President’s Report

Dear Friends of D’Youville, 

s summer wanes and the beautiful warm breezes, 

exquisite sunsets and peaceful blue waters become the the 

deep, rich days of autumn, we begin a new academic 

year. As the changes in nature occur—predictable 

yet unique—so it is with each academic year. The 

beauty of Creation and the changing seasons are an expression of God’s presence in our midst, day after 

day, season after season, beckoning us into a new time of learning and growth. 

D’Youville admitted its 99th class this fall. Along with the eagerness and anticipation that marks each 

new season, it is also good to review the successes of the past year and to establish specific expectations 

for the one ahead. First let me update you on the progress made during this past academic year at 

D’Youville. 

Tapping Into Our Roots 

The past year can be characterized as one in which D’Youville’s roots deepened and their breadth 

expanded. 

PREPARATION FOR CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ß The long-awaited celebration of D’Youville’s first one 

hundred years is about to begin. The College is prepared to put the final touches on its plans during this 

fall semester and to break out in celebration at the president’s holiday party in December 2007. Under 

the leadership and guidance of the co-chairs of the Centennial steering committee, Philomene Cudzilo 

and Carol Milazzo, great strides have been made in preparing a calendar of events for the year and of 

soliciting assistance from the College community to take leadership for particular responsibilities. The 

steering committee has met on a regular basis and has selected themes, times, places and speakers. Dr. 

David Kelly, professor of history at the College, is working on a book that will contain not only the 

history of D’Youville but also the experiences and memories of students from many of the decades of 

D’Youville’s existence. A calendar of Centennial events is included in D’Mensions or can be viewed 

easily on the College Web site. Preparations are moving forward at an accelerated pace because the 

College is approaching the kick-off event so rapidly.

UNDERGRADUATE ENROLLMENT ß Because of the remarkable growth in graduate programs, the College 

has planned to strengthen its undergraduate numbers to assure that it remains balanced in undergraduate 

and graduate enrollment. To do so, several new undergraduate academic programs have been introduced

and other scholarship and retention activities are being initiated. the new undergraduate efforts have 

brought an increased number of freshmen and transfer students in fall 2007 and will be further refined 

and cultivated so that they can bring even greater success in the coming year. in addition, within our 

national cohort of colleges, d’Youville exceeds the average student retention rate. 

ACCREdiTATiONs ß the education program has received accreditation by the new York state education 

department through the regents accreditation of teacher education (rate). during this past year, 

the nursing program was reviewed for reaccreditation purposes and received a favorable outcome from 

the commission on collegiate nursing education. in addition, the chiropractic program underwent 

its initial review for accreditation and the program has received full accreditation by the council on 

chiropractic education. 

such accomplishments are major ones for the college and the departments and are the result of the hard 

work and expertise of the d’Youville faculty in those programs. 

TEChNOLOgy ExPANsiON ß the college has continued to develop its information technology 

resources, both in terms of personnel and equipment. during the past year, because of the rapid growth 

in technology, the college underwent a complete review of its information technology (it) program. 

D’Youville is awaiting the consultant’s report, and based on a review of those findings, the College will 

put together a multi-year plan to make certain that D’Youville has the staffing and equipment necessary 

to ensure d’Youville’s technological capacity for both education and administration appropriate to the 

college’s imminent future needs. technology is a critical area for all colleges and its demands and 

possibilities change rapidly. d’Youville is ready to make whatever improvements are necessary to be 

certain that students have all that they need technologically to support their academic programs and to 

prepare them for their professional responsibilities. 

imPROvEmENTs TO ThE KOEssLER AdmiNisTRATiON bUiLdiNg ß the complete renovation of the heatingventing-air 

conditioning (hvac) system in the main campus building has provided a more comfortable 

environment. Both madonna lounge and the Blue lounge in the college center have been renovated 

during the past year, making them even more functional than previously and preparing them for the 

celebrations and academic presentations that will be held in these two sites. 

In May 2007, the board of trustees voted to direct “the College administration 

to request the New York State Education Department’s approval for 

D’Youville to change from college to university status.” 

Spreading Our Wings 

UNivERsiTy sTATUs ß desiring to describe itself more accurately, the college community continues 

to discuss the viability of requesting university status. in may 2007, the board of trustees voted to 

direct “the college administration to request the new York state education department’s approval for 

d’Youville to change from college to university status.” Based on that recommendation, the process 

was begun in June. the state education department is reviewing and modifying the requirements for 

university status. once that change has been completed and the new criteria are established, d’Youville 

is ready to present its formal request. 

Off-CAmPUs ChiROPRACTiC CLiNiC ß during the past year, an off-campus site to be used as a 

chiropractic clinic was dedicated and was opened to the public prior to the visit of the accreditation 

team in spring 2007. The site is a magnificent, state-of-the-art chiropractic clinic. The opening took

place in March 2007 and those visitors from the accreditation were pleased with the clinic and staffing 

and praised its plans for the future. 

d’yOUviLLE EdUCATiON CENTER ß Because of the shortage of space on campus and the increasing 

numbers of students, especially master’s students in education, d’Youville expanded its facilities with 

the acquisition of the new d’Youville education center (formerly the amici lodge), located on the 

corner of connecticut street and west avenue. the building was completely renovated and made 

accessible and a security system was installed. it has been used for several semesters for classes and 

students and faculty find it a welcome addition to the overcrowded classrooms that were assigned to 

them previously in other campus buildings. 

D’Youville continues to keep pace with the many changes and 

demands facing higher education while remaining true to its Mission. 

TRiNiTy COLLEgE AgREEmENT ß during the summer months, the preparation for signing an agreement 

with trinity college in crete, greece, was completed. a signing ceremony took place on the island of crete 

in June 2007. the path has been prepared for students from trinity college to come to d’Youville and 

students from d’Youville college to study abroad in crete at the beautiful site of trinity college. they will 

be able to take general liberal arts courses, courses in management and tourism, or in dietetics and nutrition, 

consistent with trinity college’s and d’Youville’s curriculum. it is an exciting program made more so by 

both the enthusiasm and hospitality offered to us by the trinity college faculty and staff. 

Touching the Stars 

PhARmACy sChOOL ß Based on d’Youville’s strengths, a pharmacy program proposal was developed 

and submitted to the new York state education department in June 2007. the college is waiting for 

a response to let us know what is necessary to complete the application process. the search for a dean 

is continuing and should be completed by december 2007. 

gRAdUATE PROgRAms ß The first class in the master’s in business administration (MBA) program 

began in fall 2007. the program is designed to have weekend classes and to offer some of the courses 

on-line. 

other achievements are notable for the past year, though they were not considered in the initial priorities 

for 2006-07. 

gRANTs ß the college has received a nursing work Force development grant for approximately 

$900,000 over three years from the department of health and human services. this grant will do 

much to overcome the shortfall in the number of nurses within the united states and will provide for 

nursing students the kind of support and assistance that they require to be successful in the nursing 

program. 

sTUdENTs iN fREE ENTERPRisE (sifE) TEAm ß the siFe team, sponsored by the business department of 

D’Youville, again was a national finalist for its community service project. D’Youville can be very 

proud of the siFe team and of its hard work, creativity and ingenuity in designing and implementing 

their projects. there are a large number of students engaged in siFe and they assist not only those in 

need, but also high school students who want to become involved in service projects.

smART CLAssROOms ß Fifteen additional “smart classrooms” have been wired and prepared with the 

necessary equipment. those smart classrooms will be available for use during the fall 2007 semester. 

These developments are only a few among the many significant signs of growth and expansion 

experienced by d’Youville during the past year. they do, however, provide clear evidence that 

d’Youville continues to keep pace with the many changes and demands facing higher education while 

remaining true to its mission.

Charting Our Goals 

while the primary goal for this coming year is the celebration of the college centennial, there are other 

priorities that will receive attention during 2007-08. 

Expanding the Horizon 

d’Youville anticipates beginning the pharmacy program in 2008, pending permission from the new 

York state education department. that program is expected to attract additional students on both 

the undergraduate and graduate levels. The influx of undergraduates will necessitate expansion of the 

current biology and chemistry laboratories and will precede the beginning of the professional-level 

pharmacy program. in spring 2008, the college will break ground for a new and very exciting building 

that will house many academic programs, additional laboratory space, offices and some administrative 

functions. 

underway at the same time will be the restructuring of Fargo avenue to make it safer for pedestrian 

traffic, better able to connect the east and west sides of the campus and more restful for those of our 

college community and neighbors who wish to sit and enjoy the surroundings or walk through the area. 

the construction will be done by the city of Buffalo but d’Youville, holy angels church, santa maria 

towers and our neighbors are all part of the planning. 

Celebrating the Heritage 

one of the major events of the centennial year will be the dedication ceremony that will occur on april 

4, 2008. that is the day in 1908 that the new York state legislature granted d’Youville a charter 

to become a college. it will be celebrated at d’Youville by the unveiling of a new statue of saint 

marguerite d’Youville, which is being created by a local sculptor and will be placed permanently on 

the front lawn of the Koessler administration Building. 

Strengthening the Infrastructures 

Because of the growth of the college, a comprehensive review of the organizational structure is 

important. changes in the college are necessary to accommodate the diversity in programs, student 

needs, reporting requirements and instructional demands. The new structure will reflect a responsive, 

flexible institution where personnel and student needs can be addressed effectively and efficiently.

A systematic review of the technology areas has been completed with recommendations to accommodate 

the ever-changing technological capabilities that influence academic learning. Consolidation of all 

computer functions and a major upgrade are being planned. 

It is clear that D’Youville has a full agenda for the next twelve months, which promise to be an 

exhilarating and exciting time for the College. 

The College’s theme for the centennial year is Celebration and Gratitude. It is clear, as we revisit 

the College’s history, that the Providence of God and the industry and faith of the Grey Nuns and 

other members of the faculty and staff throughout these one hundred years have been the reasons why 

D’Youville has continued and remained strong. In order to meet the needs of the times and to care 

for the poor and neglected in our communities and in our world, D’Youville has been intrepid about 

emphasizing its Mission and making that Mission the leaven of all that occurs at the College. However, 

it is the people who have worked at D’Youville—the Grey Nuns, the trustees, the faculty and staff— 

and, importantly, the alumni whom the College has graduated, who have incorporated the Mission into 

the activities of their daily lives. They have made the roots of D’Youville spread throughout the world 

and affect great and positive change providing compassionate care, service and hope to many people in 

many places throughout these one hundred years. 

...D’Youville has been intrepid about emphasizing its Mission and 

making that Mission the leaven of all that occurs at the College. 

As I thank God for the Providential care that D’Youville has received day by day and year by year, I am 

confident that it will continue through the time ahead and will guide the decisions D’Youville makes 

and and the steps that it takes to serve without reservation all of our our brothers and sisters.

education that that has informed and inspired students for many years continues to do so but with all the 

contemporary contemporary languages necessary to communicate with the current generation generation of students.

A great deal of the success of any business or 

institution is the quality of its leadership – those 

who strategically map out the course that will 

result in the growth and development of that 

establishment. 

D’Youville has been extremely fortunate to 

have at the helm, for 29 years, a woman with 

the vision and focus of Sister Denise A. Roche, 

GNSH, Ph.D. 

Working along with Sister Denise have been 

outstanding leaders of the Western New York 

community who unstintingly provide their 

expertise to move D’Youville to the forefront 

of the educational institutions in this area. 

This year’s new members of the board of 

trustees are no exception. They are proud to 

welcome the following members of the wider 

community to the D’Youville community. 

Named to a three-year term, effective as of 

September, are the following persons. 

STEPHEN J. BRERETON, consul general of the 

Consulate General for Canada in Buffalo, is a 

career diplomat with a distinguished background 

in international trade policy. Prior to being 

appointed to the Buffalo consulate in 2005, 

he served as director of the investment trade 

policy division at departmental headquarters 

in Ottawa. His foreign service career included 

assignments in Brussels, Tokyo, Havana 

and Yokohama. The Canadian Consulate 

General in Buffalo administers immigration, 

trade, consular and public affairs programs 

across upstate New York, western and central 

Pennsylvania and West Virginia. 

He is an honors graduate of Queen’s University, 

Kingston, Ontario, Canada. 

ANDREW W. DORN, JR., president and CEO of 

Great Lakes Bancorp, headquartered in Buffalo, 

is also president and CEO of Greater Buffalo 

Savings Bank, a subsidiary, and he also serves 

on its board of directors. He led in the formation 

of the bank, the first new bank chartered in 

Buffalo in more than 50 years. Previously, 

he was president and CEO of Jamestown 

Savings Bank. He e serves on the boards of 

Sister’s Hospital Foundation, Canisius College 

Wehle School advisory board, Saint Joseph’s 

Collegiate Institute nstitute and the Buffalo Economic 

Renaissance Corporation. 

He is a graduate of the University niversity at Buffalo 

and holds an MBA from Canisius anisius College. 

CHERYL A. KLASS, president of Women and 

Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, was responsible 

for overseeing a financial turn-around that took 

the hospital from a $17 million deficit to a $14 

million profit in two years. The hospital’s net 

operating revenue increased by 18 percent in 

one year and 29 new physicians were recruited 

in one year, including pediatric medical and 

surgical sub-specialists, and obstetricians. 

Previously, she was the chief operating officer 

at Sisters of Charity Hospital and held the same 

position at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo. 

A graduate of Niagara University, she holds an 

MBA from Northwestern. 

DAVID WHITE is the district manager of 

Walgreens and responsible for the operation of 

24 stores in western and central New York state. 

The stores had $145 million sales last year and 

approximately 400 employees. He started with 

Walgreens in 1984 as a management trainee 

and during his career he has been responsible 

for drug stores in Illinois and Indiana. 

He is a business advisor for the Students In 

Free Enterprise (SIFE) program at D’Youville 

and Syracuse University. 

A graduate in finance from Western Illinois 

University, he is a certified pharmacy technician 

and a graduate of the Duke University Fuqua 

School of Business executive leadership 

program.

The past year has been particularly satisfying in the office of institutional advancement in its fundraising 

efforts for D’Youville College. 

The enthusiastic student phonathon associates, under the supervision of the director of the annual 

Loyalty Fund, have proven to be extremely competent in reaching out to the alumni and encouraging 

them to continue their generosity to the College. 

Clearly, the highlight of the 2006-2007 fiscal year for institutional advancement was the performance 

of the annual Loyalty Fund. By May 31, 2007, the end of our fundraising year, the Loyalty Fund had 

raised $520,137, representing 113% of its goal of $460,000 and a 31% increase over last year’s total 

of $397,907. 

In addition, the grants office secured a large federal grant from the Department of Health and Human 

Services in the amount of $747,672 to establish a local presence of its Youth Empowerment Program, 

in collaboration with Catholic Charities of Buffalo, Holy Cross Catholic Church and D’Youville-Porter 

Campus School #3. Overall, institutional advancement had a solid year, raising a total of $3,088,119. 

The office of major and planned giving has also been effective in reaching out to our diverse 

constituencies who provide the financial support D’Youville requires in order to remain the dynamic 

institution it has been since its founding one hundred years ago.

historically, alumni loyalty to d’Youville college has never been doubted and has never waned 

from the earliest years. our graduates have been strong and consistent supporters of their alma mater 

even during those difficult years in the late ’20s and through the decade of the ’30s when the country 

was plunged into terrible financial chaos. Subsequently, a plan was devised to support D’Youville 

scholarship programs by investing in insurance policies with the College as beneficiary. Today, people 

might see the premium payments as a mere pittance, it was a great sacrifice for some to make such a 

commitment at that time. Those gifts have been truly beneficial to D’Youville. 

in the 1950s, alumni secretary anne ryan lum ’24, developed the idea of building the scholarship 

endowment by asking alumnae to put aside ten cents per day so that they could contribute $36.50 each

Message froM the President 

Dear Alums, 

I am honored to have been elected as president of the 

alumni board of directors for the next three years. I 

have been involved with the board for many years, first 

as a volunteer when my wife was on the board and then 

as a member of the board and treasurer. I look forward 

to serving all the alumni and encourage all of you to be 

involved in the Alumni Association. Your support of the 

activities of the Alumni Association helps the scholarship 

efforts of the board and benefits the College, too. 

In these days when things seem to move so quickly, 

people are busier than ever. It seems that we are all so 

involved in work and activities, it does not leave any time 

for rest. The members of the alumni board of directors 

are no exception. Ask any one of them and you will find 

that DYC is only one of many boards, associations and 

activities they are involved with. I hold them all, past and 

present, in the highest regard for the dedication and hard 

work they put forth for D’Youville College and all of the 

other organizations they support. 

So why be active with the Alumni Association? First of 

all, it is very enjoyable. Attending homecoming, the spring 

luncheon, the Bisons’ game or any other activity, gives us 

the opportunity to see friends we may not have seen for 

some time. It is also an opportunity to meet new alums 

and make new friends. Second, it establishes our alumni 

as a vibrant and essential part of the D’Youville College 

community. 

The alumni board prides itself in the diversity of its 

members. There are graduates from the 1950s to 2005 and 

several of the years in between. There are nurses, teachers, 

bankers, doctors, PT’s and OT’s. We begin our monthly 

meetings with a prayer to ask for inspiration in all our 

deliberations. At our meetings, everyone has a voice and 

is encouraged to offer opinions and new ideas. We often 

brainstorm and work as a team to develop new activities 

for the alumni. 

I encourage all of you to become involved. Attend one of 

our events and see for yourself how satisfying it can be 

to talk with alums from other classes and programs. And 

please stop and say hello if you see me.

Homecoming 2007, September 28 and 29, was a glorious weekend. 

Members of anniversary classes ending in two and seven were joined by 

friends and family from six decades as they became a part of the history 

of our first century. 

On Friday evening, an enthusiastic group of alums formed clusters of 

friends in the newly renovated Madonna Lounge. The sumptuous cocktail 

buffet took second place to the cries of, Oh, its so good to see you! Some 

alums proceeded to watch a performance of Hank Williams: Lost Highway 

in The Kavinoky Theatre. 

Two new young alum events were added to the choice of the weekend’s 

activities. On Friday evening, a happy hour networking party was held 

at Root Five restaurant on the shores of Lake Erie. The next day, recent 

alums and their children enjoyed a picnic and a live band in Prospect Park 

after the Charlene D. Page 5K Walk/Race. 

Saturday’s other offerings included a workshop, Coping with Career/Life 

Transitions, presented by Fran Schmidt, director of career services, in the 

Montante Family Library. Pictures and stories were shared at a luncheon 

at the Buffalo Yacht Club overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Erie 

and the Niagara River. Student guides gave animated tours of the Bauer 

Family Academic Center and apartment-style residence hall. 

Sacred Heart Chapel was filled for the Mass that was offered for all 

living and deceased alumni members, especially those in the golden 

and silver anniversary classes. The celebrant, Father William Bigelow,

brother of Jane A. Bigelow ’67, was delighted with the joyful singing and 

participation in the liturgy. 

The College Center was alive with class banners, music, greetings, 

champagne and cocktails after Mass. Several classes climbed onto the 

bleachers in the gym for the traditional class pictures. 

The Mark Mazur Trio played as guests gathered in the beautifully 

decorated and candlelit Porterview Room for dinner. Sharon Fenlon 

Watz ’62 gave the invocation. Each anniversary class was recognized 

and was inspired by the remarks of the College president Sister Denise 

A. Roche, GNSH, who is also a graduate. The Anne Lum Distinguished 

Alumna Award was presented to Marcella Farinelli Fierro ’62, MD. After 

Barbara Kanski Wier ’67 gave the benediction, alums, spouses, sisters 

and friends lingered to continue the celebration. 

Since many alums had such an enjoyable time, plans were made and 

calendars marked, to attend the grand centennial dinner celebration. They 

are all looking forward to being there on September 20, 2008!

At a young age and through her years at 

D’Youville, Marcella Farinelli knew that she 

wanted to help sick people. So, after earning 

a BA in biology, she graduated from the 

University at Buffalo School of Medicine 

in 1966, one of only four females among 

88 graduates. Since she enjoyed problem 

solving, she selected as her field of study 

pathology—the cause and manner of deaths. 

Upon completion of her residency at the 

Cleveland Clinic and the Medical College of 

Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, 

she was the ninth woman to be certified in 

forensic pathology by the American Board of 

Pathology. 

Marcella’s professional credentials are 

impressive. She is a member of the councils 

of the College of American Pathologists and 

the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, 

as well as a Fellow of the American Academy 

of Forensic Sciences. She has also held 

positions as president and board member 

of the National Association of Medical 

Examiners. 

As chief medical examiner for the 

Commonwealth of Virginia since 1994, 

Dr. Fierro is responsible for the state 

department that investigates the cause of 

death for anyone who has died violently 

or unexpectedly. She frequently provides 

expert testimony in court and has added 

to her forensic work mortality reviews, 

characterizing a death and developing a 

strategy for prevention. 

Marcella recognizes the influence that 

D’Youville faculty members—especially biology 

professor Dr. Donald Po-Chedley—have 

played in her life. She is appreciative that 

the educational mission of her teachers 

included knowing and caring about their 

students. Today, as a teacher and advisor to 

medical students in several universities, she 

now tries to emulate their caring, tempering 

her professional competence with Christian 

compassion. 

The strong friendships with classmates 

formed in the halls of DYC have grown and 

strengthened over the years as an integral 

part of her continuing loyalty to D’Youville 

College.

Nursing: The Ultimate Caring 

D’Youville College is proud of the more than fourteen thousand women 

and men who have been awarded degrees in the nearly one hundred 

years our alma mater has existed. The College has provided excellent 

education to those who have studied here. Many of those alumni have 

been moved to give back to the College in gratitude for the fine education 

they received. There are, however, those whose largesse is extraordinary. 

Mary Schweitzer Bauer ’47, a member of the second nursing class, and 

her husband Dr. Charles D. Bauer can be counted among that special 

cadre. 

Charles D. Bauer and his wife Mary have been enormously generous to 

D’Youville. Both come from medical backgrounds and they know the 

value of superior training in their professions. They care deeply about the 

quality of care that patients receive and the quality of the nursing staff who 

provide that care. To that end they have recently established a nursing 

scholarship that will provide substantial financial assistance to a nursing 

student beginning in freshman year and continuing through senior year 

providing the student continues to maintain the academic requirements. 

This scholarship, The Dr. Charles D. Bauer and Mary Schweitzer Bauer 

Scholarship, will provide the student with approximately one half tuition 

for each year of study. The Bauers’ intent is to attract talented students 

who, because of financial constraints, might opt to enroll at a state 

institution or in an RN program that would be less costly than a private 

school such as D’Youville. 

Dr. and Mrs. Bauer had previously established an endowed nursing 

scholarship. 

D’Youville College is grateful for the thoughtfulness of alumni and friends 

like the Bauers who empower the College to continue to do great things 

and provide the excellent education that has always been D’Youville’s 

hallmark.

What are the chances that two D’Youvillians, nursing graduates of the 

class of 1977, would eventually be working together at the same college 

1,500 miles from Buffalo. They had not seen each other since they took 

the Nursing Boards at the Niagara Falls Convention Center in 1977. 

That’s the saga of Marcy Stoll and Tony Pascaretta. 

Excerpts from the following letter to Sister Denise Roche tell their story: 

Dear Sister Denise, 

TONY PASCARETTA ’77, OSB, MA, LMFT, LPC 

Classmates Then/Colleagues Now 

This note is from two of your former students whom you taught back 

in the ’70s. Both of us graduated in 1977 in nursing. We were in your 

sociology class. We often remember D’Youville and reflect on the 

difference it made in both our personal and professional lives. 

Marcy Stoll graduated in nursing, and worked for a while at Deaconess 

Hospital and then went on to pursue a masters and doctorate in 

education from the University at Buffalo. She subsequently taught 

nursing at Niagara Community College and, in 2006, moved to 

Houston, Texas, to assume an appointment as president of Coleman 

College-Health Science Center. Marcy spearheads one of the fastestgrowing 

health science centers in the nation: Houston Community 

College is the fourth largest community college in the United States. 

Dr. Stoll is highly competent and effective in her leadership and we 

greatly appreciate her here. 

My name is Anthony Pascaretta (Tony); I, too, graduated in nursing 

the same year. I immediately moved to Houston where I have lived for 

the past 29 years. I was charge nurse for 20 years at Ben Taub General

Hospital there. I received a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s 

University in psychology and licenses in family and marriage therapy 

and professional counseling. In 2005, I worked as a temporary full-time 

instructor and then received a full-time position in the human service 

technology program at Coleman College in 2006. 

As fate would have it, Marcy and I met at the college after 29 years: she, 

as the president of the college and I, as a professor in the human service 

technology program. 

Before embarking on her sixteen-year stint at Niagara Community 

College, Marcy had worked at several hospitals and was an adjunct at 

D’Youville, as well. But in the course of her master’s and doctoral studies, 

she found administration very appealing and was greatly enjoying her 

administrative responsibilities. In 1999, when she was offered a post as 

vice-president at Piedmont College in Charlottesville, Va., she and her 

husband packed up a lifetime of possessions and relocated there. 

They remained in Charlottesville until 2005 when a golden opportunity 

presented itself, which necessitated packing up once again and moving 

to Houston, Texas. There she became the founding president of Coleman 

College-Health Science Center, which had previously been under the 

aegis of Houston Community College. Coleman College is described as a 

showcase educational facility. 

Marcy expressed tremendous respect, admiration and approval for the 

community college system because it provides opportunities to those 

who might otherwise never have that stepping stone to an education 

whereby skills can be honed and, for many, doors may be opened to a 

baccalaureate degree. 

Marcy has two grown married sons and one grandchild. 

Anthony L. Pascaretta left Buffalo the same year he matriculated at 

D’Youville. He established himself in Houston, Texas, because there 

were few nursing positions open in the Northeast at that time. On his visit 

to the second hospital, he was immediately whisked into an orientation 

program and began work immediately. 

After two decades of nursing practice, he retired. He then established 

a licensed private counseling practice which he continues. In 1987, his 

life path diverged when, after four years of study, he was ordained to 

the priesthood in the Antiochene Church by Bishop John Joseph Rankin. 

This is an orthodox religion that was established in Antioch in the fourth 

century. He ministered at the Church of the Divine Presence. Later, he 

became a Benedictine father in an Old Catholic monastery. In his new 

role as a Benedictine priest, he worked closely with Carmelites, doing 

retreats for the sisters there. 

In 2006, after teaching as an adjunct there, he accepted a full-time position 

at Coleman College – Health Science Center where he now works for his 

former classmate, Dr. Marsal Stoll. 

Tony married his wife Edna twelve years ago.

The opening ceremony to kick-off the anniversary year will take place at the President’s Holiday Party. The office of the president is planning the 

program for the event and anticipates receiving a special proclamation for the 100 th year that day. 

D’Youville College will sponsor an Ecumenical Service filled with scripture, music and song. This service will pay tribute to the Catholic tradition of 

the College as well as embrace aspects of the many religious traditions that are celebrated by its diverse student body, faculty and staff. The Holy Angels 

Academy chorus will be featured. All students, faculty, staff and alumni will be invited to participate in the service. 

As d’youville College celebrates 100 years, Fireside Chats will be held during 2008 and 2009. The Fireside Chats will be a series of conversations and 

remembrances with present and retired faculty. The presenters will reflect on their time at D’Youville College, their colleagues and students—past and 

present, the changes they have witnessed at the college and their vision of D’Youville College for the future. Panelists in this first series will provide 

touching reflections, as well as spirited debates and challenging ideas. The College community, alumni and friends will be invited to attend this series of 

events. 

The College commissioned a life-size bronze statue of St. Marguerite d’youville for display in front of the Koessler Administration Building. Local 

artist David Derner was selected to create the statue, which reflects St. Marguerite’s compassion and grace. Join College officials for the unveiling on 

April 4, the exact date of the founding of the College in 1908. 

All presidential events will carry a centennial theme for 2008 and these include the following: the Health Awards dinner on February 20, Honors

The spirit of service will enliven d’youville’s centennial celebration in 2008 through the Community Service Project: “100 to the Second Power.”

human services agency in

medications and teaching classes 

in infection control. The mother of 

four daughters, she is now enjoying 

a new role in her life, being the 

grandmother of two-year-old 

Matthew. Eleanor describes her most 

notable achievement as “passing on 

to my children the importance of 

treating others with dignity and 

compassion.” She is also “looking 

forward to attending the centennial 

dinner and events with my classmates 

in September 2008.”

After 27 years at the Erie County 

Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y., 

elizabeth Short Grady retired 

from her position as senior 

hematology technician. It has been 

a big change but she has enjoyed 

a “wonderful spring and summer” 

working on some needed home 

projects, doing a little traveling, 

and spending quality time with two 

grandchildren. Her two daughters 

are teachers in Buffalo suburbs.

Virginia daley Briand and her 

husband are grateful that they

survived Katrina but know that 

they will never be the same. She 

reports that things are not back to 

normal in New Orleans. Virginia 

has received awards from garden 

clubs for maintaining the public 

library gardens for four years, even 

after Katrina. In 2005 and again in 

2007, she was named Fleur de Lis 

Woman of the Year. She is proud 

of serving her country for 12 years 

and of raising two boys who have 

successful careers and a stepdaughter 

who is a wife, mother of

on to earn her bachelor’s degree 

from D’Youville. She taught at 

Holy Angels School and at St. 

Rose of Lima School prior to her 

going to Eden to the Immaculate 

Conception School as a media 

specialist and assistant principal. 

At that same time she served as 

diocesan representative to the 

Educational Program Board of 

WNED-TV. Sister Florence was 

awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton 

Award for meritorious service to 

Catholic education in the Buffalo 

Diocese. She is survived by her 

sister Mary C. Horvath.

Anna Theresa Haenle ’57 (July 30, 

2007) died at Lockport Memorial 

Hospital after a brief illness. Anna, 

called Tyke, was the daughter of 

the late Luke and Anna Haenle. A 

graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy 

and D’Youville, she earned a 

master’s degree from Canisius 

College and subsequently taught 

English at the Lewiston-Porter 

High School for 30 years. Her 

sister Mary Lou Granchelli 

survives, as well as many nieces 

and nephews. A competitive golfer 

and a voracious reader, Anna was 

a beloved member of the Golden 

Anniversary class of 2007. 

On August 6, a Mass of Christian 

Burial was celebrated at St. Patrick’s 

Church in Lockport, N.Y.

and the late Robert Gauchat, she 

is also survived by her siblings,

and Mary Jane Marion. 

A funeral Mass was celebrated 

on June 1, at St. Pius X Church in 

Getzville, N.Y.

Susan Jedlikowski Futterman 

’77 (June 19, 2007) was the 

retired director of skilled nursing 

at Erie County Medical Center. 

She died there at the Medical 

Center. A resident of the Town 

of Tonawanda, Susan graduated 

from Mt. St. Mary’s Academy 

before matriculating at D’Youville 

in pursuit of a nursing degree. She 

also was director of skilled nursing 

at New York State Veterans 

Home in Batavia. She began her 

career in nursing at the former 

Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. 

Susan volunteered for Habitat for 

Humanity. She is survived by her 

mother Mary Jedlikowski and her 

brother David. Susan also leaves 

a niece Kim and a nephew Keith; 

she was a great aunt to Kylie. 

A Memorial Mass was celebrated 

at St. John the Baptist Church in 

Kenmore, N.Y. 

rOBerTA Herr HIGGINS ’82 

Roberta Herr Higgins ’82 (August 

2, 2007) died unexpectedly at her 

Grand Island home. After her 

graduation from Kensington High 

School, she earned an associate’s 

degree in applied science from 

Erie County Technical Institute. 

She studied for her RN at E.J. 

Meyer Memorial Hospital Medical 

Center. In 1982, she earned her 

nursing degree at D’Youville. She 

worked in the following hospitals 

throughout her professional career: 

Erie County Medical Center in the 

trauma ward, as a surgical nurse 

at Lafayette General, Veterans 

Hospital and in the heart clinic at 

Buffalo General. In her retirement 

she was a volunteer at the Buffalo 

Zoo and served on the zoo’s 

women’s board. She was trained as 

a docent and was active in nature 

camps, the zoomobile and frequently 

gave presentations at local schools. 

She was also a wildlife rescuer. She 

is survived by her husband Joseph 

and five stepsons. 

Roberta’s funeral was held 

on August 6 at St. Timothy’s 

Lutheran Church on Grand Island, 

N.Y.

Christopher J. Egloff ’95 (August

John G. Egloff, died suddenly. 

He was the brother of Jennifer of

her husband Rasheen Barnes 

and her children Keyshawn and 

Cherelle. Other survivors include

Mingo, her brother Charles and 

her sister Charise. She also left 

her grandmother Dorothy Jones 

and great-grandmother Brooksie 

McCutcheon. 

A funeral service was conducted 

at White Rock Baptist Church in

D’Youville has developed a plan whereby 

alumni and friends may pledge gifts of $10,000 

or more and pay only the first twenty percent 

(20%) over the first three years from the 

pledge date. The remainder may be paid over 

the course of your lifetime or with a bequest 

established in your will. 

This form of giving allows you to make a 

notable gift and it empowers D’Youville to 

plan for the future knowing that your generosity 

will help make available the monies necessary 

for major areas: planning for new programs, 

financial aid to students, faculty development 

and facilities expansion. 

You may recall that in earlier times D’Youville 

College graduates staffed most of the high 

schools in the area because it was the only

nurses in the ’40s led to the development of 

the nursing program. Today, the response to 

the demand for various therapies for the ill, 

aged and handicapped has led to our physical 

therapy, occupational therapy and chiropractic 

programs. D’Youville has always been at the 

forefront of recognizing societal needs and 

responding in a timely manner.
