introduCtion
WJ have been playing a significant role in South Africa’s rich mining history since
1964 and has established itself as a leader in the design and manufacture of a wide
variety of shaft conveyances (i.e. skips and cages) and has produced and erected
numerous steel structures.
In collaboration with the input of our valued customers, WJ has developed innovative
designs and methods of fabricating that not only save our clients’ time and money,
but provides a workable and long-term quality solution. This strive has lead to the
development of our motto, namely “engineering solutions through innovation”. WJ
aims to supply their customers with solutions by developing new designs by digging
into our wealth of knowledge of almost 50 years.
Some of WJ’s recent achievements:
• The manufacture and transport of a 9.5 x 4.5 x 7.4 m man/material cage with
a mass of 58 tons and its counterweight with a mass of 80 tons;
• The design and fabrication of a 31-ton light weight aluminium skip supplied
to the deepest single-drop mine in the world, and;
• Complete water purifying tanks (12 x 6.5 m diametres), workshop fabricated,
transported and erected.
Several South African and international mines are currently operating on skips
designed and manufactured by WJ.
We value our relationships with the different role players involved in the successful
operation of mines and work in close collaboration with mining houses, shaft sinking
and mining consulting companies.

WJ Conveyances (Pty) Ltd, experts in the design and manufacture of mining conveyances

HistorY
WJ, based in Potchefstroom, South Africa, is one of the oldest mining
equipment manufacturing companies in South Africa. It was started in
1964 and has been supplying quality steel structures and conveyances
for the mining and other industries for more than 47 years.
MAnAGinG teAM
Bert Werkman (Snr) started his career as a design engineer in the
mining industry 40 years ago and had designed numerous innovative
conveyance designs. He also served on the National Design Standard
Committee for the mining industry helping to set design standards for
South Africa.
Today, WJ is managed by Bert Werkman (Jnr), Jan Werkman and Jacques
Claassen. As a team we are expanding the company to keep up with the
stringent demands of the mining industry.

WJ’s experience is without parallel, drawing off the skills
and expertise of personnel from a variety of engineering
disciplines. With this personnel’s support we are able to
remain on the forefront of new design and manufacturing
innovations.
trAininG ProGrAMMes
WJ has been involved in training artisans for many years
and is a certified and registered training provider under
MERSETA to train boilermakers, fitters and turners. We
also have a number of learnership programmes that
involve all the aspects of detailing, fabrication and site
erecting.

By doing business with WJ, clients have access to world-class technology. We have the capacity to take on large projects as our manufacturing facilities comprise of a 25 000 m 2 floor and
covered roof area.

serViCes
Specialised Design and Detailing Materials Preparation
The design work is done by means of conventional calculations based on SANS 10208
and refined and checked by our designer by means of three dimensional computer
modelling and subsequent finite element analysis.
WJ has invested in computer aided design over many years. Our draftsmen work with
Solid Edge and Tekla, and they are very proficient in this 3D medium. These programs
allow WJ to produce very accurate design models and detailing on a design, which can
be done in a relatively short time.
Manufacturing and Quality Assurance
WJ Conveyances’ quality management system is ISO9001:2008 approved.
WJ has a machine and plasma shop that supports production activities. The machine
shop is equipped with 5 CNC milling machines, 3 CNC lathes, as well as various manual
milling machines and lathes. CNC wire cutting also forms part of the machine shop
capabilities. The plasma shop consists of 3 CNC plasma cutters which has ample capacity
to serve the fabrication shops.

Sandblasting and Painting
All sandblasting and painting is done in-house with three sandblast pots and a large
undercover painting area to ensure quality corrosion protection to our products.

Workshop Pre-assembly
WJ has unique facilities to assemble large sections of structural steelwork with a
maximum headroom of 12.5 metres.
Site-assembly and Site Erection
WJ has well-established site crew and the necessary equipment and cranes that can
handle up to 80 tons to assemble and erect fabricated products on site.
Product Support and After-sale Service
We pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our clients and have
personnel available to solve complex customer requirements.
