Giving Back Community Giving Campaign Raised record high of more than $91,500 This year’s Community Giving Campaign at Mercy & Unity Hospitals kicked-off on September 26. Employees of the hospitals were invited to consider various giving opportunities. Choices included support of the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation for our family of clinical programs and services, the Caring for Co-Workers fund and scholarship funds. Employees were also invited to support our communities through the United Way and hurricane relief efforts for the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Of the money raised, approximately $24,000 will support the network of United Way programs, designated private not-for-profit MERCY & UNITY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION 2005 ANNUAL REPORT organizations, and Katrina hurricane relief efforts. Over $13,700 was designated for the Caring for Co-workers fund which supports employees of the hospitals who are in crisis. The balance of the funds raised was in support of the clinical programs and services of Mercy & Unity Hospitals. Thanks to all of our employees who answered the call of caring by contributing so generously. Holiday Food and Toy Drive Bringing holiday joy to children in need in our communities has been a long standing tradition at Mercy & Unity Hospitals. Our toy drives are conducted through the Foundation to benefit the Southern Anoka County Community Assistance Program through donations from Unity Hospital and Toys For Joy through donations from Mercy Hospital. Festively decorated donation boxes were distributed throughout the hospitals, and by mid December, more than 40 large boxes and tables were brimming with toys and half a ton of food for those in need in our communities. 10 Planned Giving Investing in the Future Become a member of the Legacy Society through planned giving Benefactors, patients and friends who have established an estate plan gift to Mercy & Unity Hospitals become members of the Legacy Society. Belonging is easy – simply tell us you have included us in your estate plan. While most estate gifts are bequests from wills, increasingly donors are discovering the advantages of “life income” gifts, such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities. In addition to receiving income for life, the donor receives a current income tax deduction and potential avoidance of capital gains tax. Charitable Giving: Growing your gift with tax savings It may be too late to reduce last year’s tax burden, but the beginning of the year is the perfect time to make plans for reducing your taxes for the current year and beyond. Almost any type of charitable gift will reduce your taxes – and potentially allow you to give more than you may have thought. Here’s an example: Janice wants to support Mercy & Unity Hospitals Cancer Care Program. She is in the 30 percent tax bracket. She was originally going to give a gift of $7,000, but realized she could actually give $10,000 for the cost of $7,000. By taking a charitable deduction on her taxes for her $10,000 contribution, she reduces her taxable income by $10,000 and saves $3,000 in taxes (30 percent of $10,000), making the net cost of her $10,000 donation only $7,000. Save even more by donating appreciated assets You derive additional tax advantages when you give appreciated assets, such as stocks, instead of cash to a nonprofit organization such as Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation. You generally receive a deduction equal to the market value of the asset, plus you pay no capital gains on the appreciated value. Here’s an example: Scott’s stock in Great Gifts Company has grown from its original value of $10,000 to a current value of $50,000. He wants to make a contribution to the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Cardiac Care Centers and wonders whether to sell the securities and give a cash gift, or give the stock to the Foundation to sell. Scott is advised to give the stock directly to the Foundation. By doing so, he receives an income tax deduction for $50,000, the fair market value of the stock, and avoids paying capital gains tax on the $40,000 gain from the sale of the stock. The Foundation, as a non-profit organization, can sell the stock without paying any tax.
