AUSTRIA’S
WINE REGIONS
Austria is a comprehensive wine country. Vine cultivation is concentrated in the federal
states of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), Burgenland, Steiermark (Styria) and the capital,
Vienna. Within these are 16 official wine areas.
The 48.600 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by 32.000 wine-makers; 6.000 are producing
bottled wines and the rest deliver their grapes to co-operatives or large cellars.
A total of 30.000 hectares are devoted to the grape in Niederösterreich and include the
wine areas Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal, Weinviertel, Traisental, Donauland, Carnuntum
and Thermenregion.
In Burgenland, approximately 14.600 hectares are planted in the areas Neusiedlersee,
Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, Mittelburgenland, and Südburgenland.
The Steiermark’s vines are planted on nearly 3.300 hectares of the Südsteiermark,
Südoststeiermark and Weststeiermark areas.
Vienna has its own wine region status and with its various districts encompasses nearly
700 planted hectares.
Grüner Veltliner
Hundschupfen 1999
Weinviertel
Wine Description: tender yellow-green, expressive aroma, typical peppery note in the
nose, fruity, peppery taste, powerful and harmonious
Estate description: The well-known wine village of Mailberg has first been documented
in the year 1055. In 1140, the young Order of Johanniter received properties in
Mailberg. Therefore, Mailberg represents the oldest land holdings of the Order of
Johanniter and the subsequently established Sovereign Malteser Order of Knighthood.
Professor Lenz Moser III., in 1969 established the foundations of the present winery by
leasing the vineyards of the Malteser. After totally replanting, the vineyard holdings were
expanded to 48 hectares. Beginning in the eighties, the vineyards of the Mailberg estate
were organically cultivated. The varieties of Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt were supplemented
with French varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot,
Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Especially the balanced and elegant Cabernet and
Merlot red wines have received several awards. For some years, a barrel aged blend of
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with the name „Kommende Mailberg“ has been marketed
as premium wine
Grüner Veltliner
Weissenkirchner Achleiten, Smaragd 2000
Wachau
Wine description: dry, elegant and complex nose, mineraly terroir notes with fruittightness,
on the palate nice and fruity, very elegant and complex wine
Estate description: The foundation of the winegrowers co-operative Wachau was set
with the purchase of the vineyards of Ernst Rüdiger Fürst von Starhemberg in 1938 by
the vineyard lessee of the estates of Dürnstein and Thal Wachau. The co-operative
always felt obligated in spirit and action to produce wines from grapes of members only.
To dissociate itself from those co-operatives, which did not adhere to the same principles,
a renaming to „Freie Weingärtner Wachau“ (free wine-gardeners/growers of
Wachau) took place in 1990.
Through its members, the co-operative has access to the best terrace vineyards of
Wachau. Similar to individual harvests in singular wineries, the immediate attention to
the harvested crop is ensured by the co-operative through three press stations spread over
the Wachau. The Freie Weingärtner also introduced a streamlining of varieties and strict
quality oriented harvest dates for further increments of quality standards.
Riesling
Kremser Kögl Reserve 1999
Kremstal
Wine description: golden with light green touch, intensive peach, honey and melon type
flavor, intensive Riesling taste with influence of the primery rock solide
Estate description: The Undhof, located in the town section of Und, between Krems
and Stein, is family owned by the Salomons already in its seventh generation. During the
thirties, Fritz Salomon, the father of the present owner, was one of the first, who bottled
his wines and he was considered a pioneer for his viticultural practices.
Some sites of the approximately 20 ha vineyards under cultivation, such as the
Pfaffenberg of the foundation of Heiligengeist, have been added through long term leases.
Stable manure is utilised for vineyard fertilisation, the lines between the vines are
covered with mulch to protect the soil. In conjunction with other winegrowers, an irrigation
plant was installed due to dry summers. Fermentation and ageing takes place in
steel tanks; chaptalization and deacidification are categorically avoided. On hand of a
rather substantial vinotheque, Salomon can prove the longevity of his wines from Krems.
Gewürztraminer 1998
Neusiedlersee - Hügelland
Wine description: deep gold-yellow, typical spice aroma, opulent and long lasting on
the palate, long finish with unmistakable character
Estate description: In the Burgenland wine scene, Jost Höpler, who performs a similar
role as a Negociant Eleveur and who also owns considerable vineyards himself, has
managed to obtain an excellent reputation for his products and a broad distribution basis
in the gastronomy trade and export markets within a short period of time. In the future
he plans to increase his competitiveness by investment in replanting, in more refrigeration
capacity, better destemmer and more red wine fermenters.
In the vineyards, which are in best locations and on different soil, Jost Höpler prefers the
natural way; they have a green cover all year round; and have not been fertilised with
minerals for six years.
Zweigelt
Andau 1999
Neusiedlersee
Wine description: dark red with violette glimmer, intensive cherry aroma, soft tannins,
velvety, harmonious taste, long finish
Estate description: The Lenz Moser winery, since 1986 connected with the
Getränkehandelshaus Ges.m.b.H. (beverage distributor) of Linz, which is partially
owned by the French conglomerate Remy Martin, was managed by Lenz Moser V till
December 1997. Under his reign, since 1986 large investments have been undertaken in
new plantings of vineyards, in new presses, storage areas and modern bottling facilities.
The legendary Lenz Moser III established the great reputation of the winery in the twenties,
with experiments of the trellis training system, whose high training system has been
adopted in almost 90% of Austrian vineyards today. Lenz Moser’s father, Laurenz Moser
built on this reputation, as one of the first to propagate integrated viticulture and barrel
ageing on a large scale.
Chorus Domäne 1998
Thermenregion
Wine description: intense deep red colour, roasted aroma, vanilla and berries, fruity,
full-bodied wine, well balanced with little tannins
Estate description: Whith over 100 ha, the Stift Klosterneuburg is one of the largest
wine producers in Austria. Because of its managment of four estates in Klosterneuburg,
Kahlenbergdorf, Tattendorf, and Gumpoldskirchen, the abbey estate contains diverse
varieties and wine types. In order to restructure the previously over extensive offering,
an „Estate“ and a „Domäne“ label were introduced.
The estate label stands for fruity, fresh wines for young consumption and purposely does
not mention single vineyards, although its wines contain them. Through changes in the
winery, among them the purchase of modern fermentation tanks, the estate now does
justice to them by offering very spicy, young wines indeed.
Arachon Evolution 1997
Mittelburgenland
Wine description: concentrated dark red, fine darkberry nose with soft blackberry and
cassis, massive fruit, intensive tannin, nice fruity sweetness, elegant on the palate, very
Estate description: T.FX.T – behind the name, there are three top wine growers from
Austria: Tibor Szemes, Franz Xaver Pichler and Manfred Tement. Arachon is produced
in the wine growing region of Mittelburgenland.
Whenever three known wine growers tackle something, you (almost) can be sure, that
nothing will go wrong. As well in the case of Timbor Szemes, Franz Xaver Pichler and
Manfred Tement nothing went wrong. The project „Arachon” under the direction of
those three experienced directors from different wine-growing regions (Lower Austria,
Burgenland and Styria) to make many wine growers of one region cultivate one wine has
succeeded. Meanwhile there are 37 wine growers in and around Horitschon under contract
and participate in the production of the Arachon. The cultivated area amounts to
approximately 21 hectares.
