Last year I commented on the Tsunami which
had ripped through communities in both Samoa
and Tonga and in 2008, the near collapse of our
economic system, a crisis which still reverberates
throughout the world. And now, out of the blue,
we as New Zealanders grieve the incomprehensible
loss of twenty-nine good men who have perished
on the West Coast in our greatest national disaster
since the Erebus tragedy in 1979.
I was a young teacher in those days at Auckland
Grammar School. No doubt, like many Wellington
College parents, I remember with chilling clarity
the message going up on our TV screens that the
Air New Zealand flight to the Antarctic had gone
missing. As the night continued, it became evident
that the flight would not return. I recall particularly
a young man by the name of Athol Duke who had
just completed his Bursary examinations. I recall
seeing him studying in the Grammar School library
two days before his family shouted him a trip on
In my Prizegiving speech, I reflected a little on the devastating impact of the
Christchurch earthquake and how disaster can strike a community without
warning and with calamitous effects.
that fateful flight to celebrate his completion of
school. Athol was a terrific young fellow, a typical
Y13 student, whose life was cruelly cut short.
It is on occasions like this that we are forced to
examine our core values. All too often, it is only
at times of crisis that communities pull together
and support those in need. The legendary spirit
of the West Coasters is evident right now as
heartbroken families face the bleak prospect of life
without fathers, brothers, sons, uncles, husbands
and partners. At schools, we focus quite rightly
on measurable outcomes – examination results,
sporting successes and other quantifiable data.
Every so often, however, it is imperative to step
back a little and to ask ourselves, what kind of
young men do we wish to produce; for those young
men are the building blocks of our community.
The West Coast mining disaster is a reminder of
the paradox that undermines both that community
and, indeed, New Zealand itself. On the one hand,
we celebrate the rugged individualism of New
Zealanders, personified in Wellington College Old
Boy, John Mulgan’s, famous novel of the 1930s,
Man Alone. On the other, we are ever mindful
of our reliance on those with whom we share our
lives and aspirations.
As we look forward to Christmas and family
celebrations, may we all have the West Coast
families in our thoughts and prayers, and think
of the importance of Community. Stromberg
expresses this well in a poem called The Geese he
wrote in 1982.
One day - lying alone in the lawn on my back
with only the drone of a distant train on some far
off track.
I saw before my eyes, 5,000 feet high or more,
a sight – which to this day, I must say,
I’ve seen nothing like before.
The head goose – the leader of the V –
suddenly veered out, leaving a vacancy
which was promptly filled by the bird behind.
The former leader then flew alongside,
the formation continued growing wide –
and he found a place at the back of the line.
They never missed a beat.
So that’s how I found out how the goose can fly
from way up North to way down South
and back again.
But he cannot do it alone, you see.
It’s something he can only do in Community.
These days it’s a popular notion,
and people swell with emotion and pride
to think of themselves on the eagle’s side,
Solitary
Self-sufficient
Strong
But,
We are what we are, that’s something we cannot
choose.
And though many would wish to be seen as the
eagle,
I think God made us more like the goose.
• From the Board of Trustees •
Tena koutou, talofa, ni hao – greetings from the
Board of Trustees.
December is the time of year when the academic
programme winds down but Board planning for
the next twelve months continues. At the time
of writing, this involved finalising the College
Budget for 2011. During this process, the Finance
Committee has assessed all the needs of the
school and every funding source available.
As a school, our income is divided between
Government Grants and Locally Raised Funds,
with the latter focused on Fees and Donations.
It also includes revenue from our International
Students.
It is clear from the figures available to the Board,
that Government funding for 2011 will again
go nowhere near meeting the expectations
the Wellington College community has for its
students. This gap is consistent with previous
years and once more raises the issues of what will
not be met by Government funding and how we
can make up the shortfall.
The Trustees and staff at Wellington College want
to provide your sons with the learning materials,
ICT equipment and extracurricular support you
should rightfully expect. We also want to enhance
and develop our buildings and grounds.
To meet these ends, in 2011 the combined Fee
and Donation for an individual student will total
$660. This represents an increase of 7.5% on
the figure for 2010. More details, including the
discounted figures for two and three son families
who currently attend Wellington College, are
available from the Bursary. They will be repeated
in a letter from the Headmaster and the Chairman
of the Board to be distributed early in the new
school year.
The Annual Fee for international students will
remain at $14,000 for 2011, rising to $16,000
in 2012. This remains comparable with other
schools of the calibre of Wellington College and
represents excellent value for students who
add much to our cultural diversity and in return
receive an outstanding NZ education.
As parents, no Trustee takes such figures lightly
and it is a reluctant – but realistic – move to
increase them. We recognise that for many
families these are substantial sums of money. But
we must emphasise that we rely on the income
source provided by Fees and Donations to deliver
the type of education you and your sons expect
from Wellington College.
We should also make two related points.
For 2010, 19% of Fees and Donations remained
outstanding at the time the December Collegian
went to press. This represents nearly $180,000.
This amount could have been spent on support of
our 1469 students.
In addition, Out of Zone students (who may have
obtained a place by ballot or as a sibling) totalled
28% of that unpaid sum. We would urge parents
of all students attending Wellington College to ask
why you want your sons to go here and what you
are able to contribute towards their education.
Although classified as a Decile 10 school, we cater
for a diverse student community from a variety
of economic backgrounds and we acknowledge
that in some cases, automatic payments may be
an option.
In closing, without your support, there will be
gaps which cannot be made up and no-one –
including the Board of Trustees - wants the boys
of this generation to miss out on any opportunity
available to them.
We would particularly like to thank those parents
who have donated additional sums, over and
above the amount for their own children. This is
a very generous gesture and is much appreciated.
On behalf of the Board, many thanks for your
support during 2010.
To those leaving, go well into the future – having
accepted the light, it’s time to pass it on. Be assured
that you will always be warmly welcomed here.
To those returning, and to those joining us for
the first time, enjoy your holidays with family and
friends and we look forward to seeing you next
year.
• From the Head Prefect •
With exams out of the way and the
school year having drawn to a
close, it’s hard to believe just how
quickly 2010 has gone. Yet over the last
twelve months, the College community
has continued to grow and has also
experienced a number of successes that
have only added to our reputation. On a
personal level too, this year has proved
a fine way to bring down the curtain on
a hugely rewarding period of my life in
which I’ve come to appreciate all that
this school can do for its students. As
the Class of 2010 bids farewell, I’d like
to thank all of those that have made this
year what it was and wish everybody all
the very best for 2011. To those who are
joining Wellington College next year, I’d
like to extend a very warm welcome as
you become a valued part of the Wellington College family.
This year has once again provided the College with a number of special
moments. Amongst the long list of achievements, we’ve seen many
highlights ranging from the performance of those involved in our musical
Jesus Christ Superstar right through to the dominance of our 1st XI Hockey
- who picked up the India Shield on their way to becoming Wellington
Regional Champions. Not to mention of course, the efforts of our 1st XV in
winning the annual Quadrangular tournament for an unprecedented eighth
year in a row. All of these feats perfectly illustrate the commitment and pride
that’s been shown in the College throughout the year.
For the Y13s, these final few weeks have been a chance to remember all of
the moments that have made the last five years so enjoyable. As a group,
we’ve witnessed three McEvedy wins, four incredible Stage Challenge
performances, five Quadrangular titles, over $300,000 raised for World
GiFT FRom SiR Ron BRieRley
2010 Head Prefect Team (L-R):
Atef Khan, Julian Chote, Marcus Playle (Head Prefect), David Gush
Unquestionably, our greatest benefactor over
the years has been Sir Ron Brierley. The Sir Ron
Brierley Cricket Pavilion, The Brierley Theatre and
the Brierley Fellowships for staff are all testament to
Sir Ron’s extraordinary generosity. In the last month,
Sir Ron has contributed further to his ‘alma mater’ by
gifting the Wellington College Foundation one million
GPG shares, valued presently at about $730,000. This
will provide a marvellous boost to the College in our current campaign.
I know I speak on behalf of my predecessor, Mr Harvey Rees-Thomas,
in saying what a wonderful supporter Sir Ron has been, both through his
financial support and behind the scenes. He is a very humble, kind man who
is very reluctant to be in the limelight. And yet his generosity, in particular to
Wellington College and the cricketing world, has had a profound impact on
so many. He is, unquestionably, one of New Zealand’s greatest businessmen
and one of the most significant pupils to pass through Wellington College.
Sir Ron, we as a College community thank you profoundly for your continued
interest and support of your old school.
Roger Moses, Headmaster
WELCOME TO OUR NEW READERS, particularly to parents of
the 2011 Year 9 intake. The Collegian is produced bi-monthly
for the Wellington College Community. Back copies can be
found on our website: www.wellington-college.school.nz
(About Us/News/The Collegian)
Vision and a wide variety of academic
success along the way. We’ve been
privy to some of the most defining
moments in the College’s recent past
and have thoroughly enjoyed all that
life at Wellington College has thrown at
us. To the staff and students that have
been a part of our time here, we thank
you for all that you’ve done and the
opportunities you’ve presented us.
Now though, after receiving the light,
it is our time to pass it on. However in
doing so, we know that not only will we
leave with fond memories but hopefully
a group of life-long mates as well.
Wherever we go, whatever path we
take, we will forever be bonded by the
time we’ve spent at Wellington College
and to have been a part of something so special has been a true privilege.
As we look forward to 2011, I have no doubt that this school will continue to
go from strength to strength. Such is the nature of Wellington College that
we always endeavour to build on what we’ve learnt, strive to be better than
before and it’s that very mind-set that promises big things for next year.
Finally, to have been Head Prefect at a school like ours has been a huge
honour and something I’ll always be very thankful for. On that note, I’d like to
offer my congratulations to the Head Prefect for next year, Rayhan Langdana,
who I’m sure will do an exceptional job (ably supported by another very
strong group of student leaders). My best wishes to everybody for next year
– regardless of what it is you may be doing – and I hope that you all have a
safe and enjoyable break.
Marcus Playle, Head Prefect
• From the BoT Student Representative •
So here I am in my second
month of Student Trusteeship!
Surprisingly, it hasn’t differed
too much from the first (perhaps
due to the presence of the
NCEA exams, which the entire
senior school has been sitting).
However, that is not to say
that the job so far hasn’t been
a thoroughly enjoyable and
interesting experience.
I have now attended two Board meetings, and I really appreciate how
integral the Board is to the College’s well-being and development.
It’s incredibly exciting, being privy to the workings of the school
and finding out what goes on behind the scenes. However, my job
extends beyond merely observing, and action on my part is required
to ensure the student voice gets heard on the Board. I have yet
to make a student trustee’s report (due to study leave), but next
year I urge any students with concerns they feel are worthy of the
attention of the Board to approach me. Hopefully I can play my part
in making 2011 match the heights of every previous year at the
College.
I wish you all a pleasant holiday season!
• From the College Community •
The Parents’ Association
The Parents’ Association has been affected increasingly by
the priority that parents give to supporting the numerous
sporting and cultural activities in which boys are involved.
Few parents now see the Parents’ Association as a vehicle for
strengthening their relationship with the College or for raising
concerns with the senior management team. This means that
there is little continuing justification for the two parent groups
within the College community. It makes sense to amalgamate
activities and responsibilities. What we are now doing is
morphing the Parents’ Association into College Mothers’ Inc.
Functions coordinated to date through the Parents’ Association
will continue. For example, the Father (or significant male) and
Son Breakfast, which was such a success this year, will again be
convened in mid-2011 by Sue Mahon and Caroline McGlynn-
Tran who have been stalwarts of the Parents’ Association.
This ends my eight years with the Parents’ Association as my
younger son now leaves Wellington College. The blazer which I
wore through my school days, and then buried at the back of a
wardrobe for 34 years until used successively by my sons, can
go back into storage for several more decades.
My thanks go to all who have contributed to the College over
many years through the Parents’ Association, whether in high
profile activities or the highly appreciated but unspectacular
duty, year after year, of providing refreshments for staff
at parent/teacher events. The committee of the Parents’
Association is grateful to College Mothers for their willingness
to now take on these roles.
I am sure I express the sentiments of all who have been involved
with the Parents’ Association, that it has been rewarding to
contribute to the well-being of Wellington College and the way
it so admirably shapes the young men who pass out through
its gates.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
WELCOME EVENING
WEDNESDAY, 9 FEBRUARY 2011
7.00pm
BRIERLEY THEATRE, WELLINGTON COLLEGE
We cordially invite you to the Wellington College
Music Department Welcome Evening.
A presentation will be given on
our extracurricular programme
and Itinerant Lessons, with details
on how you can enrol and become involved
in the Music Department.
All students and parents are most welcome.
Pasifika Parents Support Group
It has been said that where there is support and encouragement, hope is
often realised.
2010 has been a full-on year for our parents group and the many activities
that we planned have all been successfully completed. This year for the first
time, we witnessed the largest number of Pacific boys leaving the College who
have started in Y9 to Y13, - 19 in total. As this article is written, many are now
‘Old Col Boys’ with much to look forward to as they move on to the real world.
Our thanks to our parents of this group that have supported our activities in
ensuring our Pasifika boys achieve.
This year, we also held a number of Achievers’ evenings, now regular
events in the College Calendar. These are coordinated with staff and guest
speakers, providing informational, guidelines, presentations, discussions on
NCEA, subject selection, applications to University, and study techniques to
our parents, and students. Our hosts and speakers have provided personal
experiences in their presentations, giving impact to students and parents and
the message they were sending.
Our guest speaker, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, MP provided an inspirational farewell
speech to our leavers at the Fiafia evening. And the celebration didn’t stop
there. We also welcomed a new generation of Y9s for 2011. I think by now,
the Leavers ‘Taualuga’ dance has gained momentum and our staff are not as
shy anymore to show off their Samoan siva!
Thanks must go to Headmaster, Roger Moses and his staff for ending
another successful year for Pasifika students and supporting the PPSG and its
initiatives. We are all looking forward to a new and exciting 2011.
Gateway Programme
The Gateway programme has been running
extremely successfully for the last four years.
During 2010, 35 students experienced a
variety of work placements, one day a week,
while earning credits for unit standards linked
to their career choices. This has given them the
opportunity to experience firsthand, jobs they
may consider in the future and gain an insight into
the working world.
During the 2010 Gateway programme, most
of the boys achieved their First Aid and Health
and Safety qualifications and some successfully
completed courses at Whitireia Polytechnic.
The success of Gateway was celebrated in
November with a graduation ceremony. A light
supper was served and the guests included
the students, teachers, parents and Gateway
employers, as well as Headmaster, Roger Moses.
If you feel you could help with a placement of
future Gateway students by providing them the
opportunity to work in your business one day a
40-Hour World Vision Runathon 2011
week, please contact Mrs Dawn Hall (Gateway
Coordinator) Tel: DDI: 803 0325 or 027 455 3855.
I would like to thank the following businesses for
their participation in the programme this year,
allowing our students to gain valuable experience
in their particular industry:
In 1998, after previous years of largely unproductive attempts at starving 1500 boys for
40 hours to raise money for World Vision, the decision was made to rejuvenate the
World Vision 40-Hour Famine at Wellington College, to create a fun and active event
that the whole school could get behind, and the Runathon was born.
The Runathon is a student-led event that continues for 40 hours. Wellington College
boys run laps of the 800m short circuit around the school, supervised by College staff.
The students are encouraged to ask family members, neighbours and friends to sponsor
them for their efforts.
Students are split into ten teams, each with a different sponsor. Every time a team
member completes a lap, as well as raising money, he earns his team a point. The points
are tallied on a board set up at the start/finish line which creates a strong competitive
spirit amongst the students, encouraging them to run the most laps and earn the most
points and money as they compete for the Lendrum Shield, donated by an Old Boy that
started the Runathon in 1998. This contributes to the huge success of the event, with the
full support of the College and immense school spirit shown throughout.
The Runathon is a massive event in the school calendar, and is more than just a ‘big run.’
There are events and competitions leading up to the big weekend, such as the ‘dinosaur
game,’ and the ever popular milk-scull. It is a hugely popular event every year, and a
great way especially for some of the newer boys to the school to see what Coll school
spirit is all about.
Since 1998, Wellington College has raised over $550,000 for World Vision, with the money
we raise going to our project of helping kids less fortunate than us, in Ibwera, Tanzania.
The planning for the 2011 Runathon is well and truly under way, with a large group of
corporate sponsors just about finalised, our team leaders selected, an awesome T-shirt
design completed, and the possibility of some special guests turning up to run some
laps. The 2011 Runathon takes place on Friday, 11 and Saturday 12 March. We want to
raise $85,000. This would be a national record for any school in New Zealand, but more
importantly, would greatly benefit the boys and girls in Tanzania, not much different to
us, but with so fewer opportunities. We hope you’ll all get behind the Runathon next
year, have a wicked time, run heaps of laps, and raise lots of money. So get ready for it!
• From the Wellington College old Boys’ Association •
It’s been a busy few months for the WCOBA. In
mid-October, we hosted the Class of 1970 - back
for their 40 Years on Reunion. Now up to our
seventh 40 Years On Reunion, the competition
gets tougher as each year group tries to outdo the
previous year in attendance and behaviour.
The successful format of registration, attending
Assembly followed by the tour of the College
works well and helps break the ice as our guests
meet up again after forty years in most cases. By
the time the Class photo has been taken, followed
by the Cocktail Party and Formal Dinner, there’s no
stopping our Old Boys as they begin to reminisce
and recall memories from forty-odd years ago.
Headmaster, Roger Moses, Deputy Principal and
Old Boy, Robert Anderson, new WCOBA President,
Brian Smythe and I have attended a number of
events around the country recently. First up in
September, was the Horowhenua Branch Dinner,
held at the Manukau Hotel. Subsequent events
included Cocktail Parties in Christchurch and
Nelson, Dinner at Auckland Grammar Old Boys’
Pavilion and lunch in Tauranga. Mr Moses and I
also attended a dinner for our Sydney Old Boys
and it was particularly pleasing to welcome three
recent Old Boys (recipients of the Darryl Courtney-
O’Connor ICM Tourism Scholarship) to the dinner.
It’s always a delight to meet a good number of Old
Boys at these events and bring them up-to-date
on our news of the College.
Our last formal function for 2010 was to welcome
our most recent Old Boys into the ‘brotherhood’.
The 2010 Leavers’ Lunch was another great
annual occasion to bid our Y13 students farewell
and recount the memories of the past five years.
There were some great speeches and the lunch
concluded with a rousing haka by the students
to Mr Moses. Thank you to the good number of
students who ‘donated’ their textbook fee to the
Association. Your contribution not only gives you
Life Membership, but also assists the Association
in producing the annual Lampstand magazine,
as well as supporting the end-of-year prizes,
students who go on the Spirit of Adventure and
other College endeavours.
Head Prefect, Marcus Playle
The annual Lampstand magazine
is mailed to around 10,000 Old Boys as
well as the current Y13 students and highlights
Old Boys making their name in the news – albeit
academia, sporting, the arts and career fields.
Much of our focus in the last few months has been
on our sporting Old Boys; seven in the Wellington
Lions, six in the Wellington Firebirds, three in the
Phoenix, Peter Taylor with Storm Uru winning
a bronze at the World Rowing Champs and of
course our Silver Medallist at the Commonwealth
Games – Gareth Kean.
Recent Old Boy, Peter Clark, a Victoria University
School of Chemical and Physical Sciences Masters
student, has been awarded a prestigious Woolf
Fisher Scholarship, enabling him to study at
Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Peter
intends to continue his studies in chemistry.
Last week, Mr Koro Bessho (Class of 1969), and
now the Deputy Vice-Minister for Foreign Policy
in the Japanese Government made a return visit
to his old school. Mr Bessho’s father was the
Japanese Ambassador here in Wellington in the
late 1960s.
International Director, Mr Mike Pallin, Deputy
Principal, Mr Robert Anderson and Japanese
Teacher, Mr Shinichi Muroya welcomed Mr
Bessho and gave him a tour of the College,
stopping in at one of the Junior Japanese classes.
The link between the College and the Association
is an integral part of both our history and our
future. News of our Old Boys is always imparted
onto the College, albeit in assemblies, the
monthly newsletters, in display cabinets around
the College and in the classroom. It is also
rewarding to have Old Boys give their time back to
the College and our students by way of coaching,
training, performing, motivating, mentoring and
employing and for these, I thank you on behalf of
our College community.
MyColl is our online student Learning
Management System which was introduced at
the beginning of 2010. MyColl allows teachers
to make normal course content available online to
students 24/7 including a range of web resources
and interactive content to be integrated into their
courses.
MyColl has also become a very effective
communication site for the College Community –
students, staff and parents access the site for all
sorts of information. Just some of these include:
• Academic information such as course selection
information, exam timetables, revision advice
• Student Services Information such as career
services, counselling and chaplaincy services,
learner services and library services
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME HOMESTAYS
REQUIRED
During the school year, we receive a number of
international students from many countries for
two or three weeks to six months or a year. Our
Homestay Manager, Mrs Sue Mackay, would like to
increase the pool of homestays. Except in the case
of exchange students (AFS, EF and Rotary), a weekly
payment of $220 is made to the homestay family.
If you are interested in our homestay programme or
know of others who might be, please contact Sue at
the College on 802 2520 ext. 821 or 021 717449. Sue
can provide detailed information about the homestay
programme and what homestay families can expect.
• Extracurricular Information is extensively
covered on the site with our Arts, Sports,
other pages. These pages are all publicly accessible
and new students can explore the great range of
what is on offer at Wellington College before they
arrive at the school.
Parents can also access information about who
• IN-HOUSE DEBATING
2010 has been a great year for the In-house debating competition with the
junior competition being particularly popular.
Duncan McLachlan did an excellent job of running the competition and next
year’s Y9 students are encouraged to get involved in this enjoyable activity in
2011. All interested Y9 students are placed in in-house teams, are coached
by senior students and the debates take place at lunchtime. Speaking and
structuring an argument are great skills to learn and the in-house competition
creates a relaxed environment in which to start developing these skills. Like
Duncan, you may end up in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Debating
Team! Thanks must go to Duncan for running the Junior competition and to
Jimmy Feeney-Toebes and Ryan Mahon for the good work they did with the
senior competition.
• YEAR 9 DRAMA FESTIvAL
In the weeks following school exams, all Y9 students are involved in the
annual Y9 Drama Festival. Under the direction of their English teacher, each
class is writing, producing and performing in a play that will be staged in the
Brierley Theatre in the last week of term.
As in previous years we have five fantastic tutors, generally recent Toi
Whakaari graduates, to assist. Emma Draper, Megan Alexander, Michael Trigg,
James Hacon and Philip Ward are doing a great job, inspiring and directing
our young talent with huge energy and creativity. We
are looking forward to enjoying productions such as Orcs
on a Plane, A Mexican Love Story, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
and Animals vs Humans.
• From College mothers •
Wellington College Mothers wishes everyone
in the College community a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year. Term Four is a time to
reflect on the year, and offers us the opportunity
to celebrate and acknowledge outstanding
performance as well as to thank those who have
supported us. This term saw College Mothers
involved with the Sports and Cultural Awards, the
Senior Prize Giving, the 2011 Y9 induction evening
and a farewell lunch for parents of Leavers.
At the recent Parents’ of Leavers function, I would
like to thank Sandra Dent and Mary McIntyre
for organising this event and their very capable
team of Jane Bradshaw, Vicky Hughson, Carmelle
Wickbom, Viv Boyle, Stacey Campbell and Ellen
Chuan Yang for creating and hosting a wonderful
lunch.
This is a special time for Wellington College
Mothers, as we thank the many people who help
and support us, including the Uniform Room
staff who are the business and College interface
of Wellington College Mothers. The Uniform
Room Manager, Sonja Braddock and her team
Wynn, Catherine, Madeleine and Alison do a
wonderful job and we are very lucky to have them
supporting the College. Special mention must be
made of Sonja and Wynn who celebrated their
tenth anniversary in the Uniform Room.
• From the Uniform Shop •
College Mothers also provided the supper
after Prize-giving. I would like to thank Nicki
Wilson for organising the event and her efficient
team of Emma Lawler, Mary Urquhart-Hay, Clare
Smit, Philippa Bascand, Kate Edmond, Carol Clarke
and Vicky Hughson for their invaluable assistance.
In addition, the 2011 Y9 introduction evening
supper was organised by Shelley Hancock, Karen
McGregor and Mazz Scannell.
It has been an exciting year. The major project
we undertook in 2010 was a contribution to the
renovated Girvan Library. The new Library has
resulted in a very efficient workspace with great
study areas. On an ongoing basis, we contributed
towards the Chaplain, Attendance Officer, Musac
assistant, and Library resources in addition to
providing hospitality to visiting sports teams and
organised lunches for groups within the College
- teachers, prefects, parents of Y9 students and
parents of leavers, as well as providing suppers
for school events such as prize-giving. In addition,
we hold monthly Wednesday forums featuring
groups within the College with the occasional
outside speakers. The Headmaster or a member
of the Senior Management team also speaks and
responds to questions from the floor. College
Mothers also supports the communication
To the College Mothers Executive, I would
like to say, thank you for all your hard work and
sheer talent in supporting the College to the
extent you do. We could not achieve half of
what we deliver if we did not have a group of
committed members. I would also like to thank
all our helpers throughout the year. Thank you
for donating your time and skills to represent
the wider College community at the variety of
functions we are involved with.
This is my last Collegian as President and I would
like to extend my deep gratitude to all of you who
have supported me over the past three years. I
would also like to remind those who have sons
leaving this year that we welcome any uniform
donations for our vintage rack in the Uniform
Room. Finally I would like to take this opportunity
to wish all of you a safe and happy summer break
and look forward to seeing you next year.
