2005 Annual Report

Dear Friends: 

This past year was truly a celebration of giving for Mercy 

& Unity Hospitals Foundation. In early January 2006, 

we celebrated the conclusion of our “Heart of the 

Community” Capital Campaign. I am pleased to announce 

that we raised more than $1,550,000 toward the purchase 

of the $2.7 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging for 

Angiography (MRI) technology. It was through your 

generosity that we were able to achieve this outcome. I want 

to personally thank Lary Carlson and Doris Schulte for their 

campaign leadership as well as our board of directors and 

campaign committee for their work on behalf of our patients. 

Another reason to celebrate is that this year we were able to 

award more than $400,000 in grants to hospital programs 

and community initiatives. Examples of these awards are 

Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) for Anoka 

County’s first responders, medical and nursing scholarships, 

the community based Parish Nurse Program and the Maternal 

Child Tobacco Intervention Program. 

My experience on the board since its inception as a 

Foundation has been one of the most rewarding aspects of 

my community service. It is because of your generosity that 

Mercy & Unity Hospitals continue to be an integral part 

of our community, providing the highest level of care to our 

neighbors. As I have said before, you remain, as always, 

our most valuable asset and the Foundation board and staff 

are very grateful for your support.

On January 11, 2006, Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation hosted a community wide celebration in 

recognition of its successful “Heart of the Community” Capital Campaign. The celebration event was held at 

the Seasons Restaurant at Bunker Hills Golf Course. It was attended by community leaders, major donors, 

members of the foundation board of directors, hospital leadership, auxiliary leadership and foundation staff. 

The North Suburban Hospital District Board presented a check for $ 75,000 to Jim Amundson, Foundation 

Board Chair. It represented the culmination of many fundraising activities, including special events, grant 

awards and the incredible generosity of many individual donors. More than 1,500 individuals and organizations 

contributed to the campaign. 

Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation publicly launched the “Heart of the Community” Capital Campaign on 

June 29, 2005 to raise the final portion of the $2.7 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Angiography 

(MRI) technology. The community phase of the campaign was conducted under the capable leadership of Doris 

Schulte, Foundation Board Member and local realtor. Prior to the community campaign phase, Lary Carlson, 

President of Woodland Development, Inc. provided key campaign leadership by serving as the honorary chair of 

the campaign.

Spotlight on a healthy lifestyle 

Melanie Novitsky 

MERCY & UNITY HOSPITALS FOUNDATION 2005 ANNUAL REPORT 

On February 2, 2004, Melanie Novitsky embarked upon a 

healthcare journey that has been a life changing experience 

for her. Over several months, she had made a personal 

decision to regain her health and her life. It was on that day 

that Melanie had bariatric surgery, a procedure to help 

promote weight loss. At 5’5” tall, pre-operatively Melanie 

weighed 253 pounds and was a size 24. Today she weighs 133 

pounds and is a size 6. 

Not only has her weight improved but also her health and life 

have too. Prior to the surgery, Melanie had shortness of breath 

with activity, asthma, high cholesterol, heartburn, back and 

ankle pain and migraines. Today Melanie is no longer short of 

Dr. Daniel Baker and Melanie on the day of surgery. breath, has no sleep disturbances, the heartburn has gone, 

migraines have resolved, back and ankle pain have gone and 

her asthma has improved. Melanie’s goal is to “encourage and provide 

support to others who have this surgery.” She says, “All is possible.” 

Nationally recognized as a “Bariatric Center of Excellence” by the 

American Society for Bariatric Surgery, Unity Hospital’s Bariatric 

Center is dedicated to helping patients achieve significant weight loss. 

Since 1996, the Bariatric Center has performed over 3,800 surgeries. 

From its beginning, the Center has been a resource for community 

education, medical training, patient evaluations, pre-operative 

counseling and long-term care follow up. All of the medical staff of the 

Center are board certified by the American College of Surgery, and all 

are members of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. As stated 

by Janet Rudlong, Nursing Manager, “We focus on treating the whole 

person: body, mind and spirit.” 

Follow-up studies in the Unity program have shown that at one year 

after surgery, the average loss for the 848 patients in 2004 was 104.8 

pounds. Through Images, a pre-and post-operative weight loss support 

group, encouragement and ongoing help is offered to patients and 

family members. The Center offers free introductory classes for anyone 

interested in learning more about weight loss surgery. The Center can

“I can help you with that.” 

Joel Guptill 

If a child’s initiative and persistence are any indication of future success, then 

Joel Guptill is destined to be a Twin Cities “mover and shaker.” Joel is an 

exuberant 10 year old boy from Blaine, MN where he is a fourth-grader at 

Madison Elementary School. He also happens to receive therapy at the 

Kenny Kids Rehabilitation Program, Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at 

Mercy Hospital. At the age of two, Joel was diagnosed with developmental 

apraxia, a neurological disorder that has affected his speech. He attends 

speech therapy weekly and usually spends about 10 minutes in the therapy 

gym area before heading on to school. 

It was while using the gym space that he saw a need. The rehabilitation 

program had moved from the hospital’s lower level to the first floor. This 

move helped with the program’s accessibility for children and parents, but it 

was now in a smaller space. Joel saw that they needed a new exercise floor 

mat and new air walk therapeutic swing to make the best use of the new 

space. So he came up with a fund raising idea and 

embarked on his own initiative, raising over $500 to 

purchase the equipment. Joel’s family is not surprised 

that he came up with the fund raising idea. His 

family says, “He’s always had a big heart.”… “he has 

so much …compassion for others.” While at therapy, 

Joel has been very attentive to the needs of others, 

sharing and taking turns in the gym area.

Kenny Kids is the only program that addresses the 

multi-service rehabilitation needs of children within 

the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area and 

within the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. The 

program treats over 200 children each week with 

physical therapy, occupational therapy and speechlanguage 

therapy. Children from birth to age 18 are 

treated for a wide variety of conditions including 

cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, feeding and 

swallowing disorders, traumatic brain injury, nerve 

injuries and impairments, congenital anomalies,

speech and language disorders, general developmental 

delays, and therapies after orthopedic corrective surgeries. Children within a 60 mile radius are served at this clinic. 

Families are assisted in securing adapted equipment, augmentative communication devices and mobility systems. 

Joel is a perfect example that everyone can make a difference. For Joel, “Making Lives Work Through Play” 

is a reality.

Chris & Gary Gorham 

“Being lifelong residents of 

Anoka County, we both 

remember when the hospitals 

were built.” 

Chris and Gary not only remember when the hospitals 

were built, but they also have been involved with hospital 

philanthropy since the late 1980’s, when they began 

volunteering their time and resources to work on various 

committees for the annual Crystal Ball. Over the years, 

the Gorhams have been involved with the hospitals in 

many ways, and three years ago, Chris accepted a position 

on the Foundation’s Board of Directors for which she is 

presently Secretary. Chris has said, “I enjoy working on 

fundraising activities.”

Chris and Gary both graduated from Anoka High School. 

Even though they had been in school together, they did 

not meet until one evening at the Anoka County Fair. Shortly after getting married, they built their first house and 

continued building houses part-time for the next eight years. As Gary has stated, “if our marriage could survive the 

building of the first house, we could survive a lot of stuff.” In 1972, they made a decision to try homebuilding full 

time and formed Gorham Builders Inc. Over the next thirty years, they built homes and expanded their business to 

include land development. Gary and Chris retired in 2002, and the majority interest in the company was acquired 

by their son, Mike, and their daughter, Lisa. 

Of their many accomplishments, their family is the greatest source of pride for Chris and Gary. Mike and Lisa, and 

their respective spouses Jill and Guy, also went to Anoka High School. After they graduated from college, each had 

the option to join the family business or to pursue other interests. Both chose to continue the family legacy and 

joined Gorham Builders Inc. Chris and Gary have five grandchildren ranging in ages from 11-21. 

Chris and Gary both grew up in families where it was considered important to help those less fortunate. Their 

parents instilled these values in them, as exampled by Chris’ mother who received the McKnight Foundation’s 

Virginia McKnight Binger Awards in Human Service in 1985. They in turn have passed on these values to Mike 

and Lisa and their children. The family sponsors scholarships, adopts families in need, and helps the community, 

schools and organizations in many other ways. Chris has served on the board of directors of the Anoka County 

Community Action Program and finance committee of St. Stephen’s Church in Anoka. Gary has been a long time 

member of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities and has served as its president. 

Giving close to home has been their theme for many years. “We like to feel it and touch it.” And they have done 

just that, by being generous with their time and resources. Anoka County and Mercy & Unity Hospitals are among 

the most fortunate beneficiaries of their kindness and philanthropy.

Special Events 

2005 Golf Classic 

The theme of this year’s annual Golf Classic was “Helping 

Others While You Play.” And that is exactly what a field of 

132 golfers did on June 13. Even though skies sometimes 

appeared ominous and the players made periodic use of the 

umbrellas given by Timco Construction Inc. as registration 

gifts, all had a good time playing the course and the various 

course contests. After play, the 19th hole festivities and 

camaraderie in the clubhouse included beverages, dinner 

and awards. 

The tournament was presented by Timco Construction Inc, 

who has generously served as the presenting sponsor each 

year since the tournament began. Other major sponsors 

included NewMech Companies, Inc., Philips Medical 

Systems and Wasche Commercial Interiors. The Classic was 

held at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, MN. 

The proceeds from this year’s event were used in support of the “Heart of the Community” Capital Campaign. The 

Foundation is grateful to the many sponsors and individuals who continue to support the Classic each year. Over 

$37,000 was raised for the Capital Campaign. 

2nd Annual Sue Fischer Scholarship Golf Tournament 

The 2nd Annual Sue Fischer Scholarship for 

Nursing Excellence Golf Tournament was held on 

September 19, 2005 at Majestic Oaks Golf Club in 

Ham Lake, MN. The family of Sue Fischer chose 

that day because it marked the one-year anniversary 

of the day that Sue was tragically taken from them. 

They wanted it to be a day to remember her, grieve 

for her, and most of all celebrate the fact that she 

continues to be an enormous part of many lives. 

Because education was so important to Sue, a 

scholarship endowment fund was established in her 

name in the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation 

Tournament volunteers ready to play. 

as a means of honoring her memory and her years of 

dedicated service to patients and to the nursing 

profession. The fund provides scholarships to advanced study nursing students. In the spring of 2005, the first 

scholarships were awarded to three very deserving students. 

This year, over 172 golfers participated in this celebration of life. The event raised an additional $21,775 for the 

endowment fund in support of nursing scholarships. As Sue’s family has said, “Sue would have loved this event.”

Special Events 

Crystal Ball 

Like the theme of the Crystal Ball, April 2 was a clear “Starry, 

Starry Night.” Guests enjoyed an evening of dinner, 

entertainment, silent and live auctions, and other special treats. 

The live auction generated excited bidding for trips, a fishing 

boat and a lawn tractor and several other items. The capstone of 

the evening was the entertainment provided by Mary Beth 

Carlson, nationally recognized performing and recording artist 

and former Minnesota Teacher of the Year. 

This year’s event proceeds were used to support the Cardiac 

Centers “Heart of the Community” capital campaign and to 

purchase equipment for the growing and changing neonatal care 

units in the Women’s and Children’s Services of the hospitals. 


More than 500 individuals attended the Ball which was presented by Thomas E. McKee Medical Facilities, LLP 

(an affiliate of Timco Construction, Inc.). Over $120,000 was raised for the two programs. 

Women’s Day on the Links 

5th Annual Women’s Day on the Links 

The challenging course, The Links at Northfork, was again the host 

course for this year’s tournament on September 12. Sporadic drizzle 

during play did not dampen the enthusiasm of all who participated 

in the event as 27 foursomes, two major sponsors and twenty two 

hole sponsors teamed together for charity. 

All proceeds from the event, which exceeded $18,000, were used to 

purchase electronic speech generating devices for pediatric and 

adult patients who are unable to communicate because they are 

ventilator dependent, have had strokes or head injuries, or have 

birth defects. 

On the course, the women were treated to a variety of food, 

beverages, and gifts courtesy of the event sponsors. After play, 

evening activities included a delicious buffet dinner, silent auction 

and awards and prizes. 

A special thanks for a fun day is extended to our Signature 

Sponsors including Avalon Security Corporation and Xerox.

Auxiliary & Volunteer Services 

Giving Gifts of Time & Talent 

Mercy Hospital 

In 2005 over 500 volunteers at Mercy Hospital 

donated 40,380 hours in support of the hospital and 

community. In addition to the more than $93,000 

contributed towards hospital projects and programs, 

the Auxiliary awarded $20,000 in scholarships to area 

teens and hospital employees continuing their 

professional education. Funds are raised by the 

Auxiliary Coffee Shop and Gift Shop as well as 

through various fundraisers throughout the year. 

Volunteer Services and the Auxiliary support 28 

hospital service areas, assisting patients, visitors, and 

staff in areas such as the information desk, surgical 

waiting, and emergency department.

Unity Hospital 

During 2005, Unity Hospital benefited from more than 

54,000 hours worked by 347 volunteers. In addition to the 

Auxiliary’s daily caring and dedicated service to patients, 

employees and the community, through sales in the 

Auxiliary Gift Shop and fund raisers held during the year, 

the Unity Auxiliary was able to designate funds totaling 

$111,537 for four worthy causes: scholarships at Anoka- 

Ramsey Community College, scholarships to 

Unity employees furthering their education in 

nursing and health careers, community events and 

special hospital projects and programs.

Giving Back 

Community Giving Campaign 

Raised record high of more than $91,500 

This year’s Community Giving Campaign at Mercy & Unity 

Hospitals kicked-off on September 26. Employees of the 

hospitals were invited to consider various giving 

opportunities. Choices included support of the Mercy & 

Unity Hospitals Foundation for our family of clinical 

programs and services, the Caring for Co-Workers fund and 

scholarship funds. Employees were also invited to support our 

communities through the United Way and hurricane relief efforts 

for the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. 

Of the money raised, approximately $24,000 will support the 

network of United Way programs, designated private not-for-profit 


organizations, and Katrina hurricane relief efforts. Over $13,700 was designated for the Caring for Co-workers fund 

which supports employees of the hospitals who are in crisis. The balance of the funds raised was in support of the 

clinical programs and services of Mercy & Unity Hospitals. Thanks to all of our employees who answered the call of 

caring by contributing so generously. 

Holiday Food and 

Toy Drive 

Bringing holiday joy to children in need in our 

communities has been a long standing tradition 

at Mercy & Unity Hospitals. Our toy drives are 

conducted through the Foundation to benefit the 

Southern Anoka County Community 

Assistance Program through donations from 

Unity Hospital and Toys For Joy through 

donations from Mercy Hospital. Festively 

decorated donation boxes were distributed 

throughout the hospitals, and by mid 

December, more than 40 large boxes and 

tables were brimming with toys and half a 

ton of food for those in need in our 

communities. The generosity of our 

employees, volunteers and medical staff is 

greatly appreciated.

Become a member of the Legacy Society through planned giving 

Benefactors, patients and friends who have established an estate plan gift to Mercy & Unity Hospitals become 

members of the Legacy Society. Belonging is easy – simply tell us you have included us in your estate plan. 

While most estate gifts are bequests from wills, increasingly donors are discovering the advantages of “life income” 

gifts, such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities. In addition to receiving income for life, the donor 

receives a current income tax deduction and potential avoidance of capital gains tax.

Charitable Giving: Growing your gift with tax savings 

It may be too late to reduce last year’s tax burden, but the beginning of the year is the perfect time to make plans for 

reducing your taxes for the current year and beyond. Almost any type of charitable gift will reduce your taxes – and 

potentially allow you to give more than you may have thought. Here’s an example: 

Janice wants to support Mercy & Unity Hospitals Cancer Care Program. She is in the 30 percent tax bracket. She 

was originally going to give a gift of $7,000, but realized she could actually give $10,000 for the cost of $7,000. By 

taking a charitable deduction on her taxes for her $10,000 contribution, she reduces her taxable income by $10,000 

and saves $3,000 in taxes (30 percent of $10,000), making the net cost of her $10,000 donation only $7,000. 

Save even more by donating appreciated assets 

You derive additional tax advantages when you give appreciated assets, such as stocks, instead of cash to a nonprofit 

organization such as Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation. You generally receive a deduction equal to the market 

value of the asset, plus you pay no capital gains on the appreciated value. Here’s an example: 

Scott’s stock in Great Gifts Company has grown from its original value of $10,000 to a current value of $50,000. He 

wants to make a contribution to the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Cardiac Care Centers and wonders whether to sell 

the securities and give a cash gift, or give the stock to the Foundation to sell. Scott is advised to give the stock 

directly to the Foundation. By doing so, he receives an income tax deduction for $50,000, the fair market value of 

the stock, and avoids paying capital gains tax on the $40,000 gain from the sale of the stock. The Foundation, as a 

non-profit organization, can sell the stock without paying any tax.
