Abe Hinman said fouls were a key in that while South Loup’s were accumulating, MV was getting into worse trouble. “That really hurt them having their two best players coming off the floor,” he said. Then Dockweiler got hot Sports Pages Lady Bobcats notch 2nd win at MV hitting the next four buckets on the break, two off Med Valley turnovers, and suddenly it was 42-31. It’s something they work on in practice, Hinman said. Look up, and if someone is open up the court, throw it. Rush hit another one inside and then Michaela Weverka made her second three-point play of the night getting fouled on the bucket and making the free throw. “I thought those three-point plays were big,” Hinman said. South Loup made its free throws down the stretch sinking 4-of-5 and capped the night with Jenna Hoesel and Racheal Smith canning the last 6 points for the most scored all season by the Bobcats. Rush led South Loup scoring with 21 points, including 5-of- 5 at the line, and grabbed 13 boards for the double-double. Dockweiler finished with 16 points while Weverka and Smith both put up 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Also of note, the Bobcats kept turnovers down to 11. “The girls were really excited about that,” Hinman said. They shoot well, they rebound well, they have an inside and outside presence. Yeah, I think they are a top team.” He added that there could have been a little more effort from the Bobcats who came out looking flat and slow. “But Mullen is a good team and sometimes a good team can make you look like you’re not putting the effort in.” Coming up South Loup journeys to Maxwell Thursday and Friday for a pre-holiday tournament. The Bobcats take on Brady (5-1) in the opener at 3 p.m., Thursday (today). Maxwell and SMC are on the other side of the bracket. Friday play begins with girls consolation final at 3 p.m. Hinman said Brady likes to play up-tempo and so the Bobcats will try to slow down their press and fast break. Scoring by quarters South Loup ........................ 7 4 4 2—17 Mullen .................................4 7 4 14—29 It was a tough week for the Bobcat boys basketball team taking a 64-36 beating at the hands of Medicine Valley Friday night following a 73-46 loss to 7-0 Mullen on Dec. 11. “It was,” agreed Head Coach Jeff Cole. “I said at the beginning of the year these were both quality ball clubs and we would have to catch them on an off night. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch either one of them on an off night because they played very, very well. It’s always reassuring when the opposing coach says, ‘yeah, this is the best our team has played all year.’ We either bring out the best in everybody or defensively we just aren’t getting it done.” The Raiders (3-4) proved Friday their record is deceptive having a brutal schedule so far but they proved fast, agile and good at shooting inside and out while grabbing the boards at an alarming rate (41-24) against South Loup. Cole said it’s been rebounding and missing the easy shots when they get them that has the Bobcats reeling right now. He calls rebounding a mentality that the Bobcats just have shown thus far. “It’s going to be a long year if they don’t.” Eighteen offensive boards given up and somewhere around 30 points in missed lay-ups helped keep the Bobcats in trouble. Cole said you can’t run if you don’t make the lay-ups on the break. only to fall again to Jake Wells of Anselmo-Merna who accounts for all three Dockweiler losses this season. He has 9 wins. “It was a tough meet, with some of the top teams and wrestlers in the state,” said Head Coach Matt Coleman. “We were once again short on wrestlers due to illness and grades.” The only other wrestlers to get close to medal territory was Dillon Olson (285) who went 2-2 on the day. “Dillon wrestled very well, going 2-2 on the day, but came up short of a medal,” the coach said. Amherst continues to dominate area meets gathering in 238 points to put Maxwell in a distant second with 149. Med Valley simply pulled away. Lucas Gleisberg, a 6-foot-1 senior for MV, shredded the Bobats for 21 points while sophomore Cody Aspenleiter put up 14 to pace the Raiders. Tanner Cline and Oscar Gonzalez managed 8 points each for the Bobcats. Cline also led with five rebounds. Otherwise, South Loup was about 25% shooting from the field but did hit 7 threes on 13 attempts. South Loup at Mullen Mullen out-scored the Bobcats 43-19 in the first half. It steadied in the second 30-27 but the damage was already done. Mullen owned a 34-18 rebound advantage. Neither side were decisive in turnovers or free throws. Cole said around 20 points in missed lay-ups would have made a big difference in this game. “We’re getting the easy shots, we’re just not making them.” Foul trouble also put key players on the bench making it difficult to match up. Still, the coach said they will just try to learn from their mistakes and try to get better as the season progresses. Coming up South Loup (1-4) will take on Brady (4-1) at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, in the Maxwell Tournament. Maxwell (0-6) and SMC (2-3) will meet in the other side of the bracket. Consolation play begins the Friday half at 3 p.m., with the girls game. Boys consolation and the championship games will follow that. South Loup will host Sandhills/Thedford at Arnold on Jan. 3, following the Christmas break. JVs fall to Med Valley South Loup JV led the Raiders by 3 until the third and final quarter when MV went on a 19-9 run and won 31-24 Friday afternoon.
