2012 Tusculum Women’s Soccer -- 3
4 - 2012 Tusculum Women’s Soccer
HEAD COACH MIKE JOY
Head coach Mike Joy has been at the helm of the Tusculum College women’s soccer program for the past 15 seasons. Those 15
years have been an era of success, resul ng in championships and na onal postseason play.
Joy rejuvenated the program upon his arrival in Greeneville in 1997, and TC women’s soccer has established itself as one of the
most formidable programs in the South Atlan c Conference and NCAA Division II. Since 2000, the Pioneers have claimed either the
SAC regular season championship, the SAC Tournament tle or advanced to the NCAA II Tournament in all but three seasons. During
his storied tenure, Joy’s teams have claimed four SAC Championships and four SAC Tournament tles in the last 10 years. Tusculum
has also accounted for a remarkable 14 straight non-losing seasons during Joy’s watch.
Coach Joy’s squads have grown accustomed to facing tough compe on, as TC tradi onally plays a challenging schedule consis
ng of a number of Top 25 opponents. His desire to face some of Division II’s best teams makes Joy’s 200-91-21 coaching record at
Tusculum all the more impressive. He is one of the winningest all- me coaches in NCAA Division II women’s soccer, ranking fi h with
286 total victories and 17th with a .699 career win percentage. With a 72-29-7 record (.699) against SAC opponents, Joy ranks second
all- me among SAC women’s soccer coaches in league victories (72). He also places second with 200 overall wins (since 1998).
The Pioneers ba led to a third-place fi nish in the SAC in 2011, despite facing three na onally-ranked opponents and dropping
three games in over me. Tusculum fi nished 10-7-2 overall and 5-4 overall, highlighted by a fi ve-match winning streak at midseason.
The Pioneers’ run in the SAC tournament was derailed by a loss in penalty kicks on the road in the quarterfi nal round.
Despite a rash of season-ending injuries to key players, the Pioneers persevered to a 9-9-1 record in 2010. A 1-0 over me upset
of second-seeded Carson-Newman on the road in the SAC quarterfi nals propelled Tusculum to the SAC semifi nals for the 10th me
since joining the conference full- me in 1999.
Tusculum returned to prominence during the 2009 season, pos ng a 15-5-3 record en route to the program’s fi h NCAA Tournament
appearance. Joy guided the Pioneers to the program’s 12th straight winning season, including Tusculum’s fi rst-ever win over 2007 na onal champion Tampa. The Pioneers
posted a 6-2 record in SAC play, fi nishing second in the conference behind Carson-Newman while advancing to the semifi nal round of the SAC Tournament.
The Pioneers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament a er their semifi nal appearance in the SAC Tournament, defea ng conference foe Newberry 2-1 in the
opening round before falling to host and archrival Carson-Newman 1-0 in the second round. Three Pioneers earned All-Region honors, while junior midfi elder Courtney Turner
was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America Team for the second me in her career.
The Pioneers posted their 11th consecu ve winning season in 2008 with a 10-9-1 record, fi nishing fi h in the SAC standings with a 4-4 mark in conference play. Tusculum
received a total of 14 individual honors, including Danielle Tanner who was named SAC Player of the Year for the fi rst me in program history. Tanner was also tabbed as the
Daktronics All-Southeast Region Player of the Year while becoming the fi rst player in school history to record back-to-back 20-goal seasons.
His 2007 squad posted a 15-7 worksheet facing one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Pioneers made their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, earning
the top seed in the Southeast Region. The Pioneers won six of their last eight matches to advance to the Regional
fi nals before falling at No. 6 Columbus State. TC fi nished the year ranked No. 14 in the country, marking the third straight
season Tusculum has ended the year na na onally ranked. Three players earned All-Region honors, while Turner was named
to the NSCAA/NCAA II All-America Team.
In 2006, the Pioneers didn’t claim the SAC Championship or SAC Tournament tle for the fi rst me in seven years.
But Tusculum made its strongest na na onal postseason run in school history, pos pos ng regional wins over Armstrong Atlan Atlan c
State University and Carson-Newman College to claim the 2006 NCAA II Southeast Region Championship and advance to
the NCAA Elite Eight for the fi rst me in school history. Tusculum’s No. 8 NSCAA/NCAA II na na onal ranking was the best
lis lis ng at the end of a season in school history. Tusculum ended the year 14-3-3. Three players garnered All-Region accolades,
while defender Ashley Moreira was named to the NSCAA/NCAA II All-America Team.
Joy’s 2005 Pioneer squad concluded the season with a 12-6-2 record and a No. 18 na onal ranking in the fi nal
NSCAA/NCAA II poll. TC earned its second NCAA Tournament berth and was the top seed and host for the Southeast
Regional. The squad also captured its fourth Food Lion SAC Tournament championship. Five Pioneer players were named
to the All-South Atlan Atlan c Conference Team, while two players earned All-Region recogni recogni on.
In 2004, Tusculum concluded the season with a 14-4-1 overall record and a 6-1 SAC mark, which ed the Pioneers
with eventual NCAA Final Four par par cipant Carson-Newman atop the fi nal league standings. When the campaign came to
a close, TC had faced fi ve Top 25 opponents in a total of six matches, pos pos ng a 3-1-1 record in those contests.
In Joy’s debut season in 1997, the Pioneers showed marked improvement with a 10-11-1 record. They followed
with a 13-7-2 mark in 1998. A A er a sluggish slu 2-4 start, Tusculum won 13 of its last 15 matches en route to a 15-6 showing in
1999. Included in that that tally was a 6-2 record and a third place fi nish in TC’s fi rst season of South Atlan Atlan c Conference play.
The 2000 campaign was a new season and a new century for the Pioneers and what a year it was. The Pioneers
recorded recorded an impressive 19-3 record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in league play while capturing the SAC regular season
and tournament tles. TC outscored the tournament opposi opposi on by a 21-0 margin and became only the second SAC
The Joy Family
Kathy and Mike
squad to to win both tles outright in a season and the fi rst to do so since 1991. The 2000 team smashed the record books
by establishing or matching 23 team and individual school records, 11 SAC records and one NCAA Division II record.
Joy’s 2001 team took over where the 2000 team le off . The Pioneers captured both the regular season and conference
tournament championships for a second consecu ve season, fi nishing with a 16-2-3 overall record and 5-1-1 mark in confer-
ence play. Tusculum became the fi rst school in SAC history to win back-to-back outright regular season and tournament tles.
2012 Tusculum Women’s Soccer -- 13
The Pioneers fought through another challenging regular-season schedule to fi nish in a e for third place in the South Atlan c
Conference in 2011. Tusculum wrapped up the 2011 season with a 10-7-2 overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in the SAC, good for a share
of third place with Anderson and Newberry.
Other than a fi ve-game winning streak from Sept. 21 through Oct. 8, the Pioneers scuffl ed to fi nd consistency throughout the season.
The Pioneers alternated wins and losses for their fi rst six matches, including losses to na onally-ranked Columbus State (2-1) and
Armstrong Atlan c State (5-1). The win streak came to an abrupt end with a 5-0 loss at Wingate on Oct. 11, a setback that led to four
straight winless matches including two double-over me losses and a e.
Junior Tramicka James stepped to the forefront in wins over Catawba and Carson-Newman, scoring the game-winner with 18
seconds le in a 2-1 win over the Indians and ne ng her 100th career point with an assist in a 3-0 win at Carson Newman. Tusculum
nearly pulled off a huge upset in their regular-season fi nale, taking a 1-0 lead into the second half against fi h-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne
before the Bears scored two quick tallies to escape with a 2-1 win.
Pioneer head coach Mike Joy also reached a milestone in his squad’s victory over Carson-Newman, collec ng his 200th victory as head
coach at Tusculum in a 15-year career at the school. Joy has a 200-91-21 record with the Pioneers and a 286-116-26 mark through 20
years as a collegiate head coach.
In all, 12 of the Pioneers’ 19 matches were decided by either one goal or went to over me. Remarkably, Tusculum trailed at half-
me just once all season, in a match that ended in a 2-2 e at Young Harris on Oct. 13. Three of the Pioneers’ seven losses came in
double over me, and the Pioneers were shut out in defeat just twice all season.
Tusculum defended its home turf in fi ne fashion, compiling a 6-2 record at Pioneer Field and outscoring the visitors by a margin of 18-
9.
James lived up to the focus placed on her entering her junior season, leading the SAC and ranking among the NCAA Division II
leaders in goals (15) and points (34). In her 61-match career, James has ne ed 43 goals and dished out 16 assists for 102 points to rank
third on the Pioneer career scoring list.
Support for James in the off ensive department came from junior Kim Brown, who scored six goals, and senior Michelle Meade who
fi nished with four goals and a pair of assists for 10 points. Sophomore Amy Neltner stepped forward in the closing stages of the season,
collec ng a goal and two assists for four points in 19 matches.
The Pioneer midfi eld was led by freshman Jana Linke, who stepped in to start all 19 matches and score three goals, including a pair
of game-winners, while the defensive unit was paced by sophomore Amy Morford, senior Jessica Lee and junior Kourtney Kavic.
Freshman Marissa Williams was a key part of the Pioneer defensive eff ort, star ng 18 matches and pos ng a 1.22 goals against average
and a .816 save percentage. Williams led NCAA Division II in saves for a por on of the season, and fi nished the regular season with 102
stops and seven shutouts.
TUSCULUM COLLEGE
TUSCULUM HISTORY
Tusculum College is the oldest college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the na on.
In addi on, Tusculum is the oldest coeduca onal ins tu on affi liated with the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) and an early na onal pioneer in the admission of women. Tusculum
accepted women students early in its history, and it is notable that by the turn of the 20th
century more than half of its students were women.
The roots of Tusculum College are buried deep in early American fron er history.
In 1794, George Washington was president of a young country and the state of Tennessee
was s ll two years away from becoming a reality. In what is now East Tennessee,
Hezekiah Balch and Samuel Doak, Presbyterian ministers educated at the College of New
Jersey (now Princeton University), were ministering to the pioneers of what was the southwestern
fron er of the United States. They also desired to meet the educa onal needs
of these Scots-lrish se lers. Doak and Balch were visionaries ul mately seeking the same
goals through the rival colleges they established.
Tusculum College as it now exists descends from two schools. The fi rst, Greeneville
College, was chartered in September 1794 by the General Assembly of the Territory of the
United States South of the Ohio River, and established by Hezekiah Balch. Samuel Doak and
his son Samuel Witherspoon Doak founded the second as Tusculum Academy in 1818.
Tusculum Academy operated in a log cabin adjacent to the present site of Tusculum
College. When the academy became Tusculum College in 1844, Andrew Johnson, who was
to become 17th President of the United States, was one of its trustees.
A merger in 1868 formed Greeneville and Tusculum College. In 1908, Greeneville and
Tusculum College merged with Washington College, crea ng Washington and Tusculum College. This union dissolved in 1912, and thus evolved modern-day Tusculum
College. The College received formal accredita on by the Southern Associa on of Colleges and Schools 15 years later.
The College takes its name from the ancient Roman town where the great statesman and educator Cicero had an academy at his villa. Cicero taught what are now
called the liberal arts. They actually were cons tuted by the prac ces a ci zen must develop to par cipate eff ec vely in leading his or her community - to play a vital
role in civic aff airs.
TUSCULUM ACADEMICS
As a Civic Arts ins tu on, Tusculum College prepares students to be eff ec ve ci zens, recognizing that they will need prac cal wisdom to par cipate in communi es
and enrich life me experiences.
Tusculum’s academic calendar is diff erent from all but three other colleges in the country. The academic year is divided into two semesters and our students take
four 3 1/2 week courses each semester, totaling eight courses for the year. Classes are taught one at a me, with a four-day break in between. Three 3 1/2 week summer
sessions are also off ered. This allows our students to complete course requirements for the baccalaureate degree in four calendar years.
Our unique Civic Arts program is being used as a model for other colleges and universi es that seek to promote community, responsibility, and civic development.
The Carnegie Founda on for the Advancement of Teaching has recognized Tusculum as one of about a dozen schools (including Duke University and the University of
Notre Dame) with a strong commitment to those ideals.
As part of our emphasis on service-learning, we ask students to assess the needs of the community and complete a project to address those needs. Beyond helping
key popula ons, Tusculum students gain valuable experience in solving problems, apprecia ng diff erences, and working with others.
Tusculum College is a learning community where students and faculty members spend concentrated blocks of me together exploring important areas of knowledge,
developing and refi ning thinking and communica on skills, wrestling with the me-
less controversial issues that characterize the human condi condi on, and applying themselves
to the prac prac cal solu solu on of problems.
Whether in the tradi tradi onal on-campus Bachelor of Arts programs or in the evening
Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts programs for working adult-students, Tusculum
College’s dis dis nc nc ve academic calendar lets students concentrate on learning one subject
at a me. It’s a tradi tradi on grounded in the belief that we best realize the poten poten al of each
individual when faculty members and students work closely together with the ul ul mate
aim of enriching the lives of our students and preparing them to contribute posi posi vely to
their communi communi es.
For many tradi tradi onal students, an ini ini al reason for choosing Tusculum is our focused
calendar, calendar, which allows students to take one course at a me.
For others, its our dis dis nc nc ve programs of study, from specialized areas such as Athle Athle c
Training, Business Administra Administra on, and Museum Studies to strong arts and sciences areas
such as Biology, English, and Psychology.
Tusculum is well known throughout East Tennessee for the eff ec ec veness of its Teacher
Educa Educa on programs. Students are well prepared for careers in early childhood and elementary
educa educa on, in several several secondary educa educa on subject areas, in K-12 programs in
Physical Educa Educa on and Visual Arts, and in Special Educa Educa on. But what o o en seals prospec-
ve students’ decisions to join Tusculum’s community is the people.
Tusculum a a racts topfl ight professors for the same reason that we a a ract students: small
classes with close interac interac on between professors and students, the focused calendar
which allows concentrated study, and a Civic Arts curriculum that emphasizes community.
Our professors are mo vated and mo va ng. Excited and exci ng. Whatever the major, you’ll fi nd that Tusculum’s academics are innova ve, and that our faculty
is commi ed to the success of our students.
THE TUSCULUM CAMPUS
Located in Greeneville, Tenn., Tusculum College lies in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains between Knoxville and the Tri-Ci es (Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport).
Our wooded 190-acre campus has over 25 buildings, nine of which are listed on the Na onal Register of Historic Places. The Albert Columbus Tate Library, one
of our Na onal Historic Sites, was built in 1910. The library is experiencing a major mul -million dollar renova on and expansion that will more than double the size
of the current library facility, bringing our library space to 34,467 square feet. The Tate Library previously encompassed 12,000 square feet, and is incorporated into the
expanded and renovated building.
We also have two on-campus museums, one holding archives with materials da ng to the College’s beginnings. The Andrew Johnson Presiden al Museum and
Library includes the Charles Coffi n Collec on containing materials from the Collegeís original library, the Andrew Johnson Library containing books, papers, and memorabilia
from the 17th President of the United States, and the College Archives containing documents related to the history of Tusculum since its founding.
Tusculum’s loca on is convenient to shopping and entertainment, and our students enjoy access to such recrea onal opportuni es as backpacking, hiking, whitewater
ra ing, fi shing and snow skiing. The city of Greeneville and Greene County have a combined popula on of 65,000. Knoxville and the Tri-Ci es are within a 70-mile
radius of the campus.
