Tornados ranked 8th in Preseason Conference Poll<br />

Brevard College opens ranked eighth last season by the South Atlantic Conference<br />

head coaches. The Tornados received eight total votes in the preseason poll.<br />

Carson-Newman leads the preseason poll, having clinched a share of the SAC Title<br />

in 2008. The Eagles received 62 votes and six first place votes. C<strong>at</strong>awba and Mars<br />

Hill were the other teams in the conference to receive first place votes, with one<br />

apiece.<br />

FCS opponent<br />

Brevard’s game on the road against Gardner-Webb is the Tornados second game<br />

against an FCS opponent since the program was reinst<strong>at</strong>ed in 2006. Brevard took on<br />

the Runnin’ Bulldogs last season <strong>at</strong> Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., falling<br />

28-14. The Tornados faced the Runnin’ Bulldogs four times from 1934-1950,<br />

splitting the series with GWU, 2-2.<br />

Brevard College has moved their games back to Brevard Memorial Stadium after<br />

spending the 2010 season <strong>at</strong> Asheville HS Memorial Stadium. The transition back<br />

to Brevard will be key to the Tornados as BC will be welcomed back by their fans<br />

with the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background of the stadium.<br />

The Tornados put their first four year class of seniors on the field in the 2009<br />

season. With the program restarting in 2006, only one player remains from th<strong>at</strong><br />

inaugural group in fullback Derek Church. With Church suffering injuries in multiple<br />

years, he is ready to make an impact and move up in the BC offensive record books<br />

in his senior campaign.<br />

Derek Church is currently second in the SAC rushing standings, averaging 88.7<br />

yards per game on the ground. Aaron Reese is fifth overall, averaging 71.3 yards<br />

per game.<br />

Reese and Church are also in the top 10 in total offense, with Reese in ninth<br />

averaging 125.3 yards per game, while Church is accumul<strong>at</strong>ing 88.7 per contest<br />

Church and Kelvin Jeter are in the top 10 in the SAC in all-purpose yards, with<br />

Church averaging 104.0 yards per contest, while Jeter is <strong>at</strong> 98.3 yards per game<br />

Anthony Shakir, Donovan Barker, Darren Walker and C.J. Wilson are all tied for first<br />

overall in the conference standings with one interception apiece<br />

Reese is sixth overall in the SAC in QB efficiency, with a r<strong>at</strong>ing of 98.7.<br />

Jeter is fourth in the conference in kick return average, with 21.0 yards per kick<br />

return <strong>at</strong>tempt<br />

Eric W<strong>at</strong>ts leads the South Atlantic Conference in punting average, booming the ball<br />

49.1 yards per <strong>at</strong>tempt<br />

Church is tied for third overall in the SAC in scoring per game, averaging 6.0 points<br />

per contest, while Austin Clark is seventh in averaging 5.7 points per game<br />
