From the editors
Fellow FD sailors,
Again it was not an easy job to present you
with this new issue of the FD Bulletin, but
with the encouraging help of many sailors
and photographers we managed to put something
nice together. Many thanks for your
input and please do continue to send your
comments, articles, reports and remarks to
fdbulletin@gmail.com.
So what do we have for you this time?
Of course, as ever, an enthousiastic letter
from our President, Dott. Alberto Barenghi.
We are greatful for his uplifting contribution.
Dr. Gizmo shines his light on the cleat. The
result is an interesting story about a guy called
Curry and one of his many inventions.
This should refresh your memories a bit.
Our Chief Measurer John Best explains the
ins and outs of some new rule changes. It
seems that there is a bit of confusion, but let’s
be confident that his explanation will be sufficient.
Co-editor Casper made the trip to Altea with
helmsman (and father) Fred and had a chat
with Gines Romero, one of the Spanish top
FD-sailors. It happened to turn out in a serious
interview.
Naturally you will find results from around
the world, pictures and the equipment list of
the WC.
We hope that this FD Bulletin will inspire
you for the coming season.
Be careful flying out on the water!
Happy Sailing,
Flying Dutchman Bulletin 154
Presidents letter
Dear friends,
I thank all of you for the increasing success of
the FD Class during the 2007 sailing season,
as shown by the interest of new sailors in the
FD and our Class activity.
Congratulations and many thanks to
the Centro de Alto Rendimento in Murcia,
the Organizing Committee and to the FD
Spanish Class for the excellent organization
of the 2007 World Championships, in which
72 teams from 14 countries competed.
Moreover, the increasing success of the Euro
Cup and World Cup events show that the
strategy to schedule the International races
calendar with specific and advertised events,
scheduled in different countries, seems to
kindle the interest of the sailors to increase
their participation in the races and to be
involved in Class life.
As always, many thanks to all the Clubs organizing
the FD races every year, since they
help our Class to support and go on to organize
the classical events that have become a
tradition in the annual FD fixtures.
With regard to the women FD teams, my best
congratulations to the German Peggy Bahr,
the Spanish Dolores Sanchez-Herrero and
the Dutch Tanja Heijink for their results and
participation in the most important
International races.
With regard to the technical matters, the increasing
number of carbon riggings adopted
by teams from all countries (in the
International races, more than 40% of the
fleet adopted the carbon profiles) shows the
success of this new tool in the technical development
of the FD.
The manufacturers, from different countries
in the world (UK, Australia, Italia etc.), are
going ahead to push the evolution of carbon
riggings (mast, boom and spinnaker pole with
different profiles, stiffness and fitting) to
reach the best performance and reliability at
the minimum weight that, according to the
Class rules, will be 8.5 kg.
The competition among the manufacturers
and the increasing interest of the teams to
4
compare different technical solutions will
allow the carbon riggings to have a further
and fast evolution.
With regard to Class life and promotion there
is some important news.
In spring 2008, the first three years of the
sponsorship agreement between the IFDCO
and Harken Sailing Wear will end.
During these first three years of the sponsorship
contract Harken Sailing Wear supplied
our Class with several clothes of their sportswear
collections.
Two weeks ago I went to the Winch - Harken
Sailing Wear headquarters, where I met the
team managers. During that excellent meeting
the IFDCO and Winch confirmed their
reciprocal interest in their brands and so, we
agreed to go on with a new sponsorship
agreement until the end of 2012.
In a few weeks Winch will show me the next
spring-summer and fall-winter collections for
2008. Moreover, besides the actual Harken
Sailing Wear, WINCH will add a further collection
with several models inspired by the
FD’s history and emotion.
Those clothes, sporting both the Harken -
Winch and IFDCO logos, will be available for
each FD Class member with a special discount.
In detail, the Harken Crew Collection will
always be available with several clothes (jackets,
polos, gilets, t-shirts etc.) in several
colours and sizes. Moreover, every
year Winch will develop and produce fallwinter
and spring-summer collections, in
which some articles will be selected that show
the IFDCO logo.
As always, it will be possible to look at the
Harken Sportswear Collections with the FD
logo on the IFDCO website and in the FD
Bulletin. Moreover, there will be a link
between the IFDCO and the Harken website.
Together with a lot of enthusiastic sailors who
have granted the worldwide success of the
FD Class Harken will be inspired by the most
peculiar feature of the FD Class: to be sporting
high-tech and innovative solutions.
For the same reason, the IFDCO has chosen
Harken Sailing Wear as brand to
perform the sportswear for the FD
teams.
The IFDCO, selling the sportswear
to the Class members, will collect
money to spend for the Class promotion,
advertisement and activity.
For instance, it will be very important
to help the young and new FD
sailors, increase the participation to
specific events and support the
transport of boats attending the
World Championships overseas.
In 2007 the result of that strategy
SLO-1 Luka Tomori & Urban Jan
allowed the IFDCO to give a grant of
€ 900 to every container shipped to Spain
from overseas, attending the Worlds in Mar
Menor.
That represents just the first step of the
IFDCO’s activities to support our teams.
Anyway, that process requires time and the
cooperation of Class members, National
Secretaries, etc. to show and improve the
advantages to the sailors.
Again in 2008, the IFDCO will be engaged in
selling the sailing wear in order to give grants
to support the IFDCO’s activities, in particular
the shipping of containers to the next
Worlds in New Zealand.
With regard to the sailing activity in 2008,
besides the classical races—and particularly
the Euro Cup events—we’ll meet in Rabac
(Croatia) next May to attend the European
Championships there.
The meeting in Rabac will be the best chance
to award the Euro Cup and Dawes Cup for
2007. Moreover, we will have the
Competitors Hearings, the National
Secretaries’ meeting and the AGCM.
With regard to the sailing activity in 2008,
however, the most important news will be the
Vintage Yachting Games: the event that has
been proposed one year ago by Dutch sailor
Rudy den Outer, ex FD sailor and currently
Soling helmsman.
Rudy proposed to create and organize a
event comparable to the Olympic Games,
aimed at the former Olympic Classes. For this
reason he contacted me for the Flying
Dutchman.
The event will be organized every four years,
like the Olympiade. The first edition will be
held in Medemblik, Holland, on 20-
27 September 2008.
I showed this proposal to the IFDCO
Officers at the last AGCM and the National
Secretaries’ Meeting in Spain and it was
agreed to join the Vintage Yachting Games.
The other Classes involved will be: Europe,
O-Jolle, Soling and Dragon.
The aims of the VYG have been explained, as
well as the selection criteria to adopt by every

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 154
CRO-51
Tin Matulja & Robin Matulja
Class, through the International Classes and
their National Secretaries. The VYG goal will
be to have 2 boats per Country in every Class.
Personally, I think that the VYG represent a
particular event that is excellently suitable to
remember the history of our Class and advertise
and promote our Class to the media, network,
sponsors and to the sailors.
With regard to the Measurement Committee,
according to my proposal, the VYG decided to
appoint John Best as Chief Measurer in the
event.
Anyway, the Notice of Race for the VYG 2008
is quite ready and will be sent to every FD
National Secretary in a few days.
The season 2008 will go on with the classical
races and the “Conrad Gulcher Trophy”,
a classical event for the FD Class, as
always organized by the Loosdrecht Sailing
Club.
Finally, we ‘ll have the World Championships
in Napier, New Zealand during the Christmas
holidays.
Many sailors seem interested to attend the
Worlds and, as always, Frank Nooijen will be
engaged to provide us with the best solution
for transportation.
Strengthened by the IFDCO’s team approach
and the friendship among all the Officers,
Commodores, Sub Committees and National
Secretaries, we will continue to promote,
advertise and develop the FD Class in every
way.
Together with new sponsorships to support
Class activities and events it is very important
to promote the FD Class to the media, network
and sponsors and to improve the
IFDCO website.
For this purpose it was agreed to develop the
website’s graphics and aesthetic aspects: it is
quite ready and will be online in a few weeks.
Let’s commit ourselves all together, in order
to support and quicken every process to
advertise the FD!
Finally, let me thank all the FD sailors and the
IFDCO Officers engaged in the life and activities
of our Class.
I ‘m looking forward to meeting all of you and
I wish everyone good sailing in 2008!
Alberto
Interview with Gines Romero - Altea, 9 February 2008
Ten years ago the Spanish FD class was almost
history. Today Spain has one of the most active
Flying Dutchman fleets around the world. The
man responsible for this success is Gines
Romero, the well-known helmsman of the
ESP-6. We tried to see what he had to say
about all this himself.
(by Casper Schaaf)
Could you introduce yourself?
My name is Gines Romero. I started to sail
when I was four years old, with my father on
the Mar Menor.
In what kind of boat?
We had a very old wooden boat, very strong
and heavy; 5 metres or something. I broke my
first mast there on the Mar Menor – a wooden
mast – with my father.
I started racing more or less seriously in the
420 and I tried my first Flying Dutchman in ‘76
in a Spanish championship when I was 17
years old. Francisco Martinez, now ESP-81,
was my crew; he was 19 years old. We were
third! We came from the 420 and only one
week before the championship we tried the
FD. We’d lent a boat, we did this race and it
was okay.
And afterwards?
After the 420 I sailed the 470 from 1982 until
1989. Then from ‘89 till ‘94 I sailed the Soling
and finally the FD again, during the European
Championship in Murcia in 1997, eleven years
ago. Besides that I did some Vaurien and
Snype as well, but seriously only 420, 470,
Soling and FD.
I heard you were quite successfull in the Soling.
Yes, I prepared the Barcelona Olympics in
Soling. I was in the pre-Olympic team, but
wasn’t selected to go. I was successfull in Spain
– among the best 6 teams or so - , especially
with strong wind. Actually, I’ve always been at
my best with a lot of wind, in the 470 as well.
Internationally, though, I didn’t do so well.
Actually, I see myself as a better trainer than a
sailor. I know very well how to do it, but I
don’t know how to do it, if you know what I
mean. I prefer to teach others than to do it
myself. I’m not very intuitive, I’m a worker.
When I go well it’s because I train many hours
and prepare the boat many hours, but I’m not
so efficient.
It’s exactly like the Bojsen-Møllers said: hours
and hours upon the water and then you can do
well.
Some people do very well with not so many
hours. Luis Doreste (winner of the Flying
Dutchman gold medal in the Barcelona
Olympics – CS), for example, sailed more with
intuition than training. I think, in general,
Spanish sailors are more intuitive than workers.
Yes, if you look at Marco Sevila. He’s just 17
and already shows a lot of talent.
Yes, he’s the future of the Spanish class.
So you started sailing FD again in 1997. What
made you decide to do that?
Yes, after I’d stopped sailing for three or four
years - because of my daughters and work and
such things – I started again to sail the Flying
Dutchman in 1997. You see, for me it’s impossible
to stay without sailing. I was working
too much during those years and I needed to
sail again. I selected the Flying Duthman
because it’s not an Olympic class. It’s the boat
of my dreams, but not Olympic, which was
perfect for me at that time. I was very tired of
Olympic classes, with the Soling and 470. In
both classes I tried to be in the Olympic
Games – Los Angeles in 1984 and Barcelona
in 1992 – but finally the environment was too
competitive for me.
And the Spanish FD class at that time?
I became the Secretary of the class. The
Spanish class was absolutely dead in 1997;
there were only one or two other boats
besides myself at that time. But we pushed
and pushed, convinced one guy, another guy
and now the class has about twenty boats.
Not all of them sailing, but well.
No, but you have some very good teams.
There’s about 6 or 7 really good teams in
Spain.
Yes, two years ago in the Spanish champi-
5

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 154
onship we beat the record. We were sailing on
the Mar Menor then and apart from a few
foreign teams there were 17 Spanish boats in
the water. I think that was the absolute
record in the history of the Spanish Flying
Dutchman class.
So, since 1997 it’s been going upwards constantly?
Every year a bit more?
Well, in the last two years it’s been going a little
bit down. I’m a bit tired: always pushing,
pushing, pushing forwards, calling people to
go to the races. If people needed a boat, I’d
look for a boat here and there. It’s very hard
work and I have my own work!
What kind of work do you do?
I work for big multinational consultancy firm,
Cap Gemini, where I’m managing the
Barcelona, Valencia and Murcia offices. I’ve
been working with Cap Gemini for the last
twenty years.
And at the moment you are still the Spanish
National secretary?
Yes, but I’m trying to convince Javier Higuera
– the crew of Dolores, ESP-9 – to take over
the job. I can help him, but I prefer that he
pushes. Otherwise I’m afraid the Spanish
class may be going down again. In the last two
years I’ve not been pushing the same as
before.
Last year’s World Championship, you still
organised that?
No, I didn’t, it was organised by the Murcia
Federation. We helped a little bit, but the
6
FD
organisation was theirs.
I thought they did quite a nice job.
I don’t agree. I didn’t like the organisation.
Why not?
I thought it was a bit ordinary. The sailing was
okay, but the organisation wasn’t so good.
Yes, I suppose they didn’t really try hard for us.
We were probably their tenth championship
that year or something.
Yes, this was the problem. They tried to do
too many events in one year. But the venue
there is fantastic, for sailing. The weather was
not the usual weather in this stage of the year
though. Only during the last day we sailed
with the typical wind there. Normally the
wind is more like the week before, during the
Spanish Championchips.
And what do you think about the Worlds in
New Zealand?
We want to go there. There are four or five
teams interested in the possibility of going.
We are talking to a shipping company about
containers, but I’m not sure. Three or four
Spanish boats should really be possible
though. We’ll probably have to share a container
with the Italians or something like that.
Because of the container business the next
Euro Cup in Altea will be a problem, I’m
afraid.
Yes, we should probably move the event.
Maybe in March or April; maybe Easter, I
don’t know. The best way to do it would be to
send the containers directly from Napier to
Valencia actually. But we’ll talk with the
Altea sailing club and we’ll try to get it
moved.
Have you thought about the Europeans in
Croatia already?
Yes, we’ll organize some training weekends
here in Altea to prepare for Croatia. The
event is a bit early for me because I’m still
working then, but I’ll certainly try to be there.
And probably about 4 other Spanish teams as
well.
If I may ask, how old are you now?
I’m 49, since last Sunday.
NORTH SAILS GULF COAST
And what are you plans for the future? Just
FD?
I plan to compete in the Flying Dutchman
maybe 5 years more. I don’t think I’ll stay in
the class until 60. Last year I bought a new
boat which I plan to sail for another four or
five years, but not a new boat.
What did you sail with before this boat?
The one I started with in 1997 was an old one
I bought from Anton Schwarz, with a wooden
deck, from 1985 I think. I sailed with that
until the championship in Elba, in 2000.
Before Gilleleje in 2001 I drove past Mader
to pick up a new boat. That’s the boat
Dolores is sailing with now, with the yellow
deck. And so, last year I bought a new Mader.
I think this will be my last Flying Dutchman
boat. The boat is like my body though, it gets
older but it’s still going on.
Manfred Curry’s legacy
Manfred Curry was born in Germany in 1899,
emigrated to the US and became a citizen of
that country. He died in 1953, just in time to
witness the birth of our beloved FD. He actually
sailed in one of the prototypes of the boat.
Curry was, and probably still is, the most successful
German born yacht racer. He bagged
more than 1000 victories. But even more than
through his yacht racing, Curry’s legacy lives
on because of his work as a sailing-aerodynamics
pioneer and through his inventions. It
was Curry who first introduced a jib that overlapped
with the mainsail. He, very successfully,
first used this jib in a regatta near the
Italian town of Genoa in the 1930’s.As a result
of this success the ‘Genoa’, as it was henceforth
called, remained there to stay.
Curry’s true ticket to fame, however, was his
invention of a device that nowadays is featured
in multitude on almost any sailing boat:
the cam cleat. In German, and also in the
Dutch language, this cleat bears the name of
its inventor: Curryklemme. Of course,
Anglophonic sailors cannot stomach the
thought of referring to a German and consequently
never use the term. Rather would
they honor Briggs Swift Cunningham II, who
invented nothing less that the hole in the sail
that proudly bears his name. The French, for
whom the world ends at the frontiers of their
beloved ‘Hexagon’, refrain from ever mentioning
Curry’s name; they irreverently call
the cleat a ‘taquet coinceur’. And the Italians?
Well, are they aware that the Roman empire
ceased to exist some time ago?
Simple as its principle may seem, Curry’s cam
cleat is a much cleverer device than meets the
eye at first sight. Its secret lies in the geometry
of its two jaws each of which is shaped like a
part of a mathematical object called the logarithmic
spiral. This spiral, shown in Fig. 1, has
18
a number of distinguished features: it is a self
similar graph, which means that from whatever
distance it is viewed, it always looks identical.
Secondly, if we look at the angle at which
any part of the spiral intersects a straight line
extending out from the origin to infinity, we
see that this angle is always the same, as is
immediately clear from Fig. 1. Likewise, the
spiral intersects any circle at the same angle.
This angle is called the pitch of the spiral. The
spiral forms a constant-angle curve and it is
this property that gives cam cleats their essential
properties: they hold a variety of rope
diameters and their holding power is independent
of this diameter and they always hold
tight, independent of the force on the rope.
Also, the cleat is insensitive to the precise
direction of the pull of the rope.
A special logarithmic spiral is one with a pitch
of about 17 0 . This so-called golden spiral is
closely related to the Fibonacci series and the
Golden Ratio, both favorites in mathematics
as well as in renaissance art. The pitch of the
jaws of Curry’s cleat is slightly bigger, typically
about 20 0 .
Fig. 1. A logarithmic spiral with a pitch of 10 0 .
Nature seems to have a preference for mathematical
beauty and, indeed, logarithmic spirals
appear all around us: for example in the shape
of the shells of certain mollusks, in tropical
storms (see Fig. 2), and in spiral galaxies. An
interesting technical application is the so
called ‘friend’, a device inserted into vertical
cracks by rock climbers as protection against
falls. The friend is basically an inverted cam
cleat (see the drawing at the right of Fig. 2).
How cam cleats work
Let us have a look at exactly how the cam
cleat manages to prevent a rope from slipping.
Firstly, let us ignore the fact that the jaws of
the cleat have a jagged inner edge and that the
rope is fluffy and compressible. Now look at
Fig. 3. The beak of the cleat is represented by
two logarithmic spirals. Of course, in a real
cleat the jaws form only a segment of the spiral,
but as long as the rope diameter is in the
right range this does not matter. If we analyze
the forces on the rope and the cleat, we see the
following: the rope is held taught by a tension
force T. If the rope is not to slip, each cam of
the cleat must supply half this force as a reaction
force. This reaction force originates from
the axel of the cam. Looking at Fig. 3 we see
that the torque exerted by this pair of forces
tends to make the blades of the cleat rotate.
This rotation is prevented because the rope
pushes back on the cams. The balance of
torques requires that the size if this so called
‘normal’ force N be just ½T times the ratio of
the two lever arms. This ratio is 1/ tan α, where
a is the pitch of the spiral. For a = 20 0 the ratio
is slightly bigger than 3 and it does not depend
on the width of the gap between the jaws. The
rope will stay put if the friction force that the
cleat can supply is large enough. It is a wellestablished
fact in physics that the maximum
friction between two objects is just the normal
force multiplied by a constant called the coefficient
of friction. This friction coefficient
depends on the two materials and to some
extent on surface roughness. Thus, we find that
our cleat works if the friction coefficient
between our rope and the material of the
cams is bigger than tan a or about 1/3. It clearly
is. Even if we were to replace the rope by a
Fig. 2. Examples of logarithmic spirals in nature and technology: Nautilus shell tropical storm and the cams of a ‘friend’, a device used as fall protection
in rock climbing.

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 154
wooden rod, the cleat would still hold it. If
you have a cam cleat in your tool box you
can try it at home if you don’t believe me.
The cleat will not hold a polished steel rod:
The friction coefficient between this material
and the aluminum of the jaws is below 1/3.
Fig. 3 Forces on the blades of a cam cleat:
The ratio of the normal force N and the tension
and friction forces T/2 is set by the nonrotation
equilibrium of the blades. This ratio
depends only on the pitch of the spiral and
is equal to tan α.
You don’t have to be a rocket engineer to
reinvent the wheel. It appears though that it
helps if you want to reinvent the cam cleat.
In 1978, a guy called Ray Jardine who was an
aeronautics engineer, as well as a keen rock
climber, invented the already mentioned
‘friend’, a spring loaded camming device for
rock climbing based on the logarithmic spiral.
These devices are designed to withstand
shock loads of a falling climber which can
easily exceed 10 times his body weight. As
with our cleats, friends, in principle, always
hold, because the friction coefficient
between the aluminum blades and the rock
exceeds the tangent of the pitch angle of the
blades (which in this case is about 14 0 ). The
normal force exerted by the rock on the
cams can be several tons. Climbers can be
fairly confident that the device does not slip
and they can only hope that their friend can
withstand the huge forces without breaking
apart. Fortunately for them, most of the time
their hope is vindicated.
Anyway, the next time you sail and you pull
in the sheet of your genoa and lodge it firmly
into its Curryklemme, spare a thought for
Measurement thoughts
This year’s rule changes
You will all be well aware that this year there
are a few rule changes taking place. One, the
mast weight, has been eagerly awaited, but
there are various others which I will try to put
into context.
New Rule
58. The Weight of the Mast (excluding trapeze
hooks, shroud length adjustment systems
and baby stays) must not be less than a
minimum of 8.5 kg. Mast corrector weights of
lead must be permanently attached to the
mast above the limit mark (band) No.1.
The height of the centre of gravity of the mast
must not be less than a minimum of 2500 mm
above the top of Limit Mark (band) Number
1.
The previous rule was crafted in 2004 to allow
a period of transition for the class to adopt
carbon masts. This transition period was
scheduled to end in 2008, and so the carbon
mast proviso is now superfluous.
New Rule
90. RRS 50.4 shall not apply to the FD class.
RRS 50.4 attempts to define the difference
between headsails and spinnakers, but unfortunately
no existing genoas or jibs qualify as
headsails under this rule. Presumably, therefore,
they have to be regarded as spinnakers
and class rule 113 limits the sail inventory for
a regatta series to only one spinnaker! Thus,
in order for us to continue to use two genoas
the class requires to be exempt from RRS
50.4 as is permitted by the RRS.
New Rule
39. Weight
The hull weight, including all fixed and moveable
fittings (trapeze hooks, shroud length
adjustment systems, and baby stays), buoyancy
apparatus as prescribed in Rules 44-47
(whether removable or fixed) and running
gear, but not including main, genoa and spinnaker
sheets, must not be less than a minimum
of 130.0 kg.
The way this rule is now written is just to
make it clear that these items, which would
normally be part of the ERS defined rigging,
are not included in the mast weight but must
therefore be included in the hull weight. It
will save all those long and involved discussions
at measurement, sorry, regatta inspection
and will allow us all to get on with our
lives.
20
New Rule
33. Deck
The deck shall not be higher than 10mm
above the deck line and must also be below
the deck line at the mast partners. The deck
line is the imaginary line between the top of
the transom at the centreline and the highest
point of the stem (excluding stem fittings).
Instruction: Erect a taut line 150 mm above
both the stem and the top of the transom, i.e.
parallel to the deck line. The mast partners
must be at least 150 mm below this line and
the rest of the deck at least 140 mm below
this line.
The original FD rule was that all the deck had
to be below the deck line and gave the FD its
aesthetically pleasing lines. Some years ago
the rule was changed in order to emphasise
that the mast partners were not allowed to
support the mast at a point above the deck
line. The rule 68, for band #1, was also
changed to require this band to be below the
deck level (so that this could be easily seen)
rather than the deck line (which could be an
arbitrary distance above the deck level).
It was only recently realised that rule 33
allows an arched deck, similar to the 505, provided
only that the mast partners are below
the deck line. This is definitely not what the
IFDCO wants. It would be ideal to go back to
the original deck line, but unfortunately there
are some FD’s bobbing about out there
which now have decks which are some 10mm
above the deck line, and so, to accommodate
these boats the above rule has been written.
Call it housekeeping.
New Rules
49. The Trapeze Harness may be attached
directly or indirectly to a trapeze wire or line
but only by means of a single quick release
system (2 seconds). The weight of the trapeze
harness must not exceed a maximum of 4.0 kg
and shall float after complete immersion. The
trapeze harness is separate from and shall not
constitute a personal buoyancy aid, as
required by rule 78. 78. The following must
always be carried on board:
2 paddles, minimum length 1000mm, each of
minimum weight 0.25 kg.
2 adequate personal buoyancy aids, defined
as devices worn around the upper part of the
torso, capable of 50 N buoyancy and meeting
the European CEN or an equivalent standard. The
trapeze harness shall not be considered
a personal buoyancy aid.
It is important to emphasize that, although
the trapeze harness must float, it is not a personal
buoyancy aid. Furthermore, buoyancy
added to the back and lower parts of a trapeze
harness could lead to a crew floating
upside down, or at least face down. The personal
buoyancy aid must have floatation on
the chest and be a separate item of equipment.
New standards for PFD’s (personal floating
devices) and the quick release hooks on trapeze
belts are being developed and will no
doubt be implemented by ISAF when completed.
We were presented with a PFD with a
trapeze hook attached to it, i.e. a combined
device. This is not acceptable, as FD class
rules require both a 50N PFD and the trapeze
belt to float! Although buoyancy built into a
trapeze harness is acceptable and essential, it
does not qualify as a PFD. A separate PFD
for the crew must be on board when racing,
and worn when the Y Flag is flying.
New Rule
71. Except when in the centre plane of the
mast spar, the central axis of the boom spar
shall intersect the mast spar centre plane at a
distance of not more than 60mm from the aft
edge of the mast spar.
It was observed that a number of goosenecks
had the vertical axis of rotation some distance
from the aft face of the mast. No problem,
this had the dual advantages of slackening
the foot tension of the mainsail as one
bore away and allowing the boom to be carried
more square on the run. There is no
intention to forbid this practice, but in the
interests of safety it is suggested that this be
limited, if allowed to go to excess this can and
will put an unacceptable torque on the mast
and could easily lead to mast failure.
Specifying such a rule in other classes has
lead to the above wording. The 60 mm limit
was chosen by taking a walk around the boat
park at an International regatta and based on
common practice in the class.
There you have it Ladies and Gentlemen. The
rules may seem a dry old thing to write about,
but they are there for our Health and safety.
A bit like speed cameras really; they are
there for your safety too! When Peter
Hinrichsen drafted these rules he was doing a
bit of housework, cleaning up the rule book
and also ensuring that what we think of as an
FD remains an FD. If anybody has any
queries, both Peter and I can be quite easily
contacted via e-mail or even snail mail.
Port
Off the water
The event will have full family friendly
social programme. Daytime trips to
attractions such as wineries and the
famous Hastings Farm ers Market wi ll be
The Sail ing
Napier offers world class sailing conditions
and facilities.
There are fantastic facilities ashore with a
lot of space at the sailing club and many
launching ramps. I t is a short sail from the
very protected harbour out to the
racecourse.
The predominant wind for January is a sea
breeze from the East to North East at 8
to12 knots with 1 to 2 m etre swell. This
typical wind combined with the ocean swell
provides fantastic downwind sailing.
The other com mon wind is an offshore
gradient northwesterly – typically 12 to 17
knots.
Current is less than one knot and even
across the racecourse area.
The Napier Sailing Club is very experienced
in running national and international
events. http: // n a p iersailingclub.org.nz/
