Maribeth Gallagher wins international and national recognition

Maribeth Gallagher lives those 

words daily, gently coaxing 

responses from dementia patients 

using music and anything else 

that is familiar and comforting to 

their hearts. Singing You Are My 

Sunshine. Reciting The Lord’s Prayer. 

Recalling a favorite scent. 

“Our job at this vulnerable time in 

their lives is to sing and celebrate 

their songs every morning, noon 

and night for the rest of their days,” said Gallagher, 

director of Hospice of the Valley’s dementia program. 

It is this standard that has earned Gallagher international 

and national recognition for her leadership providing 

exceptional end-of-life care for dementia patients. In 

May, she was named Program Manager of the Year by 

the Visiting Nurse Associations of America at its annual 

convention in Phoenix. In March, the International 

Journal of Palliative Nursing honored Gallagher with the 

first-place award in the “non-cancer” category at an 

awards dinner in London. 

A psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate in 

nursing practice, Gallagher has led HOV’s dementia 

program since 2006. The team includes Amy McLean, 

nurse practitioner; Rebekah Wilson, social worker, and 

Gillian Hamilton, MD. 

Before arriving at what she calls her “true calling” at 

HOV, Gallagher started her career as a nurse. She was 

living in San Francisco with roommates who had heard 

her sing, and someone suggested she start performing.

That ignited what would become a 30-year rock ’n’ roll 

career that took her from the streets of Haight Ashbury 

to stages across the United States, Europe and Asia. As 

she performed in places with 

language barriers and vast 

cultural differences, she saw 

universal responses: music could 

dissolve differences, change body 

language, ease expressions. She 

never forgot that. 

Another experience also made a 

life-changing impact: her motherin-law’s 

dementia journey. “It was 

an eye-opening experience,” she 

said. “There was a lot to learn 

and it was very emotional.” 

Gallagher decided to return to school at Arizona State 

University and set her sights on working with dementia 

patients. She joined HOV in 2005 and soon thereafter 

became dementia program director. 

Today, the dementia team educates agency staff, 

community healthcare providers and the public about 

non-invasive, non-pharmacological ways to maximize 

quality of life for dementia patients. They teach 

caregivers how to make meaningful connections with 

persons with dementia when words no longer work. 

Comforting touches, soothing scents, enjoyable tastes 

and the sounds of music are centerpieces of that work. 

Of the 4,000 patients the agency cares for each day, 

about 12 percent have a primary diagnosis of dementia; 

many more have dementia as a secondary diagnosis. 

To Gallagher, a common thread runs through all efforts 

to provide the best palliative dementia care: “Know the 

person with dementia, and always reflect back how they 

are loved and respected.”

Hospice of the Valley’s charity care expenses continue to grow—totaling 

$13 million in 2011, a 17 percent increase over the previous year. We deeply 

appreciate the generosity of our donors. You ensure we’re able to care for 

everyone who comes to our door, regardless of ability to pay. Last year, 

community support totaled $10.1 million.

To advance our mission to serve all, we have entered into a partnership with 

Circle the City, which has cared for the homeless population since 2008. Circle 

the City founder Sister Adele O’Sullivan has long sought a medical respite 

center for homeless people recently discharged from the hospital who need a 

safe place to stay. In support of that goal, Hospice of the Valley purchased the 

building for the 50-bed center—333 W. Indian School Road in Phoenix—and is leasing it to Circle the City. Hospice 

patients needing respite will have access to beds. The center will be staffed and operated by Circle the City and open 

to patients in July. 

We are grateful to those who donated a total of $75,000 to support this partnership at the “Fund a Need” program 

of AAHA! An Auction of Heirlooms and Art, held March 3 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. Net revenue for 

AAHA! totaled $260,000. Thanks to you, the neediest among us will have loving care and a roof over their heads.

Awards and recognition 

The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce 

awarded HOV the IMPACT award in May in the 

“Community Champion” category for “giving back to 

the local community; fostering employee growth and 

development; promoting a positive work environment or 

high performance among employees; and (maintaining) 

community investment and employee engagement in 

charitable activities.” u Jonathon Etou, LPN, was 

recognized in March as the Certified Hospice and 

Palliative Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year by the 

National Board of Certified Hospice and Palliative 

Care Nurses. u HOV was named one of the Valley’s 

Healthiest Employers in March by the Phoenix 

Business Journal. u HOV ranked 82 nd in The Arizona 

Republic 100, an annual survey that ranks companies 

by workforce size. HOV employs 1,900. u HOV teen 

volunteer Nhi Van, a junior at Maryvale High School, 

was given the Youth award in April at the Governor’s 

Volunteer Service Award luncheon. u HOV volunteer 

Charlotte Neptune was honored in March with a “Pay 

It Forward” award from CBS 5 News for creating 80

Excellent end-of-life care critical to individuals’ and nation’s well being 

Dying well—pain-free, at 

home, with dignity and loving 

support—is what most of 

us want, said Ira Byock, MD, 

one of the nation’s foremost 

experts on end-of-life care. 

But even now—35 years 

after the modern-day hospice 

movement began, with 

5,000 hospice programs

nationwide—it’s still not what 

most of us get. While surveys 

show most people would prefer to die comfortably at 

home, about 70 percent die in institutions, with 20 

percent of those dying in intensive care units, Byock said. 

America has reached a fork in the road about end-oflife 

care. Either the nation continues escalating the 

expensive “disease-treatment system” that imposes 

increasing burdens of illness on people with life-limiting 

diseases—threatening to bankrupt Medicare—or 

patients should be routinely given the option to die a 

natural death at home surrounded by people they love, 

Byock said. 

“We Baby Boomers need to get back in our game,” he 

said. “We transformed the birth process, making it a 

personal experience, not a medical event…The same 

transformation needs to take place at end of life. It’s 

time to take it back.” 

Byock spoke May 1 to 225 community physicians and 

healthcare leaders at a dinner at the Arizona Biltmore 

Resort & Spa sponsored by Hospice of the Valley. Byock 

is the author of the recently-released book The Best 

Care Possible. He is director of palliative medicine at the 

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New 

Hampshire, and professor, Dartmouth Medical Center. 

Most Medicare spending goes to beneficiaries in their last 

year of life, typically for acute care in hospital settings. 

Increased utilization of hospice and palliative care would 

bring medical practice into alignment with many patients’ 

goals; it also would reign in healthcare costs. 

Byock cited the following barriers: 

§ Reluctance to think and talk about death. Patients, 

families and doctors don’t want to address the 

inevitable, so they continue pursuing treatment. 

§ Polarized politics: death squads; “pro-life;” assisted 

suicide; rationed healthcare. Political and healthcare 

leaders shy from end-of-life issues for fear of 

igniting opposition. 

§ Either/or choices for Medicare. Currently people 

with late-stage chronic illnesses must make a choice 

between Medicare coverage for hospice or curative 

treatment. The better option would be Medicare 

coverage for a continuum of care involving both. 

§ Ill-prepared physicians. Most medical schools 

don’t prepare physicians for having compassionate 

conversations with patients about end-of-life. 

The nation’s policy makers need to make macro system 

changes, starting with the current reimbursement 

system that rewards treatment. Hospices need to offer 

more programs such as HOV’s Arizona Palliative Home 

Care. Community and political leaders should address 

end-of-life care rather than hide from it. Physicians 

should love their patients, treating them with the same 

TLC that they would a family member, Byock said. 

For individuals, Byock offered this poignant advice: 

“Get a family.” The family could be neighbors, a faith 

community, friends who watch out for each another 

or the traditional model. “The best assisted living 

arrangement I’ve seen is an old married couple,” he said.

Jim Otterbeck is raising the bar for corporate investment 

and personal commitment to Hospice of the Valley. 

As chairman and chief executive officer of OnePoint 

Patient Care, HOV’s pharmacy provider, Otterbeck 

brings unwavering support to the agency’s three major 

fundraisers. OnePoint has been supporting AAHA! An 

Auction of Heirlooms and Art since 1993 and has been 

the event’s biggest sponsor since 2007. The company 

also sponsors Off the Vine and the Cigna Pro-Am Golf 

Tournament, contributing more than $230,000 through 

event sponsorships.

Hoselton drives Cigna Pro-Am 

Jay Hoselton is the driving force behind the Cigna Pro- 

Am Golf Tournament, a major fundraiser for Hospice of 

the Valley. As chairman for 14 years, his work has helped 

raise more than $625,000 to benefit patients and families. 

The popular event supports the agency’s programs and 

services as well as fulfilling Hoselton’s personal desire 

to help make a difference. “It’s something that I can do 

every year to feel that I am contributing back to the 

community,” he said. 

Hoselton first became involved as a player in 1998; 

the following year, he agreed to run the tournament. 

He launched it as a Pro-Am. Today, the tournament 

boasts a $10,000 purse and includes top players from 

OnePoint is the nation’s leading, locally-based hospice 

pharmacy. Otterbeck and Jeff Hohl, the company’s 

president and chief operating officer, also attend 

the fundraising events and bid on items. Otterbeck 

jokes that AAHA! is the sole source of the art he has 

purchased in recent years. A wine lover and golfer, he 

also enjoys Off the Vine and the golf tournament. 

“Hospice of the Valley is grateful to OnePoint for its 

steadfast commitment to improving quality of life for 

our patients and families,” said Susan Levine, executive 

director. “OnePoint is an exceptional corporate citizen.” 

Otterbeck is quick to deflect the spotlight, turning 

the focus back to HOV. He ticks off a long list of the 

agency’s attributes and innovative programs like Pet 

Connections, a favorite given his love of dogs. What 

impresses him most about HOV? “The commitment to 

patient care, independent of any economic return they 

have. That is unparalleled.”

director at Cushman & Wakefield; 

the father of two adult children and a pianist with 

the duo Jo Watson and the birdman. (Hoselton is the 

“birdman,” a play on his nickname Jaybird.) 

HOV’s commitment to serving patients regardless of 

ability to pay keeps Holselton engaged.

Helping Hand Fund makes magic happen 

Kevin Pratt-King was headed toward a career in 

architecture when an aggressive form of brain cancer 

changed everything for the young man. He quit his 

studies at Arizona State University, underwent surgeries 

and treatment, and was admitted to Hospice of the 

Valley’s service in January. 

Now life for Kevin and his wife Tashi is about the small 

pleasures, like going to a Broadway musical. In March, 

the couple experienced one of theatre’s best thanks to 

the tenacity of HOV staff and the Helping Hand Fund. 

Mimi Carrion-Loucks, clinical resource social worker, 

scored two impossible-to-get tickets to “Wicked” for 

$200, paid for by the fund. The couple enjoyed an evening 

at ASU Gammage and celebrated an early third wedding 

anniversary. Both longtime theatre buffs, they lost 

themselves in the amazing sets, music and performances. 

“Just to experience it washing over me, to forget about 

things for a while and enjoy it…It was a good way to 

spend an evening,” said Kevin, 27. “It was one of the 

best evenings I’ve had in a long, long time.” 

The Helping Hand Fund has been assisting patients and 

families since 1998, covering non-medical urgent needs 

such as overdue utility payments or funeral expenses 

and also granting special wishes like a hoped-for family 

getaway. In the past three years alone, the fund has paid 

out nearly $120,000. 

The fund is critical as charity expenses continue to grow, 

exceeding $1 million per month. Staff makes requests 

to clinical resource social workers, who can approve 

up to $500 in expenses. Any amount over that must be 

approved by the Fund committee. 

The Helping Hand Fund was established by HOV 

through a grant from the Oscar G. & Elsa S. Mayer 

Family Foundation. Several other donors also have 

been instrumental in 

supporting the fund, 

including the Stardust 

Foundation and Season 

for Sharing. 

Two annual events benefit

the fund as well. The Nina 

Pike-Garza Memorial Golf 

Tournament has raised more than $360,000 since 1994. 

HOV cared for Nina Pike-Garza; her brother Mike and 

niece Angel organize the popular fall tournament. In 

addition, the Helping Hand Run in Tempe has raised 

more than $22,000 since 2009. The run was started 

by Katrina Brumm, whose grandmother was on HOV’s 

service. She enlisted ASU’s business fraternity, Alpha 

Kappa Psi, which carries on the tradition. 

The fund fills patient needs big and small. A patient whose 

family was struggling financially received assistance to 

buy warm clothing—sweaters, long pants and slippers— 

so she could enjoy her favorite activity, an outdoor 

stroll. Another patient who has no local family members 

celebrated her 101st birthday with a cake and flowers. 

The daughter of another patient was struggling to make 

ends meet, caring for her mother and two children 

while working as much as possible. HOV was able to pay 

her water bill which alleviated her financial stress and 

gave her support at a critical time. 

“The Helping Hand Fund is just one more way for us to 

make our clients feel extra special,” said social worker 

Jill Chiurazzi. “Whether it’s a birthday cake or a warm 

sweater, it will always bring a smile to their face and ours.”

Teen just keeps on giving to Hospice of the Valley 

Karlee King, a teen volunteer at an inpatient hospice 

home, has dedicated a $300 cash award she won for her 

community service and academic achievement from 

Soroptimist International of Mesa to Hospice of the Valley. 

The graduate of Skyline High School in Mesa also was 

given a $300 scholarship to attend Northern Arizona 

University, where she plans to study biomedical science. 

Soroptimist is a service organization that advances 

women and girls. 

King was thrilled that Soroptimist gave her the 

opportunity to select a charity for the cash award. She 

said she couldn’t think of a more worthy organization 

than Hospice of the Valley. 

King has logged more than 140 hours as a volunteer at the 

East Mesa palliative care unit. She visits the PCU every

For Charlie, that meant decorating his heart with a 

bright rainbow and the words “I love you. I miss you 

dad.” For Skylar, it meant drawing a hummingbird atop 

a tree to remember her brother. For Lukas, it meant 

capturing all his dad’s favorite things: a truck and tools, 

storm clouds and stars.

children, teens and young adults cope with loss through 

sharing stories and experiences, as well as art, music 

and recreation. 

George created scenes showing all the things he and 

his father Larry loved to do like fishing and drinking 

slushies. Audra decided on a cheerful ocean scene in 

tribute to her father LaMont who used to live in Long 

Beach. Skylar chose the hummingbird because she 

believes her brother Logan sends the birds her way. 

“The pillow was really important to her,” said Skylar’s 

mother, Lori Patrick. “Every project she has done with 

New Song has been very impactful.”

Grants and gifts 

Hospice of the Valley extends our gratitude to: 

West Valley Lutheran Thrift Shop has contributed 

$6,000 a year to HOV since 2001, totaling $66,000. 

Founded in 1994, the thrift shop is an all-volunteer 

organization that has raised and distributed more 

than $5 million to charities and churches. HOV was 

selected because of the support extended to many of the 

organization’s members whose loved ones have died, said 

John Heilman, board member. The 12,000-square-foot 

thrift shop at 10737 W. Peoria Ave., Sun City, accepts 

donations of clothing, furniture, appliances, jewelry, 

books and household items. 

The Arizona Republic/12News “Season for 

Sharing” gave $30,000 to support the agency’s 11 th 

Hour Companion Program, which offers a supportive 

presence for families and patients nearing the end of life. 

“This Season for Sharing grant will enable us to expand 

our services to support more patients and their families 

through the recruitment and retention of 11 th Hour 

volunteers,” said Lynn Tolmachoff, program director. 

Knights of Columbus Father Patterson Council #3121 

has hosted an annual dinner/dance fundraiser for HOV 

over the last decade, raising more than $25,000. In 

2011, the event was named in memory of the council’s 

four-year Grand Master Richard Seminara, who died on 

HOV’s service. The 2012 event was the council’s largest 

yet, with 152 guests raising $4,375. Event co-chairs 

were Knights Troy Revelette and Jeremy Williams, sonin-law 

of the late Seminara. 

The State of Arizona awarded a $32,075 grant to make 

Gardiner Home more energy efficient. Gardiner Home 

was built in 1955 and acquired by the agency in 1994; it 

serves 10 patients. The palliative care unit is expected to 

realize about $5,000 in annual energy savings. 

Armstrong Family Foundation gave $15,000 to Arizona 

Palliative Home Care, a program of HOV, to conduct 

a four-month telehealth pilot project. Telehealth—the 

use of technology to deliver healthcare services at a 

distance—holds promise for improving quality of care 

and reducing healthcare costs. The foundation was 

established in 1996 by Jo-Ann and Jim Armstrong as a 

result of the success of JDA Software based in Tempe. 

Fiesta Bowl Charities awarded $10,000 to HOV’s 

Pediatric Program, which serves children with lifelimiting 

illnesses and their families. The money will 

be used to support the position of a child life specialist, 

who helps kids cope with stresses through play and 

conversation. HOV is the sole provider of pediatric hospice 

and palliative care in Maricopa County. The agency hopes 

to double the number of pediatric hospice and palliative 

care patients served in 2012, increasing to 160. 

Thunderbirds Charities gave $5,000 to New Song Center 

for Grieving Children, a bereavement program of HOV. 

The Phoenix Thunderbirds host the Waste Management 

Phoenix Open. Thunderbirds Charities is the nonprofit 

arm that distributes money to charitable causes. 

US Airways Wings for Hospice program provided 

an additional $5,000 to help reunite hospice families 

with limited resources, bringing the company’s total 

contribution to $14,000 since 2007. 

Carlson Wagonlit Travel in central Phoenix has given to 

HOV in many ways over the last 15 years. In February, 

a group volunteered at nearby Coronado Home, where 

they planted flowers, hauled trash, raked the grounds 

and helped install playground equipment. The team 

also regularly volunteers at the agency’s special events, 

including AAHA! An Auction of Heirlooms and Art. 

They hold bake sales, pancake breakfasts and lunches to 

raise money, more than $3,200 so far.
