Guest Speaker: Mark Kelso
Mark Kelso has excelled as a pro football player, a
grade school teacher and now as a high school administrator.
He currently is the director of development at St. Mary’s High
School in Lancaster. Kelso also serves as the defensive coordinator
for the St. Mary’s varsity football team which won the
2004 Monsignor Martin Class A Championship.
Kelso may be best remembered as one of the most beloved
Buffalo Bills in history. He played free safety for the Bills from
1986-1993 where he consistently was at the top of the National Football
League’s interception leaders. His former head coach Marv Levy said Kelso
was the biggest overachiever he had coached as he rose from a practice
squad player to starter and then to team captain. Kelso also started in all
four of the Bills Super Bowls during the early ‘90’s. With 30 career
interceptions, he is third on Buffalo’s all-time list.
Kelso was a 10th-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in
1985, but was waived late during his first training camp with Philadelphia.
Buffalo’s player personnel director at the time, Bill Polian called and quickly
signed him.
Only three games into his Bills’ career in ‘86, Kelso hurt his left knee
and was placed on Injured Reserve for the remainder of the season. The
injury allowed him an opportunity to learn more about life in the NFL.
The following season, his first as a starter, Kelso was responsible for
an AFC co-leading six interceptions, as well as a touchdown, when he
returned a fumble 56 yards against the Browns. In ‘88, he had seven
interceptions for a career-high 180 return yards. And in ‘89, Kelso led the
Bills for the third consecutive year with six interceptions, which tied for fourth
in the NFL.
In ‘89, after "probably three or four concussions," Kelso began
wearing the now famous "gazoo" helmet; a protective foam covering over the
actual helmet, in order to help prevent any more concussions. He wore the
helmet for the final five years of his career. That helmet now sits in the Pro
Football Hall of Fame as a gift from Kelso’s teammate Jim Kelly upon his
induction to the Hall.
Kelso is also involved with many charities throughout Western New
York including Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Kelso is a proud graduate of The College of William & Mary where
he received his Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He was an
honorable mention all-American for the football team and an academic
all-American in the classroom. After his playing career, he went back to
school and received his Masters in Education from Canisius College. After
getting his Masters, Kelso taught for seven years as a fifth grade teacher at
Main Street Elementary School in East Aurora before coming to St. Mary’s.
Kelso and his wife, Robin, live in East Aurora with their three children,
Chelsey, 16; and two sons, Jesse, 13, and 11-year-old Cody.
Livingston Wins Award as Top Lineman
The Buffalo News
December 7, 2003
John Livingston of Eden has been named winner of the
inaugural lineman of the year award by members of the Trench
Trophy Committee. The award, sponsored by the Lancaster Elks
Lodge, takes into account a player's performance on and off the
field, as well as attitude.
Livingston, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound senior tackle, helped open holes for an
Eden backfield that averaged 267 yards per game. Eden finished 11-1, reaching
the New York State Class B semifinals losing to Chenango Forks.
"Our committee felt Livingston kind of portrayed the intensity that carried Eden as
far as they got," said committee chairman Len Kuhn. "We felt like he dominated on
both sides of the ball, even against Chenango Forks, and that's what made him
stand out above anyone else."
Livingston was chosen from a group of finalists that included Ryan Amos
(Cleveland Hill), Matt Graham (Orchard Park), Alex Haney (Lockport), Doug
Ingraham (Grand Island), Garvie Freeman (South Park), Justin Kindt (Depew),
Gary Maull (Olean), Brandon Randle (Burgard), Chris Smith (St. Francis), and Doug
Worthington (St. Francis).
Weber Wins Trench Trophy
The Buffalo News
December 5, 2004
Jason Weber, whose work in the trenches helped lead
the Orchard Park football team to the Section VI Class AA
championship, is this year's winner of the Trench Trophy as
Western New York's superior lineman.
Weber was a three-year starter for the Quakers and was named to the
All-Western New York first team. At defensive tackle, the 6- foot, 265-pound
senior captain led OP in tackles with 90, and at right guard he helped create
openings for running back Andy Pace (1,277 yards). Weber also finished fourth
in the state as a heavyweight wrestler last year, is a shot put and discus thrower
in track and is an Eagle Scout.
The Trench Trophy was created last year by the Lancaster Elks Club,
which will host an award ceremony Dec. 14 at which Weber will be presented
with a $500 scholarship. He will also be honored at Saturday's Western New
York football banquet.
The Trench Trophy Committee, which included more than 50 scouts and
coaches who attended games and viewed films throughout the season, picked an
honor roll of top linemen each week before selecting 11 finalists.
The other finalists were: Tim Brown (Burgard), Steve Coan (Frewsburg),
Matt Langworthy (Southwestern), Ian Margerum (Hamburg), Matt Miller
(Portville), Alex Port (North Tonawanda), Adam Rosner (Depew), Adriel Santiago
(South Park), Chris Smith (St. Francis) and Doug Worthington (St. Francis).
