Vice Chancellor's Message
Another year has passed, and the overall environment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been bleak throughout. Militancy is
continuing unabated, and universities funding is still erratic. One of our sister universities' vice chancellor has been a
hostage with militants for over a year, and security concerns continue to impact many activities of the university. In these
testing times, UET strives to perform well, and has not done too poorly in our affairs.
Our regular work of education is continuing apace, and programs are on schedule. We are striving for deeper linkages with
industry, government and sister academic institutions. We are building on our academic partnership with Cambridge
University and are working with Bradford University to start a dual-degree program in Industrial Engineering.
A university role is not limited to the class or distribution of testimonials. We also have the onerous responsibility to convert
the academic intellect into relevant adaptive research that can result in marketable prototypes. While all departments are
focused on this, of particular mention is the Earthquake Engineering Center, Center for Intelligent Systems and Network Research and National Institute
of Urban Infrastructure Planning. Our faculty and students have published more than 85 research papers, presented more than 50 papers in conferences,
and are working on more than 110 research projects.
The HR assets are improving day by day. We now have a faculty of more than 70 with Ph.D degrees, and more than 100 are pursuing their Ph.D program
overseas. We are selecting another batch of more than 100 Ph.D scholarships available that need to be filled. Jalozai Campus is a 6.65 billion project, and
is coming along smoothly. We are anticipating start of classes in Fall-2012.
A recent addition to our academic pursuits is establishment of a campus at Kohat. This Campus has been started by “adopting” the Electrical Engineering
– Communications program of Kohat University of Science and Technology, and is currently housed in rented premises. The Governor, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, and the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are facilitating provision of land on which a permanent campus will be constructed. We intend
to add Electrical-Power and Gas and Petroleum Engineering Programs.
We are planning to upgrade Mardan Campus by adding two new departments there. The faculty and infrastructure is already available. The Continuing
Engineering Center is now active throughout the year with training programs. Technology Incubation Center now has four incubatee start-ups. And we
have established an office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) to take research from class rooms to laboratories to prototype
development and commercialization.
Extra-curricular activities have become an integral and robust part of our activities. Workshops, seminars, quest talks, exhibitions, debates, open houses
and sports are routine affairs throughout the year.
