elcome to the first issue of ‘Hands Up For Kinder’ newsletter for
W2010 from Chatswood Public School.
Evidence indicates that forming and strengthening the link between school
and the community ensures more efficient planning for the transition to
school. This newsletter will provide current information on Kindergarten
activities and other events at our school to families of children preparing
to enter school in the Chatswood area. Any suggestions and comments for
the next issue of “Hands Up for Kinder” in June are most appreciated.

Digging in the
soil investigating
worms and observing
plant life are just two ways
in which our Kindergarten
students are identifying ways
in which living things are
different and have different
needs. This has been a
focus for our Kindergarten
students this term. The
highlight of this learning
was creating a ‘worm
farm’ with the assistance
of the Environmental
Education Centre Field of
Mars.

AROUND THE SCHOOL
Last Tuesday 92 Year 4 students went
to Camp Yarramundi. Everyone had a
great time and the activities such as rock
climbing, low ropes,
cave maze, flying squirrel
and bush craft were both challenging
and enjoyable. For some students this
was their first camp and they had to be
extremely brave and independent. Year 4
are now really looking forward to their
Year 5 camp next year.

LISTENING
When we think of
school, we usually
think mainly about the skills of
reading and writing – however being able
to communicate with other children and
with adults is also very important.
Children need to develop ways of sharing
their ideas and ways of listening and
responding to others.
How can you help at home?
Encourage your child to talk about
different topics
Ask your child questions starting
with what, who, where, when and
why to encourage more information
Encourage your child to explain
their reasoning to you when they
are making decisions
