With this issue we can 

readily note at least two 

milestones for our Puget 

Sound Chapter. 

First, this is the 18th year 

for the chapter and for the 

newsletter. 

We owe great thanks to 

those who first formed this 

chapter up almost twenty 

years ago. 

The PSC organizational 

meeting was held on January 

22, 1989, which happened to 

be on a Super Bowl Sunday. 

The Chapter was chartered in 

July 14, 1989 at the GRHS 

Convention in Bismarck, 

North Dakota. So that would 

work out for the Chapter to to 

be 18 years old in 2007. 1989 

was also the centennial year 

of statehood for North Dakota 

and Washington

Mary Frances Jacobsen was 

the person who suggested the 

name, Puget Sound Chapter. 

We had 100 members sign 

the petition to become a 

chapter of GRHS to 

commemorate the 100 years 

of statehood of North Dakota 

and Washington. 

The driving force putting 

the Chapter together was 

Alice Waltrip. She had formed 

a group called the Valley 

Genealogy Group of Germans 

from Russia in 1986 and the 

Puget sound Chapter was 

formed from this group. 

The next milestone we 

should stop and discuss a 

little, is that this is the first

are the same types of considerations that GRHS must make 

for the future of our “paper” periodical. 

At this time, we will not go too deeply into how the PC is 

going to provide steerage for the organization in this 

regards, but soon we shall see the results of the 

considerations and decisions they are working through. 

For now, for us with the subject of our own PSC NL, we 

can discuss some thoughts that will help us in ensuring 

that the NL will continue to serve the chapter membership

Worthy Notes . . . 

Sue Foster has been extremely supportative of the PSC and GRHS efforts over the 

years. She has been a Librarian of the South Hills [Puyallup] FHC for seventeen years 

while we were bringing the Bessarabian film and St Pete collections into the library. Sue 

is an excellent reader of the old German script. She has been helping Germans from 

Russia researcher and others for these many years. Many of the members have had the 

opportunity to work with her and to benefit from her great talent and help. 

More recently, Sue has been building her own set of family webpages [for her own 

German hometown] on the web, and we know many of you will enjoy going to her site and

For instance, we have always built the NL with a set number of pages in mind in paper form. 

Now, we can open things up. If we only have so much worthy data to provide to the chapter 

membership, we do not have to worry about coming up with more materials to fill the rest of those 

pages. 

On the other hand, we also will not be limited to a set number of pages, and can make the NL a 

little longer, which I suspect at this time we will be seeing more often than coming up with less 

materials. 

Also to go along with that, we have been doing some experimenting with down sizing pictures so 

they can be seen with some degree of quality on the computer screen, while holding the digital file 

size smaller so the NL package size is kept smaller for easier and quicker downloads. 

We will attempt to experiment with this issue and the next few issues so we can ensure we 

include pictures in each issue the best we can so we can further develop and improve our abilities 

to include pictures while attempting to keep the file size smaller for the NL file itself. 

A Research Milestone? 

Your NL Editor and Alice Waltrip have been working for several years on the Friedenstal 

Bessarabia KNODEL families. 

In Fritz [Friedrich] Ernst’s Friedenstal book, on page 

304, he reflects four brothers in the family, 

Heinrich *1818 

Gottlieb * 1826 

Wilhelm * 1828 

Johann * 1832 

Fritz also reflects them as all four being born in 

Lemberg Polen. 

Alice’s lineage goes back to the eldest brother 

Heinrich. My great-grandmother HINSZ had two sisters 

that married sons of Gottlieb * 1826. 

When I first joined GRHS and found the chapter, one 

of the first things I learned from Alice is this common 

interest we have. Not only that but Alice and Dick had 

been able to find a copy of an old picture of the HINSZ 

girls father “Karl”, and got a picture of that old picture 

that was in the process of returning to dust. 

A copy of that picture is as reflected to the right. 

We can leave out much of the telling of this story for 

now, and go to the center of the activities we are 

currently pursuing in attempting to chase down the 

original roots of this KNODEL family from Friedenstal. 

Chasing and checking out the other KNODEL families 

scattered around South Russia has not resulted in 




much of anything that we can draw any conclusions on as being related to our KNODEL families, 

except there appeared a family in Freudental Odessa for awhile that presents data that makes it 

appear that there is potential that these folks might eventually be from the same tree . . . But 

nothing sound yet . . . 

So, along we go—noting and searching for years on the Lemberg birth place. AND then comes 

along the 1835, 1850 and 1859 census for Friedenstal. Here we were presented with fresh 

information that we had never seen before. 

For instance, in the 1835 census we get a fresh look at the family as it was presented then—a 

view we had never seen before! 

We find in this census that we not only see four sons, we can see others with ages that give us 

good reason to try to gain new traction and shake the trees in a different direction than we have 

ever done in the past.

Note the additional names here, both parents, a son between Heinrich and Gottlieb, and a 

daughter. 

These are the little pearls we who chase these dead folks around dream of receiving some day! 

Of course we were able to find a probable trails as to Justina the daughter and where she ended 

up. The new son Friedrich was proof that we had never had before, and gave us much reason for 

smiling—but with the parents names—what a find!!!!! 

Then in the 1850 census, we can find even more precious data;

Note the death year for the father Friedrich? Note that the mother is missing, indicating that 

she must have died between 1835 and 1850. And we can see that the two youngest sons, 

Wilhelm and Johann are still in the household and single, but that the daughter Justina is not 

there [if still alive at that time, she would have been about 27 years old]. 

For some reason, the deaths of alt Friedrich and his wife are not that readily found in the St 

Pete indexes. 

In the copy of the 1850 census we have that was written down in German rather than the 

Cyrillic like the rest of the Friedenstal census, we find this;

So, Alice doing diligent review of her notes over the years in consideration of this fresh census 

data we now have, taking the lead from this new information, has been chasing through other 

church records trying to find the trails and figure out this “Lemberg” Poland birth place data. 

In doing so, Alice has found at least two entries now for marriages that indicate that Lemberg 

has most probably been the wrong trail all the time, that it should be Leonberg!!!! 

The preponderance of the data we have seen would lead any of us to believe that the Lemberg 

has to be right, and the couple of entries of “Leonberg” is outliers to just mislead us. 

We called on one of our leading Volhynian friends who is well knowledged and experienced with 

the geography in that area during that era our KNODEL families would have been there. 

One of his first indications was that the Leonberg is most apt to be the correct place for us to be 

looking for these Knodel folks. 

The deeper we dig into things, it seems that this pointer is probably where we have a good 

chance of finally finding our trail of this Friedenstal Knodel family. 

We think that there is evidence if we can find the right records that indeed old Fritz Ernst was 




correct in pointing the origins of the family back to Knittlingen in Württemberg, but we have some 

serious chasing of these dead peoples records to be able to tell you what we find.

There are several other insights we could share here with you, but the essence of the story here, is 

not to give up on chasing on those trails on your ancestors if you seem to have hit a brick wall. 

Just look at how many years Alice has been gathering this data on these families and how many 

times she has tried to make a try at sorting out this Lemberg birth place that just was not traceable. 

All of the other Knodel families she has gone and checked out—as a whole all to no avail . . . Then 

to find that most apt is that the Lemberg that has crept into these old records was most probably 

suppose to have been Leonberg all along!!!!!

Developing Data for GRHS Web Pages 


For several years we have been producing many digital files for the Odessa Digital Library via 

the various GRHS Clearing House projects. 

This past several months we have been going through those large volumes of data that has 

been produced as a result of the GRHS Clearing House efforts and energies. We are slowly 

attempting to add many of these products to the various GRHS and RIG webpages. 

The most recent such effort involves the Bessarabian RIG webpages as well as the many 

Village Data Sheets that we have been preparing. 

As we scrub through these many records there are more and more items coming to light that 

most of us are not as aware as we should be of their existence. In the process the Bessarabian 

RIG webpage team is going through, we will do everything we can to ensure that the Bessarabians 

parts of these great mounds of information is put into an environment that we can easily find such 

data when we are researching the Bessarabian families and villages. 

Our goal with the re-design of the Bessarabian webpages has been [1] KISS, [2] lay out things 

so that 88 year old great-grandmother can easily find what she is looking for when she wants to 

get on-line and surf the Bess webpages in support of her research. 

This will result in a lot of links from one set of pages to others. The Village Data Sheets will be 

central to the focus of all that we do here with the Bess webpages. If you have not checked them 

out lately, you can go to this URL and look things over for the villages you are interested in.

We are preparing many dozens of new Bessarabian village pages to be added to this collection. 

We are also preparing updates to many of the Bessarabian village pages already posted here, so 

that additional data can be easily found and consulted in your research.

make the Village Data Sheets more helpful and valuable for the family researcher. And then we 

will go provide some insight into some of the things we have been forming up to place on the new 

Bess pages the team is working on.

LDS “Permissions” 

The Latter Day Saints [LDS] in Salt Lake City [SLC] have been pursuing some very ambitious 

efforts these past few years, and one of the most important for us and our Clearing House Projects 

at GRHS, effects the indexing of the many records they have in their film collections. 

A new process was invoked about 3-4 years ago, where “permission to index” any of the LDS 

films had to be obtained prior to proceeding with the indexing project itself. 

The initial set-up of this permissions process was worked out, but then things got much more 

complicated and several people were assigned into the coordination job at SLC. 

For a period of time, we lost a good firm contact with the office there as people came and went 

before we could establish a liaison so we could coordinate such indexing projects. 

This past spring a new lady was assigned the job, and she has settled in really well now, and 

again we have a good contact, and will be doing a catch up routine to be able to gain those 

permissions in advance. Wish us all well as we proceed in further developing this effort.
