Ben and his dad want to make a kite. Read this story about Ben and his dad and answer
the questions that follow.
Ben and his dad were always looking
for projects to do together. One year, they
built a tricycle out of spare bicycle parts
bought at the junkyard. Once, they dug
out a fish pond for Ben’s mother. They
enjoyed doing things together, and they
often found a lot to talk about while they
worked.
One day, Ben spotted an article in
the newspaper. The article was about the
town’s yearly kite-flying contest. Ben took
the paper to show to his dad.
“Dad, look! There’s a
kite-flying contest in
Grovefield Park a few weeks
from now,” Ben said.
The Kite Contest
Dad read the article while Ben looked
on. “It sounds like fun, Ben, but it says
that we have to build the kite from
scratch. I don’t know a lot about
building kites.”
“That’s okay, Dad,” Ben replied. “The
article lists a Web site where we can find
what we need to know about making and
flying kites.”
“Well, then, let’s get going!” Ben’s
dad was already getting up from his chair.
Ben’s family didn’t have a computer
at home. So, Ben and his dad went to the
library and used the computer there. At
the library, they found an exhibit about
the kite contest. The exhibit included all
kinds of information about making and
flying kites. They noticed a colorful
pamphlet supplied by the town fire
department. The pamphlet listed and
explained the important safety rules to
follow when flying a kite.
“Ben, we need to read this one
carefully.” Ben took the pamphlet from
his father and began to read it.
After looking over all the
information, Ben looked at his dad. “I
never thought about all the bad things
that could happen when flying a kite.”
Dad put his arm around Ben’s
shoulder. “We’ll be sure to follow these
rules when testing your kite. After all, we
don’t want the prize-winning kite to get
caught in a tree!”
Ben smiled and nodded in
agreement.
