Dear Members, Donors, and Friends of the Museum,
As GRAM’s new Director and CEO, I would like to
extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude for your
support of the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
Your continued enthusiasm for GRAM makes such a
positive impact on cultural life throughout the
community. 2011 was a landmark year for the Museum,
with record-breaking attendance of over 319,000 guests!
This report documents highlights of the many
achievements reached in 2011 in the areas of exhibitions,
education, acquisitions, and finance.
Last spring, GRAM adopted a strategic plan and implemented initiatives to
enhance and improve all aspects of the Museum’s operations.
The areas of focus include:
• Financial sustainability
• Enhancing the collection and exhibition program
• Board engagement
• Implementing guest-centered Museum practices and providing
exemplary customer service
• Fostering a culture of leadership through collaboration
• Understanding and growing the Museum audience
As we work together to move the Museum forward, we are committed to building
stronger community engagement, more productive collaborative relationships, and
positioning GRAM as a cultural resource that meets the needs of a 21st century audience.
I truly value your partnership in this process and thank you for your continued support.
Dana Friis-Hansen
Director and CEO
In 2011, GRAM expanded Language Artists: Creature Connections, a program
created in collaboration with Kendall College of Art and Design and Grand Rapids Public
Schools, designed to enhance teaching and learning of challenging literacy concepts in the
third grade curriculum through school tours at GRAM.
The Art Museum received a National Endowment for the Arts Grant and a Matching Gift
from Farmers Insurance Group that enabled:
• Free school tours to Grand Rapids Public Schools third grade classes
GRPS serves the urban community, diverse in both culture and economic
background. Records show that as many as 89% of these third graders live
below the federal poverty level.
• Professional development
This is provided to Principals, Literacy Coaches, Classroom Teachers, and
Art Educators from Grand Rapids Public Schools.
Impact of Educational Programs
The Education Department engages guests through specialized
tours and gallery interpretive materials.
Later in 2011, a specialized tour, Gazing at GRAM, was created. This tour engages
guests who have been affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia, and traumatic brain injury.
Gazing at GRAM is patterned after the nationally recognized Meet Me at MOMA
(Museum of Modern Art, NY) and was developed in collaboration with the Spectrum
Health Expressive Arts Program.
This offering broadens the Museum’s base of participation by providing a historically
underserved audience access to the Museum’s exhibitions and collections.
During 2011, GRAM presented a diverse range of major
exhibitions. These temporary exhibitions supplement
the offerings from the permanent collection and promote
life-long learning.
Class Pictures: Photographs by Dawoud Bey
(January 21 – March 20, 2011)
Dawoud Bey’s photography is community-focused and collaborative in nature. Between
1992 and 2007, Bey traveled to six high schools in the Midwest and both coasts. Together,
the words and images in Class Pictures offer unusually respectful and perceptive portraits
of American adolescence at the beginning of the 21st century.
Birds of America: Audubon Prints from Shelburne Museum
(April 15 – August 14, 2011)
Birds of America is widely recognized by art historians and naturalists alike as the greatest
natural history publication of all time. The life-size images depict a colorful array of native
birds as discovered and immortalized by the early nineteenth century great American
woodsman, John James Audubon. Between 1827 and 1838, Audubon and his engraver
Robert Havell produced 435 hand-colored and engraved plates of scope and standard
never before seen in ornithological recording.
In addition to the Birds of America exhibition, a special area was created in the
Hunting Gallery that included contextual and informative installations and activities.
The Teaching Gallery included rare publications by Audubon and his contemporaries, a
display on etching techniques, and a hand-coloring exercise. The Teaching Gallery invited
guests with diverse levels of familiarity with Art Museums to learn about and experience
art and process.
Exhibition Program
The Art Museum, located in the heart of the city, continually
offers high quality cultural experiences that draw residents
as well as visitors from beyond the region, strengthening
the economic vitality of our community.
GRAM served as an Exhibition Center during ArtPrize 2011, with a goal of presenting
works that reflected the diversity of current directions in contemporary art, and were
consistent with the overall aesthetic experience the Art Museum provides all year long.
Through the exhibition and the accompanying programs, GRAM sought to broaden the
visitor’s understanding and definition of contemporary art.
• Artist Laura Alexander, The Tempest II, was an ArtPrize Top 10 finalist
• Cathlyn Newell received the “Best Use of Urban Space” Juried Award for Salvaged Landscape
• GRAM supported ArtPrize artists by connecting them with collectors who purchased the
following works of art:
- Timothy Cleary, Illegitimate
- Kenneth Cooper, Entry Into My Past…Portal To My Future
- David Gillanders, Tempus Fugit
- David Huang, Numinous Community
- Jennifer O’Meara, American Icon
Living and working in Wisconsin, Warrington Colescott is the premier satirical
printmaker working in the United States, employing his sharp wit and vivid imagination
to interpret contemporary and historical events.
