governing maritime operations across the<br />

Royal Dutch Shell Group.<br />

David has enjoyed a long association with<br />

organizations promoting standards within<br />

the shipping industry. Formerly chairing the<br />

OCIMF SIRE Focus Group, OCIMF’s General<br />

Purposes Committee and the Greenhouse<br />

Gas Task Force.<br />

David is a Freeman of the City of London and<br />

a Liveryman of the Honorable Company of<br />

Master Mariners through which he works to<br />

mentor cadet officers and promote careers<br />

in the merchant navy.<br />

David joined OCIMF as Director in April 2010.<br />

GRAHAM WESTGARTH<br />

President, Teekay Marine Services<br />

Graham Westgarth joined Teekay in 1999<br />

as President of Teekay Marine Services. In<br />

this role, he is responsible for the day-today<br />

operations of the Teekay fleet that is in<br />

excess of 150 vessels, and close to 5,000 multidisciplined<br />

sea and shore staff. Graham’s<br />

mandate includes newbuildings, conversions,<br />

repair and maintenance, manning and<br />

training, procurement, marine, and last but by<br />

no means least, health, safety, environment,<br />

and quality. He has over 39 years of industry<br />

experience, 17 of which were at sea, including<br />

5 years command experience. Prior to<br />

joining Teekay, Graham spent 12 years with<br />

the Maersk Company heading up its UK flag<br />

fleet. During this period, he established and<br />

was the general manager of AP Moller’s FPSO<br />

operations in the UK sector of the North Sea.<br />

In 2006, Graham relocated to Norway for 8<br />

months following the acquisition of Petrojarl<br />

ASA, and as interim CEO successfully led the<br />

company and integrated it into Teekay. In<br />

August 2007, he resumed his position in<br />

Vancouver. Graham has completed the<br />

Columbia Business School Senior Executive<br />

Development Program, and held a number<br />

of Board positions over the years, currently<br />

including North of England P&I Association,<br />

and the ABS Council. He is currently Chairman<br />

of INTERTANKO.<br />

PROACTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES<br />

FROM A SHIPOWNER’S PERSPECTIVE<br />

The presentation will open by providing<br />

an overview of the environmental impacts<br />

of shipping, and its overall efficiency when<br />

compared to other modes of transport<br />

Thereafter, the focus will be on outlining<br />

opportunities to improve the environmental<br />

footprint of vessels through various operational<br />

and technical measures, using real time examples<br />

and data to demonstrate proof of concept.<br />

Finally, a brief overview will be provided of how,<br />

by using an innovative approach to design of<br />

vessels, even further gains may be achieved in<br />

the future.<br />
