RVP Report
It is hard to believe as I
pen this final note to the
best Region in the
NASPA world, how
quickly these two years
have gone by. I said at
the beginning that I was
humbled by your faith in
me and that feeling has
never wavered. That is
not to say that there
haven’t been challenges
unforeseen. Who could
have known that we
would fall into the “Great
Recession” or that
NASPA and ACPA would
be engaged in serious
conversations about unification.
The economy has ravaged
the budgets of virtually
every public and private
college or university
throughout our region.
The impact includes cutbacks
in programs, staff,
position replacement, professional
development and
more. But it has also
brought out the best of
who we are as we adapt
to these challenges while
striving to best serve the
needs of our students. As
I have traveled to state
meetings, talked with delegates
at our fall conference
and your Region III Board,
I am moved by the resilience
and determination to
persevere despite the challenges.
I firmly believe
that we as a profession
and as members of
NASPA will emerge
stronger than ever as the
importance of the full student
experience demands
sustained and effective
partnerships between student
affairs and the faculty.
It is in this spirit of collaboration
that the discussions
between NASPA and
ACPA were both initiated
and have evolved into
the exploration of
what a unified organization
might look like.
Mike Segawa, our
NASPA President, discusses
where we are in
the NASPA Forum
which we have also
included in this newsletter
for your review.
I hosted an open forum
at the SACSA Conference
in November to
discuss the unification
discussion and received
tremendous feedback
from faculty, seasoned,
mid-level, young professionals
and graduate
students alike. While
the overall support
seems strong, there
was one theme that
came from those conversations,
it was that,
while many support;
much more information
needs to be
known about the impact,
structure and financial
status of both
organizations before
the membership is
ready to vote.
The NASPA Board met in December and that was the message that I, and other Regional Vice Presidents
communicated to the Board. The end result was a postponement of the membership vote until
more discussion and information is shared with the members of both organizations. Thus, rather than a
vote at the conclusion of our respective national conferences, it may well be delayed until the late summer
or fall.
As my time in this role concludes at the March NASPA Conference, allow me to close with a few
thanks. First off, the Region III Board has been amazing. They have used their dedication to you, Region
III, and to our profession to continue to provide multiple professional development opportunities, despite
many obstacles. Two, I must single out three individuals whose roles with Region III involve significant
time and personal sacrifice. Jeanine Ward-Roof, our Treasurer/Secretary is serving her second
term. Her stewardship of our resources and behind the scenes organization has been exceptional and is
the key to whatever success I might have enjoyed. Anthony DeSantis is the best Membership Coordinator
in the country and we remain the largest and best Region in NASPA largely due to his determined
efforts. Finally, your newsletter editor, Jen Day Shaw, has done this for two terms as well and her efforts
to enhance communication through this medium and others have been exceptional. Please take a
moment to thank these three and the entire Board for their time, dedication and sacrifices on our behalf.
Finally, as I ready to pass the gavel, know that you are in such good hands with the incoming Region III
Vice President, Joy Smith from Clemson University. She is the consummate professional and her enthusiasm,
organizational skills and spirit will draw us all in. We have much to be proud of – incredible institutions
that stretch across the country and, due to sound stewardship, strong financial resources and
among the best graduate prep programs in the country. We have the strength and leadership to be
even better.
Thank you for giving me this chance of a professional lifetime.
January Forum Article
Dear Colleagues:
Welcome back to a new semester/quarter and I hope you were able to enjoy a restful and peaceful
holiday season. As the countless retrospective looks at the first ten years of this millennium reinforced,
we have been living through a time of great upheaval which I believe makes times of rejuvenation all
that more critical. So I do hope you had, as I did, rejuvenating times with family and friends to welcome
this new decade.
Your Board of Directors met last month and continued to be incredibly effective stewards of this association.
At the top of our “to do” list was the question of unification. After a number of hours of discernment,
the Board passed a resolution that continued our commitment to this concept and process.
The ACPA Governing Board was at the same time engaged in a unification discussion and also passed a
resolution with very similar sentiments. The language of the two resolutions is however slightly different
so the Steering Team (presidents, presidents-elect, past presidents, and executive directors) will be
meeting in a few weeks to reconcile those differences as well as plan the next steps in this journey.
In the midst of what may turn out to be a watershed Board meeting, I admittedly found myself not always
contemplating the details of the work before us but rather being repeatedly struck by the quality
of collegiality, leadership, and integrity I was experiencing with this Board of Directors. To be sure
there were moments of passionate exchange but the commitment to our profession and association
was omnipresent in our discussions. Colleagues consistently demonstrated their ability to represent
their constituencies, articulate their own beliefs, listen intently to the views of others, and find a way of
balancing these sometimes competing values. The ability to lead and have difficult conversation took
center stage and my one regret was that you and our students did not have an opportunity to see this
occur.
So no matter where this unification path collectively takes us, I am grateful that you have provided this
Board of Directors to be the leaders of our profession at this moment in time. They are a talented
group of colleagues who have already proven themselves worthy of your confidence and support. I
know they will continue to be the kind of responsible leaders who will step forward and make the most
of the opportunities afforded us.
Join colleagues in NASPA Region III as we prepare for Reflections on Our
Practice in Ponte Vedra, FL, June 13-16, 2010. This year‟s symposium will
allow us to explore topics and issues in depth while focusing our programmatic
efforts on national trends and issues and their impact on higher education,
campus climate, multiculturalism and diversity initiatives, student transition,
and other “hot topics” on our campuses and in our students‟ experiences.
We will reflect on our student affairs practices together as we strive to
become better student affairs professionals.
This year‟s symposium will take place at the beautiful Ponte Vedra Inn and
Club. The 2010 Symposium Committee encourages you to visit our website
Renovations
Since 2000, Housing & Residence Life has spent
80 million dollars on renovations to its 15 residence
halls. As of the fall of 2009, every residence
hall has been completed renovated. Renovations
have included: creating halls with private
bathrooms, complete bedroom, bathroom, and
kitchen upgrades to include flooring, ceilings,
HVAC units, fixtures and furniture, window and
door replacement, removing trash chutes and creating
outdoor trash compactors, and mechanical
room upgrades.
As a part of our renovations, we also built a
chilled water plant that supplies air conditioning
to 11 residence halls and 7 academic buildings.
This plant allowed us to eliminate the individual
chillers and cooling towers in each of these buildings.
During the summer of 2008, we built a Food Service
Building in an area of campus that has a high
residential population but no food options. The
Tower Food Court houses the first Popeye‟s
Chicken and Biscuit on a college campus, madeto-order
southwest cuisine at Zoca‟s, delicious ice
cream from Edy‟s Ice Cream, and a convenience
store. This is the second convenience store on
campus.
Learning Centers in the Halls
The Learning Center (TLC) at WKU was busting
at the seams, so in an initiative created by one of
our residence hall directors, we partnered with the
Academic Advising and Retention Center
(AARC) to open two satellite learning centers in
the residence halls last spring. They are located at
Pearce Ford Tower (PFT: http://www.wku.edu/
advising/index.php?page=tlc-of-pft ), a building
that houses over 800 students on 26 floors and
one in Douglas Keen Hall (all male building that
houses nearly 400 students: http://www.wku.edu/
advising/index.php?page=tlc-of-keen ). They
have been very successful again this fall. This has
been a terrific partnership with Academic Affairs.
We are looking to expand centers in the future to
other residence halls on campus.
Sustainability in the Residence Halls
Housing and Residence Life is excited to announce
“The Building Dashboard!” Dashboard is
a real-time electricity monitoring module that you
can use from any computer. Using it allows you
to look at the electricity usage in your hall
(updated every 60 seconds). Residents and hall
directors can compare their hall‟s usage with
other residence halls. You can view your buildings
usage in various timescales and it will also
translate usage into a variety of units. The goal of
Dashboard is to educate residents about energy
usage and to promote conservation. The website
is http://www.wku.edu/housing/dashboard.htm.
Shantytown
On October 21 , Housing and Residence Life and
the Residence Hall Association hosted the 18 th
Annual Shantytown. Shantytown is a program
that focuses on homelessness and allows students
to get a small glimpse of what is like to be homeless.
Students who participate are asked to build
a cardboard shanty the night of the program on
the South Lawn. We also encourage students to
donate money that is given to our University‟s
chapter of Habitat for Humanity or to bring can
goods that are given to a local food pantry. There
is also an educational component to the program
whether it is a speaker, movie clip, or statistics

Page 6
that help the students gain a better perspective of
homelessness.
Living Learning Communities (LLCs)
We are continually looking for opportunities to
grow our LLCs and this year has seen the addition
of several new programs with our academic partners.
We currently have LLCs with the Bowling
Green Community College (A.C.E.S. – Academic
Community Engaging Students), the Gordon Ford
College of Business with private support from a
college alum James L. Marshall (J. L. Marshall
Business LLC), the College of Health & Human
Services in partnership with Greenview Regional
Hospital, R.O.T.C., the Ogden College of Science
& Engineering (WISE-UP; Women in Science &
Engineering Undergraduate Program), and International
Student and Scholar Services.
Themed Living Option (TLOs)
In addition to LLC options for residential students,
we also continue to enhance themed living
options for students. A TLO is a program for students
who would like to live with other residents
who share a particular interest in a major, social
or cultural activity, or hobby. We currently offer
TLOs: Education, FIT, Honors, Men of Distinction,
Music, and Women of Western (W.O.W.).
We will offer an Outdoor Activities TLO next
year.
Intramural-Recreational Sports Department
The Raymond B. Preston & Activities Center on
Western Kentucky University's campus offers
students, faculty, and staff one of the finest campus
recreation facilities in the country. Constructed
in 1992, the Preston Center added a new
dimension to recreational activities, intramural
sports, and open recreation for the university
community. Components of the Preston Center
include a weight room, fitness room, gymnasium,
dance studio, racquetball courts, swimming pool,
a pro-shop, the Outdoor Recreation & Adventure
Leadership & Volunteerism
University Centers & Leadership Programs has
implemented various programs to promote leadership
and volunteerism among the student body of
Western Kentucky University, as well as high
school students from all over the state of Kentucky.
The office of University Centers and Leadership
Programs (UCLP) exists to serve the University
community in a variety of ways. The office's
primary mission is two-fold. First, UCLP is
charged to enhance student life and development
by facilitating student involvement in organizations,
providing broadly based programs of entertainment,
cultural diversity and activities, and
presenting opportunities to develop leadership,
social, organizational, and interpersonal
skills. This portion of our mission directly regards
the enhancement of citizenship and leadership
development.
The second aspect of UCLP's mission is to provide
direction, management, and leadership to the
student union programs. The student centers
support the entire campus community. Our
charge is to unify campus life while providing a
variety of facilities to the students, staff, and segments
of the general public. UCLP's facilities
house food services, meeting rooms, the bookstore,
post office, theater, recreation floor, phone
company, computer lab, an academic department

Page 7
(Journalism), disability services, and correspondence
studies. Relevant to our mission is the provision
of space to accommodate meetings and conferences.
The Leadership & Volunteerism office within the
division of student affairs recently shared their
first newsletter for students and alumni to highlight
campus and community involvement in their
initiatives as they continue to grow. Interest in
leadership among WKU students appears to be at
an all-time high. Through campus and community
partnerships, students are being given more opportunities
to engage in meaningful and purposeful
leadership and service opportunities.
The 2008-2009 school year represents a banner
year in their program. Record numbers of students
participated in the four phases of the Dynamic
Leadership Institute (DLI). Through partnerships
with the Gatton Academy, Housing and Residence
Life, Honors College, Glasgow and Owensboro
campuses, and the Greek system, over 1,100 students
examined leadership issues including style,
personality, diversity, and conflict resolution and
over 570 workshops were presented with an estimated
attendance of 10,710 people.
Through volunteer efforts, students engaged in a
variety of service leadership initiatives. The Relay
for Life and Up „Til Dawn efforts continued to
grow through outstanding student leadership
boards. Other opportunities included monthly
drives that collected needed goods such as food,
coats, books and school supplies. The WKU philanthropic
spirit prevailed throughout the year.
The growth among our initiatives created a need
for additional resources. Thanks to campus and
community volunteers, we were able to provide
the coordinators and facilitators necessary to deliver
our programs. Through collaborative efforts
with other WKU departments and the generosity
of alumni and other program supporters, we acquired
the financial assistance needed to continue
our growth.
Meeting the students‟ interest and demand for
more opportunities regarding leadership development
is the challenge for 2009-10. In the 2004-05
academic year, approximately 250 students participated
in DLI. This fall semester we served
900 students in DLI! Our goal is to see over
1,500 students take advantage of the program for
the year. We are excited to see this type of student
interest in leadership, and with the assistance
of campus and community partners, will strive to
provide a quality program that enhances student
development.
The Counseling and Testing Center
Mission: The Counseling and Testing Center
(CTC) is committed to promoting the academic
mission of the university by providing a variety of
psychological services to students that will augment
recruitment, retention, and graduation by
strengthening students‟ capacity to tolerate distress,
form healthy relationships, and seek healthy
expressions of their ideals and values. The Counseling
and Testing Center also advances the university‟s
mission by providing educational programming,
training, and consultation to the students,
faculty, staff, and constituents of WKU.
2008-2009 Annual Goals Update:
Completed accreditation through International
Association of Counseling Services.
Increased clinical service delivery by 27%
(beyond goal of 10%).
Changed training coordinator title to assistant
training director, developing proposal for an APA
pre-doctoral program.
2008-2009 Activities/Achievements
Direct clinical service: We served 550 individual
students (up from 434 last year) for a total of
2065 (1760) hours of direct counseling services.
This represents about 3% of the student body.
The CTC provided over 247 (182 in 2007/2008)
individual outreach events to over 13,191 students
(8,800 in 2007/2008).

Page 8
Completed IACS site visit and received accreditation.
Coordinated efforts with Campus Activities,
Women‟s Studies, Residential Life and the Psychology
Department to bring Jean Kilbourne to
campus to speak on the role of women and advertising
tobacco and alcohol products. Over 300 in
attendance.
Implemented new clinical software system called
Titanium. This software will increase tracking
data, streamline clinical note taking and allow a
smoother process for students entering counseling.
This year the CTC administered academic testing
to over 4,770 (4,893 in 2007/2008) individual
tests. The CTC coordinated a Sexual Assault
Awareness month with the Health Services, WKU
Women‟s Studies, Hope Harbor and other community
partners. The CTC also participated in
“RAINN” day which distributed sexual assault
information to over 3000 students. The CTC
worked with Public Health to develop different
types of sexual assault media educational information
to be translated into five common languages.
The CTC hired a new office associate,
Julia Johnson, who has completed her training
and first year at the center. Many of the CTC collaborated
on articles for the Student Affairs
Leader (9/15/2008) “Campus Response to a Student
Death” and “Redirecting Pushy Parents:
How to Build Healthier Relationships” (7/15/09).
The CTC participated in the training of 5 graduate
-level practicum counselors, who provided us
with 22% (up from 9.5%) of our direct counseling
contact hours.
Developed slide show for the waiting room TV to
engage in passive information advertising with
students and collaborate with other departments
for events. The CTC conducted a national depression
screening on October 10, a national eating
disorder screening week beginning on February
23 and a national alcohol and drug screening on
April 1. We screened over 745 students during
these three events and referred over 100 for follow-up
care.
Outreach and Consultation Services
The CTC provides prevention programming and
consultation to the campus community.
Outreach programming continues to grow in both
numbers of students served and in variety of programs
NAPSA Community Celebration
Monday, March 8 from 7:15-
9:15 pm
This lively event is a great way
for conference attendees to be
introduced to the many ways
they can get involved in NASPA.
There will be lots of giveaways,
as well as opportunities to
speak to individual group members
and ask questions.
Look for more information
coming soon to the website
about the APIKC Happy Hour
event and Networking lunch.
In addition to the excitement
that happens at the Annual Conference,
there are a few other
things folks should know. The
KC is staying on top of the unification
discussion, and continues
to solicit concerns and questions
from the members to submit
to the NASPA Board. Additionally,
the APIKC is continuing
the conversation of how to better
include and/or represent
members of South Asian/Desi
heritage. If you would like to
share your thoughts or opinions
on either of these matters,
please feel free to contact me. I
welcome your input.
Well, that about covers our updates.
I would like to encourage
folks to check out the APIKC
website at http://
www.naspa.org/kc/api/
default.cfm. The website gives
you access to things like current
and past editions of the APIKC
newsletter, information on how
to join the APIKC listserv, research
resources, as well as a
full roster of the KC’s Leadership.
Since I mentioned the
newsletter, I’d like to highlight
the fact that we have two requests
for research participants
(there are two studies highlighted
that are looking for participants
who are multiracial/
multi-ethnic Student Affairs professionals,
or Korean-American
Adoptees) in the Winter 2009
newsletter, which can be
downloaded off the APIKC's
website.
Being in Region III can be challenging
for API’s and I am looking
for ways to work with others
to build up our representation
and to better serve, support,
and assist the membership
in Region III. If you have ideas
for our KC, particularly for the
region, or would like to get
more involved, please email me
at y.giovanis@tcu.edu. I would
also like to encourage anyone

and “tell them about NASPA.”
In previous years, this was the “Ask Me
About NASPA” campaign where seasoned
student affairs professionals would wear
ribbons encouraging those new to the profession
or conference to ask about NASPA.
The Seattle conference committee
switched it to “Tell Me…” because it was
felt that it would be easier to task the seasoned
professionals to approach participants
and tell them about the association.
We also feel it would be easier for you to
tell them about the association if you knew
some key facts about the association. So
we’ve pulled together a list of 30 things
that every NASPA member should know.
Hopefully you will discover some things
you didn’t know and will be prepared to
engage in conversation those newest to
the profession or conference.
