By Sea<br />

The cook Strait ferries that operate between<br />

<strong>Wellington</strong> <strong>and</strong> Picton offer a stunning three hour<br />

journey through <strong>Wellington</strong>’s beautiful harbour <strong>and</strong><br />

the picturesque Marlborough Sounds. currently<br />

two companies service this route: Interisl<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />

Bluebridge cook Strait Ferries.<br />

By Road<br />

Located on two of New Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s major highways -<br />

State Highway 1 <strong>and</strong> State Highway 2 (which follows<br />

the classic New Zeal<strong>and</strong> Wine Trail) – <strong>Wellington</strong> is<br />

very accessible from most North Isl<strong>and</strong> locations.<br />

Using <strong>Wellington</strong> city as a base, you can easily<br />

explore the surrounding regions by car <strong>and</strong> make<br />

the most of your time in this wonderful part of New<br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong>.<br />

coach transport companies also service the North<br />

<strong>and</strong> South isl<strong>and</strong>s. Intercity <strong>and</strong> Newmans are<br />

the two main coach companies, but there are also<br />

smaller services such as Tranzit who operate in the<br />

lower North Isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

By Train<br />

Rail company Tranz Scenic operates a popular<br />

overl<strong>and</strong> scenic service between Auckl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Wellington</strong> which takes approximately 12 hours.<br />

<strong>Wellington</strong>’s regional rail network is run by Tranz<br />

Metro <strong>and</strong> operates from <strong>Wellington</strong> to Kapiti <strong>and</strong><br />

The Classic New Zeal<strong>and</strong> Wine Trail is a signposted<br />

380km (240 mile) self-drive touring route that leads<br />

travellers off the beaten track. Travel through five<br />

of New Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s most interesting <strong>and</strong> scenic<br />

regions, including three major wine growing areas<br />

that account for more than 70% of the country’s<br />

wine production.<br />

While the main focus of the journey is wine <strong>and</strong><br />

food, the route also serves up all kinds of urban,<br />

rural, cultural <strong>and</strong> adventure experiences.<br />

downtown only 2 kilometres wide. Walking is<br />

one of the best ways to get around, while the<br />

transport infrastructure will enable you to go<br />

further afield with ease.<br />

Taxis can be hired from cab ranks throughout<br />

the city, ordered over the phone or visitors can<br />

arrange collection at city hotels, the railway<br />

station or ferry terminals.<br />

<strong>Wellington</strong>’s overl<strong>and</strong> rail network Tranz Metro<br />

takes visitors throughout the region – journey<br />

just 15 minutes to Hutt Valley or another 45<br />

minutes on the same line to <strong>Wairarapa</strong>. The<br />

same rail network takes visitors on a 20 minute<br />

journey to Porirua <strong>and</strong> then on to the Kapiti<br />

coast.<br />

GO <strong>Wellington</strong> is the main public bus operator<br />

in <strong>Wellington</strong> city, running regular scheduled<br />

services around the city centre <strong>and</strong> suburbs.<br />

Buses operate every day from 7am to 11pm<br />

on most routes. Individual tickets may be<br />

purchased from the bus driver or buy a<br />

Snapper card - a prepaid card that enables<br />

users to swipe on <strong>and</strong> off the bus with ease.<br />

These are available from easily identifiable<br />

retail outlets around the city. The Airport Flyer<br />

bus takes visitors between the airport <strong>and</strong><br />

downtown <strong>Wellington</strong>, <strong>and</strong> north to Hutt Valley.<br />

The Dominion Post Ferry runs a regular<br />

service between <strong>Wellington</strong> city, Petone <strong>and</strong><br />

Eastbourne/Days Bay, with some services<br />

stopping at Matiu/Somes Isl<strong>and</strong>. The commuter<br />

ferry terminal is located on Queens Wharf on<br />

<strong>Wellington</strong>’s waterfront.<br />

About Hutt Valley<br />

It’s the easy accessibility to the outdoors which makes<br />

Hutt Valley special. choose from dozens of well-kept tracks<br />

that weave alongside rivers, through bush <strong>and</strong> into the<br />

mountains. Walk, cycle or take a quad bike expedition to<br />

capture panoramic views through valleys, across <strong>Wellington</strong><br />

Harbour <strong>and</strong> down to the Southern Alps. Stagl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

Wildlife Reserve is perfect for getting up close to New<br />

Zeal<strong>and</strong>’s native wildlife <strong>and</strong> the Hutt River offers pristine<br />

conditions for trout fishing. The Lord of the Rings fans will<br />

want to explore Kaitoke Regional Park, the filming location<br />

for Rivendell.<br />

Hutt Valley continues <strong>Wellington</strong>’s thriving arts scene<br />

at The Dowse Art Museum <strong>and</strong> Expressions Art &<br />

Entertainment centre takes creativity to the upper end of<br />

the valley. Other excellent galleries representing different<br />

styles include Hutt Art, Williams, Oyster <strong>and</strong> LeSa.<br />

Jackson Street, Petone is considered a ‘place of national<br />

significance’. It’s filled with cafes, galleries <strong>and</strong> visitors<br />

can taste pure artesian spring water at Te Puna Wai Ora –<br />

Spring of Life. The whole street is listed with the Historic<br />

Places Trust.<br />

Excellent beaches wrap around the upmarket seaside<br />

villages of Days Bay <strong>and</strong> Eastbourne. There are so many<br />

stories along this coast including ship wrecks <strong>and</strong> taniwha<br />

(Maori mythological creature); no wonder world famous<br />

writers like Katherine Mansfield have been influenced by<br />

this magnificent stretch of coast.<br />

Golfers can choose from 10 picturesque courses within a<br />

30 minute drive. Two of these courses, Royal <strong>Wellington</strong><br />

Golf club <strong>and</strong> Hutt Golf club, are internationally renowned<br />

for their immaculate presentation <strong>and</strong> have hosted high<br />
