ART GALLERY OPENS The Crossroad inmate art gallery is officially up and running for all visitors to see. CBi held a special evening of dedication in early fall. guests enjoyed a night of music, food, fellowship and of course, art. The gallery currently has 49 pieces of art selected from hundreds of submissions by CBi students. The artwork is professionally framed and lit to highlight the artistic talents of the students. The themes, materials used, and art forms vary, ranging from pencil and paper to colored deodorant and cloth. The formal presentation began with Dr. David schuringa summarizing a Christian view of art. He said the gallery not only uniquely honors CBi students but will also improve the lives of those who view the art so that, as abraham Kuyper explained, we might glorify god, drink at the fountain of higher pleasures and learn of a higher reality than is offered to us by this sinful and corrupted world. Kim Harris vanderlende, curator of the gallery, then gave a stimulating lecture to introduce the gallery, pointing out the context, materials, themes and meaning of various pieces of artwork. a DvD of this special evening will be available in the online store. The gallery is open for viewing monday through Friday at the CBi headquarters in grandville, michigan. group visits are welcome. 6
Children’s Bible Study Brings Hope for the Family by Danielle deJonge a woman recently called CBi concerned about a piece of mail sent to her eight year old son, Zach. it was a CBi “manga messiah” graphic novel of the gospels and the first Bible study lesson from the ministry’s new children’s program. “Who requested this Bible study for my son?” the woman demanded over the phone to Crossroad Bible institute manager, Jan vander veen. Taken aback, Jan explained that the children’s enrollment forms are given to adult CBi students to pass on to their kids. “Do you possibly know someone who is incarcerated who could have sent it to your son?” “Well,” the woman said, “yes—my ex-husband, Billy.” she continued, “He doesn’t even know he is the father of Zach and Zach just thinks of Billy as a friend.” it gradually dawned on Jan that the woman was speaking in joyful tones rather than with inflections of anger. However, Jan had to tell the woman truthfully that she couldn’t find Billy in the CBi student body. she suggested that perhaps Billy had received the enrollment form from another prisoner. “He does see a lot of people because he cuts hair at the prison,” the woman responded. Jan tracked down Zach’s enrollment form and realized Billy must have filled out the enrollment form with the information about Zach. “Well, what do i owe you?” the mother asked. “nothing. it’s free.” Then, a flurry of questions: “Can my older son take the course? are there any studies i can take? Could you pray for Billy and his relationship with Jesus?” “Yes!” said Jan. Finally, the woman asked timidly, “But what can I do for Billy?” Jan replied, “let’s send him an enrollment form.” One phone call and one children’s Bible study may have pointed this broken family in the direction of hope and healing. A stronger sense of loneliness and depression can overcome them as the forgotten ones. One way that CBI is being used by God to bring some Christmas joy to them is through the 2009 Send-A-Card Program. To participate, please follow the instructions below 1 Select an appropriate English or Spanish Christmas card. 2 Add a special greeting, encouragement or Bible verse, if you wish. (CBI will personalize it with a student’s name.) 3 Sign only your first name or “A brother/ sister in Christ.” 4 Place the card in its blank envelope, but DO NOT SEAL. 5 Mail the card(s) and blank envelope to CBI between now and November 9. Mailing guidelines 1 Each card must fit into a 6 x 9 envelope. 2 Do not include cards or envelopes with foil, stickers, glitter, glue, pop-up parts or paint. And please, No Homemade Layered Cards. 3 Do not put postage stamps on the envelopes. 4 No unsigned cards will be accepted. CArDS THAT DO NOT COMPLy wITH THESE GuIDELINES CANNOT BE uSED BECAuSE MOST FACILITIES wILL NOT ACCEPT THEM.
