there are specific moments in time when lives are 

forever changed. these moments happen every day at 

the QEII Health Sciences centre. Situated in the heart 

of downtown Halifax, the QEII takes care of atlantic 

canadians who are in need of health care. the QEII 

serves as a local community hospital for immediate 

care and emergency services, as well as a specialized 

care centre for the Maritime and atlantic provinces 

for areas like heart surgery, cancer treatment, 

neurosurgery and organ transplantation. 

In addition to providing the most advanced care 

available today, the QEII focuses on the future 

of health care as a robust teaching and research 

centre making lifesaving discoveries. Beyond the 

health centre walls, the QEII has various programs 

and services embedded throughout nova Scotia that 

are improving the health of our community.

Julie 

Lyons 

Julie Lyons laid anxiously in her hospital bed 

waiting for the only thing that could save her – 

a new heart. After years of health complications, 

her 55-year-old heart could no longer fuel 

her active lifestyle. On the fifth day of 

waiting, a matching donor was 

found and Julie awoke from 

surgery feeling better than 

she had in years. And 

better yet, she could 

feel life flowing 

through her body 

again.

Last winter, I watched them build the oval, thinking I’d never be on it. 

Dr. Louise Parker 

with the highest rates of cancer in the 

country, the disease hits Atlantic Canadians 

harder than anyone else. dr. Louise Parker, 

the Canadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia 

division Endowed Chair in Population 

Cancer Research, is gathering data to 

discover why our numbers are so high 

and what we can do to reduce them. This 

study, called Atlantic Path, is part of the 

largest cancer research project to ever be 

conducted in Canada and is still recruiting 

participants. Get involved and make a true 

impact on cancer research and the health

It wasn’t long ago that organ transplants 

were dreams of the future. But with 

research, they became a life-saving 

reality for people like Julie Lyons. with 

the support from Hoffman la Roche, RBC 

Financial Group and the QEII Foundation, 

an endowed chair in transplantation has 

been funded to further research into 

successful transplantation procedures. 

The same life-saving reality can happen 

with cancer cures. Today’s unknowns are 

tomorrow’s discoveries and researchers 

at the QEII are uncovering them so we 

can enjoy longer and healthier lives.

RECOGNIZING 

yOUR ANGEL IN 

ACTION AT THE QEII 

Angels in Action are everywhere at the 

QEII. They’re the parking attendant 

who tells you a joke while you leave an 

appointment, the physician who assures 

you everything will be Ok, the volunteer 

who brings you cookies during chemo 

and the nurse who is always gentle while 

taking blood. They’re the people who 

deliver outstanding care to patients and 

when Michelle davey met dr. Oxner at 

the QEII, she had just learned that her 

husband Robbie, 30 at the time, had 

three tumours on his spine. dr. Oxner told 

the daveys that he would remove as much 

of the tumours as he could and repair 

Robbie’s vertebrae. 

“This was the first time someone had 

mentioned surgery and that something 

could be done,” explains Michelle. “It 

was the first time I stopped crying since 

we left home and I thanked God for 

sending us an angel.” 

dr. Oxner successfully removed most 

of the tumours, which were later 

confirmed as thyroid cancer that had 

spread. Five years later, although he’s

their families and they are recognized 

as Angels in Action, by staff and grateful 

patients who want to acknowledge them 

with a donation to the QEII. 

Since the QEII Foundation program 

began in 2009, over 1,400 extraordinary 

health care providers within the QEII 

have received their wings. Orthopaedic 

surgeon dr. william Oxner is one of them. 

doing much better, Robbie’s battle with 

cancer continues. The daveys credit dr. 

Oxner and all staff and physicians they 

encountered at the QEII for keeping their 

family strong during their difficult time. 

“dr. Oxner has become a part of our 

family. He’s watched our little girl, Nina, 

grow up during our visits to his office 

every few months.” The daveys were 

more than thrilled to recognize dr. Oxner 

as their Angel in Action. 

Thanks to the incredible care he’s 

received, Robbie is home with his family 

and enjoying the everyday moments that 

remind him how happy he is to be alive. 





Lucille White held her husband Terry’s hand for 

all of his 43 radiation therapy treatments for 

tongue cancer. When he was first diagnosed, 

Lucille found it hard to even say the “c word” 

when telling their three children that Daddy had 

cancer. The strength and closeness of their 

family is what remains strong in Lucille’s mind 

when she lets her thoughts wander back to the 

overwhelming days of her husband’s diagnosis 

and treatment. Because Terry recovered, 

Lucille gets to enjoy a happy ending, filled with 

adventures of hiking and geocaching 

with the love of her life.

Dr. John Sapp 

Additional equipment and improvements 

to technology have helped cardiac 

electrophysiologists like dr. John Sapp treat 

patients sooner. Thanks to a second lab - 

The Beth Medjuck Heart Rhythm Laboratory, 

funded by Ralph and Shirlee Medjuck - 

dr. Sapp has drastically cut wait times for 

patients requiring surgery to fix abnormal 

heart rhythms from 18 months to three.

Having the best equipment and the latest 

technology is an essential component to 

saving lives. The patients that are helped 

by staff and physicians, like dr. Sapp, 

rely on their caregivers to have the right 

tools to provide the best care possible. 

The radiation treatment equipment used 

to save Lucille white’s husband was vital 

to his survival. That’s why the Foundation 

is continuing to raise funds for new 

radiation treatment equipment through 

our Cancer Never Waits campaign.

“ there were so many times when I thought 

I would never see the wedding happen. 

LEAVING A GIFT 

IN yOUR wILL 

wallace Murray may have lost his battle 

with cancer, but today he’s helping 

cancer patients like Jeannie Murrin win 

theirs - through the gift he left in his will 

to the QEII Foundation to benefit health 

care for future generations. 

while wallace was undergoing cancer 

treatment, he realized there was no place 

in the health centre to escape from the 

stresses of treatment. It was his dream 

to create a warm and welcoming common 

At the Sunshine Room, Jeannie Murrin 

found what she was missing – someone 

to talk to who understood what it was like 

to battle cancer. 

“My family has been wonderful, but it’s 

not the same as talking to somebody 

who’s been through it. It made a big 

difference to have somewhere to go 

where I could talk to other patients.” 

Jeannie has also stopped by the room for 

reiki and massage therapy treatments, 

one of several services provided by a 

11 

area for cancer patients and their 

families. He knew he wouldn’t have the 

opportunity to visit such a place, but he 

wanted to ensure future patients would. 

That’s why he left a gift in his will to help 

create the Sunshine Room. 

Located on the 11 th floor of the Victoria 

General building, the Sunshine Room is 

a bright and cheery place where patients 

and their families can forget they’re in a 

hospital, even if it is only for a little while. 

It’s a place that makes Jeannie Murrin 

feel better.

the Sunshine Room does resemble a 

spa, with a hair dressing station and a 

multipurpose area for yoga and tai chi. 

With radiation and chemotherapy 

behind her, Jeannie is eager for her 

hair to grow in and for her oldest son’s 

wedding this summer. 

Whenever I start thinking about watching him get married, I start to cry.

Feltmate 

“

Grant Feltmate was coaching his son’s 

high school basketball practice when 

the pain ripped across his chest and the 

nausea struck. He was having a heart 

attack. An ambulance was called and the 

58-year-old was rushed to the QEII for 

emergency surgery where a team of staff 

and physicians were waiting to save his life. 

Within a matter of hours, the blockage in 

his heart had been removed and Grant was 

on his way to making a full recovery. Today, 

Grant is back on the basketball court and 

enjoying time with his three children. 

I feel healthier and better than ever. and above that, 

Dr. Michael dunbar 

Orthopaedic surgeon dr. Michael dunbar is 

on the cutting edge of improving prosthetic 

joint replacements for patients who 

require hip and knee implants. His work, 

and the work of the entire orthopaedic 

team at the QEII, is helping patients 

improve their mobility and live their life 

with freedom from pain and discomfort.

FUNdING 

Often, donors to the QEII Foundation 

make a gift to the area of greatest need. 

These gifts are then used to help fund 

various care items throughout the QEII, 

from major research initiatives and 

medical equipment to comfortable chairs 

for family members to sit at a bedside. 

These much needed items are funded 

by the QEII Foundation through various 

grants and bursary programs, like the 

Gillian MacMichael Endowment Fund, 

the Rehabilitation Program Endowment 

Fund, and the Comfort and Care program. 

Sometimes it can be the little things 

that help make a patient’s journey as 

comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Imagine being diagnosed with breast cancer 

as a mother of young children and having 

the fear that they may grow up without their 

mom. Then try to imagine worrying about 

having the money to get transportation to 

chemotherapy or to pay a babysitter while 

having treatment. It seems unbearable but 

social workers at the QEII Health Sciences 

Centre hear these stories every day. 

dr. Therese O’Neill is a private psychiatrist 

in Halifax, and a mother of three, who 

treats predominantly female patients. 

About five years ago she became aware of 

how distressing a breast cancer diagnosis 

is, particularly for young mothers and 

especially for those in financial need. 

This past december, dr. O’Neill organized 

a grassroots fundraiser inviting friends 

and neighbours, mostly mothers, to her 

home and asked they bring a donation. 

The money raised went directly to 

mothers being treated at the cancer 

centre and to help alleviate the burden of 

financial distress. 

Learning the reality that some mothers couldn’t afford transportation to chemotherapy

Eliminating financial worries for a 

patient and their family helps to combat 

difficulties like depression, which can 

lead to negative effects on recovery. 

dr. O’Neill knows that people often give 

generously to breast cancer fundraisers 

and the research done has improved 

outcomes significantly. But she strongly 

believes if people were aware of the 

unmet financial gap, they would also give 

to help mothers in need.

Patients and families visiting the 

QEII are fortunate to benefit from 

community fundraisers that support 

many areas of the health centre, 

from patient care to research. These 

fundraisers are created and organized
