confines of this modern and active
campus center.

Pomona empowers its students both in and out of the
classroom, providing the tools and support they need
in order to take advantage of the wide variety of
opportunities before them. Often, it is the students
themselves who are the catalysts for institutional
change—the sparks that ignite new academic
programs, clubs and activities.
Our location—within an hour of the Pacific Ocean, the Mojave Desert, the San
Gabriel Mountains and the city of Los Angeles—informs and shapes daily life at the
College. There aren’t many places in the world where you can ski in the morning,
play on the beach in the afternoon, and take in a major league baseball game or an
opera at night (not to mention the simple joy of wearing flip-flops in the middle of
February). But beyond the recreational and cultural possibilities, our location also
adds another dimension to the learning experience, with unequalled opportunities
for field study, community involvement and internships.
In the end, Pomona College students typically complete their studies in the
span of four years and go on to do remarkable things. In the sciences, in
government, in theatre and film, in medicine, business, law, and education, in social
movements and in the arts, Pomona graduates have a presence and an influence out
of all proportion to their numbers.
The College gate, built in 1914, bears an
engraved inscription from Pomona’s fourth president,
James A. Blaisdell: They only are loyal to this college
who, departing, bear their added riches in trust for
mankind. The College exists, the gate reminds us all,
not only to enrich the lives of its students, but also to
empower them to make a difference in the world.
