First edition of the foundation of modern Ichthyology. 'This taxonomically most important
work assured Artedi the honor of being the father of the science of ichthyology'
(DSB). Petrus Artedi was a Swedish physician and died at the early age of 0. He was
entrusted by Seba to write the third part of his 'Thesaurus' dealing with fishes and one
evening after meeting with Seba and some friends he lost his way in the darkness and
was drowned in one of the Amsterdam canals. He was a close friend of Linnaeus who
published his work after his death, without altering anything. In the second part Artedi
presents his famous system of classification which was adopted by Linnaeus in his
'Systema Naturae'. The book was issued in parts. I. Bibliotheca Ichthyologia, a critical
bibliography of books on fishes. II. Philosophia Ichthyologia. III. Genera Piscium. IV.
Prague & Paris, chez l'auteur & éditeur, 8 2- 9 . 8 sections (bound in
0 volumes). to. pp. 822 , with 606 lithographed plates. Original cloth,
Joachim Barrande ( 799- 88 ) "collected, described, and drew the fossils of the central
Bohemian basin - this area has been called the Barrandian ever since. The strata of this
basin are Proterozoic - early Paleozoic in age. The results formed the outstanding monograph
'Système Silurien'. Because this work is so comprehensive, its drawings so accurate,
and its descriptions so fine, it is still used as a reference book by paleontologists (D.B.S. I,
pp. 68/ 69). Zittel (pp. / 6) called this handbook "a work which stands almost unrivalled
in palaeontological literature". It contains descriptions and figures of 6 species,
with a few exceptions all coming from the Lower Palaeozoic marine beds of Bohemia. The
most sumptuously produced work ever produced in paleontology. Barrande was a pupil
of Cuvier, Orbigny and Brogniart.
Contents as follows, volume I: Trilobites - II: Céphalopodes - III: Ptéropodes - IV:
Gastéropodes - V: Brachiopodes - VI: Acéphales - VII: Echinodermes: Cystidées - VIII:
Bryozoaires, Hydrozoaires, Anthozoaires, Alcyonaires. A complete set of this monumental
classic on the paleontology of Bohemia, which was privately printed in a very small
limited edition of 2 0 copies only. The first volume of the Tilobites pp. 9 , with plates
[ ] BATTARRA, (G.A.). Fungorum Agri Ariminensis historia ... quam
sub auspiciis plurimum reverendi DD. Francisci Raynaldi Gargani... in
hac secunda editione nec aucta nec diminuta publici juris fecit. Faventiae,
Typis Martinianis, 7 9. to (280 x 200mm). pp. viii, 80, with engraved
vignette on title and 0 engraved plates. Later half calf, spine with gilt lines
and lettering, marbled sides. € .000
Second edition of this rare and beautifully produced work describing a great variety of
fungi growing around Rimini. Antonio Giovanni Battarra ( 7 - 789) was an Italian clergyman
(of Rimini), physician and mycologist. The interesting engraved vignette on the
title has the following motto (in Greek) 'We study fungi, we do not eat them'. Ainsworth
considers the engravings 'excellent'. In "Zur Geschichte der Mykologie, das XVIII. Jahrhundert"
by Lütjeharms pp. to 7 a large comment is given of this publication.
Battarra attempted to prove that mushrooms were really plants growing from spores and
not just putrefying matter as was generally believed in those days. C.H. Persoon knew of
the work of Battarra and even named a new genus of Fungi, Battarra, after him. The 200
figures on the 0 plates are finely engraved and give a very good impression of the mushrooms
depicted. The first edition was published in 7 and the present edition has only
8
Battarra
some minor alterations. Owner's stamp (Henry Bonnet) on lower margin of title.
[ ] BELON, P. La nature & diversité des poissons. Avec leurs pourtraicts,
representez au plus pres du naturel. Paris, Charles Estienne, . Oblong-
8vo ( 0 x 6 mm). (20) leaves, pp. 8, with 92 woodcuts in the text.
Contemporary limp vellum, gilt edges. € . 00
A very fine copy of the first French edition. "Belon is looked upon as the founder of
modern ichthyology as well as an authority on ornithology. The illustrations of fishes
and some other aquatic animals in this volume are of exceptional quality for the sixteenth
century, although some of them are fanciful." (Wood p. 2 0). The present work
is a translation of his "De Aquatilibus ..." printed in , it describes about 0 species
of fishes of which 9 marine. 'Belon's treatise contains figures of several molluscs which
are among the earliest to be published (the very first being of a crawling snail reproduced
in Conrad von Megenberg's 'Puoch der Natur' published in 7 " ('Delight for the eyes
and the mind' by Peter Dance). Belon was a student of Valerius Cordus and became one
of the first explorer-naturalists of the near East. In Rome he met the zoologists Rondelet
and Salviani, both eminent disciples of ichthyology after Aristotle, both of whom published
important illustrated works on fishes. Apart from fishes the above work depicts a
whale, dolphin, beaver, otter, crocodiles, tortoise, hippopotamus, as well as the famous
sea-monk, which supposedly washed on a beach in . "Belon enriched the biological
sciences by new observations and contributed greatly to the progress of the natural history
in the sixteenth century ... (his) observations were generally correct. He looked at
the world as an analyst devoted to detail. He succeeded in winning the confidence of the
great and was famous during his lifetime" (DSB).
The first edition of the first flora of Guatamala and a presentation copy from the author
to Giovanni Casaretto, Italian botanist ( 8 2- 879). Antonio Bertolini ( 77 - 869) was a
Italian botanist and professor of botany at Bologna and wrote predominantly on Italian
botany. Joaquin Velasco, a Mexican physician, collected the plants in Guatamala. He
came to Italy in 8 6, as part of the Mexican papal delegation, and brought with him numerous
dried plants and seeds which he presented to Bertolini. Most of them were new or
rare species, and their description and classification forms the present work. Several were
successfully grown in the Bologna Botanical Gardens.
This work is an offprint from the 'Novi Commentarii Academiae Scientarum Instituto
pp. (lxviii), 200, (6 ), with handcoloured woodcut portrait of Bock and
68 fine handcoloured woodcuts in the text. Recent blindstamped pigskin
over bevelled wooden boards, with clasps. € .000
A fine contemporary handcoloured copy of the first Latin edition, translated by David
Kyber, with 8 new woodcuts which appear for the first time, and the first edition to
include the Gesner and Tessier material. The first illustrated German edition of Bock,
was published in 6, and contained 68 woodcuts (enlarged to 0 in the edition)
by David Kandel. Kandel for the most part based his woodcuts on those of Fuchs and
Brunfels, but some one hundred are entirely original, and include several with charming
genre scenes accompanying the plant depictions, many with his initials.
Bock was one of the 'Fathers of German Botany', the triumvirate that included Brunfels
and Fuchs. As a botanist Bock was their decided superior. He was not shackled to the
classical authority of Dioscorides and Pliny, and therefore could recognise new plants
without his perception being clouded by supposed classical precedents. He pioneered
descriptive botany, giving a detailed developmental history of each plant in its stages of
growth, and was the first to discuss plant communities, thus foreshadowing the science
of ecology.
Gesner's contribution to this edition comprises a preface to the work and a 0-page bibliography
of botanical writers, constituting the first botanical bibliography. Tessier provided
a commentary on Dioscorides.
A few leaves with old repairs, including inner margin of title. Some running titles and
shoulder notes shaved. Apart from a very light marginal staining on the first leaves of the
first volume, a crisp and fine copy in attractive contemporary colouring.
lithographed by Battistelli, most of them from drawings by Carolus Ruspi and Petrus
Quattochi. Charles Lucien Bonaparte was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite
his family connections and the disruptions that followed the Napoleonic era, he became
a competent and highly respected naturalist. "Now he intended to increase the knowledge
of all branches of the vertebrates by his researches and theoretical works; with his
'Iconografia della fauna Italica', begun in 8 2 and completed in 8 , he added to the
which the ones showing birds of prey, are of outstanding quality and are reminescent of
An interesting collection of of the original copper engraved blocks (of 98), all well
preserved, of this important treatise on the fishes of Africa. All copper engravings are
mounted on oakwood and have the volume number and plate number inscribed at the
back. Boulenger's publication is the first major work on the fresh water fishes of Africa
and together with a large collection of the original blocks, serving for the illustrations, this
represents a unique occasion for any naturalist studying the ichthyological fauna of Africa.
"The past decade has been productive of an enormous increase in our knowledge of
the Fresh-water Fishes of Africa. The explorations of the Congo and the Nile, undertaken
at considerable expense... and of the great lakes of Central Africa, initiated in this country
have resulted in the discovery and description of an unexpectedly large number of generic
and specific forms, types of most of which are deposited in the Natural History Museum"
(From the Introduction). George Albert Boulenger ( 8 8- 9 7) was a Belgian-British
zoologist who worked at the British Museum. He was famous for his monographs on
amphibians, lizards and other reptiles and fishes as well as his monographs on the fishes
of Africa. "Boulenger's contemporaries have noted his incredible memory for specimens,
species descriptions, and for the associated literature, which was the key to the great speed
at which he worked. He could read six languages well and converse in most of them, and
wrote with equal facility, but his manuscripts were never typed and went straight to the
typesetter in longhand. Boulenger was a tireless worker with strict self discipline, and he
also had great charm: a distinguished figure in the London scientific establishment and a
proper Victorian gentleman" (Adler p. ).
A splendid, uniformly bound, large paper copy. "This edition was certainly the most ambitious
and comprehensive bird book which had appeared at the time of its publication,
and ranks still as one of the most important of all bird books from a collector's point of
view" (Fine Bird Books). 'Les planches de l' édition grand in-folio (dont le er volume est
daté 77 ) semblent plus soignées que celles de l'édition du format inférieur' (Ronsil p.
). The beautifully hand coloured plates, here in their largest format and most refined
colouring, are the most influential suite of ornithological plates of the eighteenth century.
The text of the present work is based on the nine ornithological volumes of Buffon's
forty-four volume 'Histoire naturelle générale et particulière', Paris 7 9- 80 .
George Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon ( 707- 788) was France's foremost scientist and
a preeminent literary figure of the 8th century. In 7 9 Buffon was appointed director of
the Royal Garden in Paris, a position he would hold for 9 years. He was one of the most
important scientists of the French Enlightenment and the unique literary quality of his
encyclopedia won him a place among the Immortals of the French Academy. A few copies
of this work have non ornithological plates bound in, which are not present here and
An almost complete set, lacking plate 28 'Campement sur le Rio Paraguay' in the 'Vues et
Scènes', of the most important 9th century scientific expedition to the interior of South
America.
"Castelnau and his party sailed to Rio de Janeiro on board the French brig 'Petit-Touards',
and began his meteorological, magnetic, botanical, and zoological observations there.
The expedition resolved to cross South America from Rio via Minas Geraes, Goias, and
Mato Grosso. They explored the north of Mato Grosso, the Paraguay River as far as
Asunción, and from Vila Bela they travelled to Bolivia through Potosi, finally reaching
La Paz. From there they journeyed to Lima, where they spent some time, then proceeded
20
to the source of the Amazon from whence they sailed to Pará. Owing to the death of a
member of the expedition, d' Osery, who was killed by Indians, a large part of the records
were lost... However, the minutes were saved, which made the writing of this history of
the expedition possible. This monumental work is today still of great scientific value, and
sought after not only for its scientific content, but also by bibliophiles because of its very
fine beautiful coloured plates... The first edition, complete in all its parts, commands a
high price." (Borda de Moraes p. 67-8). François de Castelnau ( 8 0- 880) was a French
naturalist and studied natural history under Cuvier and Saint Hilaire. The collection of
hundreds of zoological specimens and ,000-6,000 plant specimens resulted in the discovery
of many new species.
Curtis is one of the great names in botany, the present work and his famous 'Botanical
Magizine' are landmarks in English botany. The impressive 'Flora Londinensis' is much
more comprehensive in scope than its title suggests, for it embraces most of the English
flora, and as a result of which it should be properly regarded as the first colour-plate national
flora. "Curtis adopted the novel plan of having specimens drawn to a uniform scale
and to life size, and most of the plates display a high degree of accuracy. In the opinion
of Salisbury, the majority of the figures 'represent the most successful portrayals of British
wild flowers that have ever been achieved'" (Henry II, p. 67). The fine plates are by James
Sowerby and Sydenham Edwards. Our copy has the list of subscribers, the indices, the
'General observations on the advantage which may result from the Introduction of the
Seeds of our best Grasses' (2 leaves), and 'A catalogue of certain plants... in the environmens
A very fine copy of the first edition, first issue. "After the 'Origin of Species', Darwin wrote
three more books expanding different aspects of the work. 'The Variation of Animals and
Plants....' took up in detail that subject which had been confined to one chapter of the
'Origin'. It contained his hypothesis of pangenesis, by means of which Darwin tried to
frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance, inheritance of acquired characters, atavism,
and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena
which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day, such as fertilization by
2
the union of sperm with egg, the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance, and the development
of the embryo by successive cell division. His hypothesis of pangenesis could
not therefore give a permanently acceptable account of the multitude of phenomena it
was designed to explain. It was, however, a point of departure for particulate theories of
inheritance in the latter nineteenth century" (DSB).
This is one of two major French works
published on this region. The other work
is by Tussac 'Flore des Antilles' 808- 828
and is equally rare. Descourtilz ( 77 - 8 6) was a French physician, naturalist and traveller.
"Following his marriage to the daughter of Rossignol-Desdunes, who had plantations
in Artibonite, he went to Saint-Domingue (Haiti) in 798, on the way visting Charleston,
South Carolina, and Santiago de Cuba. Descourtilz became involved in the Negro revolution
... Most of his original drawings and manuscripts, as well as his herbarium, were
burned in Haiti... (DSB). The present work is a great rarity and sets usually consist of
mixed issues (see for example the de Belder copy Soth. 27 april 987 no. 99 or the Cleveland
Monceau ( 700- 78 ), the famous French dendrologist, worked a.o. on animal and vegetable
physiology. His botanical work may be regarded as the inception of forest botany.
The above offered work was of great importance and is one of the finest and rarest books
on fruits. According to this importance, a second and third edition appeared in 782 and
22 coloured-printed plates was practically a new work.
"The outcome was 'Traité des arbres fruitiers....', Paris, 768, in two quarto volumes with
80 engraved plates. Numerous cultivars of 6 fruit species are first characterized in Latin,
then thoroughly described in French. Many illustrated in foliage, fruit, blossom, and
seed. An engraved fruit-laden frontispiece carries the title 'Pomona gallica'... Du Hamel's
dedication was admirable. In 76 , to describe just one cultivar, he rode 60 kilometers and
back to view the original tree and fruit of the 'Bézi de Chaumontel' pear, which Merlet
The complete zoological part of Duperrey's famous circumnavigation with the "Coquille".
Louis-Isidore Duperrey ( 786- 86 ) made his first voyage around the world with
L. de Freycinet in 8 7- 820. Already 2 years later he set sail on the "Coquille" with
J.S.C. Dumont d'Urville as second in command. On this long voyage, an impressive array
of geological, botanical and zoological specimens were collected, which were housed
in the "Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle" after their return in Marseille in 82 . On board
the well-known French pharmacist and ornithologist R. Lesson served as naturalist and
surgeon. The large collections and exhaustive zoological descriptions (especially regarding
the birds) were made by him, together with P. Garnot and F.E. Guérin-Méneville. Of
the beautiful 7 plates, depict birds (of which many were new to science), 8 fishes, 9
mammals, 7 reptiles, 6 molluscs, 6 zoophytes, crustaceans, and 22 insects. All are very
finely colour-printed (many finished by hand) after drawings by J.G. Prêtre, R.P. Lesson,
Bévalet, Prévost, and a few others.
29
"The aims of the expedition, it will be remembered, had been largely scientific and Duperrey
had well carried out his instructions in this respect... The geologists thanked Lesson
especially for the 00 samples of rock he had brought back. D'Urville was praised for
his botanical work, and the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle received with gratitude ,200
insects, 0 of which had not been available before, most of them collected by d'Urville.
There were in addition 26 birds and quadrupeds, 6 reptiles, and 288 fishes, more than
80 of them new specimens (Dunmore II, pp. 2- ).
The work is usually found with some foxing. In our copy about one third of the plates
have been more or less seriously affected.
Lilian Snelling of the first seven parts of the supplement. These plates are therefore double
& Wesley 'The supplement to the Monographs of the Genus Lilium has been out of print
for a good many years, but there remained a few sets of the beautiful plates which came
into our hands a short time ago and they are now reissued in a limited edition."
Henry John Elwes ( 8 6- 922) was a British botanist who visited the Himalayas, Tibet,
China, Asia Minor and many other countries collecting and discovering many new and
beautiful plants. His 'Monograph of the Genus Lilium' is his most splendid publication.
The work was issued in three separate and distinct stages, that is the 'Monograph' published
between 877 and 880, with 8 superbly handcoloured plates by W.H. Fitch, then
the first seven parts of the 'Supplement' by A. Grove and A.D. Cotton between 9 and
9 0, illustrated by Lilian Snelling and finally parts 8 and 9 of the 'Supplement' by W.B.
Turrill between 960 and 962 illustrated by Margaret Stones.
Walter Hood Fitch, the artist of the first 8 plates, was one of the most prolific botanical
artists of the Victorian era 'His flamboyant but accurate drawings gained him international
fame and recognition and provided vitally important records of an immense
number of plants new to botany' (J. Lewis, Walther Hood Fitch. A celebration p. ).
"At the age of sixty, Fitch began work on his last great series of lithographs, which were
to form the illustrations of the 'Monograph of the Genus Lilium' ( 877-80) of H.J. Elwes.
The supplement to this famous book… was illustrated by Miss Lilian Snelling, who
proved a worthy successor to the industrious Scot. In the words of Sir Jospeh, Fitch was
an 'incomparable botanical artist' with an 'unrivalled skill in seizing the natural character
of a plant…'" (Great Flower Books p. ). Fitch made numerous plates for Curtis's 'Botanical
magazine' from 8 to 877. He also made the illustrations of another splendid
flower book, Hooker's 'Rhodondendrons of Sikkim-Himalaya'.
André Alexandre Fauche-Prunelle (Grenoble 79 - 86 ) is known for his historical publications
such as 'Recherches sur l'origine du parlement de Grenoble', 8 9. He must also
have been a keen naturalist as he likewise published 2 botanical works: 'Coup d'oeil sur la
végétation des Alpes', 8 8 and 'Coup d'oeil sur la végétation de Briançon', 860. According
to H.H. Trouvelot 'Les Faucher ou Fauché' p. 2 , Fauché-Prunelle was well known for
his paintings of butterflies, which he exhibited 'au Salon de Grenoble'.
Fauché-Prunelle must have made more collections of butterflies. years ago we sold a
collection of 682 butterly transfers by him with the following title: "Papillons du Dauphiné'.
First edition. The work is based upon Thomas Pennant's unpublished 'Indian Zoology',
769, which Pennant abandoned after 2 plates had been issued. Pennant gave the stock
of plates along with three further unpublished ones, to Johann Reinhold Forster, who
translated and expanded the text. It was Forster's work which in turn formed the basis
of Pennant's later formally published 'Indian Zoology', 79 . The original plates for the
work come from the collection of Joan Gideon Loten ( 7 0- 789), Dutch Governor of
Ceylon, in service of the VOC. Loten was a keen naturalist and commissioned Pieter
Cornelis De Bevere to make drawings of the fauna of Ceylon and Java. These drawings
are now kept at the London Natural History Museum and Teylers Museum at Haarlem.
Loten lived part of his life in London and was well acquainted with Joseph Banks and
other naturalists such as Thomas Pennant. The artist Sydney Parkinson, who would in
768 accompany Joseph Banks as his draughtsman on his voyage aboard the Endeavour
( 768- 77 ), was commissioned in 767 to copy and enhance those plates of the Loten
collection which would serve to illustrate the 'Indian Zoology'. The plates were engraved
by Peter Mazell.
"It was entirely based upon Joan Gideon Loten's watercolours and annotations. The work
is considered to be the first attempt at a systematic study of the birds of Sri Lanka and
Java" (A.J.P. Raat p. 26). In 79 Pennant published a second edition in to. The plates
were reduced in size and the colouring is poor.

volumes which was posthumously published by P.S. Pallas, years after the third volume
was published. Our copy lacks the second volume and according to the Staatsbibl. Berlin
a map in the first volume. The first volume has the following subtitle: Reise von St.
Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin ( 7 - 77 ) was born in a well-known family of naturalists.
Born in Tübingen he earned his medical degree in 76 from the University of Leiden at
the age of 8. In 767 he was invited to St. Petersburg and became an academician of the
St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. "One of the expeditions undertaken by the command
of the Empress Catherine II …. The first volume described the journey from St.
Petersbourg to the Don area in 768-69, while the second deals with the journey to and
the period in Astrakhan in 769-70. In 770-72 Gmelin travelled in Northern Persia and
was the first naturalist to explore this country" (Anker 62). While travelling in the Caucasus
he was taken hostage by Usmey Khan of Khaïtakes and died of ill treatment at the
age of 29. The work describes many new species of animals and plants. In some cases two
plates are printed on one leaf. The fine engraved plates portray mammals, birds, plants,
town views, two plates show amphibians, fishes, maps and people. The posthumously rare
th volume issued by Peter Simon Pallas has a large biography of Gmelin. A fine copy. A
[ 0] GOULD, J. The Birds of Great Britain. London, Taylor and Francis
for the Author, [ 862] - 87 . volumes. Folio ( x 80mm.). With 67
fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, many heightened with gum-arabic,
after John Gould, Joseph Wolf, H.C. Richter and W. Hart. Contemporary
green half morocco, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments
(minor skilful repair to spines). € 6 . 00
First edition. The most splendid work on the birds of Great Britain ever produced. "The
most popular of all Gould's works is always likely to be the 'Birds of Great Britain'" (Fine
Bird Books p. 29). The work had almost 00 subscribers and 'Gould was especially proud
of this work on the birds of his native land. As a 'novelty' he included quite a few drawings
with the figures of young birds. As would be expected, there were more subscribers
for this set than any other...'(Sauer p. 7 ).
"However, Gould's 'Birds of Great Britain', ... did add a great deal to our knowledge
of British birds, besides being a more complete set of pictures of our native birds than
previously printed. Furthermore, for the first time we have a lot of chicks, eggs and nests
depicted. This title is outstanding for the attention paid to the young of the species.
Gould had reached high and low for specimens of the nestlings of rare species and their
nests. Wherever possible, drawings were done from freshly killed specimens. The result
is that this book has much more lively birds than in Gould's previous folios, and there is
much more freedom in showing the birds in different attitudes. Gould did the sketches
himself, Hart and Richter did the full-scale water-colours and then the two lithographers
drew the patterns on the stone... The illustrations show Gould's work at his best and it
demonstated the work of all his artists and lithographers except Lear and Mrs. Gould.
Lord Lilford, when preparing a similar work, fifteen years later, wrote of Gould's book,
'For really beautiful and correct illustrations of British birds, you will find Gould's great
work on that special subject in the library, but the books are so large that you will require
a boy to help you carry them from the house' (Jackson pp. - 2).
José Gumilla ( 686- 7 0), Spanish Jesuit, stayed for 0 years at the Orinoco missions and
was the first to publish a comprehensive account on the Orinoco river, its people, tribes
and natural history. "The work of father Gumilla is one of the most curious and interesting
hitherto published upon the country of the Orinoco." (Sabin 29276). "He travelled
widely on the Middle Orinoco and had ascended to Apure, Arauca and Meta rivers... and
in 7 published what was the first descriptive account of the Orinoco and its tributaries...
In his book Gumilla spoke bitterly of the slave traders who invaded his country"
(Howgego p. 6 ). The present work is based on Gumilla's personal observations as well
as material he found in manuscripts left by fathers Mercado and Ribera. The beautiful
Andreas Friedrich Happe ( 7 - 802) was a well-known artist, engraver, naturalist as well
as pharmacist. He was born in Aschersleben and died in Berlin in 802. He published a
number of books on pharmaceutical botany of which the most important is his 'Botanica
pharmaceutica…' Berlin 78 (- 806). He was also the artist for the plates of the first two
volumes of Martini & Chemnitz 'Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet'. However
he is better known for his botanical artwork. The Oak Spring Garden Library has a four
volume 'Herbarium pictum', an impressive collection of 0 watercolors. The Hunt Botanical
Library possesses a manuscript by him 'Flora Happiana', with 7 watercolors.
This is one of the rarest German iconographies on pharmaceutical botany. Complete copies
with 9 plates and 20 pages of text are pratically unknown and the British Museum
of Natural History is one of the few libraries to have such a copy. No complete copy has
been offered at auction, the most complete copy to have been offered at auction was in
Germany in 200 with 89 plates. We sold a copy in 98 with coloured plates for
2.000 dutch guilders. The present copy is the most complete one offered for sale during
many decades. The rarity, of especially the last volume, is due to the great upheavel caused
by the Napoleontic Wars and the long period of publication.
Andreas Friedrich Happe ( 7 - 802) was a well-known artist, engraver, naturalist as well
as pharmacist. He was born in Aschersleben and died in Berlin in 802. His 'Botanica
Pharmacevtica' is his major publication. As the work does not have a publisher it is likely
that Happe was also the publisher. The rarity of the last volume can also be explained by
the fact that Happe died prior to its publication. The title vignette show the author drawing
plants in front of a lovely countryside. All plates are drawn and engraved by Happe
and most probaly colourerd by him. The colouring is exquite with a lot of detail. Our
A very scarce work with excellent plates intended according to the introduction as a
Gattungen Solpuga und Phalangium; II. Naturgeschichte der Insecten-Gattung Opilio;
III. Fortsetzung der Naturgeschichte der Insectengattung Opilio; IV. Naturgeschichte
are by Herbst alone. "In the meanwhile W. Herbst, a German entomologist, had given
fuller treatment to the 'Afterspinnen', or near-spiders, and in Volume III ( 799) of his
'Natursystem der ungeflügelten Insekten', ... he described twenty-eight species, illustrated
by unusually clear figures. Herbst discarded the old name Phalangium, on the insufficient
grounds that it had been used by the ancient writers as a name for true spiders, and
replaced it by Opilio, of which genus he is thus the author" (Savory p. 6). Johann Friederich
A total of some 26,000 plants are illustrated and described. 'The Vegetable system is of
great importance because it gave for the first time in the vernacular a comprehensive treatment
of the plant kingdom, on a lavish scale... adopting the Linnaean generic names and
introducing binary nomenclature' (Stafleu). Numerous species are described for the first
The Vegetable system is dedicated to the Prince of Wales, later George III. Its publication
was instigated by, and partially financed by, John Stuart, Earl of Bute, a notable patron of
consists of parts with 2 engravings. Sadeler copies Hoefnagel, albeit with quite some
changes. The lettering is different and there are a number of spelling mistakes. Many of
the plates are slightly different adding small animals or replacing others. The second plate
of the present work is dedicated to 'All' Illmo Sigr. mio Sigr. et Pron. Colmo. Il Sigr.
Lorenzo Soranzo Podestà et Capitano di Treuiso' engraved by Jo. De Fris. DD. Each
7
plate is illustrated with insects, small animals, flowers, fruits, vegetables, etc, most have
captions in Latin.
Comparing Sadeler's suite of plates with Hoefnagel's 'Archetypa' the former does not
contain the frontispiece title of pars prima; plate of pars I; plate 6 of pars I; plate 2 of
pars I; frontispiece title of pars tertia; plate 2 of pars III; plate of pars III; plate of pars
III; plate 6 of pars III; plate 2 of pars III; frontispiece title of pars qvarta; plate of pars
IV; plate 8 of pars IV.
Saderer's suite of plates seems to be even rarer than Hoefnagel's original. According to Dr.
Sam Segal our copy is the most complete copy known. He only knows of 2 copies. One
copy formely in the library of C.G. van Tubbergen, Haarlem with plates and another
one with 9 plates. WorldCat lists a copy in America with 7 plates, which was purchased
from Lathrop Harper's catalogue 97 no. 8. The Tubbergen copy contains some plates
which are not in our copy. It is however unknown if Sadeler's suite of plates ever contained
the same number of plates as Hoefnagel's work.
Justus Sadeler (Antwerp 72?-c. 620) was a member of a famous family of engravers
and the son Jan Sadeler I. "He was a pupil and assistant of his father, whom he followed
to Munich and then to Italy. In 60 Justus was recorded in Venice, where he spent the
greater part of his career… Justus left a very small number of his own work… Otherwise
his oeuvre consists mainly of copies after prints by Adrian Collaert, Joris Hoefnagel, Hendrick
Hondius and Hans Vredeman de Vries" (Dictionary of Art).
"The series of engravings in the 'Archetypa', published in Frankfurt in 92 - showing
close-up portraits of plants, insects, and small animals, with their sources in paintings
8
y Joris Hoefnagel - immediately aroused the admiration of lovers of art and nature. The
impressive depictions of the 'little world', the microcosm, were intended not merely as
representations, but through their penetration into form and structure were also meant to
provide a means of explaining the plan of creation - the macrocosm. Joris Hoefnagel was
the last significant miniaturist of the late sixteenth century. His fame was, and continues
to be, based on the illuminated manuscripts and cabinet miniatures that he produced
on commissions from the Emperor Rudolf II and other courtly patrons. His son Jacob,
building on his father's fame, produced a series of engravings based on his father's nature
motifs, under the title 'Archetypa'… the engravings are accompanied by epigrams that
give the images an emblematic quality extending beyond superficial representation" (T.
Vignau-Wilberg p. 7).
The full title of Hoefnagel's work is: 'Archetypa studiaque patris Georgii Hoefnagelii
Jacobus F. genio duce ab ipso scalpta omnibus philomusis amice D. ac perbenigne communicat'.
[Archetype and verses by G Hoefnagel, his father, are presented, engraved in copper under
the guidance of his genius and communicated in friendship to all lovers of the Muses
by his son Jacob].
Later copies of Hoefnagel's 'Archetypa', are known to have been published by Christian
Weigel in Nürnberg, Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg, as well as single sheets by Nicolaes
Johannes Vischer in 6 0.
Apart from some occasional light foxing a fine copy with strong impressions.
A large section of Hooker's botanical publication of 'The Botany of the Antarctic Voyage
of H.M. Discovery ships Erebus and Terror..'. Three sections were published, each section
in two parts. Of the first section 'Flora Antarctica' we offer the complete second part.
The first part is devoted to the 'Botany of the Lord Auckland's Group and Campbell Island'.
Of the second section, the 'Flora Novae-Zelandiae', we offer the complete first part.
The second part describes 'Flowerless plants'. Of the third section 'Flora of Tasmaniae' we
offer the first part. The second part deals with 'Monocotyledons and Acotyledons'.
A fine uniformly bound set. Complete copies are very scarce and a large section as here
offered is rare as well. Joseph Dalton Hooker ( 8 7- 9 ), was the second son of William
Hooker. Through his father's contacts Joseph joined the James Clark Ross Expedition in
the 'Erebus' and 'Terror' to the Antarctic to determine the position of the South Magnetic
Pole. Hooker was appointed Assistant Surgeon and Naturalist. The expedition sailed in
September 8 9 and returned almost exactly four years later. Hooker in his 'Flora Tasmaniae'
was the first major British man of science to openly support Darwin's theory of
natural selection. The excellent plates are by Walter Hood Fitch, one of the best botanical
artists of the period and Kew's official botanical artist.
A very fine copy of the rare quarto edition with the plates finely hand-coloured, the regular
edition was published in octavo either with plain or coloured plates. This is the best issue
of this beautifully illustrated work. The plates are by the author, engraved by Edwards,
probably Sydenham Edwards. "Hooker thoroughly described and figured 7 species of
mosses and liverworts from different parts of the world, contributed by a number of his
correspondents, e.g. Humboldt, Gardner, Menzies and R. Brown. A large number of species
were new, representing singular bryophytes, which were later segregated into several
new genera" (Margadant p. ). William Jackson Hooker ( 78 - 86 ) was a British botanist,
professor of Botany in Glasgow and director of the Royal Kew Gardens. He was the
father of Joseph Dalton Hooker, who became one of the most famous British botanists
First edition. These splendid monographs form part of Humboldt's 'Voyage aux régions
équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent fait en 799- 80 '.
"It is perhaps one of the grandest works on American Botany ever put forth" (Sabin).
"The expedition to South America and Central America in the years 799 to 80 by
Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt ( 769- 8 9) and Aimé Jacques Alexander
von Bonpland ( 77 - 8 8) has long been accepted as the most important ever made to
America, because its results, based upon study by many specialists of the immense quantity
of specimens and observations relating to botany, zoology, geology, geography and
history which they amassed with almost incredible industry and often under great difficulty,
were... made available within a comparatively short time afterwards.... Humboldt
and Bonpland journeyed into regions then little known or never before scientifically investigated"
(Stearn, Humboldt and Bonpland's 'Voyage aux Régions équinoxiales').
The botanical section of the voyage consists of 6 sections, of which the present second section,
here offered, is probably the most beautifully produced one. The complete account
was published in volumes (with about .200 plates) over a period of 2 years and cost
about 780.000 French francs. The publication of this immense work was done in Paris
where Cuvier, Gay-Lussac, Latreille, and many others co-operated with him.
The beautiful plates of the here offered volumes are all printed in colour by the famous
French printing establishment Langlois, after drawings by the leading French artists Poiteau
and Turpin.
"Pierre Turpin ( 77 - 8 0), who has been hailed as possibly the finest French natural
botanical artist of his period, came from humble beginnings. He was the son of a poor
artisan and learned the elements of drawing at the art school at Vire before enlisting in
the batallion du Calvados at the age of fourteen.
Pierre Poiteau ( 766- 8 ) was a self-taught botanist and artist who spent his early career
working as a gardener at the Jardin des Plantes where he made enough of an impression
to be chosen to be sent to set up a botanic garden at Bergerac. This accomplished, he was
2
next sent as a plant collector to Santo Domingo by the Jardin, where fate stepped in as he
met and became friends with Turpin, who was stationed there with the French army. The
friendship developed into an artistic collaboration which provided illustrations for some
of the most elaborate botanical publications of the period including several of the botanical
volumes depicting the discoveries made by Friedrich Alexander von Humboldt and
Aimé Bonpland in the course of their exploration of Central and South America from
799 to 80 " (Stanley Johnston).

First and only edition of this rare and superbly illustrated work on exotic (including
Australian) and European butterflies. Carl Gustav Jablonsky was private secretary to the
Queen of Prussia. After Jablonsky's untimely death Herbst edited the work from volume
on. Jablonsky and Krüger of Berlin designed the plates with the exception of the fron-
tispiece, which was made by Krüger's father, J.C. Krüger. The engravers are the same ones
as those working for Bloch, primarily Ludwig Schmidt. The work is one of the most attractively
illustrated entomological works of the period, with brilliant colouring. A sequel
was published to the above work dealing with coleoptera. "The Frenchmen were however
preceded in their illustrated compilation of the Cook voyage entomology by Johann
Herbst in Berlin, whose illustrated monographs on beetles (Natursystem der Käfer) were
published between 78 and 79 . Although he may have visited London, it is more likely
that Herbst saw duplicates given to Fabricius by Banks and taken by the former to Kiel,
which is relatively more accessible from Berlin. His illustrations of New Zealand insects
are the earliest published" (Andrews, The Southern Ark p. ). In the present work on
butterflies many descriptions refer to butterflies of New Holland, however only one has
been portrayed. This is the 'Papilio Bankia' on plate 7 .
The last text volume contains a manuscript index at the end which was never published
rare Dutch edition of the German original 'Naturgeschichte der Versteinerungen' (Nuremberg
fossil shells. "It is hardly possible to exaggerate the beauty and fidelity of the representations
of the fossils in his plates. No such illustrations had ever before appeared, and they
have hardly been surpassed since. By delicate lines on the copper plates the most minute
intricacies of structure are reproduced, and by thin washes of colour the tints of the original
specimens are represented. His renderings of dentritic markings, landscape-marble,
fossil plants, crustacea, crinoids, fishes and other fossils are admirable examples of the
union of artistic workmanship with scientific accuracy ..." (Geikie, Founders of Geology,
continuation of the tradition of Dürer, led to an expansion of the work by Walch, as well
as to French and Dutch editions... the detail and accuracy of Knorr's engravings not only
A fine, almost complete set, of the most beautiful flora of the Netherlands. During a period
of years 6 parts were published. As this is a most unusual long period of time
complete sets are of the greatest rarity.
It is one of the great national floras and comparable in extent and span with the 'Flora
Danica', the 'Flora Graeca' and a few others. The first volumes were published by Sepp
& Zoon, a firm which excercised the utmost care in producing colour-plate books of
outstanding quality. The first 2 volumes have the plates handcoloured, the remaining
volumes have chromolithographs. For the first 0 volumes Kops was the editor, to be followed
by several other editors and publishers. The quality of the plates, especially of the
earlier volumes, is excellent, and makes it one of the most attractive botanical illustrated
works published in the Netherlands.
The index volume covers vols. - . The text is both in Dutch and French. A complete
copy has 28 vols with 22 0 plates. The work was issued in 8vo and to. The present copy
is the precious to edition. The first volume has a list of 2 2 subscribers. Little did they
know that it would take years for the whole work to be completed, so that none of
them was to see the last instalment. As publication took so long, it became a true monument
of nineteenth-century book production, since it is extremely rare for so many developments
in printing and illustration techniques to be reflected in one single work.
Rare first edition of Linnaeus' work on medicinal plants. It replaced the 'Stockhom Pharmacopoeia'
which Linneaus considered useless for treating ailments, he modernised the
list and motivated choises in his 'Materia Medica'. In his botanical garden Linnaeus kept
all the important plants that could be cultivated in Sweden as well as many plants he
6
wanted to observe as a botanist. He used his garden to demonstrate medicinal plants and
botany to his medical students. Some that could not be cultivated in Sweden he kept as
dried powder in a medicine cabinet. This cabinet is still kept at the Linnaeus Museum in
There are two issues of the first volume of the first edition; the present one is the second
issue, for which Linnaeus had revised and reprinted three leaves (i.e. E6, F & R2). It is
therefore to be regarded as the definitive edition. Linnaeus himself named this work his
A beautiful, interleaved, contemporary
coloured copy of this later and
enlarged edition of Lonitzer's famous
herbal. The first German edition appeared 7 and was published by Egenolph. It is quite
unusual to find a relatively late edition of this work with such fine colouring. The herbal
was very popular and the last edition appeared in 78 . "No other botanical work of the
period had a success comparable to that of Egenolph's herbals of which that of Lonitzer is
the most important and valuable. It passed through numerous editions (in Latin and German)
until late in the 8th century" (l'Art Ancient, Early Books on Medicine p. 0).
"In 7, according to Anderson, Lonitzer took Rösslin's 'Kreuterbuch', which was itself a
reworking of the 'Gart der Gesundheit' and the 'Distillierbuich', Dorsten's reworking of
the herbal portion of Rösslin's work known as the 'Botanicon', re-edited, combined, and
reworked them with additions of his own to form the present work (i.e the first German
7 edition)" (Johnston, The Cleveland Herbal... 8 ).
98 of the woodcuts concern plants, 2 depict mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, some
0 woodcuts depict metals, minerals, corals and precious stones. There is a special title for
the mineral part 'Beschreibung Natur und Eigenschafft der Metallen und Ertz'. Lower
The work of Marbodus is the earliest lapidary of the middle ages and also the one which is
quoted more widely. Marbodus was Bishop of Rennes and wrote his lapidary, in 7 Latin
hexameters describing 60 stones, between the years 06 and 08 . This is the first edition
of Georg Pictorius's annotated redaction of Marbode's book on the medical and magical
properties of precious stones. Many manuscripts of this lapidary have survived. After the
invention of printing, editions appeared between and 7 0 and still others at later
First edition, second issue with the inclusion of the Appendix and the cancel title dated
7 9, of the first catalogue of the first significant European mineralogical museum. This
copy also contains an unrecorded cancel leaf with a different version of the engraving of
the sleeping Cleopatra. This is one of the most attractive 'museum' books ever published,
with excellent engravings of fossils, minerals, statues, etc. Mercati ( - 9 ), director of
the Vatican botanical garden, had prepared this catalogue of the Vatican collection of fossils
and minerals, assembled under the aegis of Pope Sixtus V, as early as 7 , although
some 0 years elapsed before Lancisi edited and published this work. Besides Mercati's
text, Lancisi discovered the original copper-plates for the engravings, which are printed
here for the first time.
The collection, 'one of the most important of such collections in Europe' (Torrens, The
origins of museums), contained minerals, fossils, classical statues, palaeolithic tools, and
various other natural and man-made artefacts exhibiting the general property of 'stoniness'.
As a record of an important renaissance palaeontological museum, Mercati's work
is of great significance, even though his views on fossils are typical: he believed them
to be lusus naturae, and in fact illustrates, side by side, Glossopetrae (fossilised sharks'
teeth) with the famous depiction of a shark's head with teeth, commenting that one
should not be deceived by their apparent similarity. Mercati did understand the artefact
nature of palaeolithic stone tools, at the time generally held to be products of lightning
bolts. It is fitting that Mercati, the great cataloguer of 'stones', suffered from bladder and
kidney stones which contributed to his death; his autopsy, possibly done by his mentor
Cesalpino, revealed 98 stones. One of the engravings in the text illustrates bladder stones
extracted from Pope Pius V. 'The Vatican collection consists of a series of cabinets with
drawers, or 'armaria', in which are housed collections of earths, salts, alums, gums and
resins, marine products, ores, fossils, marbles, and other objects collected by Mercati...
The plates can scarcely be equalled for fidelity to originals and the exquisite care employed
in their engraving and printing' (Sinkankas, Gemology, an annotated bibliography).
The frontispiece, depicting the presentation of Mercati's Metallotheca to Clement XI, is
by Jakob Frey after Pietro Bianchi. The portrait of Mercati is by Benoit Farjat after Pietro
Nelli's copy of Tintoretto's original. Most of the plates of antique statues in the Marmora
section are by Vincenzo Franceschini and Louis Gaumier, in part after G.D. Campiglia.
The majority of illustrations in the text are from the original sixteenth-century plates
prepared for Mercati, printed here for the first time. The cancel leaf z contains a different
version of the engraving of the sleeping Cleopatra; the original leaf has an engraving
drawn by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia and engraved by Hieronymus Rossi, and the
cancel leaf has a different depiction drawn and engraved by Maximus Justus Limpach of
Prague. The appendix, with 20 (not 9 as per the title) new plates, contains new illustrations,
and re-engravings of most of Gaumier's plates (statues and a few natural history
specimens) with slightly finer detail; obviously for some reason his illustrations in the
main text were considered inferior to the others and therefore a new suite of engravings
7
was prepared. There is a fine double-page view of the 'Metallotheca' and each section is
headed by an engraved depiction of the appropriate cabinet.
Some occasional marginal spotting spotting as often. A fine copy.
[67] MERIAN, MARIA SIBYLLA. Erucarum ortus, alimentum et paradoxa
metamorphosis... Amsterdam, J. Oosterwyk, ( 7 8). parts bound
in one. to (2 0 x 8 mm). With engraved frontispiece by J. Schijnvoet,
other frontispieces of floral wreaths to each part, and 0 engraved plates.
Contemporary Dutch mottled calf panelled in gilt, spine gilt in compartment
(small skilful repair to head of spine). € .000
A superbly bound large copy of the first Latin edition of Maria Sibylla Merian's 'Der
Rupsen Begin', published one year after the third volume of the Dutch language edition.
The work was first published in German 'Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung'.
Of this German edition only 2 parts were published. For the Dutch edition a third part
was added. After Oosterwijk published the present Latin edition he sold the plates to the
Amsterdam publisher J.F. Bernard who published a French edition under quite a different
name 'Histoire des Insectes de l'Europe'. This was a folio work with the plates rearranged
in folio format, mostly plates on one leaf.
New in the first Latin edition is the frontispiece by Schynvoet, and the sometimes present
portrait of Sibylla Merian by Houbraken. As this portrait is lacking in about half the copies,
it is likely that the early issues do not contain this portrait and that is was added later.
All plates show butterflies with their food plants.
The Latin edition was published posthumously as Sibylla Merian died the previous year.
Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the most remarkable naturalists of the 7th and 8th
century, daughter of the renowned publisher Matthäus Merian of Frankfurt. Already at
the very early age of thirteen she began studying insects. She became the most celebrated
woman artist of her time and many of her drawings were acquired by Tsar Peter the Great.
"The work of these years consisted of both scientific and artistic activity: Merian collected
and raised insects, fed them with their host plants, observed them, described and drew
their metamorphoses from egg to caterpillar and from pupa to butterfly imago. She then
compiled her individual observations and studies in pictorial compositions" (Maria Sibylla
Merian, Artist and Naturalist 6 7- 7 7, p. 0 ).
In 699 Sibylla Merian embarked upon the dangerous journey from Amsterdam to Surinam
in the company of her daughter Dorothea. The result of this was her famous 'Metamorphosis
Insectorum Surinamensium' published in Amsterdam 70 .
I have seen or had several copies of Merian's 'Der Rupsen Begin...' or the 'Erucarumn...'
72
in very similar splendidly tooled Dutch bindings. For example Christie's catalogue of 22
March 2000 items 22 and 2 shows pictures of bindings with very similar tooling.
A fine complete copy of this very scarce work on song birds of Germany. We could only
trace 2 copies having been sold in the last decades. An incomplete copy was sold at Christie's
(London) 2 November 99 and a complete, but mediocre copy, at Zisska & Kistner
Auktion 2/II ( 998). The last copy had 2 plates remounted, text page lacking part of text
and numerous restored damaged margins and was sold for DM. 600 (not including the
premium). The charming title-frontispiece shows a nightingale. The unusually fine handcoloured
plates show the birds in their natural habitat, always with their nests and eggs.
The work was published in parts and in part 2 pagination jumps from 27 to 0, which
is the case in all copies. At the end of our copy a part of Levaillant's 'Naturgeschichte der
Great classic on the Geology and Paleontology of Russia. "The following year ( 8 0) Murchison
resolved the matter by discovering in European Russia a sequence of undisturbed
starta in which the Devonian was clearly underlaid by Silurian and overlain by Carboniferous,
and in which Devonian invertebrates were interbedded with Old Red sandstone
fish. This established the temporal equivalence of the Devonian and Old Red Sandstone
despite their contrasting lithology and fauna. A second expedition to Russia in 8 took
Murchison as far as the Urals and confirmed this Paleozoic sequence" (DSB IX, p. 8 ).
One of the important and influential works of Murchison, which brought him worldwide
fame and recognition. The second volume, dealing with palaeontology and almost
entirely with fossil shells, was published in French only.
Almost all plates show fossil shells. A fine copy.
The only other copy known is in the British Museum, London, Department Prints and
Drawings, location 6 .c.2 , registration number 9 7, 09 . 9. 7- . The 6 plates are
reported on a website, without illustrations, with Nicolaes Visscher II [ 6 9- 702 = Nicolaes
Visscher III] as the publisher and dated c. 670- 700. Dimensions c. 2 0 x mm
[within the borders]. Bound in an album of ornamental prints. Transferred from British
Library in 9 7. Several of the flowers are copied in a British series published by John
Overton in London in a slightly larger size (2 7 x 6 mm), without a title; see Hollstein
p. 286).
A series with the identical title 'Novae…incisae', has been published under 'Amstelodamum
Renard 6 0', is in the Bavarian State Library, published as an e-book with two
different physical descriptions: " Platten" [plates] and "[ 0] Bl.: nur III". The e-book
can be ordered via the website. It needs further research to know if this is a similar or an
identical series, and if the series is complete and the other 29 plates are by the same hand
or by different hands.
These data give a confusing view on the artist and publisher as well as the date of publication
and its content and eventual other series or prints. Another complication is a better
known version or copy of the same prints conversed by Jeronimus Falck (c. 6 7 - Gdansk
- 677), published in Hamburg in 662 as well as by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam 662,
most probably after the series by Nicolaes Visscher, named 'Novae et exquisitae florum
icones. Hujus generis atrium cultoribus perutiles, maxima cura delineatae et tabulis aenaeis
incisae per Jeremiam Falck Hamburgi ano 662', and the same with a text below:
77
''t Amsterdam gedruckt bij Frederick de Wit in de Kalverstraat bij den Dam in de Nieue
Paskaert' ( ). The series shows 2 plates of the 6 by Visscher, inverse and less subtle executed,
but at least one copy has plates by another hand added, perhaps later, but all
numbered. The other series is named 'Verscheydene Nieuwe Tulpen, en andere Bloemen /
Novae et exquisitae Florum Icones', a series of 6 prints with Jeremias Falck as the inventor
and Frederick de Widt as the publisher, probably a later edition of an original from
the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Both series have been seen in auctions during
the last 60 years (2).
The author and publisher
Three seventeenth-century publishers in Amsterdam are named Nicolaes Visscher.
Number I is known as Claes Jansz Visscher ( 87- 6 2). He originally illustrated maps
from other publishers and started to publish his own atlases, historical- and genre prints,
landscapes and portraits, and had an art gallery. He also published four (rare) series of
flower still-lifes: after Adriaen Collaert c. 6 2, after Giovanni Battista Rosso, and two by
his own hand, one dated 6 0, next to other copies of flower pots after Elias Verhulst,
Johan Mer ( 609), Adriaen Collaert ( 609, 6 6 and 6 ), Jan Baptist Jacops and Jacob
Savery ( ).
Other engravers, like Peter Schenk, worked after Claes Jansz Visscher. Nicolaes Visscher
II ( 6 8- 679) was a son of Claes Jansz and is sometimes referred as Nicolaes I. He worked
in his father's workshop and took it over after his death. He is most known for his atlases
and town views, partly copied from others. Nicolaes Visscher III ( 6 9- 702) was a son
and follower of Nicolaes II, but is sometimes referred as Nicolaes II. He also published
atlases and historical prints, partly after others.
It is most likely that the series by Nicolaes Visscher is published in or about 6 0 in the
print room of Claes Jansz Visscher. We don't know yet, however, if the series published
that year in Amsterdam with the identical name is the same. The series published by Falck
is, most probably, a copy after the Visscher series. It contains 2 plates in reverse, and
completely different plates. The copy might be after an incomplete series of 2 plates, as in
the Cincinnati copy, the other four added to make it 6. The Bavarian album of plates
is, most probably, a combination with one or more different series. It is not completely
certain if Claes Jansz is the inventor of the series or his son Nicolaes II in his father's print
78
oom, but that is most likely, because his father usually printed his name as 'Claesz J' or
the like.
A very rare, almost complete, early run of this most important paleontological periodical.
Volume 2 lacks 6 plates and volume 0 does not contain the monographs published
between 898 and 906, as the library stopped subscribing after 89 . This beautifully
82
produced periodical containing numerous monographs on fossil shells was edited by the
leading 9th century German paleontologists Herm. von Meyer, Wilh. Dunker and K.A.
Zittel. All famous German paleontologists of the second half of the 9th century contributed,
by publishing larger or smaller monographs in the Palaeontographica.
Added to the present set are some volumes of the 'Palaeontographica Supplementbände'
(supplement volumes)
Supplement volumes to Palaeontographica were published on individual topics. Volume
I ( 862-66): Hellmann, A. Die Petrefacten Thüringens nach dem Materiale des Herzogl.
Naturalien-Kabinets in Gotha; Volume II ( 870-8 ). We have of the 7 monographs, of
which one does not have the plates, it however contains the superbly produced monograph
by Zittel in large folio 'Die Fauna der älteren cephalopenführenden Tithonbildungen';
Volume III ( 87 -82), complete and bound 2 vols containing 20 monographs.
With 892 lithographed plates, all but (as is always the case) beautifully
handcoloured plates. Contemporary half calf. € 0.000
A beautifully preserved set of one of the most splendid works on shells. All published
by Lovell Augustus Reeve. The 'Conchologia Iconica' comprises 20 volumes of which
the continuation volumes to 20 were by G.B. Sowerby. After Reeve's death, Reeve's
widow requested Sowerby to publish the remaining volumes. "It was from his London
emporium in King William Street, Strand, in 8 , that Reeve issued the first part of his
most ambitious and best known work, the Conchologia Iconica, the publication of which
occupied him for the rest of his life... Sowerby was responsible for all the illustrations,
this time employing the medium of lithography ... in most of its illustrations shows the
shells life-size and this accounts for its greater number of volumes. The figures are widely
recognized as the most accurate and the most beautiful of all those published prior to
the widespread use of photographic reproductions. The Cuming collection was Reeve's
principal source of illustrative material" (Dance pp. 2 - 22).
frontispieces and 79 engraved plates (on 79 sheets), mostly double-page.
A very clean, fresh copy in first edition of the first comprehensive flora of the East Indies,
containing the first illustrations of a great number of tropical and sub-tropical plants and
fruits. Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede, born in 6 7 in the castle Draakesteyn, near De Vuursche,
a village in the province of Utrecht, became the colonial governor of Malabar, on
the south-west coast of India, and from 68 the head of the Dutch East Indies Company
in India. He was an enthusiastic botanist and investigator of the Indian sub-tropical flora,
and was interested in the medical and traditional uses of the plants he encountered. He
had as collaborator Johannes Caesarius, a missionary in Indochina, who edited the first
two volumes, but died before their appearance in print. After his death the editorship was
taken over by Arnold Seyn ( 6 0- 678), the director of the Leiden Botanical Garden, and
by Jan Commelin ( 629- 692). Commelin’s connection with Rheede and other patrons in
the East Indies Company made the Amsterdam Botanical Garden, of which Commelin
was director, the richest in Europe at the time. In 'Philosophical transactions' for 698
8
there is a note by James Petiver saying that the Dutch physician at Batavia, Willem ten
Rhyne, who had served as resident physician at Deshima in Nagasaki Bay, Japan, also
worked for Rheede in collecting and describing plants. As soon as enough material for
a volume had been assembled Rheede sent it home to Holland, where botanists such as
Commelin and others added notes and saw it through the press.
Rheede writes that several artists contributed drawings, but much of the credit he gives
to Pietro Foglia, or Father Matthias, a Neapolitan Discalced Carmelite, ca 6 7- 69 ,
who both drew and engraved many plates. The engraver Bastian Stoopendael ( 6 6- 707)
signed the first plate, which was drawn by Antony Jakob Goedkint. Rheede compiled the
work also with the help of other missionaries, native doctors, native princes, and most
probably native draughtsmen. ‘It is quite clear from the nature of these engravings that
most of them were taken from drawings by Indian artists in Malabar. They show all the
decorative qualities found in the drawings done for the British by Indian artists a century
later, and even the details of techniques are similar. In particular, the tendency for them
to spring straight out of the edge of the paper and to slant diagonally across it are very
characteristic...’ (Hulton and Smith, Flowers in art from East and West).
Each plate has the name of the plant in ‘Latin’ (in fact a transcription of the native name),
Malayalam, Arabic, and Sanskrit. The plates depict both wild and cultivated plants, and
many now familiar tropical fruits and spices. Several plates are devoted to ‘Tenga’, the
coconut palm, the most important economic plant of Malabar. There are also the first
illustrations of a large number of orchids.
Nissen ZBI, 67; Landwehr 6 . A fine uncut uniformly bound copy of one of the
most beautiful entomological publications. This Dutch edition is more attractive than the
original German edition, which was published in Nuremberg from 7 6- 792. The Dutch
edition is printed on almost twice as large, much thicker, paper, and has far better colouring.
The translation was made by C. Kleemann, the son-in-law of the author. He added
new material and the excellent colouring of the plates is by him and his wife Katharina
Barbara Roesel von Rosenhof. Kleemann also published a "Vervolg" with 26 plates, which
was never finished and which is not present as almost always.
86
"Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal
painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After
living in Copenhagen from 726 to 728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there,
besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of
nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation,
and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleeman tells us.
His manuscripts, with 06 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in
Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings ..." (Nissen, Bestiaries).
The work is complete in volumes and the text gives explanations from plates to 00.
A th volume was planned but never published. A few copies exist which have a number
of plates of this unpublished volume. The present work is very rare and the only bibliographies
which mention the book are Nissen, Pritzel and Rehder (The Bradley Bibli-
88
ography). Nissen copies Pritzel and both are calling for 00 plates, 60 numbered, with
additional 0 unnumbered plates illustrating buds.
Pritzel bases his description on a copy in the Royal Library in Vienna. This is certainly in
error as this copy, now in the Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek, has only 28 plates and
has the same number of text-pages as our copy. Our copy has one more plate on buds in
the third volume than other copies. Publication of the work must have been problematic
due to the 'Napoleonic pause' in book production. Three of the plates on buds in the
third volume are original watercolours and it is most likely that the engraved plates were
never made.
This beautifully illustrated work devoted to the native, foreign and exotic trees and shrubs
is splendidly executed in the tradition of the Austrian Golden Period of botanical book
illustration. Franz Johann Schulz was an Austrian botanist and artist. The description of
the ornamental trees, of the fruit trees and of the shrubbery are presented first by means of
an introduction with nomenclature in Latin, German and French, followed by information
on the cultivation and blooming seasons. The images provide scientific information
on flowers, leaves and seeds with a double definition in Latin and German.
A fine complete copy and in some ways a supernumerary copy of the rare French edition
of Seitz' 'Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde'..... The German and English edition
were both published by Kerner Verlag in Stuttgart. Due to the second World War some
volumes remained incomplete. The French edition, however, was published by Eugène Le
Moult ( 882- 967) and also distributed by him. The plates of all three language editions
were printed by Kernen Verlag. The French edition is the least complete edition. Otto
Belgium saw a remarkable revival of botany and plant cultivation during the 9th century.
In 'Hortus Belgicus' this period is called 'the wonder of the 9th century'. Belgian
9
lithographers reached the ultimate of craftmanship in a relatively short period in which
colour printing from stone dominated the scene of botanical illustration. The present rare
botanical work is one of these examples. The fine and beautifully handcoloured plates are
all lithographed by Burggraaff after drawings by G. Severeyns, who became one of Belgium's
most famous lithographers. Van Geel and possibly P.A.J. Drapiez were the editors.
A new edition of this much demanded flower book was published in 8 under the title
"Flore des Serres et de Jardin de Paris". The last volume contains an alphabetical index
of all figured plants. Normally the work is bound in volumes. As this set is bound in 6
volumes, the title pages of the last 2 volumes have the volume number pasted over by a
small paper strip with the imprint 'Tome Cinquième' and 'Tome Sixième'.
A rather poor copy of the famous ornithological section of the 'Fauna Japonica'. Our
copy is not coloured and lacks the title and plate B. About a third of the plates have
marginal damage, nowhere affecting the image. In some cases the cornes have been cut
away. Of some of the plates the paper is bittle and a few are loose. The most important
publication on the avi-fauna of Japan. The text is by Temmick and Schlegel and is written
Turtles drawn from life. Text by John Edwards Gray. London, Sotheran,
plates of which 7 beautifully handcoloured and enhanced with gum arabic,
all drawn on stone by Edward Lear after J.D.C. Sowerby. Original
brown half morocco, gilt lettered spine. € 27.000
First complete edition of this exquisite and rare work on turtles and tortoises. Four men
were responsible for this classic herpetological work, i.e. Thomas Bell as superintendent
of the plates and intended author, James de Carle Sowerby as artist, John Edward Gray as
writer of the text to the final publication of the plates, and Edward Lear as lithographer.
0 plates first appeared in Bell's 'Monograph Testudinata' ( 8 2- 2). This work was never
finished due to the publisher's bankruptcy. The 0 plates together with 20 additional,
previously unpublished, plates were re-issued in 872 by Sowerby and Lear.
The plates were reproductions of paintings by James de Carle Sowerby, produced by the
process of lithography by Edward Lear. Bell was the first person to attempt to write a
comprehensive account of the tortoises, and went to great lengths to acquire living tortoises
which Sowerby was to draw. The book is the most outstanding collection of tortoise
illustrations ever produced.
The unsold parts of Bell's 'Monograph of the Testudinata', together with Sowerby's plates
for the rest of the work were acquired by the publishers Sotheran, who wished to publish
a new edition of the 8 parts, incorporating the remaining plates. As Bell had declined to
write the text for the last plates, it was natural that Gray should have been asked to do it.
In this way, a complete edition of the book Bell had started in 8 2, was finally published
0 years later in 872. It had a new 6 page introduction by Gray.
"The names 'Sowerby and Lear' are forever linked herpetologically as artist and lithographer,
respectively, for the greatest atlas of turtle illustrations and one of the finest productions
among natural history books... Beforer achieving fame as a writer and landscape
painter Lear began as a natural history artist. He issued a series of drawings of parrots
in 8 0- 8 2 and, unlike other zoological artists of the day, specialized in drawing living
animals, which appealed to Bell" (Adler, vol. 2 pp. 6 -62).
First edition. The first book and the only one in folio of a series of publications by Spix
on the zoology of Brasil. It is a very important study of new world primates and bats and
probably the rarest of the series. 6 plates concern monkeys of which handcoloured
and 2 plain plates of skulls. Two plates concern bats. Spix and Martius were selected by
the Bavarian government to take part in an expedition to South America. "Spix and
Martius were the first European scientists to visit the Amazon after La Condamine. Their
collections - including specimens of eighty-five species of mammals, 0 species of birds,
nearly 2,700 species of insects, and fifty-seven living animals, provided material for a vast
number of works by other scientists" (DSB XII, p. 78). The monographs of this scientifically
very important expedition were beautifully produced by the Bavarian government
and printed on thick wove paper. The fine plates are superb examples of early lithography,
especially in Munich. The plates of the present work were lithographed by H.J. Mitterer
after drawings by Michael Schmid and coloured by F. Weishaupt. The text is in Latin and
French. A fine copy of this rare work.
A cornerstone in the study of pollination. First edition of Sprengel's remarkable work,
99
printed in double columns, with 2 plates showing more than 000 drawings of floral
parts, representing over 00 species.
The work was forgotten for over half a century until Darwin brought it back to life and
showed its importance in the discussion on the theory of evolution and descent. Dr. Wilhelm
Junk ( 866- 9 2) stated that Sprengel's case was similar to that of Mendel, whose
'Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden' ( 86 ) remained unnoticed for years. Mendel's paper
and Sprengel's book are both of legendary importance. Christian Konrad Sprengel ( 7 0-
8 6), was rector of the Great Lutheran City School at Spandau, where he taught languages
and natural sciences between 780 and 79 . There in 787, he became fascinated
by the process of pollination when he noticed hairs on the petals of Geranium flowers.
For the next six years he devoted himself with complete absorption to examining and
recording the relations between flowers and their pollinating insects. In 79 he published
his great work, which translates into: 'Revelation of the secret of nature in the construction
and fertilization of the flower'. This was quite revolutionary for the time. When the
book was published it was no success at all; in fact Sprengel was so depressed by its poor
reception that he abandoned botany. The last plates with insignificant faint dampstain
at the upper margin.
during years of travelling in that country, on which occasion many new species were
discovered. Johann Jacob von Tschudi was a Swiss naturalist and explorer. He studied
zoology under Lorenz Oken and Heinrich Schinz in Zürich. He then went on to study
under the famous naturalist Louis Agassiz in Neuchâtel. In 8 7 the Natural History Museum
in that city commissioned him to create a collection of exotic animals. He went to
animals on vellum for the famous Collection des vélins between the years 826 and 8 6.
The Collection, initiated in 6 , contained work by the finest natural history artists in
France, including Nicolas Robert and Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Werner provided illustrations
for the publication of Dumont d’Urville's expeditions to Australia and the South
Pacific, and also worked with Cuvier, Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, and Henri Ducrotay
de Blainville. Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire named a species of monkey after him.
The animals depicted include many recently discovered on the voyages of Dumont
d’Urville and others. On plate 0 there is a note by Werner to the colourist Alfred Joseph
Annedouche ‘faire l’animal plus forcé’. The published plates were engraved on steel, and
the animals alone were hand-coloured, leaving the backgrounds plain as here.
Provenance: engraved bookplate of Alfred Grandidier ( 8 6- 92 ), French naturalist and
explorer, and author of the monumental 0-volume survey of Madagascar 'Histoire physique,
naturelle et politique de Madagascar' ( 87 - 9 7).
"This magnificent publication... is very rare today" (Barba de Moraes p. ). The present
copy lacks the first plate 'Ateles hypoxanthus, Der Miriki' (a monkey), it also lacks the
descriptive text leaf to the 'Copias Jararaca' and 'Coluber Rabdocephalus'. Most copies
lack the general title, in our copy replaced by the title to the first part.
"Alexander Philipp Maximilian, prince of Wied-Neuwied, one of the great explorer-naturalists
and ethnologists of the 9th century, was also a specialist on reptiles. Wied's first
exploration was in Brazil, where he spent the period 8 - 8 7 studying the natural history
and primitive Indian tribes of the forested areas in the coastal states north of Rio de
Janeiro. His collections were rich in reptiles, especially snakes... Prince Max, as he was
known to his contemporaries, was the first well-trained naturalist to explore Brazil... The
90 plates in 'Abbildungen', 6 of them on reptiles, were taken from originals drawn and
colored by the prince himself, and these formed the basis for his descriptions of many new
species. Most of his specimens are now in New York City, at the American Museum of
Natural History, which purchased his zoological collections" (Adler p. 22).
small paper damage not affecting the text.
The rare first edition of the first large work
on fishes in England, marking a new era in
ichthyology. Although Ray states with his
characteristic modesty to be only the editor of the manuscript of his deceased friend
Willughby ( 6 - 672), his share in compiling the material for the work should not be neglected.
The text was printed at the expense of bishop John Fell (founder of the University
Press), the plates engraved by Paul van Somers under the supervision of Martin Lister at
the expense of several members of the Royal Society of London, among them particularly
the Society's president Samuel Pepys to whom the work is dedicated. One text leaf with
small old repair.
A fine copy of this great classic on the botany of the West Indies and Central America,
together with the supplementary volumes which are of the greatest rarity.
In 76 Jacquin's "Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia", was published of which
only coloured copies exist. 7 years later a larger edition appeared with original watercolours
of which only 8 copies were printed. In order to make this important publication
available to a larger public Zorn published the present 8vo edition with handcoloured
plates on a reduced format. Although not as rare as the coloured Jacquin edition it is
also very scarce. The work is the result of Jacquin's travels in the West-Indies and tropical
America in 7 - 9. The first volume is dated 789 and is a reissue of the 78 edition. The
numbering of the pages of the second work is erratic but agrees with Stafleu & Cowan
and is complete.
