A message from ELF
A Letter from the President December 2011
Dear Easton Residents,
The Easton Learning Foundation (ELF) has funded approximately $500,000 to provide many innovative
grants to Easton public schools since its inception in 2004. These grants provide creative classroom
projects, innovative technology and valuable professional development for educators.
Last year, ELF approved over 50 grants including those highlighted below and this year brings the
promise of additional grants that will help launch our children into a new era of learning. Most
recently, the principals at the middle school and elementary school applied for a grant for the first
ever "Mobile iPad Classroom" at HKMS and SSES. Each of these mobile iPad classrooms will
provide 25 brand new iPads for students. The iPads will be shared among the different disciplines as
well as among the different grade levels. The total cost of the two mobile classrooms with apps and
training is $45,000.
The proceeds from the December ELF Holiday Fundraiser Party and the annual town-wide appeal
(included in this newsletter) will be the source of funding for this grant. As soon as the money is
raised, the iPads will be on order! To see how close we are to reaching our fundraising goal, go to
the “iPad Fundraiser” page on our website.
The principals came to ELF to fund their vision of piloting the iPad classrooms in their schools in the
first quarter of 2012 and we are hopeful that together with our donors we'll be able to deliver.
On behalf of the entire ELF board, thank you for your support of ELF and Easton students.
Happy Holidays!
With great pride and sincerity,
DID YOU HEAR THE NEWS?! HKMS won a National “Blue Ribbon Award!” They
were one of 33 middle school winners out of approximately 16,000 public/private middle schools
in the U.S. Thank you to all for your support of our schools! Get details at: www.helenkellerps.org
Thirteen SSES students qualified as finalists
for the state-wide CT Invention Convention
2011
JBHS science teachers received a grant
HKMS health teachers received a grant to
fund a new “3 Yr Executive Functioning”
course to help all middle school students
better organize their work, take efficient
notes, review lessons and manage time.
Great lifelong skills!
This past spring SSES’s 4th grade teachers applied
for a grant for their students to participate in the
Connecticut Invention Convention – a statewide
science fair. ELF helped to fund the event by
giving them a grant that covered registration fees
and medals for all participants. The students each
had the opportunity to brainstorm, design and
physically build a prototype of an invention of
their own. From an education standpoint, the
teachers were thrilled to see their students carry
an idea all the way from conception through
problem solving, display and presentation. Even
better – all their efforts were a furthering of their
core curriculum in math and science.
The pride not only on the teacher’s faces, but on
the students’ faces as they presented their ideas
to the judges, was testament to the fact that
TO THE PARKER FAMILY:
ELF is truly touched by the thoughtfulness
of the Parker Family. Jeff, Meghan and Beth
chose ELF as the charity to receive
donations in lieu of flowers in memory of
Joan C. Parker, Helen Keller Middle School
principal, Easton resident and dear friend to
so many people. ELF collected over $21,000
from the friends and relatives of the Parker
family! These funds will provide many
rewarding and valuable programs to benefit
Easton students for whom Mrs. Parker
cared for so deeply.
TO EASTON SENIORS:
Thank you to the Easton seniors for
participating in the ELF Trivia Bee and
the SSES Invention Convention. They
served as judges at the 4 th Grade
Invention Convention and many were
on trivia teams at our Bee!
TEACHER GIFTS: Visit our website for details on our “STARS” (School
Teachers Are Really Special) Program. $5 -$50 ELF STAR awards for teachers &
staff. Visit http://eastonlearningfoundation.org/stars.html for all the details.
enabling children to apply their knowledge
and creative thinking with hands-on opportunities
truly furthers their ability to master problem
solving.
The judges selected finalists who then attended
the state competition at UCONN in Storrs, CT.
We are so proud that 13 SSES students qualified
to go to the statewide convention. Six SSES
students won awards among over 600
participants! It was truly a very exciting and
inspiring day. We are hopeful that this experience
has sparked a tradition of creative problem
solving that will persist in years to come.
"The Joan C. Parker Grant"
The Joan C. Parker Grant is awarded annually by
the Easton Learning Foundation to educators who
inspire innovation in the fields of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math. Joan C.
Parker, a leader who cultivated creativity and
inventiveness, collaborated with ELF throughout
her career to bring innovative technology, handson
learning and engineering programs to
Easton students. These grants will ensure that
Joan C. Parker's vision will continue in
partnership with ELF to benefit Easton children.
Important Things We’d Like You to Know
What is the Easton Learning Foundation?
The Easton Learning Foundation (ELF), founded in 2004, is a nonprofit,
tax-exempt organization of community volunteers that is
dedicated to quality education and lifelong learning for Easton
residents. To that end, the Foundation strives to secure financial and
human resources for innovative educational projects and programs.
All grants benefit the residents and businesses of Easton by making
our community a highly desirable place to live, work and raise a
family.
What does the Easton Learning Foundation board do?
The ELF board meets monthly for two hours and its activities include:
setting fundraising targets, assessing how well the Foundation is
doing, improving interaction with the community and reviewing
school grant requests. The grant approval process is a critical
function of the ELF board. The board reviews each grant to ensure
that each project will improve the learning experience in the
classroom and verifies that the cost of the grant is not covered by the
school budget. We take our mission very seriously and strive for the
maximum impact from donations.
How does ELF reach out to the public?
ELF donations are at work everyday in our schools, and we want to
keep donors informed. We update our website continuously, send email
blasts to our subscribers, post news on Facebook, and e-mail an
annual “Donation Report” to the community.
What types of grants does ELF fund?
We have many grant requests for classroom projects, teacher
development and innovative technology. ELF is funding grants at all
Easton schools and has announced a five-year focus on Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math through 2014. Please visit our
website for grant history and details on the five-year STEM campaign.
How does ELF raise money?
ELF has a town-wide Trivia Bee in May, a used sports equipment sale
in September, an annual community appeal letter campaign and social
events throughout the year. In addition, ELF offers the STARS
teacher gift program year round. ELF is building a community-wide
spirit for excellence in education, and we have many goals to reach
this year on behalf of our students and teachers.
Why would I donate to ELF if I don’t have children in
Easton public schools?
The foundation seeks broad community support to achieve its
mission: to promote excellence, innovation, and creativity in
education for our children and community. Whether or not every
family has a child presently in our schools, our education system is an
important asset to the community affecting everything from our
quality of life to our property values. Many residents want to enable
our students with the skills to be globally competitive and improve
our national security. ELF provides a way for donors to enrich
education to provide students with a state-of-the-art education in this
ever-changing global economy. We hope you include the Easton
Learning Foundation in your giving plans this year.
How can I help?
You can help ELF through financial support and/or volunteer work.
Many residents are very busy and prefer to make a donation.
Donations are a productive and efficient way to support the
Foundation and are essential to our success. We are grateful to our
financial donors. ELF also needs volunteers at all levels of involvement
ranging from people helping out occasionally at events, to board
members who are willing to attend monthly meetings and take on a
variety of responsibilities for a year. ELF has opportunities on the
newly formed Advisory Board. Our advisors meet with ELF officers
quarterly to offer guidance on how to move the ELF mission forward.
As a growing organization, ELF needs people with a variety of skill
sets but most of all, people who are passionate about education.
How do I get involved?
Call or e-mail a board member (contact info is on our website
at www.eastonlearningfoundation.org). • Sit in on an ELF board
meeting. • Volunteer for an event. • Join us for coffee. We’d
love to hear from you and figure out the right level of commitment
for you!
Organizations like ELF are born from the sincere passion to make a difference in a student’s life. Since our inception in 2004 we have been overwhelmed
with the interest, support and dedication of our community to join our mission to enrich Easton’s strong commitment to quality education
and lifelong learning. Without the volunteers, the donors and the hard work of all who have touched ELF, we would not be where we are
today. With heartfelt thanks we acknowledge in this newsletter those who have donated their time and financial support to us over the past year.
Highlights of the year ahead
Our Trivia Bee, established three years ago, began as a great opportunity for adults in our community to come together for the
greater good of Easton students. Since then, not only has the number of participants grown but the crowd – especially students – in
our audience truly contributes to one of the most fun evenings of the year. We encourage you to participate, spectate or support us
however you can at this year’s Bee.
