Several previously unpublished chapters are also included, five<strong>of</strong> which benefitted from<br />

the review process <strong>of</strong> the IEEE Annals although the papers were eventually withdrawn<br />

from consider<strong>at</strong>ion for public<strong>at</strong>ion in the Annals because <strong>of</strong> space limit<strong>at</strong>ions in the<br />

two <strong>BBN</strong> special issues.<br />

Karl Berry <strong>and</strong> Steve Peterprovided guidance for the use <strong>of</strong> LATE Xfor typesetting this<br />

book, <strong>and</strong> Steve Peter provided font advice for the cover art <strong>and</strong> for denoting sidebars.<br />

Boris Veytsman helped with a key typesetting issue. Ulrike Fischer providing a helpful<br />

answer to a question posted to the comp.text.tex discussion group. Other members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the TEX community provided other answers. JayHowl<strong>and</strong> provided editorial help<br />

to Dave Walden on chapters for which he was involved in the writing or compil<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

All our authors reviewed the pro<strong>of</strong> copies <strong>of</strong> their own chapters, while Alex McKenzie<br />

spotted errors in the pro<strong>of</strong> copies <strong>of</strong> his chapter <strong>and</strong> all <strong>of</strong> the other chapters.<br />

Our spouses have ourgre<strong>at</strong> appreci<strong>at</strong>ion for putting up with, as they have doneso<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten in the past, the long hours we have spent <strong>at</strong> the keyboard writing <strong>and</strong> editing.<br />
