Study direction: Technomathematics
This choice of study is of particular interest to those who like applying
mathematical processes in key technologies. You get your second foothold
in an application-oriented technical subject (Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering or Process Engineering) and strive for a
job in the area of Research and Development in a technology-oriented
company.

Why study mathematics? I’ve been fascinated
with numbers since my childhood. I wanted
to study something practical, not just pure
mathematics. That’s why I chose Technomathematics,
because in this application-oriented
subject, many mathematical principles are
put into practice. And conversely, I was able to
better understand the technical derivations and
their intentions through math lectures.
Why study in Magdeburg? Magdeburg appealed to me as a place to
study for many reasons. Most importantly Magdeburg offered Technomathematics
and the Otto von Guericke University has just the right
size. I was also enticed by the city’s many parks, the low rents and the
absence of tuition fees.
Study direction: Business Mathematics
This field is particularly suited for students who are interested in
applying mathematical methods to solve economic problems. The student
chooses Economics as a second subject, which is developed into
a second area of study. Optimisation and Stochastics play an important
role from a mathematical point of view and are intensively taught in
the third year.
By studying Business Mathematics, you are well prepared for a broad
range of jobs in industry and administration. You qualify to work in
the areas of medicine, pharmacy, telecommunications, banking, insurance
and solar technology.
Why study mathematics? It’s hard to imagine
what the frequency allocation of telephone
antennas has to do with hotel room reservations.
Mathematically they represent the same
problem. Thinking in abstract structures is what
makes mathematics fascinating to me.
Why study in Magdeburg? The university
Kathrin Niermann not only offers good facilities, it also offers
optimum student/teacher ratios thanks to its
size. The degree programme prepares the student for a job in business
as well as for a career in science. I found the scientific aspect of the
programme so interesting that I stayed on at the university in order to
do a PhD.
Counselling, Applications and Admissions Standards
There are no admissions restriction for the Mathematics Programme.
Admission requires the general qualification for university entrance
(Abitur) or an equivalently recognised fulfilment of admissions
requirements.
