tHE gift of conStRuction
the Parkview Huntington family Ymca capital campaign was awarded $150,000 in July
2007 by the Huntington county community foundation to aide in the construction of the
new 57,000 square-foot facility which was being built in front of the Parkview
Huntington Hospital.
the grant award pushed the total
raised for the capital campaign to
over $7.3 million. this grant was a
part of the community foundation’s
unrestricted fund, which addresses
ever-changing charitable needs in
Huntington county. it allows for the
foundation to make grants that will
benefit wherever they determine the
community’s needs are the greatest.
the money that the Ymca received
will be applied directly toward all of
the locker room areas in the new
building. four family locker rooms,
a new addition to this building, will
allow families with young children
to get changed without making
other Ymca members uncomfortable.
the community foundation had previously given grants to the Ymca in 2004. an indoor
slide and 50 percent of the cost of youth equipment was covered with these grants.
the new facility opened on november 10, 2008. the number of total memberships increased
from 2,200 in the old building, to 5,100 in the new building.
Thank You
where we live and work. for ten years the community foundation has played a vital role in
connecting charitable giving with those who need it most. their grateful faces remind us of
the impact that your generosity has had. these charitable acts would not have taken place
without the vision of both our donors and the nonprofits that act on the behalf of
our community.
opportunities available, operations transparent, and act within the scope of our mission.
08
John decker is a well-known name throughout Huntington
county and beyond. He was a renowned leader, role model,
visionary, activist, and a loving husband and father. He
performed each role with diligence and devotion. John is
still held in high regard within our organization as well. He
was a member of the grass roots committee formed in 1989
to establish what would become the Huntington county
community foundation. the community foundation was
officially established in 1990. John was a founding member
of the foundation’s board of directors, serving for ten years,
including terms as vice president and president.
Born in decatur, iL, John graduated from Butler university
in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. as a
pharmacist, he was a co-owner of the former South Side drugs
for eight years and went on to other pharmacist positions throughout Huntington. He and
his wife, midge, were married in 1967 and made Huntington their home, where they raised
their sons J. R. decker and Bradley decker.
John contributed his time and efforts to too many organizations and causes to count.
in addition to his commitment to the foundation, he was known for his devotion to the
Optimist Club, Pathfinder Services and the Boy Scouts. He served tirelessly as a Huntington
county commissioner for eight years, Republican precinct committeeman and he also
guided campaigns of several state and local candidates.
John, along with his wife midge, were co-winners of the Herald-Press county citizen of the
Year award as well as co-winners of the Pathfinder Services LaMont Award. In 2000, John
was named the 33rd chief of the flint Springs tribe.
He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife midge and clowning with the Joy Pleasers
clown ministry, where he served as president and was known as SquiBit the clown.
in 2001, John’s mother-in-law, marian dadd established the dadd fund with Huntington
County Community Foundation to support the Pathfinder Client Services Fund. As a way of
including her daughter midge, the name was changed to the dadd-decker fund in 2006.
John died on September 24, 2007. He was 63 years old. Huntington county lost a person
who epitomized the definition of a servant, but gained a greater understanding of why we
are on this earth. thank you, John. Let us follow your example of “doing good works” here
in Huntington county. in keeping with his devotion to the community foundation, John
left a bequest to the foundation’s unrestricted fund which supports “make a difference”
grants for charitable purposes in Huntington county.
