Baseco (or Barangay 649, Zone 68, District V) is a
reclaimed area under the Philippine Ports
Authority at the Port Area, Manila. Most houses
are built on stilts, commonly about 2 meters
above seawater. The makeshift houses are within
the premises of the port.
Recent survey conducted by the Office of the
Barangay Chairwoman shows a total population
of 45,017 with a total number of households at
3,499. Unemployment rate is high at 40% a year
with labor population growing at steady rate of
60% a year. Barangay Profile 2001 list common
occupations such as laborer, carpenter,
stevedore, fishermen, and land and water
transport worker, retailer/vendor and some blue
collared employee or working professional.
The barangay has a history of gang riots between
migrant Moslem groups and Christian groups.
Barangay Chairman Generoso Hispano Jr. when
elected in 1997 was able to keep peace among
warring groups but he was killed in an ambush in
2000.
