A beautiful and decorative album of Japanese chrysanthemums, several of the plates have hand finishing. The chrysanthenum is probably the most popular Japanese flower and of great symbolic importance. A yearly festival of 'happiness' is held in Japan to celebrate this magnificent flower. The present work is one of the most attractive Japanse flower books, printed in lovely delicate colours, and of a high artistic level. The work is rare and Kerlen only quotes the first volume of the 89 edition. The 90 and 89 editions are identical. A fine copy. Kerlen 8 . 1

Contemporary red marbled boards, spine gone. € 900 The atlas only of this important mineralogical work. Abbé René Just Haüy ( 7 - 82 ) is the founder of mathematical crystallography and raised mineralogy to the rank of a science. 'This is the man who truly founded and developed the science of crystallography and as Adams says, was simple, modest, a lover of learning, whose attention was directed to the study of mineralogy almost by chance. In handling a group of calcite crystals at the home of a friend, Haüy accidentally dropped them. When he reexamined the broken prism he noticed a new form, bounded by faces as smooth and shining as the original. A new light broke upon the subject' (Hoover 9 ). Contemporary marbled boards, red gilt lettered label on spine (head of spine a bit worn). € 2. 00 A very scarce work with excellent plates intended according to the introduction as a kind of supplement to Herbst's equally rare work 'Naturgeschichte der Krabben und Krebse'. The four parts have the following subtitles: I. Naturgeschichte der Insekten- Gattungen Solpuga und Phalangium; II. Naturgeschichte der Insecten-Gattung Opilio; III. Fortsetzung der Naturgeschichte der Insectengattung Opilio; IV. Naturgeschichte der Skorpionen. The first part is written by Lichtenstein and Herbst, the following parts are by Herbst alone. "In the meanwhile W. Herbst, a German entomologist, had given fuller treatment to the 'Afterspinnen', or near-spiders, and in Volume III ( 799) of his 'Natursystem der ungeflügelten Insekten', ... he described twenty-eight species, illustrated by unusually clear figures. Herbst discarded the old name Phalangium, on the insufficient grounds that it had been used by the ancient writers as a name for true spiders, and replaced it by Opilio, of which genus he is thus the author" (Savory p. 6).
