REFLECTIONS FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD AND CEO
Strathmore is about making a real difference in the lives of
real people of all ages and cultures. That is the standard by
which we want to be measured and this past year is the story
of making good on that pledge. Don’t take our word for it.
Just ask the people touched by our programs.
Strathmore commissioned a remarkable new work called Free to
Sing about the first African-American Opera Company in the
nation which was born right here in Washington, D.C. It played
to a sold-out house, but more importantly it celebrated the
untold story of people in our community. Ask those audience
members if that event changed their sense of their creative legacy.
Now in their fourth year, the Strathmore Student Concerts for
10,000 Montgomery County Public School Second Graders
featuring the National Philharmonic continued with the
addition of another set of concerts for 10,000 Fifth Graders
featuring the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Ask those
20,000 elementary kids to name the sections of the orchestra
or how a composer creates music.
Strathmore doubled the number of education programs and
tripled the number of educational participants in its classes, in
part with a $1 million endowment for educating students from
underserved communities. Ask those kids how they felt about
spending Spring Break week at Strathmore building puppets
instead of staying home alone in front of the television.
Strathmore welcomed 160 shows and over 250,000 audience
members to its beautiful and acoustically acclaimed Concert
Hall over the year for its performances and those by its artistic
partners. Strathmore alone featured over 40 concerts,
FINE ART HIGHLIGHTS
The Colored Pencil Society of America brought their major
annual national exhibition, held in a different city each year, to
the Mansion at Strathmore at the beginning of FY08. The
exhibition, juried by Ross Merrill of the National Gallery of Art,
dazzled patrons with its “photo realistic portraits” (The
Gazette), informing viewers that the colored pencil media is
sophisticated and innovative—not the child’s play that many
associate with colored pencil drawings. One piece by James
Mateer “look[s] as if the glass is sweating actual water
droplets in all its effervescent glory.” (The Gazette)
Andrew Dold, “All is Not Lost,” from the Colored Pencil Society of America
In the winter, Hand-Made: A Washington Sculptors Group
Exhibition of Sculpture and Drawings was featured in the
Gudelsky Gallery Suite. Emerging curators Meg Ferris of
American University’s Graduate Art History Program and
Zeynep Öz of the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland
Institute College of Art brought together a collection of works
that deconstructed the political, economic and aesthetic
nuances of being “hand-made.” An exciting installation,
entitled “There’s a Fragile Structure Between Us” by Magnolia
Laurie fascinated viewers with its construction being made
completely out of flexible drinking straws.
In May and June, viewers of all ages, but especially children,
were enthralled with Elbert Roberson’s “Rock Creek Leo,”
a large three dimensional lion sculpture that the artist had
worked on for over 20 years. The work was part of
Strathmore’s Common Bond exhibition, our bi-annual show
featuring work by local African-American artists.

An important facet of Strathmore’s mission is serving the
community of local residents, local artists and local musicians.
Several programs presented during FY08 demonstrated the
strength of our conviction to this important work.
In the Invitational Gallery of the Mansion, Strathmore hosted
the annual Understanding Diversity Through the Arts
exhibition. The exhibition showcased artistic pieces created by
Montgomery County middle school students representing their
culture and heritage.
Strathmore’s Artist in Residence program continues to serve
six local emerging musicians per year with the opportunity to
develop an audience in the area, perfect their performances,
create an educational program, attend professional
development workshops, and premiere a new work
commissioned by Strathmore.
For local residents, Strathmore offered several programs and
presentations designed to serve our large and very diverse
community:
• In addition to the annual Strathmore Student Concerts for
2nd Graders, in which every Montgomery County Public
Schools (MCPS) 2nd Grade student in the county attends
a performance by the National Philharmonic, in FY08
Strathmore added a concert series for every MCPS 5th Grader
featuring the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Over 20,000
Montgomery County Public Schools students experienced
the thrill of the orchestra in one of the best acoustical
environments and most beautiful concert halls in the U.S.
Local artist Jason Swain demonstrates his craft at Discover Strathmore
2008.
• During FY08 Strathmore became the first arts
organization in the D.C. metro area that allowed patrons
to Select Their Exact Seats when ordering tickets online.
• The free Discover Strathmore open house festival
celebrating the arts and artists of Washington, D.C. hosted
over 7,000 for a day full of performances, workshops and
artistic demonstrations.
• Strathmore presented several performances reflecting the
diversity of our community, including Goombay: The
Caribbean Experience; the Celtic music of Maggie Sansone;
Chinese recitalists Bin Huang, Sa Chen and Wendy Law;
State Symphony of Mexico; Tango Buenos Aires; Moiseyev
Dance Company; Mariza; Angélique Kidjo; Highland, Heath
and Holler; the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Awards;
An Evening of Indian Music with Shafaatullah Khan; Marian
Anderson String Quartet; Mayuko Kamio; Sara Daneshpour;
and The New Klezmer Quintet with Ramón Tasat.
• PBS children’s favorite Arthur visited and performed for
children receiving treatment and their families at NIH
Children’s Inn.
• Strathmore Means Value—local residents enjoy no ticket
fees, free parking, and a wide range of ticket prices, starting
